I moved to Oakland County recently and as I have volunteered with a top-notch shelter in my hometown in WI, I wanted to do the same here. The HSoM facility is closest to my new home, so I stopped by to get the ball rolling. What a mistake.
Don't be fooled by the cutesy mini-farmyard exterior (those horses and ducks shouldn't be there either) - the moment you step inside, you smell dirty cages and hear the cries of distressed pets.
The staff brings to mind one word: weasely. They smile so fake it makes a sneer seem preferable, they act like they hate life and they are seemingly resentful about answering the simplest questions. I had checked them out on line, but their website is very plain, unhelpful and almost non-interactive, plus they don't have a Facebook page. Odd. Most shelters and rescues have photos and info on every available animal, usually on a well-designed website AND a FB page. Why not this one? When I asked, I got a mumbled runaround. OK. I then asked what volunteering entailed, and they ran down the usual list of duties, including walking, playing with and grooming the dogs, adding, 'But not the cats. They don't matter.' Are you kidding me? EVERY reputable animal shelter has play time and grooming for both dogs AND cats. Doing my best to mask my shock, I took a look at the dogs. My heart sank. The dogs are stacked on top of each other in metal cages that are often way too small, some dogs laying absolutely still with despair or terror or confusion in their eyes - I dare say they instinctively know this heartless dump is their last stop. Worse, I saw two teenage girls, VOLUNTEERS, teasing and laughing at a large agitated dog that was barking itself hoarse and struggling inside its tiny cell. Frankly, after hearing that dismissive remark about the cats well-being, I couldn't bear to look at the poor things. I left, disgusted.
Overall, this place struck me as either the kind of "shelter" that 1) just pockets donations and invests none of it into bettering the facility, or 2) that it sells many of these helpless animals to research labs, where they will meet an agonized and horrific end, or 3) that it has a high kill/low adoption rate directly related to the sheer laziness, apathy and ineptitude of the "staff." Maybe all three. I think it should be closed immediately and all of the animals transferred to other shelters.
If they let you, try to adopt one of those poor babies out of there. Do it today! But, for the love of God, do not leave ANY animal with these horrible people. I doubt even the sweetest-natured and most adoptable cat or dog would make it out alive.
ZERO stars.

THIS IS THE WORST PLACE TO TAKE YOUR ANIMAL TO! I worked here years ago and I seen such cruel behavior it made me sick. I seen them lie to people who surrendered their animals, they would tell them they would not be put to sleep yet that is exactly what they would do and they would tell them when they called to check up on their animal that it was placed in a great home. I seen them refuse to adopt a dog to a lady in a wheel chair because she couldn't walk the dog. heck it was a yorkie and would love to be just a lap dog. but when the lady became upset and questioned them on why she didn't qualify to adopt, they told me to take the dog in back and they put it down. a perfectly healthy adoptable dog. They had school kids come in for a visit and showed them new born kittens and tokd the kids how they helped them be born and how they will find homes as soon as they were old enough.. then no more did the kittens get back to their mom they put the entire litter and mom to sleep. It is very hard to adopt from them and they lie about the animals you serrender. PLEASE if you love your pet and just come up on hard times do not take them there it is a death sentence to your dog.. they stack the dead dogs up in the back room in a heap then when it gets to many on the floor they just throw them in the burners...."SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN!!!!!! I can;t believe they are allowed to keep their doors open they need to be investigated!

DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMAL HERE TO FIND A NEW HOME...GO TO A RESCUE GROUP. We took our dog here because he needed a new home. They assured me they NEVER euthanize unless an animal become aggressive and becomes unadoptable or is severely ill.

So we took the dog in and they seemed to care less about any of his papers or history. They asked a few general questions. Before my kids could say good bye they had him in a new leash device and where taking him away. I was asked to fill out a form signing the dog away. Now if they looked at his papers they would have realized I did not own the dog. My BF does. He was not with me when I went. I thought he was okay with me taking the dog in. Anyway she made sure I put the phone number on the form so they could call if he became aggressive. I asked if I would have to take him back in that case and she said you just signed away ownership. She told me they would not put him up for adoption for 3 days to give him time to adjust (this was Saturday) They said I could call in a few days and see if he was still there.

