A lot of people like this store because it is local and a community store. But as a student I did not like this store. The line can be outrageous and you can find better prices elsewhere.

This is a more upclass store when it comes to the books they sell. I had to come here when I was taking my class in regards to paranormal activities. I didn't actually expect to find the book anywhere on campus but I was wrong. Apparently, they also have other books but they're mostly on the first floor. The 2nd floor contains most of the actual text books.

On the one hand, Shaman Drum is yet another predatory campus textbook seller that sells textbooks for twice as much as online sellers. To make matters worse, its cramped attic storage area for texts means long lines during the beginning of the semester. Avoid this place at all costs for textbooks; since most of the social science, history, poli sci texts are here, odds are you can find them at one of the local used places for cheap, or even at Border's where you'll pay a few dollars less and not have to wait in crazy long lines.
On the other hand, however, the main floor of Shaman Drum has one of the best selections of harder to find more specialty books in Ann Arbor. Their history, anthropology, and nature sections are particularly good. They also have the best selection of more obscure and foreign magazines in the area.

This is one book store that I dont mind shelling out money to. Even my textbooks have been great. While you likely wont find the latest Mary Higgins Clark, you will find many well-known authors that everyone is talking about. They also have ongoing author readings and books signings. If nothing else, it feels great to support the local bookseller in Borders-land.

I like Shaman Drum because it has a much more personal and interesting feel than chain booksellers like Barnes and Nobles down the street. They usual have books on more... "interesting" topics and you can find a lot of interesting reads. The staff here are very knowledgable and will point you in the direction you are looking for, or a whole new direction altogether, which is kind of fun...

I like this book store. It is little bit small, but you definetly can find some very unique book over there. They also have some special used book over there. If you use some time, you definetly can find very interesting book. The book store is a typical ann arbor style book store. You should go, if you really like ann arbor. Then you can feel thoughly about ann arbor.

When I was a student there was nothing more aggravating than when a professor would order their books from Shaman Drum and only them. I understand they wanted to support an independent book store but Shaman Drum was the most difficult place to buy text books and their prices were not any better than the other bookstores. Since text books were upstairs the line would stretch down the stairs, outside the store and down the street. The place was so small, only a handful of people could go in at a time, then you'd have to wait in another huge line to purchase the books. They did have a helpful staff when you needed help finding books. If you can avoid buying your text books here you'll save yourself lots of time and stress.

Shaman Drum is a small bookstore on campus where you can find many books that aren't the typical main stream books. Many professors on campus are so fond of Shaman Drum as the local small bookstore, that they solely use Shaman Drum to distribute their coursebooks. While it may be confusing on first glance, the regular bookstore is on the street level, and to get to the textbooks you must take the stairs on the side and go upstairs. The staff is typically very friendly and helpful as the layout upstairs may be a bit confusing.

This review is split between the upstairs textbook store and the downstairs general bookstore.

I have always enjoyed browsing in the lower store. They have a great variety of books, fiction or otherwise. The staff is helpful and often has good recommendations based on your taste in reading.

The upper section, which is textbooks, was nothing save for annoying. The staff is helpful, only because if they werne't, you'd never find your textbooks. The line for this store during the beginning of the year starts at the top of the stairs and stretches down two flights, out the door, and around the block. I hated having to get books here, and was annoyed by the pretentious professors who would order their books here, and only here, forcing me to stand outside/in line for literally hours, and pay exhorbitant prices. It further irritated me (the first time it happened) that the book buy back was downstairs...I hadn't purchased the book from "downstairs", so I waited in line for an hour only to be told to go downstairs. Policy wasn't written anywhere.

I went into this bookstore once and have not been swayed to go back in again. Though I like independent book stores, this one was too impersonal and pricey. It lacked the warmth and general atmosphere of most huge bookstores and just was not too welcoming. I could find much better stuff at Borders or Waldenbooks.

Some people prefer Shaman Drum because it's not a chain bookstore. It's independent, and has an academic/scholarly feeling around it.

Shaman Drum might be an independent bookstore, but it's no better than the chains. The service is relatively impersonal and the prices are not impressive.

I don't like chain stores any more than the next guy, but I prefer Borders to Shaman Drum.

PROS: Independent, Not a Chain
CONS: Everything Else
