My husband took me here to surprise me for my birthday- unfortunately it flopped. The tables were uncomfortably close one another and it was so incredibly noisy from of all the people talking. So we order and right away receive one cheese plate- with crackers- (the bread was still in the oven they said) and we waited and waited- 45min after arrival we finally caught the waitress- asked her if we're getting bread(we were starving) -which she then brought. An HOUR after arrival we received our 'plates' and yes they are tiny- so tiny AND overpriced because of that- you do need to order 2-3 per person- Scallops were good-but you only get two, the salads were good- not too complicated when all you do is throw greens on a plate and squirt your ready made vinaigrette on it- the pork ribs :HORRIBLE -tough, size of the palm of your hand -but ALL bone-I got 2 bites of meat off the whole thing!! My husband complained- no manager on site -will be calling back to speak to him/her. We unfortunately and regretfully still paid with no tip, but WON'T ever go back.

Pros: Good to try and get it on our list for NEVER going back!!

Cons: Noisy, bad service and food.

After visiting the Sample Room yesterday for the umpteenth time, my best friend and I agreed that
we're pretty much over it. It's a great place to stop for an afternoon glass of wine (or two!) but the food
is REALLY on the wrong side of average and was extremely slow in gettin' to us to boot. Add to that
the ridiculous prices, really? They charged us $1.25 for a second basket of bread...now I'm not cheap,
but we spent over $40 on wine and $30 on food. Wouldn't common sense say "Hey, give those people
all the bread they want!" Everything on the menu, and I've had most of it, is definitely overpriced.
Try them for a chat over a cocktail or wine during the day, but skip the food!

Cons: OVERPRICED ALL THE WAY!

Went with some friends last night around 10:30 p.m. Had a great dinner-spot-on service. Their wine list is always fantastic and where else can you get wine, scotch, and tequila flights? Only complaint was that the bratwurst seemed a little over priced- $6.50 for one brat with a little spicy brown mustard. Everything else was amazing and well worth it- the tuna, stickney hill goat cheese, and the ratatuille.

I was told about this place by my hairstylists (Boji Hairstudio, they're the best, also NE:) and have
been here 3 or 4 times. Okay, it's a perfect late after noon, early evening spot. I've always had great
service and the food is 99% bullet-proof. NO restaurant get every dish perfect every time, but overall
the food is scrumptious and reasonably priced. This whole area is very cool and friendly.

i've eaten at the sample room many times, and i never get tired of the food. the menu changes give enough variety for the restaurant to accommodate frequent diners. they have the best burgers, homemade sausages and desserts. perfect for dinner and drinks for groups of 3 or 4 people.

Following a long day at the art crawl in the nearby eclectic artistic neighborhood/haven, my fiance and I strolled along the pathway of the adjacent park while waiting for our outside table to become available. As the door swung open and the smells wafted through the air, our mouths began to water. The crisp iced tea was a perfect beginning to four courses of flavorful ingredients amalgamated as one in an artistic format that rivaled many of the thousand dollar plus pieces of work witnessed a few moments prior to our arrival. The food is nothing less than a phenomenal expression only available from the hands of a well-trained, seasoned veteran. We will definitely be returning for another taste.

I have eaten at the sample room many times. The last being about a year and a half ago. The food was always sort of blah, but decent. I had my favorites but nothing was that great. The wine list was good and the ambience was great. However, I just returned about a month ago, the food was great. Seriously like a 180 degree turn around. The food was vibrant and flavorful, not so drab. Honestly looking back if I had this to compare it to, I would have been disappointed. I am unsure if they have a new chef or they just made some changes on the menu but what a difference a year makes. All of my food was fresh and cooked perfectly. Try the veg torte, and the bratwurst. The wine list was much improved, and my wine, I ordered a bottle, was half off on monday nights. The service was casual and friendly as usual. Again I have to say amazing food, Try it you will not be disappointed.

My wife and I went to the sample room on a saturday night. The wait was about 20 minutes, but we were told we could sit at the bar. we were sat promptly, and the server was very friendly he suggested a few items and we ordered the wine flight (it was great and priced well also). I ordered the salmon entree and my wife ordered the corned beef, bratwurst, vegetable torte, and shrimp. It was wonderful, the salmon was cooked perfectly and the lemon sauce was just great. My wife has been craving the corned beef since we ate there. With the feel, the vibe the great drinks and the good food this place has it all. You can bet we will be back. I highly recommend this place.

if you own a restaurant and don;t care about the food or the service just close the place and go open a footlocker or something. i've been here quite a few times and had some good experiences, but one horrible experience is all it takes to swear off a place forever. mine was last week. my date and I went in around 9 pm. the waitress was outside smoking with some pals and took forever just to take our drink order. the bread came with the food, and when the food did finally come the corned beef was more like corned beef jerky, and the seared salmon was still frozen in the center. FROZEN! Something tells me whatever talent originally conceived this place left a long time ago. Stay away. Stay far away. Or just go to Elsie's and get some mini corn dogs. The service is better and they're not frozen in the center.

