Although we like El Azteca better then Don Pablos-because of better food and better drinks, there are some things we didn't like:We have been there several times, but found the service a bit on the slow side. For example, by the time they bring a second basket of chips, our food comes right after that. We have never been asked if we want more to drink Our food is half gone before they come back and ask us how things are and if we need anything. (Like more sour cream-they are very skimpy on the sour cream that comes with your meal) And the most recent thing... My husband ordered fajitas. He was brought a big pile of food, but only 3 tortillas to eat it with. Naturally, he needed more. We found out when we got the bill, that we were charged for more fajitas. The waitress pointed out that it says under "side dishes" that you are charged for more (We never looked under side dishes because more tortillas for your fajitas is not a side dish, in our opinion. Every place else we've been, gives you more tortillas for no charge). We felt that when you order food, like fajitas, you should be given enough tortillas to be able to eat your food in the first place. It's not like we ordered more salsa, or more meat or cheese. So we were very disappointed about that too.
First off, you should know that the liquor license issue has been straightened out. Under the new ownership, they seem to check and swipe everyone's IDs.
Second, their food is delicious (I'm addicted to the "taco loco") and are actually made with decent quality meats unlike Mexican fast food. Their drinks are delicious. The dessert I tried was the only thing I found to be just okay (fried ice cream). The other dessert items looked tasty, though, so maybe try something else.
The staff is great. Most of them do seem to be native Spanish-speakers, but those who are clueless when it comes to espanol will do just fine.
Coming here is like taking a miniature trip to Mexico. It's a great place to reminisce about your last trip to Mexico or plan a future one! The mariachis add a little something extra to the ambiance when they're there. I love this place!
I absolutely love this place! The staff is very friendly and helpful. They refill your glass of water or pop before you finish it or have time to ask. For many of the staff, English is their 2nd language and it can be difficult to understand them (or for them to understand you). I love practicing my Spanish with them and they definitely appreciate it. It's almost like being in Mexico! The food is definitely authentic -- very flavorful. I highly recommend the fajitas for two. I usually get those every time (assuming my dinner date is up for sharing). During lunch I get the fajita quesadilla -- single portion and very tasty. The prices are an incredible value. Piles of food for less than $5 for lunch and less than $10 for dinner. Some nights they have a live mariachi band which adds to the ambience. The one downside is that they have been having difficulties with their liquor license and have been unable to serve alcohol for months at a time. It's hard having Mexican on a Friday night and not enjoying a margarita with it!
We've only ever used their carry out service so I can't comment on the table service, but I'm not overly impressed. The food tastes fine - not stellar, but will satisfy your craving for mexican food. The carryout service seems hurried and unprofessional - the order takers on the calls that we've made never seemed to be able to hear us as their order desk is right in the middle of the seating area, they don't take your name so they have to search the orders for your items, and they keep the food waiting for you away from the kitchen - it's not under heat lamps to keep warm until you get there. Aside from that, I don't think i'd enjoy eating there anyway - the kitchen is in a corner rather than stretching across the back so it is L shaped, making the dining area seem cramped. You can probably find better for your money.

I can't imagine how anyone has had a negative experience at El Azteca! I have been coming here at least once a month for the past two years with a variety of different friends and family. Aside from the occasional language barrier when menu questions arise, no one has had a complaint.
I typically order the taco loco or mushroom quesadilla with a jumbo Texas margarita to wash it down. The food is out FAST after you order it, and the quality of the chicken vs. some other Mexican places I've been to (Chevy's, Taco Bell, Chipotle) is far superior. I will continue to return to my little slice of Mexico for years to come! It's a great opportunity to practice my Spanish.
I recommend grabbing a couple of friends and sharing a pitcher of margaritas. So many of my friends and family are in love with this place, they almost don't have enough room for all of us. They should really take over the Quizno's space next door and make us a party room!
LOVE EL AZTECA!
Pros: Giant margaritas, fast service, quality chicken
Cons: Language barrier, limited seating for large groups
I have to agree with the previous reviewer. Like them, we made the horrible mistake of going to this dump for Cinco de Mayo. Simply awful. I have never experienced worse service in my life. It was like the bartenders were surprised when you asked them if you could get a drink (yes, you had to ask them b/c they wouldn't acknowledge you). After 30 minutes of being ignored, I finally ordered a margerita and a beer.....I got neither. After 3 attempts to explain my simple order to the bartender, I was finally delivered my drinks. 35 minutes after I entered the place, we had our first sip.
