I attended St. John's regularly in college and still go there on occasion when their schedule meets my needs better than my regular parish's does.

There are many things to love about St. John's: The priest is a great homilist and confessor. The people are friendly, and it's so refreshing to see so many young people coming to Mass. There are also numerous Masses and many opportunities for confession. (In fact, I think it may be the only parish in town to offer confession on a day other than Saturday.)

However, the weirdly gender-free revisions of the hymnal and even the Creed are bizarre, and I'm not convinced that they're liturgically correct. In addition -- and this isn't really the parish's fault -- some of the outfits I see students, especially the young women, wearing to Mass are absolutely shocking. (I sound like an old geezer, and I'm really not! I'm a fairly young woman who's just taken aback when I see someone going up for Communion in Daisy Dukes.)

While I love the church I grew up in, nothing could compare to the experiences I had while attending St. Johns Student Parish while I was a student at Michigan State University. The priests are friendly and accessible and the parish is made up mainly of students, but with a devoted local resident core. There are numerous opportunities for fellowship and stewardship. But the best part of any mass is the music, as the predominantly student choirs bring the service to life.