My husband heard the food was horrible, so luckily he ate before we went there. Party of six, 6:30 on a Saturday and we were seated right away. The servers wear wrinkled work out clothes, but were professional non the less. Drinks are overpriced for the area, wine is served in very small glasses. The food took over 45 minutes and was horrible. No one enjoyed what they ordered. The shrimp was frozen and very fishy ($10 for 6 small) the scallops over spinach were cooked perfectly, but the spinach was old and slimy. The burger came out like a hock puck. The sausage was a joke, and the summer vegetables were soggy (probably frozen as well). Between the two of us, we spent $80 and left hungry. This is an overpriced and terribly executed menu. The only good thing, is they will re-fill your water at no charge.

To the person that wrote the previous review...why would you bring a 5 year old there? It is not a family style restaurant. It has a bar atmosphere. I wouldn't even bring my 15 yr old there. I like The Sample Room. It is a great place to meet friends for a drink and a meal. A good date place too.

My husband and I thought we would try this place on a Sunday night with our 5 year old son. When we arrived we had to wait to be seated which is fine of course but...there was one party ahead of us (two young women) a booth opened up and it was clear that the next thing to open up would be a 4 high top next to the bar and then nothing for a long time. The 4 top opened up minutes after the booth, would you not seat someone with a child out of the way in booth rather than on a high chair in the middle of the restaurant? I knew then that it wasn't going to be good, as any experienced host/server would never be that dumb. We sit down and a waitress aproaches our table in the sky with some waters and says "I'll be right back with you." please now don't forget about the 5 year old - 15 minutes later (which is like two hours to the 5 year old) she shows back up to take our order, of food. I ordered the drink I had planned on and the cherry 7UP I had promised my son on the ride there in the car. Waitressing 101 take drink orders immediately and never make people with kids wait, get'em in and get'em out. I ordered the scallops and some kind of vegetable pie. Scallops where prepared correctly, the "pie" was not good. The bread was dropped off at our table after the food. I made the mistake of taking one more run at it and ordered the shrimp. Honestly the worst shrimp I have ever had out. Terrible. My waitress stopped back 5 minutes after the shrimp had been delivered by another waitress and told me that they should be ready soon an she would have them right out. Then she looked down and saw them on my table. I would never recommend this place and will not ever go back.

Whenever there is a big family reunion, we try to make a stop at least once to The Sample Room. The is something on the menu for everyone and we usually end up ordering two servings of each plate and just pass them around. Be prepared to drop a pretty penny though depending on the size of your group. But definitely worth it.

For the most part, I really do enjoy the quality food and variety of The Sample Room. A friend and I went there this Saturday to catch up over some good eats and wine. We ordered the Sampler Platter of four different appetizers, and they were all wonderful except for the meatloaf. Now, I just made homemade mealoaf recently, and I'm sorry, but I would have expected better at The Sample Room. It was VERY processed-tasting, and downright dry.
Secondly, it was not very busy the night we went, and yet, the bus staff insisted on grabbing at our food before we were finished. One in particular grabbed my bread with her bare hands before asking if I was finished. Yuck! "Um, NOW I'm done, thanks." It was really annoying and really made my friend and I skip dessert there and go someplace else for it. Too bad, because our waitress was delightful. They just need to train their bus staff on how to leave people alone.

Wow--we love this place! There is a great variety on the menu of interesting food. The food is reasonably priced. The food is served in smaller portions and you can order a variety of items for your meal. It is in a wonderful historic building on Marshall St in the Northeast area of Minneapolis. In the summer, there is outdoor seating.

I was a regular, enamored fan of the Sample Room until...
After having dinner at the Sample Room one night, I discovered my credit card had been charged for two dinners instead of one. It happens, I thought to myself, and since the Sample Room is a neighborhood restaurant and I was a loyal customer, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. I thought I was doing them a favor by contacting them before I contacted my bank. I called the restaurant and was assured that the matter would be resolved by the end of the week. I was also told that if the matter wasn't resolved by the end of the week, I should call them back. Well, the charge was processed by my bank and went through a couple of days later. So I called them back. The second time around, I was coldly received and upon informing them the charge had gone through was told "we reconciled this matter yesterday." Aha - so, now it was my problem (now that it was resolved on their end). The person was very rude to me and I can tell you I will not patronize the restaurant again. Their problem immediately became my problem when I had to sort the matter out on my own by contacting my bank and requesting an "investigation" into the charge. I won't be giving the Sample Room the benefit of the doubt again. It's too bad because I was a loyal, regular neighborhood customer who really liked the food. My advice to you - if you go, pay in cash!

