My 6 year old had been bugging me to let him take karate classes. One of his friends's mothers told me about this martial art academy. Her son had been taking lessons here for almost 2 years, and he loved it, and she highly recommended it.
Before we signed up, the owner had me bring my son in to watch a class. Then he spent a half hour or so with my son, trying some general instruction on stance, breathing, movement and so on, while he evaluated whether my son was ready to start training. He said there were several things he looked at, whether the child could understand the instructions, follow directions, coordination level, and so on. He felt my son should begin with a 6 week program to try it out, and decide from there.
When you sign up, you can attend unlimited number of sessions for the sign up period. He recommended twice a week.
One thing I like about this program is the emphasis on the philosophy and non-violent aspects. They also have a program called Storm Team where more advanced students are selected to act as role models for new students. It has been very good for my son and his friend.
PROS: Non-Violent, good atttitude
CONS: Hours aren't the best for me to take my son
