I loved coming here when I was a kid, and I still love it! The store has a basement, which serves as the toy section, and for being a small store, it has some cool stuff. Children are required to have a parent with them when they go to the toy section. What I especially love is the candy. They have harder-to-find cheap candy here, the ten and fifteen cents stuff, such as fizz pops and pixie sticks. Yum! Also worth a peek is what I call the trinket aisle. Loose balloons and pencils, rabbits feet, etc. are sold for little, and you come away with a treasure! (Or, at least, I viewed them as treasures when I was a kid. I still have my special pink rabbits foot!) The service is good, with friendly employees.

When I think of variety stores, I think of Suburban Five & Ten. They have almost everything. My favorite part of the store is the aisle where there are a ton of little trinkets that are ideal for giftbags for parties. I also bought a calendar there six months ago for $5. They have a basement with childrens toys. Yarn, photo frames, game boards, stuffed animals, suncatchers you name it & they have it. If you were looking for a specific game, I would call ahead & be sure they had it before you visited though.

When I was a young girl, a trip to the Ben Franklin drugstore was a treat. It was the type of place that would always have "something" unique that I could not live without.

Sadly, the chain has all but disappeared from W. Michigan, but 5-and-10, another childhood staple, is still alive and well.

The chain boasts a supply of toys, beauty aids, and tools for those who may need an item quickly and don't wish to run out to a chain store. However, 5-and-10 also is a surprising resource for yarn! They carry most of the same brands of yarn (Lion Brand, TLC, Red Heart) that Michael's carries, but for a much more reasonable price. They almost always have items I need in stock.

One downfall- upon last visit, the chain currently does not accept credit cards.

They are open Monday-Saturday.

PROS: great selection of yarn, good prices, lots of candy :)
CONS: not open on sundays, don't take credit cards