So they kids wanted to see the animals. They let us go look but asked us to stay away from our dog to avoid confusing him. When I went back I noticed they had all the same dogs they had last year when we went. One of them we tried to adopt but were told no because he wasn't ready for adoption. The other was because we have kids. I thought well at least they don't put them down. I should have realized it's probably because they make it so hard to adopt!!!

Anyways; on Thursday my boyfriend went up there to check on his dog and bring him home if he wasn't adopted (ok he told me over the phone to just get rid of him then....he didn't mean it but I thought he did oops) He didn't tell them why he was there. He went back to look for him but he wasn't there. So my bf asked the staff about the dog. They told him that the dog became overly aggressive and was in the back sedated waiting to be put down. She said they had been calling my house to let me know but I NEVER got a call or I would have gone and picked him up myself. Our dog is NOT a bad dog. Not aggressive at all. He is playful and loving. I mean in what world is a healthy 3 year old German Shepard who is up to date on shots and already neutured unadoptable???? Not to mention the dog reaked from laying in it's own urine.

I also know they are full of it because since then have kenneled him and he had zero problems. No aggression issues what so ever. I also talked to another woman who had the same thing happen with her dog...took it in and 3 days later it was in the back lying in filth getting ready to be put down.

I was extremely satisfied with the care my cat received at the Humane Society of Macomb. She was treated quickly, and there were no hidden costs. Before a test was run, the rationale and cost were explained in detail. Within an hour, my cat was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. I was immediately educated on how to care for a cat with this condition and shown how to administer insulin injections. I was pleasantly surprised when I received a call from the doctor the next day to check on the status of my cat.

I've taken my animals to other veterinarians in the past and must say I received better quality care at the Humane Society of Macomb. I won't hesitate to return in the future.

Awful. Not sure how a place like this exists and it should be shut down. Went to adopt a cat, at least 15 there at the time. Was unable to even visit with the cat. Gave me a run around about age of my children and vet care for other animals. Let me just say I have adopted 3 children and these people would not consider adopting a pet to me that they will put to death. Please NEVER consider bringing an animal here - there are so many other options.

This is NOT the state run Michigan Humane Society. This is a PRIVATELY owned company incorporated in Michigan. (They can do whatever THEY WANT with the animals including selling them for research if they wanted to). Adoption is not promoted and they will not work with local rescue groups. Also, people who call and tell them that they've found an animal are bullied into bringing them in because you have to pay to leave an animal. EUTHANASIA rate here is also very HIGH.
If you need to turn in an animal for whatever reason your pet would be MUCH BETTER off if you contact a local RESCUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO STARS

Hi, My husband and I adopted a cat there several years ago. While our little baby was flea ridden and did develop a respiratory infection after we brought him home, he has turned into a wonderful loving cat. I can't say if he would have been euthanized, but I know that we were welcomed warmly and allowed to adopt a great guy!

To the person asking about prices, I went there a few months ago and I think it was $100 for a dog.

I am a young adult (under 21) who wanted to adopt a dog. When I went there, no one was helpful when I wanted info about different dogs and I had to fill out pre-adoption paperwork before I could even see a dog. Then, after waiting a minimum of 30 minutes to have my paperwork verified, they told me I had to have a parent come back with me since I am under 21, and I was not even able to see the dog outside it's cage.

It was a major waste of time, and half the people who work there just ignore you when you try to ask a question. I suggest Macomb County Animal Shelter on Dunham Road, the people are much more friendly and prices are cheaper. I got a beautiful 10 month pup there.

