Feed Rite Is okay in the fact that they have some good accessories. Other than that I feel bad for the animals that live there. The fish live in some really nasty water, they over crowd the small animal cages and the bird cages look like they haven't been cleaned in ages! Employee wise, the older man that works there is so friendly and nice. The older woman never smiles, never asks if you need help, always has a face like she just pooped and doesn't look happy that your there.

This store's animals look half-dead. A cage with 3 parakeets will have water so nasty it looks as though it hasn't been changed in days, which is absurd. These animals are so few in number that there is no reason the staff can't better care for them.

Don't even get me started on their fish. Their bettas especially are in poor condition...they must get it from a cheap breeder. I understand that they cannot compete with big chains, but maybe then that means it's time to close up. My betta lived for a few weeks, and I am an experienced owner.

Not an ideal place to get pets, in my opinion...they're unhealthy. Go to PetCo in Fairlane Green on Outer Drive, or go to PetSmart at Pardee and Eureka by Southland Mall. Better-cared for animals.

Toys and accessories are fine, but not good enough.

I have paid more than $50 in this store and the staff said not a word to me. In fact, when I have asked for help, I have been treated as though I was wasting their time - even when I was in and out of the store in less than a minute.

I am a 'shop local' type of person, but this store is falling short. Go to the big guys.

And forget the pet store on Dix - I went there and they have no animals anymore. They must be closing up shop, which is sad - they were a great store with animals who appeared well-cared for.

Pros: Lots of accessory and food variety

Cons: Clerks are rude and pets look dead

I cannot count the times over the last 15 years that they have not had my dogs brand of dog food in stock. This has cause me to buy a small 5lb bag, This has happened at very inconvenient times. Some of the workers just know the cash register and not the producsts, and they can be kind of rude. The owner is a good guy, but I question some of the others in the store.

Until I adopted my cat, I had never heard of Feed Rite. I actually found them online because I decided to purchase higher quality cat food than what you would find at the grocery store, and the food I was recommended had them listed as a retailer. It turned out a friend from work knew someone who worked there and she said it was a good store and to try them out. I was pleasantly surprised. They carry a LOT of different products, from your grocery store cat chow and puppy chow to your higher end products that you would normally find at pet stores. (not to mention your products for fish, birds, etc) Their prices on grocery store brands seemed kind of high, but all the more expensive foods I buy seem to be very reasonably priced. Customer service is hit and miss... The first time I went in, a very nice stock boy helped me select my cat food and actually saved me money. He pointed out that the brand I had planned on buying had the same benefits as a less expensive brand they had which I thought was very helpful -- it's hard to find customer service like that these days. However, the female cashier I see in there most times seems rather b!tchy and not as friendly, and she smokes inside the store while sitting at the front counter. Nevertheless, their wide selection, reasonable pricing and helpfulness of other employees will keep me coming back!

** EDIT ** I have decided to edit this review after several years. I have grown dissatisfied with this store and their customer service. I had ignored the lack of customer service in the past because they offered the cat food I desired at a reasonable price, but even that is no longer true. Three years ago I started buying Professional brand cat food for $8.99/6 lb bag. That exact item now costs $12.99. A price increase of $4 in three years is obviously ridiculous! Inflation is not that drastic. Two months ago, I switched to a cheaper brand so I could continue paying the $8.99 I was accustomed to. Well, I just bought my next bag of cat food and it is now $9.99!! These prices are now becoming very similar to what you would find at a big pet store like Petco/PetSmart, and I always found them extremely overpriced.

Now that Feed Rite has raised their prices to levels very close to their competitors, why would I shop at an establishment that is dirty and has some of the worst customer service? I would rather go to Petco or Petsmart, pay a little extra and enjoy clean floors, no cigarettes and friendly employees. This place is on the way down the drain and they have no one to blame but themselves.

NOT RECOMMENDED!

This wasn't my regular pet food store but I stopped in once to compare prices and ended up purchasing some liver biscuits for my dog. I hadn't seen them carried in other stores and since my dog loved them, I returned every so often to pick more of them up. The staff I encountered were all very friendly and helpful. At the time, I was considering getting a bird and they walked me over to the section and explained some of the things I would need if I did indeed get one. They had a wide selection of food products and accessories to choose from.

I stopped in to this store right after I got my puppy because it was close to my home. As soon as I walked in a young man came to help me pick out all of the things I needed to care for my puppy. They even carry out big bags of food for you.
