I signed up for a membership last year and I did so because of the price ($9/month). However the priced was raised without notifying clients (except some flyer that was found sitting on the desk). The place is dirty, the equipment is hard to adjust because the mechanisms are jammed, and many do not work properly, vinyl padding is torn, floor is uneven and a big trip hazard, and bathrooms are gross. The place is not well ventilated and we were told the price was raised due to recent improvements but no one can tell you what those improvements were. The parking is filled with litter from people throwing water bottles on the ground and yet no one ever cleans it up. If there was another gym closer to my home I would cancel my membership.

Pros: close to my home

Cons: dirty, poorly kept equipment

Powerhouse Gym in Brownstown is a good, clean, well managed gym; but don't hold up equipment since it is crowded. Lousy locker room. It is one of 3 gyms owned by Al Ferris. But upwards to 1000 of his members are frustrated and angry after they were told in 2008 if they plunked down $108 and paid $9 dollars a month, that price would never go up. A year later it went up to $12 a month. Turns out we all signed a contract that said, despite the sales pitch, that the owner could raise fees any time he wants. Do not trust Al Ferris. Do not buy lifetime or extended contracts.

Pros: Young crowd, serious gym

Cons: Very crowded, wait for cardio machines
