I'd been looking for a book to go in my Emily Dickinson collection for . . . oh . . . about twenty years. I walked in to Dog Ears Books and there it was, sitting on the shelf. From the infamous Red Chair where you must go to think, to the puppy who greets you, to wonderful Pamela, the store owner--who loves books the way so few people love books, this place is an amazement. You must browse the shop for books, then view David Grath's exceptional paintings. The place is a complete experience

Dog Ears is one of the most wonderful bookstores you'll ever find. The atmosphere is evocative of a treasured library lifted from a librarian's farm house. Along with the eclectic selection of books, you'll be treated to the company of proprietor, Pamela Grath. Pamela is one of the most gracious, intelligent, well-read people I've ever met, quick to recommend books on any variety of topics, and in many time periods and genres. If she doesn't have it, she can get it for you. And if you want to know what that first edition Hemingway that you found at a garage sale is worth, she can ferret out that information, too. Trust me, I know. She did it for me! Pamela is a fount of information.
When you're done looking at the unique selection of rare and antique books, you can visit the Painted Horse Gallery, shared space which features beautiful works of art by the noted local and national artists. Warning: allocate a good amount of time, because it's a hard place to leave.

Dog Ears Books is the dream bookstore for all readers, from beach-reading dunebugs to the avid collector of classic and signed editions. It is rare to find an independent bookstore that stocks so many titles with such precision. Nestled in the small town of Northport, which itself is nestled among the sand dunes and cherry orchards on the edge of Lake Michigan, the store is both quaint and modern, comfortable and well-stocked, and the proprietor, Pamela Grath, always welcoming and erudite. Dog Ears Books is that rare and delightful find, one you will surely revisit.