Just wondering how much it is to adopt a dog/puppy from there? I know my mom got a German Shepherd from there a long time ago. he was a great dog but sadly he passed away :(Just wondering if the adoption fees changed or anything. Someone let me know please, I'm going to be adopting a dog/puppy there soon :)

This place has an adoption rate of less than 10% and yet has thousands and thousand of dollars in the bank (check it out, they are a non profit and must report it).
These people are in it for the money or they are in it for some other reason, but it isn't for saving animals from their statistics. They do not work with rescues or do anything humane as far as I can tell.

All of the bad reviews on this page are true, almost all of the animals are put to sleep. Even though alot of people come into adopt everyday they are turned down for one reason or another. The select few employees who do adoptions are very rude to most people that come in. They only have kennel assistants during the day. So that means after they close to the public the animals sit in their own waste until they return the next day. They also do kill the mothers and their babies, saying they don't have the room to keep them. Most dogs are euthanized because of kennel cough, which is curable. They say they don't have the room to keep them and treat them. The same goes for the cats, once they get sick they get put down. The rate at which these animals are euthanized at this " Humane" shelter is truly alarming. I encourage anyone considering bringing your animal to this place to avoid it at all costs. Unless you want your animal to suffer before it dies!!!!

It's true what he said about the euthanasia. I saw it with my own eyes. The cat story is especially true as well, if the cat is pregnant and has her kittens both are euthanized before they ever get to know one another. The same is true about pregnant dogs, they let the mother have her pups then euthanize her and the pups a week later. It's very disheartening.
As for dogs/cats, the person at the front desk can usually tell (when you are surrendering a dog/cat) weather it has a good chance of being euthanized or not. But I'm sure they wont tell you that. They will smile and say yes, so you will leave.
The horses, sheep, goats, chicken, ducks, and birds shouldn't be there at all. This place is ill equipped to take care of them in the proper manner needed for their survival.
Please think twice when you take the pet you love and admire most in the world there to be put to sleep or surrendered. This place is a black hole of death and mass euthanasia is involved. Take them somewhere respectable... a rescue group to be surrendered or the vet to be put to sleep. You will fell better about it in the long run.

Don't go there! I worked there 5 months and came home crying most days. And as a guy, that says kind of a lot. They are arseholes. The animals are not given a chance or vaccinated. Honestly if they see a cat sneeze or hear a dog cough, they put them down. Almost ALL pitbulls are put down, and kittens who's moms are 'sick' or not with them aren't given a chance either. hey do mass euthanasias and pile up all the poor animals in back. Then after the pile gets big, they just carelessly throw them in the incinerator. SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN.

I have been determined to adopt a pet from a high kill shelter since I read about the terrible ways in which these precious animals were "disposed of." I was also very disheartened when I read that there is only an 8.9% adoption rate for these poor creatures. I am glad that so many people have had positive experiences, but please be aware that so many pets have not.

Found a Siamese cat. Took it to the Humane Society and was treated very rude. They took the cat, then wanted me to adopted it back after 4 business days. Gave me the run around for 12 days. Told me cat was fine on Monday, got sick on Tuesday and euthanized on Wednesday. I am very upset and someone lied. Will never deal with them again!!!

I have taken my pets to them for over 10 years. I never had a problem with them! I have put a dog and a cat down with them and they were wonderful! I have another dog that I currently take to them and they get her in fast and treat us very nicely! Prices are very reasonable. I think you can't go wrong with this place.

They can get behind schedule here at this humane society, but other than that this is a good reasonably priced place to take your pet. I took my dog here, and adopted a cat from here. They also have parties at Christmas time where you can bring your pets, and buy goods at discounted prices to benefit the humane society. ALso have animals for kids to look at...

I understand that it is probably a hard job, but the staff is very standoffish and they have a lot of rules before you can actually adopt a pet. My thought is that I am saving an animals life, they should be more than willing to help me!

I use the Humane Society for my 2 dogs. I like their prices and their staff is usually helpful but the wait time is always long. Sometimes I wait for and hour, sometimes 30 minutes, and with two big dogs any amount of time seems doubled.