Had late dinner/snacks there last Sunday with my Bride and Daughter. Had the gravlox, baked brie, scallops and crab cakes. Gravlox was great (I make my own), brie was excellent, the crab cakes tasted were almost 100% crab and the pan-seared scallops (size of golf-balls) were as good or better than any I have had at various Seafood establishments in the Cities. The Sous-Chef brought out a sample of the Soup of the day - Parsnip. Quite possibly one of the best soups I have ever had.

My Daughter, 6, ate everything. We also shared 3 wine flights - one white and two red. All were quite approachable and a good value.

Hope you find it as pleasant as our family did. Ambience 9, Service 10, Menu 10.

I've been to the Sample Room on a few occasions and I keep saying, "Give it another chance...." Well, I've given it enought chances - I can't find anything I LOVE here. Everything is just okay. I think it's a bit cramped for my style. Service is good, but I think they need more than 1 server for the place.

Cute and cozy spot to stop and have a glass of wine. Martini's however can be quite expensive. Good wine list though, enjoy with one of their sampler plates where you can choose a taste of different items while sipping on a glass of good wine. Can be difficult to find a spot when it gets busy.

I liked so much about this place - location was good, easy to get to; parking was super easy (they have a lot out back); signage was attractive; the inside atmosphere was spot on - love the size of the place, the lighting at dinnertime, great bar; the staff was great and clearly got on well with the locals - BUT the food didn't quite match. Sandwiches and heavy meats don't really match the atmosphere - is this a cool funky hang out or a sports bar or a nice romantic place to eat? There is so much potential here - they need to drop the sandwiches at dinner, offer fresher more seasonal foods (don't serve those styrofoam non-organic strawberries - yuck!), and offer items for those of us who don't eat meat (like a nice simple light pasta). I don't see this as a dressy stuffy place, I see this as a fun place with fun food. I will definitely be back because it is in my neighborhood, but I would be more likely to have a drink than spend the cash on a so-so dinner. I hope they keep working at the menu because this place is on to something and what eating in Minneapolis could be about.

Ever since my favorite bartender left (where is he now?) this place has been lackluster. Really he was the only reason I went. Here was a place I thought had finally arrived--a neighborhood bar where the bartender knows your name, remembers your drink, listens to you, has a joke to share, shakes your hand. Unfortunately those days are gone again, and I'm left with the gaggle of jaded servers who look like they just woke up and rolled of the couch to come to work. They couldn't me more uninterested in serving me. It's a shame, because I live nearby, but more and more often I find myself driving to other neighborhoods to other restaurants. The food here is good, but a little bit pricey. Once, when I wanted the waitress to take my roast turkey back to the kitchen to heat it up some more, she said the chef was in a bad mood and that she was afraid to even go near him. WOW. I just ate cold turkey.

Looking for a different type of meal? Are you someone who just cant choose one thing on a menu? This is for you.

The cheese/caramelized onions & asparagus with balsamic reduction were amazing. I hear they have some good house drink specials (but I kept to my standard Vodka & Cran) from their fully stocked bar area.

Do bring a small group; Id say if you want to cash in on getting a few plates have a minimum of 3 people and 6 dishes.

I dont recommend the roast turkey (unless you want a boring plate of 5 pieces plain turkey). Like crab cakes (then dont come hungry); the taste is great, but size is sample.

Location: Plenty of parking, but dont drive past this place (its on your left while all the houses on are on right) in the middle of nowhere. Mapquest it and then pay attention.

We loved the Sample Room! I don't usually feel strongly enough about a place to write a review but this place is great!! The food was awesome we had many of the sample plates and also dessert. The flight of wines was fun and I also thought they had a good selection of beer. The wait staff was pleasant and parking was no problem. We did have to wait for about 30 min for a table but got a spot at the crowded bar to hang out. The lighting wasn't as bad as others have commented on either.

The food and service were great (Wednesday night). We each ordered one of the soups of the day (butternut squash bisque or chicken and black bean chili) and shared a seafood sampler platter and a dish of mixed olives. All of the food was delicious. I had a flight of Spanish wines, and my friend had a glass of Pinot Grigio, all excellent. The service was attentive but not overbearing. I love the menu--you can eat as cheap or as spendy as you want--a soup/salad combo is $6.95 and sandwiches between $7-9. We went midrange, so our total with the soups, samplers and wine was about $25 per person, not including tip. Only drawback was being seated at one of their tables for two--you are elbow to elbow with the next table, and the tables aren't big enough for as many dishes as you accumulate "sampling" the food.

