The DIA has recently been renovated and it is beautiful. I can't even put into words, you just have to go see for yourself. There is also a Film Theater that has amazing art films! First Class!!

This is a wonderful place to enjoy many interesting exhibits. Check ahead of time for hours of operation. I have been there many time to view exhibits or to take part in programs going on at the museum. During the summer, they have a jazz series that is very good. They also have very good art workshops for children.

I could spend days getting lost at the Detroit Institute of Arts. They house the art of many world renowned artists. Each room basically contains the work of an era, from Renaissance and impressionist to cubism to modern art.

They only ask for a small donation to enter. They have a gift shop with unique things and a cafe for a quick lunch or snack.

I highly recommend a visit to this museum.

This is the best place for some culture in Detroit, if not in the whole state of Michigan. Whether you want to drop by with your family or take a field trip, there's something for everyone, no matter what your tastes in art. It's just a high-class operation all around.

This place is wonderful for the family. While not as large as a place like the Met in New York, the art is varied and extensive. There are often special cultural events, eg. Japanese art, complete with performers from Japan, and activities. Currently there is a special collection of sculptures from Claudel and Rodin.

The Detroit Institute of Arts, located in downtown Detroit, is a really nice art museum. I remember many field trips to the DIA while in elementary school and it was always a magical place for me. They have an extensive collection of art the spans a large period of time form modern art back to Egyptian art. The galleries are good sized and have places where you can sit and take a break. The Diego Riviera mural is amazing and really a neat thing to experience. If you haven't been to the DIA in a while, it's probably time to pay it another visit.

This museum is a gem in the heart of the city, but it really needs better marketing to get more crowds in the door. Many times that I have gone there, it has been pretty empty, and their hours have been cut back to strange times. It is a wonderful place to see all of the world class exhibits, but it needs better advertising. Friday nights it is pretty lively with their family concert series, so they are starting to bring in people, but they need them for the rest of the week as well. It is very clean and easy to get around in the museum, and has one of the best Greek collections of sculpture on the country, better than Chicago. There is a parking structure close by, and it is well lit.

This is my favorite museum in the Detroit area. They have great themed shows for throughout the year. They have every Friday night music and food where you can relax and enjoy a relaxing evening with friends and family. Very reasonable fees considering the quality of art available. Great for everyone!!!

PROS: great artwork, variety of programs, reasonable prices
CONS:

I've been very impressed with this museum/institute every time I've had the chance to visit. I enjoy the visiting exhibits as well as the "home" exhibits.

The most recent visit was for the Van Gogh exhibit. It was very thorough and I found it to be very educational as well.

Parking is a bit difficult, but can be found for a reasonable price. Wheelchair access is no problem; my grandmother was in a wheelchair while we were there for the Van Gogh exhibit and she and my aunt were accomodated by the staff without complaint or trouble.

OK...so it is like a museum, but don't worry...IT IS FUN! Anyone can walk in and find something they are interested in...I promise! They have ALL kinds of art, paintings, sculptures, you name it they have it on display. They have "antique" things, modern things, and everything in between. So grab your friends (I would not bring too young children), and head out there for a fun, interesting, educational day!

The Detroit Institute of Arts is a great place to go if you enjoy nice pieces of art. They offer paintings, graphic arts, antiques, furniture, sculptures - you name it, they got it. They also offer a nice gift shop, full of many different things. The building has a lot of remodeling going on, so I'm sure it's going to look really good when it's done. They offer programs with music on Friday evenings, it's really enjoyable, you should go check it out. Parking is conveinent and there are lots of restaurants to chose from close by.

I recommend the Detroit Institute of Art Museum. It is a great place to expose children to art or a great place to bring a date. You can walk around and talk about what you see- it instantly adds interesting conversation to your date. They offer paintings, graphic art, antiques, furniture, sculpture, you name it. Everyone will find something they are interested in. This is a great place for a field trip or outing for scouts or clubs. Also they offer a nice gift shop. Remodeling is going on right now so it should look really nice when they're done. Friday evenings they offer free programs with music, etc. A great trip for a rainy or hot day! Convenient parking and restaurants are nearby too!

The best part of the Detroit Institute of Arts has to be their well-advertised traveling exhibits. A couple years ago we were privileged to see the works of Degas and his amazing paintings and sculptures of ballerines. The exhibit was expertly managed and planned for someone like me who appreciates art but does not know much about it. The rest of the museum is interesting as well. Be sure to check out the gallery with the modern art as well as the Egyptian artifacts. The museum also keeps large pieces of art on display on the grounds.

The reason I give the DIA a four star rating is the difficult parking situation. In a city that has snow at least four months of the year and carries a high crime rate, it would be nice to have parking closer to the building.

PROS: great special exhibits
CONS: parking situation less than optimal

If you go to the DIA there is one thing you must visit for me: The Diego Rivera mural. It is the epitome of classic American art and storytelling. The mural encompasses a south and a north wall and is officially called "Detroit Industry" (1932-33). You can't come to Motown without seeing this fantastic fresco. There is a depiction of the auto industry, which to this day is the heart and soul of the city, and Rivera nails it. Edsel B. Ford commissioned the installment and got more than he could have ever bargained for. There is even a homage to all of God's people with a dedication to the black, white, brown and yellow humans of the world who make this a wonderful planet to live on. You could spend hours examining and worshiping this amazing piece of work.

PROS: Diego Rivera's "Detroit Industry"
CONS: nada

Whenever we visit the DIA, we see something that makes the trip worthwhile. The special exhibits and shows that come from time to time have been excellent and great for our kids too.

The DIA is a great place for anybody that likes to see lots of wonderful fine art of all different time periods and cultures, as you go through the galleries it's like walking through time. It also has a resturant on the first floor, a nice place to get a bite to eat either before a long day of enjoying the all the wonderful things to see - or after. I have even gone there by myself just to relaxe and get away. If you have never been to the DIA I recommend that you go-I believe you'll like it. Also, there is no charge but I pay something every time I go anyway, I would hate to see it closed like it was several years ago.

I visit art museums in different cities every chance I get and more often than not I walk away thinking "the DIA is much better than that". This museum is easily one of the top 10 art museums in the US (I would put it in the top 5) and is second only to the truly elite art museums of the world.

Detroit is more likely to be characterized as a car and rock'n roll town, and there is nothing wrong with this perception. However, there is a thriving art scene which goes largely unnoticed. But an underground art scene does not make a great city, it is often times judged on the quality of its public art museums. The DIA will not disappoint the art enthusiast or the family looking for an enjoyable day in the city. Top notch!

This is a good place to go to spend some time on the weekend, alone, with friends or with family. There is always something new to see, and always something that is permanently there to appreciate over and over. The food court is a nice place to take a rest, although the prices are a bit high.
