I have been a customer of Ichiban for 10 years, visiting a few times a year. My husband and I have typically each always ordered the same meal- the most expensive thing on the menu, the Superior- and have always ordered the fried rice

My initial impression when I walked in was good, but it then it went down hill after that. There were 10 in my party and there was a table that was just the right size...so that was good. After this point it went down hill. The waitress

My wife and I were in the sushi bar for the All-You-Can-Eat Special, again, last night and the chefs made up a whole plate of made to order sushi and rolls. They seem to be experimenting with some new sauces that were delicious and we were happy to be able to experiment. Teng and Tony were both very friendly and seemed extremely knowledgable about sushi. The head chef Lam Ha came out from the kitchen and he explained to us that the secret to really good sushi is the rice. He said that all Minnesota sushi has to be frozen by order of the health department so the fish shouldn't very much. We love watching the little boats go round and the sushi has always been fantastic. Lots of variety.

My bf and I use to go to Ichiban to eat their sushi buffet all the time. Before the food was great. Now the sushi sucks and it's not even fresh. You can tell cause when you eat it, it's warm. All their good chefs left and they just have anyone making sushi. My boyfriend ask the guy to make a Dragon Roll for him and he ask my boyfriend what goes in a Dragon roll. I was thinking to myself that you're the chef and you don't know how to make a dragon roll and your asking the customer how to make it. WHAT KIND OF CRAP IS THAT!! My bf said he went a while ago with his friend and he ate one of the sushi that wasn't clean complete and still had dirt in it. He was telling me he felt like he was going to die. I told him, if I was there I would have refuse to pay for that meal. We went back later and the chef was like you're the one that had the bad sushi last time right? He was like yeah and the chef didn't even apologize or anything. TERRIBLE PLACE...IF YOU WANT TO EAT SOMETHING CRAPPY GO AHEAD, BUT IF YOU WANT SOME GOOD QUALITY I RECOMMEND NOT GOING TO THIS PLACE.

I have been to itchiban on several occasions. I really love the lighting and the chefs are great and friendly 4 out of every 5 times I go. The service for beverages or anything from the kitchen directly leaves much to be desired. There has been an occasion when I walked up to the manager to ask for my beverage since I had not had one refill and the meal was over and our waitress had not returned once. Don't expect great drinks or fast refills but when you go and are friendly to the chefs they make it a great experience where we have even brought the little ones and the chef did wonderful tricks for us and always makes us smile. They even stopped and told my daughter to sit back before the lit the big fire and made sure she got to see all the fun that is cooking at the table.

Cons: Drinks and Refills

After hearing the locals rave about this restaurant I was excited. The moment we got to our table it was awful. The chef was clusmy and dropped utensils on the floor. At one point he just left the food cooking without any explanation. He tried to do a trick with an egg and my son's fried rice had eggshell in it. I mentioned it to the cook he just shrugged. He was placing meat on another ladies plate and missed stated;"The five second rule counts" and placed the meat on her plate. The ladies face was flushed red with embarassement. The cooked attempted to turn the rice bowls on a spatula and dropped not one bowl but two bowls in attempt to dazzle us. Awful. The food was mediocre at best the portions were small the salad and soup terrible. The bill 158.00 for two adults and 2 y/o. Don't waste your time going to this place. It's a beautiful building but the service is terrible. I had two glasses of wine to stomach the food. Which reminds me I had a 12 dollar itchiban drink couldn't even drink it was terrible.

Pros: thank Goodness they served liquor

Cons: The entire Dining experience was a mess

After reading all these reviews raving about Ichibans, especially 2 in particular that said they liked it more than Benihana, I had to give it a try. Benihana is my all-time favorite restaurant since as long as I can remember, so I really had some high hopes for Ichibans. When I called in to make my reservation, I asked for a more experienced chef and we ended up getting the head chef! I really liked the set-up of the place and everyone was nice. So far, so good. But, It all went downhill from there. The food SUCKED plain and simple. Everything was swimming in this AWFUL sauce!!! The food itself was cooked so good, but then it was all ruined when the chef poured some gross red sauce all over it. Everytime he put it on something else, I cringed!! It was awful. The meat was so tender and perfect when he cooked it, and then, BAM the sauce and it's ruined. We spent $98 for just two people and NO drinks. I wouldn't have paid $5 for that food. Benihana ONLY from now on. Nothing beats that place. I grew up in LA, so if you are ever there, go to the one in Encino! Nothing can beat it!!

