Yep- you have to wait. Nope they don't give a rip about your cat loving self entitled blood clot whining. Is it expensive? Only if you are a under employed Social Justice Warrior Frankly I seek out places where your type are not accommodated. RCT is one of these places. Thank God! Never ever anywhere have I had such an excellent clam Chowder. Ditto for the Ruben Sandwich. The guy who started this place named Pete Brown used to serve a Filet that was a religious experience. I have eaten here since 1976. No lie. The owners have always been brusk- with a twinkle of an eye and a wry smile. The kitchen (which I have toured several times) is as sanitary as a Hospital's ER. How do you serve food as art for 41 years? It takes an alchemy that I have never seen duplicated. Go there, dig deep in the menu and be amazed. This is not really a burger joint, although most people are well satisfied and content with them.

Too Crowded and Too Expensive. Overrated food for the price and definitely not worth the wait!

This was the worst dining experience of my life. After spending over 2 hours in this restaurant, the owner came over to our table, insulted every member of our table, offended all the women , and asked us to leave the restaurant; all because a member of our party simply asked for a "to go" cup for some wine. As I tried to explain to him that I didn't even know this had happened, the owner insisted that we were all breaking the law, would not accept any explanation, refused to listen to anyone in our party, and proceeded to try and evict us from the restaurant, publicly humiliating our entire party, and became so belligerent that I was in fear he would assault me in the middle of the restaurant! I called 911 to make sure we would be safe on the way out of the restaurant because he was so out of control. I would urge everyone to avoid this restaurant, as the owner clearly has mental issues and anger management problems.

Went for lunch there yesterday for the first time. After reading reviews was a little concerned there would be a wait (always a long wait per other reviews) however, we walked in and were seated right away. Had a Punkin Ale - awesome!

Redcoat is hands down one of the best restaurants in the area. Their burgers can't be beat, the fries and onion rings are the best I've ever had and the service is fantastic. I am so sick of all the whiny people on here complaining that the wait is long, the place is cramped, they don't cater to vegetarians/food allergies, blah, blah, blah... If you don't like it there people, then DON'T GO!!! Fine by me and the rest of the regulars...shorter wait for us to get the best food/service around!

They obviously know what they are doing, considering there is a line out the door in this crap economy, and will just keep making some good money putting out a good product and not worrying about all the whiners on this board.

This place was lovely!

Our waitress was quick and friendly, the "18th Century British" atmosphere was charming, the food was excellent, and the selection of drinks? Wow...they have so many beers (domestic and foreign) that they even gave us a "beer bible" to describe them all!

My buddy and I were so pleased with our experience that we tipped 40%.

I definitely recommend this place.

I just called the Red Coat Tavern to ask if they have veggie burgers since I am a vegetarian and the Red Coat had been recommended to me. The woman who answered the phone told me that they do not have veggie burgers although I could order rice. She was rude and unwilling to even pass on my request to the management telling me that not having veggie burgers has worked for 30 years and they were tired of people asking for them.

I have been to many other restaurants including chains like Red Robin and they bend over backwards to accommodate their customers (Boca or Gardenburger available). In fact, it's supposed to be all about service. Even Johnny Rockets offers Boca burger substitutions. The restaurants at Macy's also will bend over backwards to prepare meals for vegetarians.

Not so at the Red Coat. They are not interested in my business or the business of my friends who may eat burgers but will choose a restaurant that is customer-focused with options for me as well as them.

Two-thumbs down for the Red Coat. I have never before found a restaurant so unwilling and arrogant about not serving vegetarians something half-way decent. I felt disliked by the woman on the phone - for being willing to consider dining at the Red Coat! She even hung up on me. They must have so much business in this economy!

Burgers are delicious. Love to dip my fries in the burger sauce. I don't enjoy how crowded it always is & how there is no comfortable place to wait.

Soo good! The only place that was at the top that impressed me was a burger joint in tampa called square one burgers you can get the best nachos burgers and ahi tuna burgers there mmm to!

Here's the deal - you don't go here if you want romance or if you don't want to wait. You go when you want the greatest burger there is and you're up for the wait and the crowd. It's a fun atmosphere and the low lighting with the red tint is part of it all. They've been around for as long as I can remember the crowd is a sign of how good their food is. The burgers are the absolute best - I've never had a better one. You can order the Piedmontese beef ifor an extra $2 f you want a burger with less fat than chicken and they taste the same as the regular burgers. They have the thin crisp fries that I don't think can be beat either. The orders are big - one order is enough for two people especially since the burgers are large as well. You can oder a number of toppings for your burger. Try the zip sauce, it's awesome. My daughter and I always split a burger so we can have room for the Tenderloin Tips that are served with a cajun zip sauce and toasted pumpernickle bread. My husband always orders a side of the sauce for dipping his fries. The burgers, fries, tenderloin tips, and chili are fantastic. We haven't ordered much more, but friends have tried the Mt. Vernon sandwich and the fish and chips and loved them.

