It's been well over 5 years since my last meal at Sultan's, and from what I could remember back then it was a pretty good overall experience. We passed over Woody's Oasis to go to a nice sit-down place w/ more room. At this visit they were short staffed (1 waiter) but we were eventually seated. The waiter was quite stressed, so we made sure to order promptly and asap.

In trying to do too many things at once, the waiter brought over several glasses of water (for 2 tables) and inadvertantly spilled the tray w/ 4 glasses of ice water all over the floor and table. That, however, wasn't the reason for the below average rating. I ordered the Lamb Kabob sandwich (in pita) - - but after several bites it was obvious that I was given beef instead of lamb. My friends sampled the meat and agreed that it did not possess the distinct lamb taste, and very much tasted like beef.

I then addressed this w/ the waiter, who at first said "no, the beef and lamb are separated and you have lamb" (huh?) at which I did not appreciate his response. After realizing how he had somewhat offended me by discounting my perfectly working taste buds he then asked me what I wanted to do, at which I replied: "all I want is lamb, which is why I came here in the 1st place". His response: "that is lamb, however, if you're not happy w/ it then I will take it off the bill". I told him that this meat tasted fine and was worth the pay, but it was not what I had asked for. He said he would go back and ask the cook (what good would that do?). We tried the meat again - - and we ALL concluded that it was BEEF. The waiter came back w/o any feedback at which I asserted again to him: "the cook must have made a mistake, this is beef - not lamb". All he did was say "I'm sorry, but it is lamb, and I will take it off of the bill".

WTF? I may go back here - but never ever for lamb!

Pros: Good hummus and fattoush salad, spacious restaurant and quiet

Cons: Ask for lamb & instead you'll get beef - - and not just the sandwich, but the service too

I agree the hummus is wonderful!! I could fill up on it. The manager is soooo friendly. He makes you feel at home. They do get busy, especially before Wharton shows, but they run their hearts out to please you and make sure everything is perfect!

The food at Sultans is awesome. I highly reccomend not missing the hummus and fresh pita. The chicken shwarma is my favorite dish, but I have been known to make a meal of just the hummus, salad and pita. They also offer fresh squeezed juices and a large menu, including variety dishes.

The downside is that the service has been a little slow when it's very busy, but we have been comped half the cost of our meals once when our service was slower than usual.

PROS: great food, large menu
CONS: slow service sometimes (but not often)

Sultans is by far one of my favorite places in East Lansing. The food is always great - no matter what I order. Prices are a little high for a college town but the portions are big. Usually enough for more than 1 meal. Lentil soup a big favorite - as well as the deboned chicken.

For a little taste of the mid east - Sultans

PROS: food, service - flavor
CONS: price

This is a fantastic local Middle Eastern restaurant located in the Hannah Plaza. The food is all made fresh on site, as is the pita bread. The hummus, house salad, and lentil soup are divine! While service can be a bit slow during busy times, the entrees are worth the wait. The menu includes both meat and vegetarian items, as well as a large juice bar selection. Lamb, beef, and chicken are the specialties, as well as Kafka and Schwarma selections. Excellent food!!!

PROS: Excellent food and juice bar selection
CONS: Service slow during peak hours

This resteraunt is one of the finest arabic resteraunts in East Lansing. Service is good, the food is great, and its the only place in town that serves halal meet. It monopolies everything else in East Lansing for the Muslims observing this factor.