WORST experience EVER!! We were told the wait for two at the sushi bar would be about an hour. It was actually 3 hours! The sushi was ok -- nothing special, the sushi chef was rude and the manager even worse. The only thing nice about the place were the servers at the bar where we spent 3 hours of our evening. We will NEVER go back!

12 of us visited Ichiban on Saturday night for our holiday party. A good time was had by all! The staff at the front asked us nicely to wait in the bar until our whole group arrived, so we gathered at the bar. We were a little late getting everyone there, but they didn't mind. We got called and went to our table upstairs. The waiter, Ari, greeted us and explained the menu. He had a lot of patience because most of my coworkers were talking and not paying attention. The sushi appetizer came first and was it ever nice - big rolls and colorful, fresh fish. The tuna was almost red! Our chef that night was a guy named Lam. I think I saw him on the food channel competition once. He puts on a great show and the food is wonderful. I liked the beef the best, but the shrimp and lobster were so tender. There was a lot of interaction between the diners and chefs and servers which made for a really fun night. We'll being going back to Ichiban again!

I was a little weary trying Ichibans. I've gone to Benihanas before and was really disappointed, and after reading jjn867's comment, I got worried it was going to be just like Benihanas. I'm am so glad that I didn't pay attention to that review. Ichibans is THE BEST!!! The food was wonderful! My husband and I both had the Superior (came with everything) and our kids had the kids meals. Ichibans is now our family's favorite restaurant! Our chef was so funny and very entertaining... my kids are still asking me if they can try the egg trick! This is definately a place you need to try for yourself and make your own decision. Personally... I LOVE IT!!!

My girlfriends and I just had dinner at Ichibans last night and we can not get over talking about how much we love this place! We had sushi at the lounge before dinner and we unanimously agreed that they are one of the best we ever had here in the Midwest. The highlight of our dinner was our chef who was very entertaining and funny, not to mention the succulent shrimp and the delicious steak "like candy" most of us had that he prepared right on our table. I will definitely go back to Ichibans and will bring along my whole family who loves to eat!!!

This place is just as bad as the sushi you get in all-you-can-eat Chinese buffets. Complete and utter rip off. They charge you nearly $30 for low quality sushi. Meanwhile, a sushi dinner at a premium sushi bar goes for around the same amount!!! There are many great sushi places in the twin cities. I am really surprised as to how ichiban is staying in business serving the dog food they do. To top it off, the service is atrocious, you have to constantly hunt down the servers to get your drink, etc.
I do not recommend Ichiban AT ALL!!! This place is a disgrace to the twin cities fabulous food scene.

I used to go to Ichiban all the time for over 8 years. In the last year, they have gotten extremely cheap, have a new supplier with horrible product and then the management gives you attitude when you ask them why it's so bad now. You're better off buying sushi from the grocerty store; just total garbadge. Go to Sushi Tango, Fuji-Ya or Oragami or to Blu in Uptown for their all you can eat sushi on Sunday evenings. You'll be much happier and won't feel completely ripped off nor have to speak to a manager who wants to pretend there's no problems with the bad sushi their serving. Just do yourself a favor and stay away! It's not, at all, what is used to be so don't waste your time or money.

Horrible place with bad food, bad service, and unsafe environment. I was visiting Minneapolis for the first time with family. We went for the sushi buffet and 15 minutes after we sat down, when I looked for my bag to get my camera, my bag was missing. I asked the hostesses and they were completely apathetic. They simply did not care. Sushi chef saw a man enter the restaurant freely walked around pretending to find a friend. He also saw him walking around with a jacket held on his arms back and forth couple of times. My entire bag, camera with pictures, ipod, cash, keys to my car and apartment, gift cards, phone, ID, and wallet was ALL TAKEN. Not only did they let this man in without identifying whether he had a table, who he was with or escort him to a table, they ignored the whole situation. In fact, Manager NEVER SHOWED UP even when the police arrived. He only came out reluctantly when we asked for him. After all this, he actually asked us to PAY for the meal!!!! He did not apologize nor did he do ANYTHING to help us when I had lost over $1000 worth of my personal belongings at their business. Sushi was horrible (at least what I did eat) and service is horrendous. If you want to eat at a safe place where you are not in fear of being robbed, I would not eat here. This place is horrible.

