I have always considered Dunham's to be an excellent option in purchasing high quality athletic equipment......that is until I recently purchased a basketball system from our local store. When I opened the box, I immediately discovered that the backboard was covered with deep scratches and scuff marks. Since this basketball system was not cheap, and I am not one to settle for expensive junk, I decided to simply exchange this item for one that did not look like the twenty-year-old backboard I was trying to replace. However, as I attempted to return this damaged basketball system, my father, mother, and I encountered a manager that apparently was having a bad day:(

This particular manager insisted that the scratches would "wipe off." "Everyone knows that," the manager confidently insisted, informing us that he/she had sold over 10,000 of these particular basketball systems. Do we even have 10,000 outdoor basketball systems in our city? Maybe consumers from all over the world purchase basketball systems from this particular store. Anyway.....just a humorous sales pitch, back to my experience with Dunham's.

Following several failed attempts by an employee to magically wipe the scratches off the damaged backboard, this manager then attempted to convince me that all the backboards come with scratches.........naturally this came as a shock to me and my family. After nearly an hour of this nonsense and a plethera of disrespectful remarks from management (at one point, this individual even snapped at my father who was simply observing the incident), we were finally given a replacement backboard and notified that we should not take the backboard if we were just going to return it again. At this point, I should have asked for a refund immediately. However, since my step son's birthday was a day away, I took the new backboard home with the hopes and dreams that this could be the one not covered with scratches and scuff marks. The new backboard did have several minor scratches and scuff marks (definitely not my definition of the word "new"), but I decided I could live with it.

I am writing this review to voice how disappointed I am in Dunham's and how management exemplified their lack of committment to customer satisfaction. When an individual spends several hundred dollars only to discover their purchase is damaged, management should happily replace the item without a dispute. I realize that management had nothing to do with the damaged backboard they sold me (probably a packaging/shipping issue). However, I also realize that management should have been cooperative in finding me a replacement.......without making a scene in front of employees and other customers (two of which set down their merchandise and exited thes store during the incident.....YES). I can honestly say that I will NEVER shop at Dunham's again ......nor will any of the baseball/basketball teams that I am currently associated with. It is a shame that this incident will cost Dunham's plenty of business in the future. I sure hope management can learn to take pride in their merchandise and make customer satisfaction a priority. I would like to add that the regular employees at Dunham's were very helpful and cooperaive in trying to resolve this issue, which had to be embarrassing and uncomfortable for them as well.
