I had ordered a cake for my husbands birthday (a month in advance). My husband was going to be out of town when his party was supposed to be so I called to cancel the cake. I had placed a 25.00 deposit that I assumed would be refunded since there was NO CAKE made, I gave plenty of notice and no, they wouldn't return my deposit. It wasn't like I called the day before, it was 2 weeks before!
The staff is something else, not friendly at all. Considering how much they charge for thier cakes, you'd think they would treat their customers a little better. Hopefully with economy issues, they're feeling it. Besides, the cakes don't taste "the best in the world", they do nice things with frosting but that's about it.

Bad Customer Service. The staff was so rude there. The cakes do look beautiful and taste great but it is hard to order a cake there when you have been treated poorly.

I have been a customer of Home Bakery for over the past 12 years now, and I can not say enough GOOD things about the quality and customer service that is offered at my local bakery!
I order cakes throughout the year from the Home Bakery for birthdays, and other special occasions. I also LOVE their pastries and their chocolate chip cookies are the BEST!
Another reason why myself, and my friends, near and far, come to the Home Bakery is for the WONDERFUL customer service. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and patient. I have never had a negative experience with the store front staff. I am greeted with a smile everytime!
I am quite surprised by such negativity, especially from this 'Lillian' review. I am a FIRM believer that WHAT YOU PUT OUT, COMES RIGHT BACK TO YOU. Meaning, if you have a negative additude, or perhaps you are the type of person to 'HUFF AND PUFF' when you do not get your way, then perhaps you will perceive everyone around you as 'incompetent'.
I LOVE the Home Bakery. KUDOS to the owner and the staff!

My suggestion to those of you that obviously can not be satisified, and to protect your negative Karma....BAKE AND DECORATE YOUR OWN CAKE!

Happy Holidays to everyone!

I should start by saying that I have been buying cakes at The Home Bakery for years, but this will be my last. The cake is usually above average, but the customer service is the worst! I would have given ZERO stars but that was not an option. I ordered a cake three months in advance of a birthday party. After receiving the RSVPs, I realized I would need more cake. I called a week before the party and ordered an additional side cake to make sure that we had enough. The person on the phone said "no problem" and the cakes would be ready on Saturday and I could pick them up any time between noon and two. I arrived at around 1:30 to pick up the cakes and the salesperson came out of the kitchen with just one cake. When I asked about the second cake, she said "This is it." I explained that I had called back for an additional cake for 12 extra people and she said "Your order was for one cake and here it is. You can't just walk in on a Saturday and expect us to bake you a cake." After some discussion, she said that she had another cake in the back that could be ready in twenty minutes. She made it sound like she was doing me a favor making the additional cake that was already part of my order. I had other last minute stops to make to get ready for the party, so after 30 minutes of waiting, I was getting a little frustrated. When I asked if it was ready, the saleswoman seemed irritated that I would even ask about the cake. After 55 minutes, she came out with a plain undecorated cake way larger than I said I needed. I said "How about a discount since you made me wait almost an hour and it's way larger than I said I needed and you lost my order." She went into the back and a male baker came out. He said "The order didn't say anything about an extra cake and how do I know you didn't just come in here and say that to get a discount" We said you could pick up the cake between noon and two and it's two twenty-five, so you only waited twenty-five minutes. " I couldn't believe the tone he was using and what he was accusing me of. Both the male baker and female manager were yelling loudly at me. Also, I had been there almost an hour, so his time argument didn't even make sense. At this point I had already paid, so he told me "Take your cake and get out of here." I told them that I felt this was poor customer service and that I was disappointed with the treatment. Another lady also said " Get out of here we don't need you here". It reminded me of the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld. The store is so busy on a Saturday that the salespeople are almost angry at the customers. There are several bakery options in the area. Some are better, some are less expensive, and some are better AND less expensive. I guess they just don't care about loosing a customer. I felt I was kind but direct and did not deserve this treatment especially after spending a great deal of money. I WILL NEVER ORDER ANOTHER CAKE FROM HOME BAKERY AGAIN.