My boyfriend and I went here for Valentine's day. It was BOOKED on Valentine's night so we settled for the next evening. They had GREAT customer service. The host stands at your table until everyone is seatted properly THEN he leaves. The waiter comes and tells you all about hte specials and how to order -this was a plus since it was our first time there. The food is VERY VERY Succulent! RECOMMEND the SUPERIOR dinner. It has a bit of everything. And the appitizers are great - TRY THE CHICKEN WINGS. it's worth the money, if you substitute the chicken liver for the chicken wings. I had the superior dinner and my boyfriend had the lobster dinner with substitution for chickenwings- our bill was $91.42

I went to the sushi bar on a Saturday night for their all you can eat sushi. I called before I went to see if I could make a reservation and was told there were no reservations at the sushi bar. The man on the phone said that if I "got in the door before 6pm" that I could take advantage of their $25 early bird special (normally the price is $29.95/per person for an hour). My date and I were there at 5:45. There was a wait so we put our names on the list. We waited for 45 minutes. During that time we hung out at the lounge and were talking to the bartenders who were very friendly and cool. I asked them about the early bird special (with our wait being so long) and he said it's true that you can get it if your name is on the list by 6pm however it doesn't apply on Saturdays. We finally got seated, ate, and then received our bill in which we did not get the special price. When I asked our server about it, she said it does apply on Saturdays but you had to be seated before 6 to get it. It was not a big deal since it was only a $5 per person difference, however, everyone should get their story straight. We were told 3 different things! The service at the sushi bar was sporatic. We overheard a server ask the couple next to us if they wanted Miso soup as it came with the deal but we were not asked. Also, we got sat at the 'end of the line' as far as the little boats coming around so by the time they got to us, the good stuff was already taken so if you go, try to not get seated at the end. It was also a awkward location as there was a hole underneath the counter right next to me where servers kept coming and shoving tubs of dishes through. I had to move every time someone did that to avoid getting jabbed by a tub. Despite the obtacles, the sushi that did happen to come my way was not bad.

I'd always looked at Ichiban as one of those fancier/special restaurants. The first time I'd ever been there was prom but of course at that age everything seemed fancy and over the top. My fiance and his cousin who came into town over the weekend decided to visit since we all hadn't been there in years. Ichiban was not how I remembered it- it looked extremely beat down. The 1st thing that caught my attention was the cheap Christmas lights that were stringing from the mirrored walls and ceilings-TACKY. Even though we had a reservation, we still waited 15-20 minutes to be seated. My fiance ordered the teriyaki chicken and shrimp dinner and his cousin had the teriyaki scallops and filet mignon dinner. I had sushi, a yellowtail roll & winter roll. The show was horrible, I don't think our chef knew what he was doing because he banged his utensils on the table so much that it just became this loud, annoying sound-nothing artful, nothing extraordinary The food on the other hand was disgusting. My fiance's fried rice was cooked in so much butter that it made the fried rice soupy. His cousin's dinner wasn't any better- his scallops weren't cooked through so they had to bring it in back and recook it for him! Their entire dinner was over drenched w/sauce, almost as if the chef knew the food was bland so he poured on the sauce to give it some flavor. To top things off, something in the sushi made me sick. I think it was because the fish wasn't as fresh or it could have been from eating one of the uncooked scallops, whichever it was, we won't ever return to Ichiban again. My advice to Ichiban is to retrain your chefs and renovate! For everyone else, take your out of town guests elsewhere, there is so much more to Mpls than this gigantic hole in the wall.

But if I was a music producer from Hollywood with a fussy, high-maintenance girlfriend, I think I'd be intelligent enough to know that if my girlfriend didn't want rice, a sushi bar would probably not be a good choice:

Su-shi
Noun
From "su" (vinegar) and "shi" (meshi, or rice).

The sushi (vinagered rice) here is excellent. The fish is always fresh and well prepared, and the service is attentive. The sake' selection is decent and the Japanese beers are the standard variety. All things considered, their all-you-can-eat sushi is a pretty decent value. If you don't like rice, there's a McDonald's nearby. I hear their burgers are very popular among Hollywood producer types, and if you don't finish your meal, there's no extra charge.

Pros: Great sushi, reasonably good deal if you do the all-you-can-eat thing

Cons: Finish your rice or you'll get a spanking

I have been going to Ichiban's for over 20 years, have had great service and food. My wife and I had dinner last January, arriving just as they opened. As the restaurant was empty, we were expecting a casual dinner with a great show. Unfortunatly, the chef was in a hurry. Evidently, a large party was about to arrive upstairs, so he cooked and shoveled our food on our plates so fast that we ended up with a large pile of goo that you had to dig through to find your entree's (we allways order the combo, the most expensive meal). We were in and out on less than 40 minutes, what a crappy experience. When I called to explain what happened, the manager claimed he was sorry and next time explain that you want a chef that wouldn't rush you. What?!?! He also claimed that he would send a gift certificate right out to us for 25 bucks. Still waiting on that one. We used to drive 70 miles to Ichibans for dinner, every year. Its a shame the current management cares so little for long time customers. I think I will give my money to thier competition next year.

