Mabel's is definitely not for the gourmet. The atmosphere is very much like that of a Coney Island, that is to say that it is comfortable with ample booths and adequate lighting. The food is mediocre. We went for a late dinner and ordered soup and a salad. The soup was cream of asparagus and very, very thick. I ordered the demi-loaf and it was already a bit stale. The chicken salad included delectable dried cherries (which Traverse City is well-known for) but the chicken itself was very processed and rubbery.

I would not recommend Mabel's for dinner.

Great family restaurant that is always busy with hardly a wait. Food is great and service is good. Can accommodate a fairly large crowd. I just love their Michigan salad.

This restaurant is one of the favorites in our area, especially for those with families. Their staff is always TOP NOTCH (be sure to ask for Dorothy, if she's working) There food is wonderful (be sure to grab some baked goods from their bakery...the cinnamon rolls are to die for). They have a broad menu and it's available all day--so if you want breakfast for dinner, you can have it. It's easy to find and centrally located too.

PROS: Fabulous homemade baked goods, ample parking, easy to get to
CONS:

There's a reason Mabel's keeps getting voted the best family restraunt in the area - they are. They have wonderful homemade breads and soups, great breakfasts and very reasonable prices.