And the manager, yes this guy is incompetent. We witnessed several other people complaining to him about the service and he looked like he couldn't care less. In fact, the service was so awful you could hear other people in the bar joking about "the great service here."
Whoever recommended this place must be nuts. Save yourself and go to Taco Bell, you'll get the same "mexican food" but without the incompetency.
Pros: If you can find one, please let me know.
Cons: service, manager, staff, etc.
We went with another couple on Cinco De Mayo and
it was the worst evening ever.
The service was horrible, it took 15 plus minutes just to
get the bartenders attention to get a drink. We ask for
chips and salsa and that took more than 1/2 hour.
Order cheese dip and they brought the dip without chips. The cheese got cold, had to send back and ask
to reheat and to bring chips. When that came back it was luke warm...ugh! Our friends must of asked for chips and salsa 5 times before they got them. We ordered our dinner and that came and we had no silverware. (how are we suppose to eat our food) We ordered
another margarita and it was just mix, NO TEQUILA!
When we mentioned this to the bartendered and she argued with us and said there was, like we didn't know. We complained again and this time she hastily grabbed a bottle of tequila and spilled and slopped a few drops in the glasses and barely any went in. We told them the drink was awful and just to take it off our bill and she
said NO! Shock! We said no you take it off our bill, we didn't even drink a drop of it. Unbelievable. After that we were not offered another drink and was ignored. Completely rude and ignorant staff.
I was watching the manager who has anger issues because he gets frustrated that he doesn't speak or understand english. He was slamming his hands on the bar and yelling at customers. He has got to be the worst manager. In his eyes the customer is wrong and if he/staff makes mistake they do not own up to it and will get mad at you for demanding good service. I would say that is wrong.
We left them no tip and will never return and we will make sure we tell all our friends who will tell their friends and so on what a awful place this is.
Pros: Nothing good about this place
Cons: Manager yells at customers-he cannot speak good english
Admittedly, after living in San Diego for many years as well as having a native San Diegan as a spouse, I am pretty selective about Mexican food. After reading many of these reviews, I thought we'd check it out. First of all, I ordered the #26 but was brought a #2. They were quick to get the correct order out. When my combination arrived (chile rellano, burrito, and enchilada), I couldn't determine which was what! They were all swimming in red sauce. No other garnish....terrible presentation. The chile rellano was pretty good but the enchilada and burrito were sub-standard. They tasted the same - shredded beef in a suace soaked tortilla. The service was weak - it was not busy but we had to flag our waiter down for our one and only water refill.
Then to top it off, I went to use my Entertainment Happenings Card. I was told that there was an error, and that it was not "buy one get one free" but rather "buy one and one for 1/2 off".
That was our first and last trip to El Azteca!
Still seeking a good Mexican restaurant. And don't suggest Pepito's! We lived across the street from there a few years back and couldn't believe that TC folks think that is good Mexican cuisine!
Cons: Don't honor the Entertainment Card as per ad in book
I have been going to Rey Azteca in Chanhassen since it opened. When I moved, the manager told me to try it's sister store, El Azteca in Plymouth. The food is the same, but the atmosphere was so much better. There is nice outdoor seating and the restaurant is beautiful inside. The staff has always been great. They even bought me a tequilla shot for my birthday. I have tried many things on the menu, but I always go back to my favorite, Enchilada Supreme. There fajitas are good, too. I recommend the seafood ones. It is huge, so order more tortillas and share it. If you are looking for good tex-mex, give it a try. Make sure to order the cheese dip. It sometimes is watery, but the taste is very good.
Pros: Outdoor Patio and fresh clean look!
Cons: Watery Cheese Dip
After reading reviews of others and hearing great things through word of mouth, my family decided to give it a shot. Boy, were we disappointed! My margherita was extremely watery and my food was the consistency of baby food even though I ordered something with beef. The food had no taste, even when I added hot salsa! Will not return again.