Ordered my wedding cake a few weeks ago and it took my breath away! I had so many compliments! It was all done out of buttercream and had fresh strawberries inside. We didn't have a single piece left! I will put a picture on your facebook and bring you in a picture for your website. Thank you for an amazing piece of work!

Awful customer service, forgot to deliver part of the order (which was party favors for children at the party), waited for a call for week after they said they would call, upon me calling them back - just got ruthless service. Manager Stephanie wouldn't get on the phone - had to call twice for my refund for cupcakes. Had specified NOT to add strawberries in the cake, and had just that - ended up with having a guest who had an allergic reaction to it! Icing on the cake - tasted as if somebody hurried and poured in sugar - tasted crystals! Yes, they make "pretty cakes", and now established with lots of customers - so they have the attitude (with 3 of the staff I spoke), that they just don't care. One lady said, "nobody knew what the second order was" when asked how come the cupcakes weren't delivered! What could've been a really good experience with referrals and more orders, will not ever happen again!!! You see, one bad experience is one too many - I hope you treat all of your customers with integrity - not some, not one, and not just only when you can! I can't believe somebody so superb in customer service such as KiddieKlub uses your service - what a shame!

UPDATE 03/31/11

I got a "reply" on the same review I submitted on "insiderpages.com", from a staff named "Sue". I am even more disgusted with their dishonesty! I have had my same cell phone # for almost 12 years now, and yet to be disconnected! Both KiddieKlub, and the bakery has the correct number as they've both called me prior to the event to confirm information. And, I have YET to receive this letter they are talking about, providing explanation. It won't be suprising if I were to get one after today. My goodness - When a customer complains about a service, (at least in my case), all I wanted was a SINCERE apology and also see what they would do to enable my next visit there, if there was going to be any to begin with after all of this. What a disaster! This is the last comment I will share about them online! A very wise man once said, "Do what you do so well that they will want to see it again and bring their friends." I don't think your 'company' understands that concept!

I normally hate sheet cakes. they are usually stall with a foot of frosting. But one time I went to my friend's birthday where she got a cake from the home bakery. IT WAS THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER TASTED!
P.S. If you are like me and want to know what kind of cake it was. It was a vanilla cake with cram on top and fresh fruit! :)

I went to the Home Bakery several days ago to try some of their pastries. I had read some of the reviews and even though I heard that they were less than satisfactory from friends who have gone there before I figured I would give it a try. I found that the chocolate chip cookies were hard and tasted like they were several days old and stale and the jelly filling in the danish tasted like it came out of a bag. My kids did not even want to finish their goodies. I saw below how a staff member tried to defend their product however I find that if one has to defend the product on a review page it's tasteless and shows that maybe the product is not so good. A person confident in their product would be able to let the product talk for itself. Needless to say I will not be going back nor recommending the bakery to any of my friends

My wedding cake was from Home Bakery, and it was more beautiful then I could have imagined. It was the best tasting cake i've ever had as well. I got so compliments on the how good the cake was, and even people agreeing and saying it was the best wedding cake they'd ever had.. The staff was very helpful with design ideas and very patient with me not knowing what i wanted. I also love their cranberry muffins.

THANK YOU to all the loyal customers who have said wonderful comments. To the misinformed and the ones who slander businesses- our butter cream is NOT made of lard and we donate our pastries DAILY. Out of hundreds of cakes that go out weekly, there will always be a customer who can NOT be satisfied.