My Fiance and I went to Ichibans for our aniversary, and we were amazed! The Teppanyaki style of eating was awesome, and the chef was a lot of fun! Order the filet mingon and fried rice... I can honestly say that this is the BEST Japanese food I have ever eaten and I plan on going back for more. Ichibans is fun, and definately a great place to eat. It is a bit expensive, but the ambiance, people, and of course the food and its quality are beyond worth it! If you are looking for AMAZING food, and a great atmosphere.. then check out Ichibans! You wont be disapointed.

Pros: GREAT FOOD, GREAT AMBIANCE

Cons: None that come to mind!

.

much too expensive for what they charge you for. Ambiance is great, and you just get excited to be there, but when it came down to what you're there for, i feel that Ichiban fails. The Hibachi chef wasn't enthusiastic, so it was a semi-disappointing show. Still cool, but not as cool as you thought you know? There was a little Asian guy who i REALLY REALLY wanted to be at our table, but no luck. He sang, made jokes, and talked the entire time. Our guy-- silent.

BTW, my boyfriend paid for everything (bill was like $100), and he wrote the tip on the little tip line and totaled it at the bottom of the tab like you're supposed to right? THEY CHARGED HIM THE TIP TWICE. The restaurant took the tip and added it to the total at the bottom of the slip. How bad is that? Self-given 40% tip? *argh*

Pros: pretty place to go

Cons: prices, experience depends on chef

I've been to Ichiban with both family and friends and have always found their food to be excellent. I would highly recommend the steak/shrimp meals; cautioning against eating the fried rice.. it's delicious but more expensive. Also, try the chicken liver if you've never tried it before.. I was very hesitant about eating it, but when I finally did, I realized it was pretty good. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. The cooks are usually very entertaining; be sure to get into it and "oo" and "aa".. it makes the experience more enjoyable.

I went to Ishiban's for a bday celebration. Compared to other places, you can get much better sushi for the price. I recommend the filet mignon. They are actually a steakhouse. The service is so-so. Our party had a reservation and it took them over 30 min. to get us seated. They didn't offer us a drink.
It's a neat show for those who have never seen them slice and dice, and throw the knives around.
They could totally improve their service and lower their prices. They are getting people to go just by their name but people will not go back.

Who doesn't love to be entertained while they wait for their dinner.? Even better when the entertainement is your food being cooked at your table. Those guys are amazing with their knives. The food was fantastic. Probably the best filet and fried rice I've ever eaten in my life. The Buddah cokatail was delicious and you even get to take you glass home with you.

Since that has NOTHING to do with the restaurant I will talk about the dining.

We went to Ichibans with some friends who were in from out of town. They really thought that Ichibans was an excellent place for sushi compared with some places in Tampa. We did the all you could eat and the Sushi Chef made for a great dining experience. We were in hysterics laughing. The food is good and presented well. Guess what, My girlfriend ate the rice! Exciting huh? I recommend this restaurant to anyone who is interested in a good sushi bar. Going back next week but will not be at the bar. We are going to try the Hibachi setting. I will post my review after I try that arrangement.

I had the best time at the sushi bar! Hiroshi and Katie were super nice, and extremely attentive. What also impressed me was that on the day that I was there it was very busy, and they made me feel like I was the only person at the sushi bar. I will come back for sure.
Thank you a very satisfied customer!

This place is a joke for fine dining. I am a music producer from Hollywood and me and my girlfriend were hungry for Sushi. Well we sat down and did not want all you can eat but thats all they had. My girlfriend is on a diet and does not eat rice so she just ate the fish that was on the rice roll. About 20 minutes later the waitress comes up an say's you have to eat your rice or we will charge you double the price which would be 60.00 each for a few pieces of sushi. Folks of you are looking for a nice respectable place to eat this nit it, THIS PLACES S$@KS AND THE SUSHI IS HORRIBLE LOOK AT EVERYBODIES REVIEWS ARE HORRIBLE. NOBODY TELLS ME IN A RESTAURANT WHAT TO EAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY WILL FORCE THE RICE DOWN YOUR THROAT

I thought that this is the worst buffet that I have been to in the country. It is very expensive, about 30 dollars for each person plus tax and tips. The final cost could reach 40 dollars, for some rice and shrimp wrapped by seaweed-like wrappers.

