I am a very particular person when it comes to Chinese food. This restaurant is exceptional in every way - period!

Their food is delicious, the service is excellent and the environment is exceptional! I have eaten inside of the restaurant and also done carry out. Both, are excellent in the quality and taste of their food.

The very best Chinese food that I've ever had! I've lived in Asia - China Cafe is outstanding !!!

Try them! You will not be disappointed!

As a non-native to Michigan, I was extremely skeptical about comnig to here. Walking in, I was surprised by how full the place was, and how many people were walking out with Carry Out. \r
\r
As for the ambiance, I would say if your favorite little Italian place in New York was tranformed into an Italian restaurant, then you'd have China Cafe. We ordered a mix of American Chinese food and food from the Korean side and were pleasantly surprised by both. The modern asian fusion food was great, and yet the basic Korean spicey seafood soup was likely the best I've had in the United States. Full of flavor and ingredients, this restaurant is a great blend of old world Asian cuisine and modern flare.\r

Did I mention that this place is clean?

This is one of the best restaurants I have had the pleasure to visit. The people that work there are great, everyone has a smile on their face and are happy to serve you. Our waitress Tracy was very helpful and recommended the asparagus beef and the firecracker shrimp, both dishes were delicious and you can tell that they make their dishes fresh when you order. I live in Livonia and will be driving to Novi from now on to get my carryout. I urge everyone that enjoys great Chinese Food to try this restaurant, you won't be disappointed!

Pros: Awesome food and atmosphere

Cons: nothing

.

I highly highly highly recommend this restaurand for several reasons.

First, the service is superb. I've always said that you can go anywhere to get good food, but what people remember is the service. When you walk in you are greeted with a warm smile, and when you leave you always get a thank you...whether it be from the hostess or from one of the owners from behind the bar, they make a point to let you know they are thankful you chose their restaurant. It isn't just the regulars that get the warm greetings and goodbyes...I always sit at the bar and eat, so I am near the door and can hear them. It is literally every person that walks in the door that is made to feel like they have been coming their all their lives!

Secondly, the food. Earlier I said that you can get good food from anywhere...because I believe that if you are a restaurant , especially in this economic time, that you server ""good"" food...and people are relatively satisfied. I can tell you with complete honesty that I have NEVER been disappointed with a meal I've eaten at China Cafe. I have been going there for over 6 years, usually at least once a week...and I have tried almost everything on the menu (and a lot of things not on the menu!). If you are in one of those finicky moods, just let them know what you feel like and they will accommodate you. Another thing I'd like to mention about the food is the pride the owners take in every dish that is served. Kelly (one of the owners) is in the kitchen each night, working on the line and cooking alongside his kitchen staff...he takes great pride in the dishes that they create and it shows in the quality of food that they serve to their guests.

Lastly, the atmosphere is incredible. Definitely not what you would expect to find in any Chinese restaurant, especially one tucked in a small plaza. The decor is modern, with a Chinese flair (a fusion if you will!) You can easily spot the influences of the Asian culture without it being like what many of us imagine a typical Chinese restaurant looks like. I think that the genuine friendliness of the owners and the staff somehow carry over to the guests. I say that because I always see smiling happy faces, either in the dining room or at the comfortable bar. I always eat at the bar, and the other guests are always conversing and laughing and enjoying themselves...it truly is an experience.

Anyone who enjoys great food and a comfortable atmosphere needs to make a visit to 10 Mile and Novi road.

Cons: Closed on Mondays and I always seem to crave them on Monday!

From just the website and location, I asked for a buffet dinner to be delivered for 50 people in town for a competition. What a great find!! From the moment I called, they could not have been more helpful or accommodating. Food was delivered early, hot and in great quantity complete with chopsticks, plates, napkins, serving utensils, fortune cookies and even little signs to identify the different trays. The food got rave reviews and the cost per person was cheaper than our boxed lunches! We will definitely be calling again when we return next year.

WE MADE RESERVATIONS AT THIS RESTAURANT FOR MY BIRTHDAY. WHEN WE ARRIVED WE GREETED THE HOSTESS. WE WERE TOLD IT WOULD BE A FEW MINUTES. AS I SAW WALK-INS BEING SEATED, I WENT TO THE HOSTESS AND REMINDED HER THAT WE HAD RESERVATIONS. SHE SAID THEY WERE BUSY AND WE WOULD BE SEATED WHEN THERE WAS AN AVAILABLE TABLE. I WAS NOT HAPPY AND SHE WAS RUDE AS SHE TOLD ME IT PAID TO BE NICE. I WOULD NOT GIVE MY BUSINESS TO PEOPLE WHO DID NOT CARE AND WE LEFT AND WENT TO ANOTHER RESTAURANT WHO TREATED US LIKE GOLD.