The old owners were so very nice, and they had a fantastic tasing home-made cake. They use to donate their week-end left over baked goods to the soup kitchen.
The new cakes have an animal fat lard taste to them, in my opinion. The frosting from what I hear is not made with real butter, and when we purchased the cake recently, the center frosting was thin, so why the high price?
But I have been told by a few people that the owners are rude and thoughtless so I wonder what that means for the people who get hired?
It's not the place it used to be :(

Home Bakery did my baby shower cake and it was both beautiful AND delicious!! Their buttercream is amazing and the cake is so moist it melts in your mouth. They went above and beyond to make me an edible baby pig to top the cake and it came out better than I could have imagined. The cake was the talk of the baby shower. I highly recommend Home Bakery for your next special event!

I have to disagree with calicrowned. I have ordered close to one hundred cakes from Home Bakery over the last twenty-five years, including birthday, wedding and shower cakes. I have never been disappointed. When my children were young and wanted a particular theme, I would simply give the idea and the decorators took it from there. I was always amazed by the creativity and perfection of the designs. As far as taste, I very much disagree with you. Not only are there many batter and filing choices, but they are all delicious. Always moist and fresh. The buttercream frosting is wonderful and just as good is their poured chocolate topping. I can't imagine comparing a Home Bakery cake to a Kroger cake......there is simply no comparison. Perhaps I have not sampled as many cakes in my lifetime as you apparently have, but I know what tastes good! As far as customer service is concerned.......I have NEVER had a negative experience. Every time I've been in the bakery I have been waited on quickly and politely. When I ordered a wedding cake for my sister, I was very pleased with the attentive manner of the staff and the choices I was give. This is a wonderful bakery and I will be a life-long customer.

I'm new to MI, as of 08, and I have been looking for my new favorite bakery for months. I found Home Bakery by driving through Downtown Rochester. I immediately had high hopes when I entered the establishment and noticed many wonderfully designed examples displayed throughout. Initially, the younger blond girl who helped me was kind as I initiated conversation about their specialties. She then opened up and compared their establishment to "Ace Of Cakes" and that really sparked my curiousity. We (my fiance and I) tried a cupcake since we weren't in the market for an actual cake yet, and it was fine for a cupcake (nothing at all like Cupcake Station, wow, now they have amazing cupcakes - watch out Sprinkles!!). All the while, thinking that most top bakeries, (such as Hansens Cakes in Tarzana - just a bit north of Los Angeles - whom are rude also, but have gorgeous, tasty-delicious cakes), have great differences in their batter, fillings and frostings used in ordered cakes vs cupcakes and sample pieces for tastings. Could be the freshness or just plain attention they get.
So, of course, when a birthday came around I jumped at the chance to try my new found bakery. I excitedly phoned in my order, only to be greeted by a non concerned woman who slammed down the rules of ordering cakes and did not even bother to inform me of the proper price of the cake. She just seemed like she didn't like her job. To be honest, I think any person who even has a job during these horrible times of our current economy should greatly appreciate the value of a customer, especially a new customer who loves to spread the news about a great new find. I shrugged away the rudeness of the order taker cause I still had not tasted one of their works of art. But sure enough, when I arrived to pick up my cake, I was promptly waited on by a woman with dark hair who just seemed very ill faced with no pleasant greeting at all. She informed me that my cake was even more than quoted over the phone and it's a really good thing I stopped at the bank to get more cash because they don't take cards. She showed me the cake and I was very pleased with the classy design, which was included in the price. Then came my biggest disappointment - the cake tasted just a step or two above a box job, the filling tasted like it was either from a jar of jelly or mass produced sold by the can. The buttercream frosting was okay, but lacked some authenticity. And thats why I would compare Home Bakery's cakes to Kroger's. Perhaps this place must get a lot of people who just have not been outside of Metro Detroit. Im sure I alone will not break the loyal customers of Home Bakery, but loyal customers beware that they ought to treat you better and perhaps lower the price of their cakes that really ought to be compared to Kroger. I'm not sure if they are "Zagat Rated" one might check!!
Mind you, I did not have a confrontation nor do I think they were even aware of my disappointment. I gave them every benefit of the doubt, until I ate the cake!
Bottom line - Beautifully designed and will get your guests visual approvals.
I'm gonna keep looking!!!