I just went to Ichiban's for my birthday with a small group of friends, and we all an amazing time! The service was great, the food delicious, and the show outstanding! Everyone was thrilled with their food! I upgraded my appetizer to the sushi so I could try a little of everything and did not care for it. I would not go back for the sushi, but the teppanyaki was just breathtaking! Be prepared to spend a lot of money, though! It was pricey, but we got dinner and an amazing show! I would highly recommend it and look forward to my next visit! By the way, the plum wine is a must!

I highly recommend the filet mignon and the salmon, however, I caution you to stay away from the chicken liver appetizer. It is worth opting to pay more to not get it. A great place to go for a first date, its a social setting but also allows you to talk to your date as well. It was nice to visit a different type of restaurant.

I had a ton of fun at Ichiban's! My girlfriend and I went there for our anniversary and had a blast. I will tell you, you have to listen as you place your order. There are "fun" little charges added on for items above and beyond what is listed (ie, fried rice, exchanged appetizers, etc..). The food was good and our cook was hilarious. You know you're going to drop some coin, but it's an experience. I'll certainly go again!

Let's not mince words. This place is expensive. If you are looking for affordability, go somewhere else. This place will give you a decent dinner and entertain you for about $30 a plate. Add drinks and it gets pricey quickly. Still, how many places can you see the knife play that you do here? The Chefs are very entertaining, and very personable. If asked nicely, they may even perform special feats for you.

Parking is easy with the ramp next door, and there is no smoking right now. The beer selection was limited, but they do have several varieties of Saki. I also didn't enjoy the upcharges on the better appetizers.

All in all, plan on dropping significant coin and just enjoy yourself.

Ichibans is best for dining with a large group! The food is expensive, but fabulous and well worth it for a special night out. The presentation is great as well! Very fun!

However, the sushi is NOT GOOD. There are far, far better places to go here in the TC's. But, why eat sushi here? It's a steak house.

Eating at Ichiban Japanese Steak House is a very unique experience. You sit around a big square table and the chef prepares your meal in the center while you watch. The meal preparation is very good entertainment. You get to eat little by little as they prepare the various parts of the meal. It's a little spendy for dinner, but well worth it for the whole experience!

They have a sushi buffet that is incredible! I eat sushi in every place I travel. I have only been to one other sushi buffet in this country. I like having all you can eat sushi. This gives me a chance to try sushi I have never considered. The staff and sushi chefs are outstanding. They recognize people who have only come a few times. I have seen families with children eating at the sushi buffet.

If you love sushi, I challenge you to try Ichiban's Sushi Buffet!

My husband and I have visited here a couple of times and I'm always delighted! The place is decorated so beautifully! I do not eat sushi so I do not know what the sushi is like, but I did have the filet mignon with scallops and it was so good it practically melted in my mouth. I was able to try things I've never tried before. Also the chef's put on a fun show to watch. On my first visit here the chef threw fire on each of our plates! It was awesome! The servers are kind and helpful. If you go - make reservations - or you could wait up to an hour (or more if you have a large party) for seats.

This was the most overpriced place I have eaten. The food was ok, without being special. The show by the chef was definitely better than the cooking. The Japanese would be ashamed of this place, as should anyone who likes to get value for their money. It cost over $80 for 2 of us, and was worth about $5, for the show.
We were also made to wait about 20 mins for our table, and were not offered a drink, despite having a reservation.
AVOID THIS PLACE, even if you have a special occasion. Money is better spent elsewhere

We had a reservation and arrived promptly, but had to wait almost 30 minutes before being seated. While we were waiting, no one in the bar approached us for drink orders. The chef was really nice and fun, but the food is EXTEMELY overpriced. It tasted fine, but it wasn't great or even good - bland and boring. I had heard before going there that it was very expensive, but decided to go for the experience. After going, I can say I would definitely not go back there.

This is a place to go for entertainment and a good dinner. The chef did a great job and the atmosphere was great. The food was interesting and flavorful. Great for those who have never been to a Japanese Steakhouse before. Watch out who you sit next to. We were seated next to a pompous lawyer who enjoyed talking about himself too much and demanded attention from the whole table.

I thought Ichiban was the greatest. It was really entertaining and the food was great. The chef at our table was really funny, keeping us laughing and fully engaged in the meal. It was just great. Sure, I'm swayed because the chef was flirting with me, but that just increased the experience, right?