Great place to eat, hang out for a cocktail or pickup a carryout. The food was fantastic and the owner you can tell takes great pride in his food. I sat at the bar to eat. Very little smoke and the service was perfect.\r

Pros: Food

It is perhaps the best Chinese food store in the entire area. The people are very amiable and the food is consistently good. I have the orange chicken almost once a week as my reward for making it through the week. I have also dined there with friends and the atmosphere is not what you'd expect to be lying along a strip mall; it is very sheik. My only critique was that the egg roll recipe has changed and not for the better. Aside from that, I highly recommend for anyone who enjoys Chinese and classy atmospheres.

I traveled from the East side of Detroit to experience exceptional Chinese Cuisine @ the China Cafe. The atmosphere and freshly prepared Chinese Cuisine was fantastic. I did not realize how the food could differ in such a wonderful unique way. My meal was prepared fresh and made to order with fresh vegtables & other fabulous ingredients. This was the best Chinese Cuisine I have ever experienced, the staff was exceptional and the pride taken was apparent by the food, service and establishment. If you are looking to experience great Chinese I highly reccomend the China Cafe in Novi ( You Won't Be Disappointed)!

The food is not the best I have ever had; though the crab rangoon can't compete w/ anyone else's!!\r
(Golden House Chinese Restaurant in Howell, MI ROCKS!! )\r
The servers watch you like hawks (kind of makes you feel like you can't take your time and enjoy.)\r
The atmosphere is not your typical Chinese restaurant; yes, it's modern, but nice!\r
Odd location, you would never would know it's there if you didn't know!\r
Pricey.

If you have never tried China Cafe, you owe it to yourself to do so! But be prepared, this restaurant completely redefines the 'Chinese restaurant' experience. From the comfortable, contemporary decor to the elegant execution of the dishes, this place has never disappointed. My husband is an excellent cook himself, so it is very difficult for us to find a place that really offers us an outstanding experience at a reasonable price. He never turns down an opportunity to visit China Cafe, even though it's about 25 miles away from our home! Always ask about the specials. They use interesting ingredients - egg plant, Chinese basil, delicious ginger coconut sauces -and the quality of expertly prepared vegetables, meat and seafood is always impressive. We are excited about their brand-new menu. Above and beyond the outstanding quality of the food are the people. The wait staff are extremely polite and attentive, and owners Kelly and Susanna go out of their way to make everyone feel welcomed. They make a point of trying to really get to know their customers as individuals. Everything combined makes eating at China Cafe an excellent experience!

I have been going to China Cafe regularly since it opened. Kelly and Susanah are fantastic people - one or both is always up front to greet and talk with guests. The food and service is consistently excellent, and it is one of the best restaurants in the area. The pricing is beyond fair, given the quality of the food, presentation, and atmosphere. Everyone I have referred this restaurant to has thanked me for giving them a new favorite place to eat.

I absolutely love the food here!! They need to open more locations so I can go there more often. Kelly & Suzanna are so welcoming and friendly. They will prepare any dish that you like, even if it's not on the menu. Clearly the people that wrote negative feed back... must be jealous that their business is not doing as well as the China Cafe!!!

I used work nearby for 2 years and HAD to go to this place a number of times. I can't understand all the hype about this place. I have tried almost every dish on the menu and can definitely say that it doesn't deserve it. Service is not impressive either. The decor is good though and the place does not stink.

Don't go out of your way. The rambling and subjective reviews are written by vainglorious locals who think Novi is the culinary center of the universe. In one sentence: if you think the Lions are going to win the Super Bowl, you'll think the food at China Cafe is great.