Call ahead to get your name on the list and your wait will be shorter. Order a drink at the bar and relax while you're waiting. Don't be alarmed if a bartender won't even look at you for the first few minutes you're standing there, they'll look at you when they're ready to take your order. You won't be seated until your whole party is there and the seating is crowded. You can request a both if you want more privacy. They've recently added free valet parking which I think is a bad idea, but it is what it is. It's a bit pricey for burgers, but it really is worth it all. Go with the right attitude and expectations and you shouldn't be disappointed!

I love the burgers. I hate the wait, the too close together tables, and no room anywhere at all to stand/sit and wait for a table because its always insanely overcrowded. Not to mention that if you got a table in the bar you are most likely eating your burger with someones rear end in your face. Oh and did I mention the screaming hostess who trolls through the bar endlessly calling out for people who are no longer there because they put their name on the list and then left. Why won't you please just expand? The burgers are awesome and I crave them. Last time we decided we'd do an early bird special and get there around 5:30pm on a Saturday night so there would not be a long wait. We were so wrong. There was a 75 minute wait and absolutely no where to wait for a table. So we left and ate elsewhere much to my dismay.

I was told about this restaurant by friends. I finally decided to go. The burger was good but I learned the hard way to only get a sandwich. My wife and I ordered a cheese burger and fries and I ordered a beer. The bill came to over $65.00! I ordered a beer that was in a champagne bottle and tried to return it but they would not allow me. It was understandable because it was open and it was a learning experience. The beer itself was $20. I am not blaming the restaurant but I learned quickly that you should pay attention. However, minus the beer, it is pretty expensive to pay $40 for burger and fries. I probably will not return.

I have heard such good things about this place that I thought we would try it out. Called 45 minutes ahead to put our name in and we still have to wait 20 minutes when we got there. My burger was undercooked and it was too crowded. We were so close to the people next to us that we couldn't even have a private conversation. The service was good considering how busy it was. We definitely will not be eating there again. I have had better burgers...I think this place is over rated.

What's left to say! Red Coat has to serve the biggest and best tasting burger in and around town. The only negative thing that I can say about it is that it's too popular.......always crowded. Oh, and the booth seating is too-tight. Other than that...the "Palace of Burgers."

Ok, so you may have to wait an hour to get seated but it's worth it. The burgers are awesome, along with their onion rings. Service is actually really good considering the amount of people they pack in there. Parking is a bit of a problem. They do let you call ahead and put your name on the wait list if you're on your way. They do not take formal reservations though. Carry-Out is a good way to go too. I've taken advantage of it often and have no complaints. I wish they had a separate window around back though to pick it up instead of having to go through the restaurant and weave your way around all the people. Atmosphere inside is good. It's a little cozy because they pack as many as they can get in and it can be a little loud at the peak times. One thing that baffles me is that they are not open on Sunday's. Oh well, Redcoat is a great place that has awesome burgers and I will go back again and again.

We went to the Red Coat Tavern for my son-in-laws birthday luncheon. Even though they were very busy, we were seated very quickly. Their menu is quite extensive, but not really expensive. I had a pork and ham sandwich - grilled which was so good! My husband had this huge burger, yummy. My daughters mac n cheese was very good too, almost like home made.

I would recommend this place to everyone.

GREAT burgers -- and everyone who says the red-lit atmosphere is weird needs to chill. It doesn't offend me. Whenever I go in there I crave another Red Coat burger for a month. Everything else I've tried, from the clam chowder to the blackened tilapia sandwich, tasted wonderful as well.

If you want fast food, Burger King is right next door. If you want good food, just call ahead and take 30+ minutes you'll have to wait for a table to actually TALK with your family or friends. Who knows? You might find you still have something to say to eachother after all this time.

I find myself craving their burgers all the time. The onion rings and fried mushrooms are also great. Long wait on the weekends and no reservations, but you can do call-ahead seating. It's often difficult to find parking in their tiny lot, but usually you can find a spot on one of the side streets and walk. You'll be so stuffed when you leave that you could probably use the exercise anyways.

Known for their burgers. It is very dark inside with kind of a reddish tone, but adds to the experience. You have to get a burger if you go, I asked for mine medium well, but it was so dark inside I couldn't really tell that it wasn't really cooked all the way through. We waited a while, but it's definitely something you have to try if you're from the area.