Chef makes everything (down to ketchup) in-house! Love the portion size of everything. Plus, you can get a taste of a lot of the menu via the sampling menu. Also, order a flight of wine or scotch. Great selection of wine and beer. The bloody is great also! Small in size so either have a reservation or dine during the off-time. Good; burger, shrimp, baked brie, asparagus, soups (on specials board), cheese selection. Not so good; ahi tuna, ketchup (even though homemade).

I am a longtime Northeast Minneapolis resident and I love the Sample Room. The food is usually very good, although I have found that some nights are better than others. I like the tapas style dining, and the outdoor patio seating in the summer and fall is a nice touch. Good drinks and usually a decent crowd. I have not noticed too many 40-ish suburbanites when I'm there, it's usually a mix between young artist types and older NE Mpls residents enjoying drinks and conversation with friends. The service could be better, I've encountered multiple lousy waitstaff members. But the food and atmosphere are a good addition to NE Minneapolis.

Pros: Atmosphere, Food, Drinks

Cons: Inconsistent waiters, Parking

.

As a NE Mpls resident, I can tell you that it certainly isnt the locals who like this place. The typical patron is suburban and 40ish. The inside is cramped and adorned with bad, imitation Picasso paintings & Sinatras mugshot. The 2 person tables are tiny with no surface area expect to touch your neighbor or server. The food is midwestern boring and overpriced. The samples come from four areas: meat, cheese, seafood,&veggies. Veggies consist of olives?, potatoes, mushrooms?, and asparagus. I tried to order a drink @ 4:50 and was told, no, happy hours over huh?! Dessert I asked for a substitution (2 of same flavor instead of 1 each of 2 diff. flavors) and was told that in order to have what I wanted I was going to have to order 2 desserts. Waiter blamed all on testy owner. The service is usually cold and unwelcoming.

My wife and I went on a double date and were asked to pick a place where we could enjoy good food, have a few drinks, and not have to dress up for an expensive night on the town. Enter The Sample Room. A renovated saloon on NE Minneapolis is the ideal place for "sampling" SR's many outstanding tapas-style appetizers. Don't miss the braised short ribs and SR's cheeses. They also do salads very well (seared scallop is a favorite) and drinks are priced well below the happening spots in Uptown or on Nicollet Mall. I only wonder how long it will take someone to bring a place like SR to the suburbs - are you listening Lakeville???

Pros: Food Quality, Neighborhood Setting, Value

Cons: Could Use More Light, Location (not closer, to my house)

.

My wife and I first visited the Sample Room a few years ago, shortly after it opened. We were disappointed, but suspected the place needed to sort out the kinks.

Fast forward to 2005, and we found ourselves in the neighborhood, looking for a lunch venue. It still existed, so it must be OK, right? Wrong.

We ordered from the sample menu, with 2 cheese, 2 meat, 2 veggie and 2 seafood dishes. Only the cheese came close to our expectations. The baked brie in particular was good. The poultry sausage and scallops were overcooked, the pot pie was pedestrian (with soggy pastry crust no less), the crab cakes were gummy, and the vegetable dishes completely forgettable.

Perhaps I should forgive our waiter for being so enamored with the food. But he raised my expectations to a level this particular food simply could not reach.

I love this place. After hearing good things and realizing how close it is to my home, a friend and I checked it out. It was a Saturday night and mostly full, but we didn't have to wait and it wasn't loud. The service was great, loved the music in the background and I actually like how dark it is in there. It makes for a more intimate setting. Then there is the food. I had the seafood sample platter and it was phenominal. The sushi grade ahi tuna was seared perfectly and the with wasabi sauce, it was a good thing I was sitting down because my knees would have buckled. The crab cakes were also wonderfull and the shrimp was the right size, texture and full of flavor. I love the wine flights too. A great way to sample many different kinds. I am definately becoming a regular....

I love the "sample" menu. You have a lot of choices and the goat cheese is the best! The meatloaf is great, the bacon cheeseburger with blue cheese is wonderful, the chips are good, the home made ketchup is fabulous. I can't say enough good things. Thursday - Saturday in the summer, get there early - there is always a line, which tells me that I want to come back again and again.

This is a great place to get a meal or just a few things to nosh. You can get wine flights, which is a great way to try three wines without buying full glasses. Somewhat along the lines of tapas but more substantial items in the offering lists. High quality ingredients are used and the chef does some fun things with herbs and spices. In the summer, there's outdoor seating available. NE Mpls needs more places like this! Consistent quality, interesting food and non trendy atmosphere.