Please ignore the supercilious jerkoffs who've given China Cafe a 1 out of 5 here. It's ridiculous to call this restaurant ""lower than the average"" typical neighborhood spot, or whatever the Einstein who made that comment said. It's always possible to have a less than satisfying experience at an otherwise consistently great establishment. Like the character who judged this place on the basis of having sat next to a table of people drinking too much. Poor baby. Did you ask for another table? Or to have the people asked to keep it down? Or did you just sit there and fume? \r
\r
China Cafe has a very atypical menu, though you can still get standard, boring Americanized favorites if you're a standard, boring American. They're just better here than at most chinese eateries. But the specialities this kitchen turns out are often exceptional. And in ten years of dining here - or however long it's been open - I have rarely ordered from the menu. Grab some imagination, fellow reviewers, and ask for something that hasn't already been thought up and mapped out for you! In turning Kelly, co-owner and head chef, loose with just a few parameters, he's produced some of the most amazing, one of a kind dishes I've ever enjoyed. Did you even try something adventurous from the Korean specialties menu? If you eat at a restaurant with the capacity to turn out remarkably good, unique meals and only order predictable westernized ""chinese"" dishes, you have no one to blame but yourself if that's precisely what you get. To anyone contemplating a first visit to China Cafe, by all means go and order something you've never heard of. Ask Susana, the hostess and co-owner, what's especially good tonight? Ask her to recommend something customized, not from the menu. One of my favorite dishes, Ching Dao Shrimp, has never been on the menu, but I've ordered it dozens of times. China Cafe is not a below average, not a good, but a great Chinese restaurant, the best, for my $$, in town.

I know why this restaurant is popular!!! The people at the table next to me were so drunk they could have been eating dog food. I'm not kidding. They kept ordering round after round. Drunks will scarf down anything just to keep drinking. And the waitress could not bring them drinks fast enough. Everyone was really happy. Thrilled. That has got to be it. And they will roll into here time after time... as long as the well does not run dry. Oh, the food? Who you kidding?

Did not care for the food or ambiance. Do not understand all the hype. It is on the low end (very low end) of typical suburban Chinese fare. There is a bar scene but that is not why we drove 15 miles. We will not return to The China Cafe in Novi.

We have no affiliation with any other local resturant. Don't own one. Don't work in one. We work hard and don't like to be conned when we spend money eating out. From the looks of the other people who have written reviews stating they don't care for this place, the owner comments on the poor reviews.... This time tou can save your time, Pal. The food in this restaurant is indefensible. It's a total con job. Try serving good food rather than good excuses.

Just went there tonight and I was impressed! I was skeptical due to some of the bad reviews on here but was persuaded to go check it out and was pleasantly surprised! Orange chicken was great as was the fried rice soup and the service was great. Orange chicken was 10.95 for a TON of all white meat chicken and I loved each piece so much I appeared pregnant on the way out haha. Check this place out!

I'm looking for a Chinese restaurant where I can eat: I have an MSG allergy. Not this one! I asked for steamed tofu in Genreal Tso's sauce and steamed vegetables in rice with some kind of tasty sauce with no MSG and no oils. They say ""we don't add MSG to anything"" whch means, if you question them closely, that their sauce ingredients are purchased ready-made from outside and all contain MSG. I was clearly told ""There is nothing you can eat here."" OK... I'll go to Hong Hua on Orchard Lake Rd where they will make me food from scratch without MSG. China Cafe is closer to where I work, but if they are going to feed me out of jar... oh well...

Are you kidding me? People HONESTLY think that this is a one-star restaurant? I call shenanigans- these negative reviews are likely from owners of competing restaurants trying to bring down the best Chinese restaurant on the west side. The wait staff is phenomenal - I have never reached the bottom of my glass without it being cheerfully refilled. Everything is fresh and tasty. The Mongolian Beef and General Tso's chicken are our favorites. The menu has great variety, and the entire staff is very kid-friendly (one time they even offered to take our daughter to show her the fish when they saw that she had finished before us). We cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. We are regulars, but not because we're barflies - we come only for the excellent food.

After reading the reviews, we tried the China Cafe. Sorry to say we have to agree with the ones that say many of the 5 star reviews for The China Cafe must be a hoax. 100% FICTION. The China Cafe is a local watering hole that happens to serve something that resembles Chinese Food. Barely.\r

Detroit News Restaurant Critic Molly Abraham does not jump up and down about the China Cafe. Why is that? Because she knows food: Nuff Said.\r

By the way, ""Dofu"" is spelled Tofu in English. Unless you are the owner -- writing your own review for The China Cafe. Please read the review below and draw your own conclusion.

After reading the reviews, we tried the China Cafe. Sorry to say we have to agree with the ones that say many of the 5 star reviews for The China Cafe must be a hoax. 100% FICTION. The China Cafe is a local watering hole that happens to serve something that resembles Chinese Food. Barely.\r

Cons: Owners review their own Food!