If want excellent burgers, fries, etc., Red Coat is the place to go. If for some reason you need everyone to be nice to you...well, find somewhere else to go. The place is always packed with customers and servers everywhere competiting for standing room. The hostesses are rude because they have to be, and who cares if they are. Did you really go to Red Coat to make friends? If you want five star service...try Capital Grill. The lighting is also horrible, it hangs over you with its hideous red hue and no one argues with that, but no one would dare change it either. Me, I go for the five star hamburgers, and they deliver every time.

I have been to RedCoat before, and yes the burgers are very good. However, the hostesses are extremely rude. We did the call ahead seating and did not know that all members in out party had to be present in order to be seated. 2 members out of our party of 9 were running late. They ended up giving away our table and we would have had to start all over and would have had to wait another 45 minutes. I am sure that they get stuck with empty tables a lot, but the way the situation was handled was very poor. The other 2 members were only 3 miles away and they gave away our table. I don't think I will be returning again.

This place is one of the best!!! It is dark and cozy! The bartenders are the best...Great drinks...A place to get away from the bright wide open restaurants...You have to get there early to get a spot at the bar, but it is well worth it!!!!

Pros: Dark and Cozy

Cons: Gets very busy

.

One of the best burgers you will ever have! Their cole slaw, onion rings, fish and chips, scotch eggs, and mixed drinks also deserve top honors. There is always a wait at the door, so plan accordingly. Parking is not great, but accessible and it is not a place suitable for infants.
The comment made above by talyn1978 is very odd. I also have a severe peanut allergy, but have never been concerned or had an incident with peanuts in a burger. He/she should plan and order accordingly, this is not an issue specific to this restaurant.
If you haven't been to Red Coat, you are missing out!

Pros: Food

Cons: Wait, Receptionists abrupt

Best burgers in town! There usually is a long wait, but you can call ahead and make a 'reservation'. Fries are not really that great, but onion rings.... oh my! Try it.

This is response to the person who says that Red Coat Tavern is unfriendly to babies: It's a bar you idiot. Stay home with your drooling brat. Babies don't need to be in bars

Probably the WORST customer service I have ever experienced. I have a deadly peanut allergy and must always check if a restaurant I plan at dining at uses any peanut products. I called this establishment to verify this information and was told by the hostess (or whoever answers the phone) that she has no idea what they use and that she will not be checking for me because they are busy. Um? hello? I then asked to speak to the manager and she spoke for them in saying the same thing over again. She suggested I just ask the waitress after I?m seated. I explained that my party will not be going there if I cannot eat there and she again just said she cannot check for me and that I will have to ask when I get there. That is just completely ridiculous? A peanut allergy is not something new in this day and age and it is extremely sad that this establishment allows for such rude employees who ultimately just end up turning away business.

This is an older restaurant with a very dark interior and dark furniture. The staff are friendly. The food is okay, if a bit expensive. It is a good place to eat.

Although Red Coat has a good burger, there is a new kid on the block. Mr. Brewstirs and folks say they have the best burger in Michigan. Everyone can check out a Mr. Brewstir's burger on Saturday May 26 2007 they are having another free hamburger day. So look out Red Coat there a new kid on the block. Google Mr. Brewstirs for details.

So this was our first time to the Red Coat Tavern so we had high expectations since we've heard nothing but good things! HOWEVER, we had a crappy experience....
Ok, so it started out that I had ordered a diet soda and it came flat....waitress replaced it, but it was flat again....
next came our burgers which were excellent! however, they forgot the pickle on my husbands dish, we ordered onion rings and they were ICE COLD.....waitress did take them back but since they were so busy, we didn't get them until after we were finished eating our burgers (altho I must say they were really good the 2nd time)...so our bill comes to $21.14 and I gave the waitress $40.25.....I got back $13.85....so they shorted me $5.00 plus change.... and when I told her right away we got a dirty look like I was lying....

I think it will be a while before we go again....we might go earlier in the day on a weekend when it is not so busy and we can receive a little bit better service/food.

Seriously, the best hamburgers anywhere . . . ever. Expect to wait for 15 to 20 on most days. The service isn't great, the decor is from the 70's, but the food more than makes up for it. I have family that drive in from Lansing when they want a burger, because, this place is simply that good.

I was quite excited to see Red Coat made number one, I read this post with great interest, my dad and his best friend loved the Red Coat Tavern ... they used to fight about which one of them "discovered" it; but that was in the day when it wasn't quite as grungy and the cook knew exactly how to cook to order.