Pros: No wait, parking lot
Cons: Flavorless food, watery drinks, waste of money
Our family who loves Mexican wanted to eat at this restaurant, but my daughter who is deathly allergic to eggs needs special care when she eats out. I tried to talk to the veru irritable and rude manager who ended up screaming at me "MAAM I ELL YOU WE DO NOT USE EGG UNLESS THE CUSTOMER WANT IT THE EGG!!!!!!!!!!!!" I was trying to ask about cross contamination. This manager was rude and completly ignorant about allergies. Even the best food is not worth risking a childs life. How sad.
I can't imagine you even having this place in your list of good restaurants. When we came in and asked for a Margarita, the waiter told us that they had lost their liscense and that they could no longer serve any liquor, including beer and wine. I ordered seafood fajitas. What I got was a plate of something that looked like and had the consistency of Chow Mein. It was reheated in a microwave and totally unedable. This restaurant should be off of everyone's list. Under no circumstances should anyone eat at this insult to those who cook and eat Mexican food.
Pros: Nice waiter
Cons: horrible food, depressing ambiance as sheets cover the unuseable bar
Lived in TX and finally found a Mex rest. with real Mex food. Not the chilis crap and real hot food, not Minnesota hot (taco bell). I go to the one in Anoka too. More food than i can eat and great BDay parties. Salsa is awesome too.
Pros: Food, Service, Prices
I'd always complain that there were no decent Mexican restaurants in the TC until I found El Azteca; It's now a regular stop for my husband and I. El Azteca is a casual place to meet up with friends for some good Mex food that doesn't give you stomach cramps. They have an extensive menu and great margaritas, which is key :)! Warning: Their complimentary chips 'n salsa with the ranch dip is so good, it's addicting! Try it out- good times!
Pros: Food & Drinks, Great Value, Easy-going place
Cons: Cramped entryway
my future wife and I have eaten at this restaurant several times and highly recommend it.they now know us by name, food prices are great and so far we have yet to find mexican food taste and quality no where close to theres.because of friendly employees and authentic atmosphere we continue to return even when we pass several other mexican restaurants to get there.we are even going to use there food for our rehersal dinner.HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Pros: FOOD QUALITY, PRICES
Cons: LANGUAGE BARRIER
I ate there a week ago & was disappointed with the service & food quality. Our waiter took my order while 3 other couples were seated around us After approximately 20 minutes all 3 couples were eating & ours hadn't arrived. I asked my waiter where our dinner was & he stated he would check. Approx. 15 minutes later, our dinner was served without an explanation. During dinner, our waiter did not come & ask us once how our dinner was. I had 3 bites of my food & left to pay b/c my food was not properly cooked & I was disgusted with the sevice. I paid the cashier & he didn't even ask us how our dinner was. I was disappointed with the food & service. I have never complained of my food service before but I was very disappointed with this restaraunt & wouldn't recommend this place.
Cons: Terrible Service, Dirty Tables, Not Recommended
This is great Mexican food. Come Hungry. Wait staff is excellent and prices are inexpensive. Two for lunch today without beverages was a total of ten dollars
Something has changed here, and it is not for the better, The refried beans used to be one of their best items. Now they are unacceptable.
One meal was inedible and was exchanged for a different menu item.
i am looking for a new Mexican restaurant
Pros: Price, service
Cons: noise level
I have eaten at El Azteca many times, and have NEVER been disappointed! They have delicious food, and it will be at your table very quickly after ordering. The service is great, very friendly! The menu offers many choices at VERY reasonable prices. I always have a hard time deciding if I should stick to my favorites or try something new. Everything that I or my family members have tried has been great. I especially recommend the burritos! Plus, the sauce that they serve with the chips and salsa is awesome! I have never enjoyed mexican food so much!
Get the Tejas Margarita and you won't be disappointed! I also love the Mucho Burrito. YUM!
Update: they did lose their liquor license back in 2006, but they have it back and the place is awesome.
Pros: fast service, delicious food , good value, GREAT Margaritas
Cons: sometimes noisy
Very authentic food in a nice atmosphere. Prices are decent, including a good happy hour. Margaritas could be stronger. Many of the servers need work on English, but are very friendly. Good location by the Plymouth theater. There is often live music, but it gets to be too loud during dinner.
Pros: Authentic food, Good location, Happy Hour
Cons: Loud music
