Fresh, creative cuisine.

When Stella's first opened in the old state hospital building, I was skeptical at best. Who wanted to eat in some dingy old building that used to house the insane? On the other hand, however, I was pleased that the building and its architecture would be preserved and put to good use. So we made a reservation. They were not very timely, and we had to wait. Luckily, though, there is a lovely art gallery in the building that is a perfect spot to sightsee as you wait. The atmosphere itself is very intimate and dark, very romantic. The food is a sort of gourmet Americana with a tinge of Italian influence, with very fresh local ingredients and a menu that changes daily. The portions are small. THey ran out of the main course I had ordered, but made up for it with a free desert. The food is well prepared, and "fancy." It's great, for the area, but does not really stand out in comparison with other big-city restaurant dining.

PROS: Atmosphere
CONS: Small portions, expensive