We called ahead for reservations since we were a large party (6 adults and 4 kids). The staff were friendly, energetic, helpful and made us feel quite at home. \r
The Sea Bass was very fresh and delicious. I ordered mine a little spicy and just loved it. I'm not usually a fish eater, either. I also loved the salad that came with it. It was a yummy combination of sweet and salty, crisp and nutty. \r
I also sampled my friend's Gung-Pao Chicken. The sauce was just wonderful!\r
I wanted to try my husband's Dofu dish, but he snarfed it down before I got a chance to sample (sigh). \r
No problem, we will definitely go back. It is well worth the drive from Ypsilanti. \r
My friends also enjoyed the appetizers of pot-stickers and a sweet, cream-cheese-filled, fried dumpling. I think it is called Rangoon or something like that. \r
The chef and owner came out and asked us how we liked everything. We were happy to tell him the food was delicious.

The food tasted old. Service was poor. The vibe was just terrible. It's like half a resturant and half a 19th hole kind of place. \r

Calling China Cafe 'medicore' would be a compliment. \r

We were tricked by the padded reviews. The food is tasteless.\r
\r
China Cafe must bribe their ""favorite"" customers with free food or free drinks to write glowing reviews of the poor food.\r

Imagine being bribed with this food!

Always in the mood to try a new Chinese restaurant in the area -- I gave China Cafe a shot. I took two friends for dinner. None of us drink beer, wine or mixed drinks. The waitress ignored us after we ordered water. I'll make it simple... \r
\r
The positive reviews for China Cafe -- come from the barflies. \r
\r
The negative reviews come from people who like good food. \r
\r
Pure and simple. \r

5 stars = Barfly.\r

I never post in these sites...but the review before mine prompted me to do it this time. The China Cafe is so highly rated by other members here BECAUSE of the service the owners and staff provide. I know not everybody will love the food everywhere they go. I happen to really enjoy the food at the China Cafe. In fact, I trust that the food will always be great....so usually I'll show up, sit at the bar, and will take the special of the day or I will have Kelly whip something new up. I personally think they have the best Chinese food around. \r
\r
But...it is the service that really makes people return to the China Cafe. The owners, Kelly and Susanna, are so friendly and social. You could come in just one time, and they will greet you by your name the next time you arrive. If you stand by the bar for 5 minutes....you will realize that almost everyone there is a regular. That is a fact....most people that go to the China Cafe are regulars who have been going for years.\r
\r
I brag about the China Cafe to everyone. I've even had my family drive from over an hour away just to eat there. Again...you could have the top rated restuarant in the nation, and you will find somebody that doesnt' like the food. And would bet that is the case with the previous poster. It just wasn't for them. But the overwhelming consensus here is positive for the China Cafe.

Citysearch never failed us until the china cafe. \r
\r
After our very mediocre meal, I took another look at the reviews on this page. I wondered how so many customers could revel in such unimaginative food. \r
\r
Over 75% of the 5 star reviews called the owners by name. There is no other example of this on Citysearch.\r
\r
If you value Citysearch (and we do) -- watch out -- The deck is stacked at this restaurant. \r
\r
This is not 5 star food. The only way citysearch can work -- is for customers to be fair and honest. Not by helping the owners stack the deck.

We ate at China Cafe and we will never return. The generic sauces could have been poured from a bottle. The flavors were non-existant. We ventured into the China Cafe based on word of mouth. That is the problem. This is Chinese food for Yoopers. If you have never had the real deal; you have no way to compre the China cafe to any other Chinese food. In the U.P., there is usually only one Chinese restaurant per town. Yoopers have no basis for comparision. The owners are The China Cafe must have little or no respect for their customers. Otherwise they would not pretend to be serving good Chinese food. When any REAL food critics in 2007 rave about the China Cafe -- we will return. Maybe that would signal a change in management. The owners of the China Cafe have duped their customers. When those customers taste good Chinese food, the China Cafe will be gone. Perhaps relocated to the U.P.\r

I have frequented China Cafe for several years now, for three reasons: their service, the food and its value. To me, a great chef is defined by his sauces. This is what separates Kelly Chang's food from the other Chinese restaurants in town. From the savory oyster sauce with his sea bass, to sweet , or the spicy five pepper shrimp, it's tough to choose from the menu, so I often ask Kelly to surprise me. I used to go to Windsor for this quality. Susana and Kelly are great hosts, but I always feel welcomed by his friendly staff, who know my kids names and always ask about them when we visit. By the way, ask him if he found anything special on that day's shopping for fresh entrees. You might be surprised by talapia or spare ribs that aren't on the menu! Not just a great Chinese restaurant, a great restaurant period.