Pros: Yes, I will admit, the cakes are beautifully designed.

Cons: Poor customer service and not really all that good in taste.

My only experience with the HOME Bakery was when my wife passed away. My employer sent a gift basket from HOME Bakery. It was a giant basket filled with individually wrapped Danish rolls, muffins, cookies, a raspberry loaf, a loaf of bread and a couple of things I can't name. Every single item was perfectly moist, attractive and bursting with taste. So, I got a lot of variety of items to try and I can't think of a single thing to say that's negative about any item, and I tried them all. Thus, I feel justified in stating my opinion. I would highly recommend this bakery to all of my family and friends. Because this was a gift, I cannot speak about the price. But, because of the quality of their product, I would expect to pay a higher price. We're not talking about Twinkies here. These are superior baked goods and I know my baked goods. Give them a try!

I love this bakery! They did our wedding cake, and even though there was a slight problem with the top (due to a VERY WARM day), they did a new top before any got to the reception!
I ordered a baby shower cake from them for an out-of town shower. It was worth it, as even was raving about it!
All desserts are fab! Customer service is great!
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!

Pros: One of a kind cakes. Can do wonderful flavor combos

Cons: None that I can think of - you are paying for a work of art!

Folks this is the very best Bakery in Michigan, No Kidding. Their bakery items are full of flavor, moist, nicely sized, and just delicious. One can order just about anything, because speciality is their expertise, and they are glad to help you design whatever. Some find their prices to be on the high side until they order something, then that myth quickly disappears. I order a special Christmas cake every year from Tennessee, for my family in Michigan, that is always praised. The following will show you how well priced their items are, here is my cake. 10-inch Chocolate layer cake, with Raspberry Cream Filling, Poured Smooth Chocolate Icing, Decorated with large Poinsettia and Holly on top, then Holly Designs around total bottom edge, served on a red cake platform, cost $68.00, and marvelous! There is only one comment/suggestion that I can make to the bakery, is to have a web-site, so I could pass their link around. They do not offer delivery, but this should not stop you from trying their wonderful products, as I promise you will truly enjoy!

3-D pink poodle cake for my daughter's first birthday. Pokemon for my son, CD player for my other daughter, Hawaiian Luau scene for my friend's wedding shower, gift-wrapped present for my Christmas party ( so realistic that my guests thought the buffet was the gift table)....the list goes on and the inspiration is endless!

Home Bakery is the gold-standard of cake decorating while keeping their cakes moist and delicious!

Pros: Cakes keep well a day before the party and freeze for 3 months and you'd swear it was made yesterday!

Cons: 3D, or sculpted, cakes are expensive...but worth it!

Locally, this bakery is well known for it speciality cakes. I had to have a cake made for my daughters graduation party. She wanted her picture on, school colors, and certain frosting and style. Home Bakery was able to pull it off and the cake was great. Sometimes we just are wandering through the stores nearby and stop in for a snack. They have great cokies, brownies and alot of other pasteries. I think the prices are average, but well worth the cost. Great place.

We ordered a custom cake for a party last year. It was a moderately complicated cake as we wanted two flavors and a specific decoration. The Home Bakery did a great job as the cake was completed and delivered on time. It tasted fresh, and was decorated exactly as requested. Their prices are not the cheapest around, but they are very reasonable and well worth every penny.

We've used Home Bakery for all of our family birthday cakes since 1999. The cakes are absolutely delicious. We always get positive feedback from the parents of our daughters friends as well as our own guests on the creative designs of the cakes. In fact, we get "new believers" from our guests every year and have noticed how many of our friends and neighbors are now ordering their cakes from Home Bakery. They can be a bit pricey depending on what you want but you won't regret it. We've even established Home Bakery as one of our preferred suppliers for corporate events. They can also deliver if you need it. Customer service is great. They aim to please!