After hearing rave reviews, I hurried passed a cop on the highway to experience the joy. However, I was very disappointed by the food. We ordered the 8 appetizers to share and most of the food was tepid at best. The ribs were cold and flavorless, mac & cheese was cold and swam in butter, and the roasted veggies should have been called a zucchinni platter instead. The only decent food was the asparagus in balsamic vinegar. I probably will not go back

The dishes created by chef Michael MacKay are superb!!!! The prices are reasonable & the service is friendly & prompt. The owners have done a fine job in renovating an old NordEast bar into a tastefully decorated & cozy place for a fine dining experience. The only drawback to the place are the hideous lampshades above the bar which would be better used as crocks to serve the Creme Brule.

A nice Nordeast Hangout with lots of variety and small dishes to share. Some of the best were the forcemeat pate' with coarse mustard and the chilled flank steak. The tables are a little close and the noise level is high but the architecture of the old place makes up for it. The wine list is affordable but not well recognized (I consider myself well read on wines and I only knew 3 of the 15 selections). Depending on your viewpoint, this could either be very good or alarming. The service was inconsistent (initially quick and helpful, then we did not see our server again for about 40 minutes). However, the food and ambience was worth it and we will go back.

Mmm, if you always want to taste a little bit of everything, then tapas are for you! Tapas, small dishes meant to be shared, are the perfect way to try many foods that are made as you order. Plus, you can have a flight (three little glasses) different but matched wines. How great is that? We had almost everything seafood on the menu- the tuna, the crab cakes, some shrimp, the seafood bisque along with some olives and innovative hashbrowns with onions. All were made as we ordered and tasted fresh and delicious. We placed more orders as we finished different dishes. I also had a very good and generous Cosmo. I love when they refill your glass, giving you the whole drink! The ambience is warm and friendly- don't look up and admire the original tin ceiling- very impressive! An excellent dining experience!

The Sample Room has it all - easy to get to, parking, great setting and a creative but simple menu. The food was great and so well priced - finally a restaraunt in Minneapolis that isn't set at $20/plate just because! Decent beer selection and very good food. The new owners are doing a great job!

There are so many nights i don't have time to cook at home. Eating out can get expensive. This is an excellent, "add to the list", of everyweek diners. I have grown away from food that is overly comforting(ceasear salads, tomato and goat cheese, sausage), however, the price is right. The dinning room is a little too dark and the service is quite random. If you eat out a lot consider this as an option.

i went to the sample room with two friends, and had a great time. the food was in huge portions, really, really good, and the service was fabulous. not a whole lot of seating, and the atmosphere may be a bit dark, but its still worth it to wait to share the candle. northeast is up and coming more and more, and as a northeaster, i love it!

Amazing what the new owners did to the ole' Polish Palace - KUDOS! Unfortunately, our first visit to The Sample Room does not reflect the same sentiments as the other reviewers. We were seated promptly but waited for service for several mins. After placing our beverage order, we found ourselves fighting over the votive candle to read the menu! Ambience is one thing - but if you can't read the menu....after deciding on a four flight sample - we waited, waited, waited. Finally our samples arrived, only one of them a hot item their "signature" hashbrowns were cold. We'll try the Sample Room again - but not in a hurry to rush back.

We tried the new Sample Room last weekend & were pleasantly surprised. First of all the new owners have done a great job doing a complete overhaul of this historic building. The decor is quite charming & well done. The Sample Room concept is a refreshing change to standardized dining fare. For the grand sampler you can choose from a list of approx. 20 different sample sized dishes to create a full meal. The portions are large & the food is prepared & presented wonderfully. Because of the different combinations you would have to go back a few thousand times before you would repeat a meal. We were so impressed that we brought my parents the next day & they were equally impressed. There is also sample flights from the wine list where you get three 2oz. samples of wine. Overall this is an extremely charming experience & highly recommended.

We went for lunch and were seated very promptly. And received our food just as promptly. The menu had a number of good things to choose from..we started w/ a cheese sample..excellent! Then had the special for lunch, which was a homemade shrimp/carrot bisque..also wonderful with a half sandwhich of pest tomatoe and mozeralla on half baguette toasted also very good. The combination that they served for the special went together perfectly. I was told of this restuarant by some people who frequent there at least once week for dinner and have never been disappointed. They love the fact that you can 3 small "sample dishes" and get to have a few varieties. I do believe this restuarant with it's charming ambience is a fabulous choice for either lunch or dinner.