The best was ireading from a few folks about the burnt onions .... because no one knows how to burn them like the Red Coat, in fact when I ask for them burnt anywhere near Chicago & burbs, they just can't seem to burn onions like at the Red Coat. In fact they are so good, that my daughter now asks for her onions burnt.

By the way my dad was the one that first asked for the burnt onions!!!!!!!

Eating at the Red Coat Tavern is something you MUST experience at least once! They have the most fantastic burgers I've ever eaten & now CRAVE when it's been a while! They have a few other MUST TRY items: onion rings (serriously - the best!), French Onion Soup, Cobb Salad, Reuban (with Slaw is how I've gotten it)! The place is small, run-down, dingy, but almost ALWAYS packed! No matter what time of the day it is, there's always a full house, so prepare to wait for a table - it's well worth it! Waitstaff is friendly, bartenders serve good (but stiff) drinks and there's a "hussle" about the atmosphere that gives it an authentic pub feel. Quite noisy, but a fun time.

I loved the food, I was very pleased with the staff, but I was very unhappy with how unfriendly the facility was for people with babies. There was no baby changing station in the bathroom, and they had nothing to hold a baby carrier. No sling, not even a wooden highchair that could be turned upside down to hold the baby carrier. All they had was a WAY too big highchair that clipped to the table. If you like great burgers and friendly staff I highly recommend this place but if you have a small child don't go here unless you want to change your poopy diapers in the car.

I'm fortunate to live a mile and a half from this little dump. Easy to mistake for a Sign-of-the-beefcarver from the outside, this place is crowded, smoky in the bar, dark, and uninviting at first glance. It also always has no less than a 30 minute wait for a table (even at really odd hours). This is for good reason - their food is delicious. Their burgers are simply the best on the planet, perfectly prepared, with pretty much any topping you like. Their fries are similarly delicious. Ditto the fish-and-chips. Frankly, I've yet to have anything less than a fully satisfying meal there. Their beer list is also very good and the tap selection is extensive.

I thought I knew what a good burger was until I went to Red Coat. The Piedmontese beef if amazing: I read that it actually has less fat than salmon (but I'll have to do more research to see if it's true). The beef was cooked just like I ordered and it came quickly. My colleague ordered the Tavern Salad. I think it had chicken and a poached pear on it, and she said it was wonderful. They also had some interesting menu items as well, but it would be hard to go there again and not have the burger.

My only criticism is that it's crowded. The red lighting is a little odd, too. If you want a quiet, romantic date, Red Coat Tavern is NOT the place. It's very loud, especially over by the bar. But if you are craving a fantastic burger, it's the place to go!

I would be lying if I said the burgers were not excellent, however, that is not enough to keep me coming back. Every couple months, a group of collegues and I get together for dinner, and Red Coat is most often the choice. We end up waiting anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours for tables, because they will only seat us (group of 6-8) once 2 tables right next to each other, happen to be available at the same time. In the meantime, you end up crammed up against a wall, the bar, or strangers while waiting hours to be seated. May be fine for a party of two, but DO NOT attempt to eat here with friends.

This place is an institution to die for. It is another place like Carls Chophouse that is frozen in time. Get the house burger (you have a choice of regular or Piedmontese ground beef, I get the latter for the reduced fat aspect without sacrificing flavor) The options for burger toppings are vast. I opt for the burnt onions and smoked gouda cheese. This place gets very very crowded. They have a nice bar with excellent beer choices but it is also very crowded and smoky. Other choices on the menu are also well done, but you came for the burger and it should not be passed up!

I used to work at Redcoat some years ago . I still have not tasted a better burger . The other food is very tasty to . I`ve been to some very expensive eating places but Redcoat still has the best tasting food . If I had one complaint servers , when I order my food a certain way thats how I want it . Onion rings thin batter extra crispy ex ex ex . Don`t just throw my order in tell the cook . When I worked there , that is something the late pete or some called him John , would not stand for ignored food orders . All in all a fantastic place for food and drink .

Exceptional burger! Too bad it is so far from the house! Very juicy and cooked to order (medium rare please), this burger is the best out there. The onion rings can't be beat. Pricy, as cinred43 commented, but far from overated and ordinary. It is well worth the cost. Better get their early for lunch or dinner as it fills up quickly!

what an expensive, overated, and ordinary burger. and the same goes for the bar itself
what they charge for a burger they should feed it to you by hand. The Redcoat Tavern is a perfect name for the place. It makes you pay a "tax" for the condiments. You know, 50 cents tax for an slice of onion or cheese, etc.

This place is proof we've forgiven the British for that Revolutionary War thing. A mannequin dressed in the renowned redcoat uniform stands behind glass near the main entrance, and the menu has a dish named The Cornwallis. A big stone…
