I went in the store (Toledo-but they don't have a page here) which is sad and depressing. Puppies in aquarium like cages sitting in the corner with nothing but shredded paper. I asked about the breeder of a dog that I was interested in. When the employee told me is wasn't a puppy mill, I asked her how she knew. She said because the manager told her so. DUH! When I asked too many questions (I guess), I was asked to leave. Employee said I shouldn't waste her time if I wasn't going to buy a puppy. OK. When I left the mall, I saw some people with signs and decided to stop and talk to them. They were very polite and had more information about the breeders than the store did. They showed me photos all labeled as to where they were from, who took them, etc. They had USDA inspection reports and shipping records. I know you could say maybe they made it all up. But why would they? They are not trying to make any money like the store is. These were very nice people and I believed them. I asked a TON of questions and they had all the answers. When I got home, I looked up the name of the breeder I had been told in the store and guess what? Yep, a puppy mill with USDA violations. Had to find out for myself. Glad I did. Do your research and don't even consider buying a puppy here!

I bought a maltese/poodle from the Family Puppy about four months ago and it has been nothing but a nightmare. She came to me sick, and very small. The vet saw her within the one week period, she has kidney stones, I take her to the vet weekly, she is on three medications and has no control of urination. She wears a diaper all day. She is only about five pounds and still doesn't have all of her teeth. I cant get the Vet to answer if this is something that can be fixed. Very unhappy and wouldn't tell anyone to get a puppy there.

I don't understand why people don't think they release information on their breeders. They not only have a list on the website, but each dog they sell have PAPERS that show the breeder, parents, vet care, etc. We haven't had any problems with the puppy we purchased, who we had visited before purchasing. They answered all the questions we had. These bad reviews are from people who either never bought a puppy and listen to hearsay, or never looked into the breeder before purchasing the dog.
To say they sell to complete strangers is a complete lie. They made sure they had all our information, all the family members in the household were present to make sure they all got along with the dog.
They also warned us about a certain dog that was cute but had some food aggression. They said they did not want to sell that one to us because we had a child and it was dangerous. Obviously they care. If they were just in it for the money they would have sold us that one.
If you get a sick dog, blame the breeder, not the store.

My husband and I purchased our Miniature Schnauzer from Family Puppy 3 1/2 years ago. I don't want anyone to go through what we did - please either adopt a dog from a shelter or a reputable breeder (who you go to and see the litter/Mom/Dad).

At six months old we took our dog in to be neutered and they ran the normal blood tests. His liver enzymes came back off the charts. That led us to Michigan State Veterinarian Hospital to run thousands of dollars worth of tests - only to be inconclusive. During this process we were continually checking with Family Puppy for a family medical history of our dog to help determine what was wrong. We were denied information every time. I was told they would only produce family history if I provide documentation stating the medical condition is indisputably hereditary. But we couldn't figure out what it was, so I couldn't produce documentation. We had hoped a family history would help us determine a diagnosis. In the end, he seemed healthy enough and we went on with our daily lives.

At about two years old our dog developed seizures and was diagnosed with epilepsy. Our vet confirmed this is common in the breed, and probably what caused our liver enzymes to be off at six months, but is also, almost always a hereditary condition! Our dog is happy and healthy with a daily dose of meds and extensive blood work 2x a year. However, the worry, medical bills and anxiety we suffered could have been prevented with a family medical history. I didn't think that was asking much. I didn't want to sue, I just wanted to know what was wrong with my dog and how I could help him get better.

Now my experience with reputable breeders: they not only provide you with a family medical history, but they keep records of all of their sold puppies. And, as this has happened to me before, if the mother or father develops a medical condition later in life, than the breeder calls you directly to notify you of the condition. So then you can have your vet keep an eye out and be preventative.

Do not trust Family Puppy, they are not reputable, after you purchased a pup, they are not friendly nor helpful. If you want to go back to them with complaints after purchasing a pup, you'll need to hire a lawyer, or you won't be able to get anywhere. Those of you who posted after you recently purchased a pup, I've been where you are. We were happy with Family Puppy, our dog was healthy and happy. Now, thousands of dollars later, all of our money and time could have been prevented if they could supply a family medical history. It's not worth it. If you're going to spend that kind of money on a dog - go to a breeder. Breeders are less expensive and they'll provide you with a full medical history and not make you prove your dog's condition is hereditary in order to obtain it.

In conclusion, we LOVE our dog. But we wish we hadn't had to go through what we did. We will never, NEVER again buy from a pet store.

As a patron of the store, most of these reviews are incorrect. They do NOT use puppy mills and if those people would have done their research they would know that. They also pay for your first vet visit so you can see that the puppy is healthy, if its not dont buy it. And they have the paper work for all their dogs, especially yorkies, and by the way to make a puppy it takes two dogs so duh theres to sets of paper work moron.

Had a birthday party last week. Went-out fantastic. Very courteous people. Kids loved the playtime with puppies. Loved the stuffed puppies as goody-bag. The party room is huge, which allows the kids to run and parents to entertain themselves. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Will do it again.

