This office was not able to help get our dog's allergies under control. They did nothing for us that we couldn't have learned about online by doing our own research. I don't blame the employees, animal allergies control is apparently not an exact science. However,it seemed like they were more interested in selling us over-priced supplements than they were in helping our dog. I would recommend seeing a different office if you have a dog with allergies and you want the best chance of making your animal more comfortable. I dont want in any way to bash the employees at this office because I don't really know them personally. This review is meant only to inform those who may read it, that this office did not work for us.

They sold us cat food that was recalled and did not inform us. Dr Fred even tried to argue that the food we purchased from Hamilton Vet was not recalled; however, when we called IAMS they confirmed it was one of the recalled bags. Dr Fred was so arrogant that he would not even apologize for his actions.
Bottom line we trusted Hamilton Vet to provide us with a prescription diet and this almost killed our pets. Our cats suffered through a summer of vomiting and even shaking and we assumed it was old age. Would you want your pet to be examined by this monster?

Our first visit to the Hamilton Veterinary Clinic was fairly innocuous since it was just to get our new puppy??s second shots. The staff members were generally polite and helpful for such a short visit. They said the puppy was in good health and to just bring him back for his next shots and neutering in a couple of weeks.

Our next visit was pretty much a polar opposite experience. Three days after the first visit, I noticed Merlin drooling a bit and then noticed that he had diarrhea when I took him for a walk. I immediately called the clinic and they said they wanted to see him again that afternoon since they had seen a number of cases of Parvo recently. I took him in that afternoon and they ran a Parvo test that came back with negative results. Dr. Chmielewski then was feeling around in his abdomen and said that he felt a large lump that was either a tumor or some sort of blockage. He said that we would need to have Barium, x-rays, and operate immediately if we wanted to save him. I asked how much everything would cost and was told to plan on spending twenty-five hundred to three thousand dollars. In tears, I called my husband to see what to do and then explained to the vet that we just couldn??t spend that amount. At this point they basically treated me like a waste of their time because I couldn??t afford that kind of bill. They told me he would continue to suffer until I had him put down, but they gave him a shot of Ampicillin and an anti-nausea drug and said we could hope for the best. My four year old daughter and I walked out emotionally devastated with Merlin.

My husband decided to take the rest of the afternoon off work since I was so upset and we decided to take Merlin to the Allegan Animal Clinic for a second opinion. When we arrived, we told them what had happened at the Hamilton Clinic and the diagnosis. The vet said that the negative test result for Parvo didn??t necessarily rule that out and that it may have just been too early. They examined Merlin and felt around for the ??large? tumor/obstruction. The vet said he did notice a little irregularity but didn??t think it was anything of great significance and said that it was definitely too early to be pursuing such an aggressive course of action like surgery. He said he wanted to isolate Merlin and treat him for the Parvo since the treatment would be similar for any other form of infection or gut rot. He said that he would continue to watch the abdominal anomaly and let us know if we needed to consider x-rays.

The next afternoon, the vet called my husband to say that they were ready to send Merlin home. He said he was up running around, barking, chasing his tale and just being a puppy. He said that he had been eating and drinking and had had two satisfactory bowel movements. He said there was no indication of any lumps in the abdomen and that he still tested negative for Parvo as well. He thinks he may have just eaten something that disagreed with him as puppies are apt to do. Even with the increased cost because he was in isolation, we walked out with a bill for just over 125 dollars and a puppy that has been doing fine ever since (a far cry from $3000 and a puppy that had undergone major surgery for an upset stomach).

Based on the extreme mis-diagnosis and even more so the way I was treated when I said that I couldn??t afford the multi-thousand dollar treatment, I will never take another pet to the Hamilton Veterinary Clinic. I will, however, be recommending the Allegan Animal Clinic to everyone I know.

I'm extremely skeptical of "Anonymous' " review below. I'm guessing there's a lot more of the story that would expose the writer's ineptitude. I drive from Grand Rapids to have my cats' work done there and have been with them since 2003. Their professionalism and convenient scheduling have been very helpful to me. None of my cats have enjoyed the vets but the staff made them very comfortable for the situation they were in. I've recommended them to several friends who were just as pleased as I with their service. It's absolutely worth the drive and my pets receive exceptional care. Stephanie B and Minuet

We have moved 3 times in the last 14 years. Because of that we have several different Vets. This office is by far the best we have had. They have worked us in every time we needed to come in. We had an emergency over the weekend and the Dr. met us 1 time on Saturday afternoon and again the next day as well. The Vet techs and the Dr were kind, compassionate and understanding. They did everything to help our dog be as comfortable as possible. Its hard for me to believe the other post about them "hitting" an animal. They are consistently helpful and kind. We were referred to them through a friend who is a breeder. She takes here puppies as well as the parent dogs there. We are so appreciative of this office. The are by far the most reasonable price around. We went to one Dr. that charged us $40.00 to walk in the door, they charge us $20. That is a huge savings! Not to mention their beside manor was wonderful!

I have been to other vets, but I prefer Hamilton above the others. We were treated wonderfully, the place was clean and they have a healthy respect for our pets without expecting us to treat them as superior to our children. They are very professional and explain procedures thoroughly.

My pet almost died after going here because the vet didn't know what she was doing. My nieces pet died because they wouldn't fit her in after he ate rat poison. Also her cat almost died because the vet didn't know what to do. Take my word, they might be the cheapest vet around BUT you get what you pay for. If you love your pet, don't go here! One of the vets actually physically hit my pets. There are too many other vets to go to.

My dog - a huge basset hound, used to love going to the vet to see his friends. They always showed him off to all the other people there. He loved all the attention and they were always sure to give him a treat. My cat on the other hand, hates the place - as cats usually do. But, I think it's because they told me to put him on a diet. The doctors and the nuses, as well as the staff here are all so polite and friendly.