My wife is Chinese. We lived in China. We went to the China Cafe in Novi based on positve reviews @citysearch. What a terrible letdown. The food is not Chinese. I could go into detail about each item -- but what's the point? The fact is: This resturant would be laughed out of China. Laughed out of L.A. & NYC. \r
\r
Don't be fooled. There are 53 reviews (until this one) telling people how great the food tastes at The China Cafe. Don't fall for it. If you are going to go out of your way; find another Chinese resturant. Frozen food has more life than the pale imitation of Chinese food served at the China Cafe.

I love chinese food, and have lived all over this country. One of my favorite dishes is the aforementioned Mongolian Beef. I have looked all over my general area (Dearborn, Westland) with little sucess on finding this dish the way I preferred it prepared. Looking for a new chef, I ventured to this board and it's recommendation as to ""top"" dining Chinese in the Detroit area. \r
I must say, you all are spot on as it pertains to this dining experience.\r
They get a FIVE STAR rating from me. Tops - you wont be dissapointed !!!\r
\r
As for pricing, I must confess I do not care... The meal is the focus. A bad meal is not made better by a cheap price. A great meal transends being described by a price. The price honestly didn't even occur to me. Enjoy the savory talents of this chef if you like the balance of flavors dancing in harmony!\r
\r
My 2c.

After reading numerous reviews here on CitySearch we decided to give it a try on a whim one day. We were in the area and stopped by for some takeout. This place was HOPPING, it was a Friday evening around 5:30pm. The phones were ringing off the hook, it was unbelievable. Looked like a call-center for a large corporation! It only took about 20 minutes to get our carry out order (not bad considering!), and when we got home we started feasting. The food was absolutely delicious, and the price was very reasonable. Our family of 4 made 2-3 meals out of this, and the total bill was ~$30.00. As others have before, I would highly recommend this place - Easily the best tasting Chinese I've had in the area, the Beef Fried Rice was excellent and the General Tso's chicken was very unique (and good I might add!).

I found China Cafe to be the best tasting Chinese food I've found in the states. The wait-staff was more than friendly from entry to exit, always attentive but not bothersome. The food was plentiful (I've never left without a doggy-bag), and the taste was beyond expectations. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. I highly recommend China Cafe to those who are looking for value and great Chinese food with effiicient service.

To me there is no other Chinese resturant to go to. The food is the best I've tasted, ever. Don't get me wrong, I still like to grille a juicy steak on my own, but you really have to eat this food to be able to describe it. The taste of the various dishes leaves your pallette and appetite fulfilled to the max. As a sales rep also, I have used China Cafe for events. Besides these accounts asking specifically for China Cafe again, they also visit the resturant on their own driving many miles to get there. The wait staff are very diligent about keeping you satisfied, from when you walk in, to keeping your glass of cola filled. The cost is moderate, I feel below what this resturant could charge. A must for those looking for a great meal.

With all due respect, WAY too much hype on this one. Food was good but not great. Overpriced given the quality and portions. Wait staff was less than attentive, bordering on rude. Perhaps others see something we didn't!

Although you wouldn't suspect it from the exterior, this is a really great Chinese restaurant. This was my first time eating there and I was glad to discover that they can back up the hype. The restaurant was busy during the lunch hour but we were seated and served quickly. The General Tso chicken is really excellent. The hot and sour soup was pleasently more sour than the typical fare one would normally be served in almost every other similar type of Chinese restaurant. The staff were friendly and helpful and the interior design is much more put-together than most strip-mall Chinese places I've been to. Don't get me wrong, I love a hole-in-the-wall restaurant as much if not more than anyone I know, but this place just seemed more well thought out than most without coming across as trying too hard. The restaurant seems comfortable in its skin and confident about its abilities to provide really good food at good prices. I'll be back to try the lettuce wraps!

We ate here tonight...and it was definately worth the trip. We ate a late dinner, so the place seemed more like a bar with some tables...but it was a cute place. The waitress recommended the dinner for 4 for us..and it was more than enough for 5 people. The food was absolutely delicious! The hot and sour soup, crab rangoons, mongolian beef, general tso's chicken, hawaiian chicken, and the chicken eggs rolls were some of the best (if not the best) that I have tasted. Needless to say, we will be back.