To the people that think that the negative comments are from protesters are nuts...

It's from people who have either experienced sick puppies that have been boughten from there or people who know what they are talking about.

The Family Puppy says they don't get their dogs from puppy mills so why don't they just prove it and let people know who they get them from? Well the answer to that is easy.. THEY ARE LYING.

All you people looking for a puppy... they aren't hard to find and you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on them. Check Craigslist, the Humane Society, Animal Control, Petfinder.com... check with your local rescues...

I am begging people not to buy from there because they do get their puppies from puppy mills and if you buy from them you are supporting the cruelty that the parents are going through.

If you have no heart and don't love animals then go ahead and buy a puppy from there. But I hope that you can live with yourself knowing that millions of dogs are suffering because you were selfish and wanted that puppy in the window.

John S. Don't worry about the negative stuff. They are all protestors lying about Family Puppy. This is the kind of stuff they resort to! They will stoop to very low levels including lie and act as if they purchased puppies from your store.

The fact that I love my dog dearly is the only reason for the one star here. We brought home what we thought was a happy healthy puppy. Within 24 hours he had a terrible cough and a very runny nose. He had a bad case of kennel cough. This of course got our other dog sick and caused us to be running back and forth from the vet for two weeks. Once healthy the vet found that our pup was not microchipped as promised and payed for. I am now debating if it is worth going back to the store to rectify this as I don't want to make my pup sick again. Why are the puppied there sick - that was my question too. I did my research and found that they are indeed puppy mill puppies. I specifically asked if these puppies were from puppy mills and was told that they were from local breeders - not puppy mills. Don't fall for it like I did. Although I love my pup to death, I feel guilty that I have supported a puppy mill operation. Please don't make the same mistake. Visit your local animal rescue. There are so many dogs that need a good home.

THEY ROCK!!!!! I hate to say "purchase" or "bought" because she is a living animal and part of our family, but we didpurchase our Maltese-Yorkie mix here (too some a Mutt, but most AKC dogs started out the same way). She is terrific, lovable, friendly, which she learned from the store. The way they treat their dogs and play with them, train them, and love them is like purchasing from a breeder. I did research on the breeder they received my Morkie from and he is top notch and holds leadership positions in breeder clubs and presents dogs at shows. Anyone in the are looking for a dog should go here!

I bought a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from this store. I was very unhappy with the health of the dog afterward.
The dog had the following issues:Hernia repair; Grade II Luxating Patella; Treated for kennel cough at store; ear infection; anal impact from pet store. Not the "healthy" dog I was supposed to get.
I looked up the breeder and it is Happy Tails Kennel, a well known puppy mill. If I had known that, I would've never gone there for my pet.
Their warranty claims to cover genetic defects and I could bring my pet back and get 50% toward another dog. No thanks, I don't want to deal with them ever again. One bad experience is enough.

Sure the storefront is pretty BUT they get their dogs from puppy mills. Reputable breeders would NOT sell to a pet store. Their so called "warranty" isn't worth the paper for your bird cage.

This place is a complete ripoff! I bought Yorkie there in May. I thought I was getting a purebred, but I am not so sure now. I am not even sure who the breeder is!! My paperwork shows two families - Steven & Wander Miller and Jason Miller, as well as David Miller. I did a little research and David Miller. He is licensed, but Steve Miller was not. So where did my pup really come from? I fear a puppy mill. My biggest concern is my poor pup. We had to repair the hernia and are still treating the kennel cough. I hope it doesn??t develop into pneumonia.

I am not sure the store can be trusted. I checked the inspection reports for the breeder. Guess what? Dirty. ??The food receptacles for the dogs were dirty and the tray under the enclosures had a build up of grime. Dirty surfaces can attract pests which can cause disease in the dogs. The surfaces should be cleaned at least every two weeks. The under tray should be cleaned with a cleaner that is more effective in removing the grime build-up.? And he hasn??t been inspected in 2 years! I worry about the other puppies arriving sick.

I purchased a Cavalier a month ago. Family Puppy was upfront about her patella status and the vet confirmed they FP did not withhold anything. The staff was patient and helpful. My puppy was happy at the store and remains happy. She shows no signs of having been bred at a puppy mill. They actually gave me $100 off and gave me a payment plan. I had been visiting the store for nearly two years waiting for the puppy I really wanted. They never accused me of coming in with my son just to play with the puppies. They treated me with respect each time. The negative "review" below is not a review and should be disregarded. I have recommended Family Puppy to friends and defended it against those who ignorantly accuse it of being associated with puppy mills.

Anonymous a, We do not use the Hunte Corporation. We travel to our breeders ourselves to inspect the facilities and pick up the puppies. Have you even been in our store? We have a wonderful warranty and it's on our website for all to see TheFamilyPuppy.com. I wish people would not post without even a name.

They have a wide selection of puppies and a large selection of food choices and toys. Great place to shop for your pets! The puppies seems to be in good condition though it's better to adopt or get from a reputable breeder.
