My two sons aged 12 and 13 have been fencing at the MN Sword Club for 2 years. We think it is wonderful! The instructors are great with energetic kids. The kids are taught skills but also the ethics and respect of the sport. Since it is a sport you have to go out of your way to find, the coaches and students really want to be there. The facility is older, but the main thing is that there is a large area of good wooden floor space for bouting. You pay one fee for 3 months and can attend up to four classes during the week for that same price. The more you go, the better you get and the better value it is. It's FUN! My sons want to go! They have both written about their coaches when they have been given school assignments to write about role models. You can watch the class or go have coffee at Turtle Bread Company next door. The Sword Club does have facilities for you to hook up your computer to use while you wait, tables to use for other games, reading, writing, whatever. Fencing is a good fitness workout, as well as developing hand/eye coordination.

I've actually only been in the sword club once. It's an old bowling alley which they've put a gym floor on top of the old lanes to allow people to fence. It's a great space for fencing, and I think would accomodate anywhere from 6-10 sparring matches at a time. There was a little area to watch from one end of the place too. It'd be nice if they could fix it up a little, but understandably, it's a non-profit, and they don't have the resources.
