I've eaten here ever since they were called East Franklin. So it is with great sadness I write this review. Cleanliness. There bath rooms are filthy and so to me the kitchen must be to. I was eating there famous fried chicken and as I brought my fork to my mouth sticking out of the skin was a fried roach. Full grown. A FULL GROWN ROACH! My favorite place to eat had roaches. I should have known if they didn't care about dirty bathrooms why should they care about clean food. I can't get it out of my mind. I will not be back

I was a patron at Southern Fires on (3/29/09) and had the WORST dining experience. Our servers name was Christian. The service was for a table of eleven guests (five of which were children) which meant that his gratuity was automatically included in the bill. When this is the case, it does not mean that the Server is allowed the opportunity to ignore customers, serve poorly and delay service. Below is a list of occurrences during my visit:

1) I asked for an extra chair and it was sat at the opposite end the table, not where I was standing;
2) One guest requested extra gravy and had to wait 25 minutes just to ask again for extra gravy;
3) I asked for an extra glass of sweet tea and was told "OK" by Christian as he proceeded to pick up a broom and dust pan to begin sweeping a station across from my table;
4) Christian then put the broom and dust pan down and walked away returning with gravy for the guest, but did not bring my tea;
5) After giving the guest her gravy, Christian then proceeded sweeping the section across from us. When asked about the tea he responded, "OK", but did not refrain from sweeping;
6) I located a Manager to express my displeasure, the Manager assured me he would bring my tea, but Christian approached my table holding the glass at rim level with his fingers touching the rim and ice in the cup, this is just after he completed sweeping the section in front of my table;
7) After waiting 30-35 minutes to pay the bill, my party walked to the front of the restaurant to locate someone to take the money only to find Christian aimlessly wondering around the kitchen and beverage area doing nothing.
The reason I visit Southern Fires once a year is because I know the service will be lacking in personal attention and graciousness. The idea that this Server was rewarded for unsatisfactory work is not only insulting for customers, but it reassures my decision not to return to your restaurant. I also intend to express my feelings to colleagues and family.

I believe in supporting small businesses and encouraging the upholding and promotion of black owned businesses in Detroit particularly in today's economy. I am also a believer in expressing my dissatisfaction with the same measure. Paying for rudeness is not tolerable and should not be standard practice. Customers offer T.I.P.S : To Insure Prompt (or Proper) Service and until Southern Fires can guarantee this level of excellence, they should reconsider the automatic gratuity until their Service is up to the standards that deserves this option.

The food is delicious. However, the atmosphere needs improvement. A disappointment to our family was that we spent $200 on a birthday celebration and was charged an extra $1.50 per person for a cake plate. We are people who dine out a lot and have "NEVER" had a restaurant to charge extras for bringing in your special cake. "RIDICULOUS." I will definitely have to give a lot of thought, if I decide to celebrate / dine at Southern Fire again. After all they are not the only good eating place. They could have accommodated for the continued business. Yes, we did mention to the Manager. My daughter who is going into Culinary Arts definitely took into consideration for her restaurant business. Satisfy your customer.

If you are looking for a place with good soul food, then this is your place. The dressing and macaroni and cheese are the best, also try the pork chops and ribs!!!

This was the worst experience in my life the service was slow, the associates were rude and three of the people in my party got sick (all 3 had the chicken fried steak). It was with a party of 23, they wouldn't let us sit together (without additional fees) cups and flat ware were dirty. Ands when I talked to the manager (young black male ) it was like talking to a teen airhead. His reply to my complaint was " what do you want me to do"? My answer was Manage this place. I have managed restaurants for 16 years so I may have a "little" knowledge about this.

Pros: valet

Cons: entire experience

I went for my birthday dinner...and service took entirely too long for a group of 6 ppl. mind you, in total there were only about 15ppl in the entire restaurant. I should have known something was wrong when the MANAGER greeted us in jeans and a t-shirt. Glasses and silverware were dirty, plus there were gnats flying around behind the bar.

Southern fires offers alot for those bored taste buds. The fried chicken, I have found to be the best. They offer greens that melt in your mouth, chessy macoroni, sweet yams and many other tasty items that will have your taste buds calling for more even though your stomach is long past full.

PROS: Excellent Food, and so many to try.
CONS: Some many people go there, so be prepared to wait at least 30 min (weekend)

This restaurtant is superb! The food is excellent. The portions are very satisfying. When you eat at Southern Fires you feel like you've eaten at your grandmother's house. I take all of my out of town guest to this restaurant. The restaurant is clean with beautiful windows that are always clean, which makes the restaurant an even more appealing place to dine.

PROS: Pros: Valet Parking
CONS: Cons: The additional self parking is not very good

I recently attended our department Christmas luncheon that had food catered by Southern Fire. I was so impressed. The food was excellent and had a great taste. I would recommend them to anyone who asks. In fact, I plan to attend the restaurant soon. Keep giving that Southern fire and we will keep coming.

The food is good and well priced and they also give you a good portion. The down fall of the place is that it is ALWAYS over crowded and the service is slow. You will wait about 20 minutes for a seat then another 20-30 minutes for your food. Its best to place an order then pick it up. I wouldnt recommend going there to sit down for dinner unless you are not in a big rush and have plenty of patients.

I would not recommend going to Southern Fire because the service is the worst. The managers don't know how to run a successful business and they definitely do not know a thing about customer service. The next Southern Fire I go to will be a cookout down in Atlanta.

Ok arriving 1st is not always good or being the last to walk thru door isn't good either. The best time to vist is in the middle of day. Being there first the food was that good.. Getting there 1/2 before closing be prepared for them not to have something.
