Sixth Chamber Used Books

A rare find, with personality and class

I disagree with Anonymous. Go to the large chain Borders or Barnes and Noble bookstores for fashion magazines and the largest selection of best sellers. That's not what this charming, personable, one-of-a-kind neighborhood gem is about. Well-organized and excellent quality used books, a much larger online inventory, friendly employees, and a cozy children's nook make this my favorite used book store in St. Paul. It's not as inexpensive as the "clearance" section of Half-Price Books, but I prefer the ambiance. Visit sixthchamber.com and place a variety of interesting books on the on-hold "bookshelf" a day or two before visiting in person for the largest selection to consider. Look around a bit more and take your pile of books to a chair as you explore them to make your final selections. If your own used books are in great condition, Sixth Chamber will give you twice as much in credit as in cash...MUCH better than most other used bookstores.

paltry selection of books

This is not a terrible bookstore if you're on the run and want to pick up a bestseller or fashion magazine, but if you're looking for good selection, it's worth the hike to border's in the nearby avenue. The selection here is pretty paltry, but in a pinch you could do worse.

Excellent selection, with clearly defined sections. They get new inventory on a regular basis, and have many excellent reads. The prices aren't as cheap as some used bookstores, but the quality of the books are most often higher. They maintain an excellent database of their inventory for easy access , and have helpful staff.

I always like browsing in this store. They are well organized, maintain a computer database of their inventory, and only accept books in pristine condition. Sections are based on general topics - Religion, Cooking, Mystery, etc.
It is smack in the middle of several colleges & in a fairly upscale area, so the selection tends toward intellectual tastes (don't expect any Harlequins).
PROS: walk-in sellers welcome!
CONS: not super cheap
