Bought a fresh Spartan turkey for Thanksgiving. Of the many turkey's that I've cooked in the past 40 years, this one happened to be just plain tough. After a few days, I went back to Tom's store and happened to see Tom working in the Customer Service area. I mentioned to him that the Turkey I purchased from his store was not as good as I had in the past. Only comment was that his Wife didn't have any trouble with hers and it was very tender. Never said I'm so sorry and I'll make it up to you somehow.
You are right. No people skills here. Back to Meijers for satisfaction.

Tom... where to begin. I have lived in Portland all my adult life and have had several less than stellar shopping experiences at Tom's food center.
To be fair, his sale prices are excellent and in keeping with most other Spartan Stores. However, you WILL be gouged price-wise by most other items, especially items such as coffee, candy, cheeses, etc. As far as Health and beauty aids and medicine, whew, he's even higher priced than Rite Aid.
What really gets me is Tom's lack of people skills. Buddy, you're in a small town where people have easy access to other shopping centers. After all, in just 15 minutes, we can be at the Grand Ledge Meijer store, so, at least ACT like you are grateful to have us in the store. SMILE, say hello, or better yet, interact with the townsfolk that pay your nice fat salary.
AND, while I'm at it, get some more cashiers!!! At any given time, there is a line 4-5 people deep and two cashiers. Oh, but Tom DID put in those pain in the arse scan your own groceries machines now didn't he? Could that be because he doesn't have to pay their salary OR even talk to them?? There ya go Tom, just make the whole store automated and you'll do just fine.

Get some manners and look grateful!

HELLO

I live in Pewamo so I can do my food shopping in several towns including Carson City, St Johns, Muir, Ionia and Portland. I prefer coming to your store in Portland "Toms" until today 10-31-06! I went in to buy a few items including bread, I was buying Aunt Millies Seeded Italian the sign says Aunt Millies Homestyle bread BUY ONE GET ONE FREE. I just wanted to double check and make sure the Seeded Italian was on sale so I ask an employee working in the aisle, he said yes its on sale we don't sell much of the Seeded Italian so that's why we did not put any on the table, I thanked him. I then picked up 2 Seeded Italian breads and continued shopping. When I got to the check out the cashier rang up the bread and they were not on sale so she called Tom over and he looked in the paper and the paper said what bread was on sale and the Seeded Italian was NOT on sale. I could not believe the owner Tom was not willing to make this right for me in some way he just refused to sell me the bread for the sale price even though his signs in the aisle and his employee was wrong! I drive out of my way to shop at Tom's because I prefer it to the other stores around me, but I will not be a shopper of Tom's any longer since the owner is not willing to stand buy his signing and or his employee's or what they tell his customers! I can shop at many big name store's "Walmart, Krogers, Meijers" that are closer to me and may be cheaper than Toms but I have always shopped at Tom's until now. I'm sure Tom will receive this email and maybe he will think of the business he is loosing with such a bad attitude and poor customer service.

Your Ex customer, DAN ADAMS

PROS: Very good quality food and fair prices.
CONS: very poor customer service.

Tom's is great to get that occasional grocery item, but their prices are a little high to do all your grocery shopping if you are shopping for a family. Their sale prices are very competitive, but their regular prices tend to be at least 10%-20% higher than Meijer or WalMart.

They do have a lot of sevices including instore franchises of Beaners (coffee) and Little Caesar's (pizza). The $4.99 lunch buffet with Little Caesar's pizza and Tom's salad bar is a great deal.

PROS: Many extras for a grocery store
CONS: higer prices
