The pizza is the reason to go here...don't waste time, $ or calories on the pasta! The meatball is the best thing about the spaghetti, and you do get bread served with the pasta, but the pizza is generously portioned and has the right amount of cheese. This is a great place to take a small to mid-sized group out for a hometown meal. The owners are great and the servers sweet.

Pros: Great Value, Great Pizza, Friendly Staff, Small town feel

Cons: Neighborhood, Small Seating Area

Mamas has the best pizza I have had to this point in the twin cities. Its not too greasy and they aren't stingy with the toppings. I have also had their ravioli and spaghetti and meatballs which was also very good. The waitresses are very friendly plus you get a free ice cream cone to top it off.

My wife and I moved to the North End in October of 2007. I did not know about Mama's at that point. I drove by it several times and always saw the "reopening soon" sign and just thought sadly that it was like the other such signs you see along Rice that you assume have been there and will continue to be there gathering dust for years to come. Not this place! I never visited it before they had their damage, but everything I'm reading here still appies to it today. Great food, great service, great character! A true neighborhood type of place and I'm glad it's so near my house. My vegetarian wife and I can go eat there for just over $20 and be absolutely stuffed and happy when we leave. It reminds me of the family run Mexican places in Denver that my family always frequented - the kind of place that knows that good service and remembering your customers is what it is ALL about. My plan is to bring all of my out-of-town guests to Mama's at some point before they leave. I think it is a true taste of Saint Paul! All I can say is thank you for sticking by the North End Mama's! You could have gone anywhere in town and been successful but you stayed with the neighborhood and I for one REALLY appreciate that!

Pros: Food, service, ambiance, portion sizes

Cons: Only that it is small! I'd never want it to leave, but often wish it was bigger!

FYI - Mama's has been open again for the past couple weeks! Time for that hot [derrogatory term for Italian-American that is, apparently disallowed] you've been craving!

My mom started going to Mama's when it first opened, as she lived about 7 blocks away. We used to go there every Friday night and one of the picture collages on the wall has a picture of my sister's 9th birthday party. She's 33 now. I have a picture of me on Tony's shoulder when I was 8 years old. Their mostaccoli can't be beat, it's amazing. The pizza is classic and where else can you watch them make your pizza fresh from a little ball of dough? I've watched Peachie stir a vat of sauce in the back, I've made those little ice cream cones like a professional. I visit mamaspizzaparlor every day to see if they've announced their reopening. Just thinking about a plate of pasta there is making my mouth water. Does anyone know when they'll reopen? The website still says "open sometime in November" and on Friday, November 30, I called the number that I've had memorized since 1st grade, and there was no answer. I'm assuming that they were not ready to open. Please, please reopen soon!

Cons: water pipe burst has had mama's closed since feb 07

I have been eating at MaM'a since I was born. I actually have a photo of me at the age of 1 sitting on Santa's lap. They know me and my family by name and face - that makes you FAMILY! You could not ask for a better place to eat. Sometime they do get busy, the wait is always worth it. I can't wait for them to re-open. I just moved back to that part of town and I am craving some good home cooking! Hope you are back soon!

N8dagr8 sounds like you must be the competitor down the street hurting for business?
Let me be the first to tell you your wife always gets sick when she slides the pepperoni down her throat!
Great Job Mama's I can't wait to see you back up and running and providing one of the best spots to eat on the eastside and Rice street.
My kids love the lasagna!

I read reviews of this place, and even heard people talking about it on the bus, all of which seemed to indicate that this was a great place to eat. My wife and I went there, and I will be the first to tell you that this was the furthest from the truth. The pizza hardly rivaled most frozen pizzas, and the pasta was about the same quality as pasta my four year old niece could make. This is a case of been in the neighborhood for years, so people think the food is good because of the history of the place. Unfortunately, the history and the fact that it has been in business for so many years does not make up for the lack of quality of the food. Luckily, they only accept cash so I was able to walk across the street to get cash while my wife was sick in the bathroom. As stated above, "Avoid at all cost".

Pros: Absolutely nothing (besides the bathroom to lose the food you eat).

Cons: Bad food, bad service, just plain bad.

.

best hometown experience anywhere, great food, great value, WONDERFUL staff. customers and staff REAL folks. and when taking home leftovers (and you need to) they have always added a bit more sauce, and I have never had that anywhere else.

I have eaten at Mama's many times and all I can say is check it out. I like bringing guests from out of town here for the ambiance and all have spoken quite highly of it. The Pizza has a terrific ingredients loaded with cheese. There are other Italian favorites on which one can dine on though. The excellent leadership here shows. If you are in the neighboorhood- Visit Mama's!!!!!!

The kids love it and Tony is always generous to my boys. We travel from Blaine just to appease my appetiate for Mama's!! It is small but I've never waited long for a seat. My father always get's spoiled with at least 2 cones. It's a family thing and we love it!!

I decided to bring my wedding party here for our rehearsal dinner because it was close to our house and I read here how great the food and service were. Even though asthetically it's may not meet everyone's tastes, the unbelievably great food, affordable prices and incomparable service by Tony and his crew washes everything else out. Mama's made our wedding rehearsal truly memorable. They even threw in a couple bottles of champagne and congratulated us! I've never had such great service.

Cons: Seating Space, Parking

Loved the pizza, drooled over the pasta being delivered to other tables, and we loved the Gopher hockey memorabilia. Tony is a great cook and a wonderful personality (and my wife thinks he's a hunk, too!)

If it was just a little bigger, perhaps the smokers could be further away . . . takes a little away from the enjoyment.

I ate at Mama's for the first time recently and it was great. I ordered a 'mini-pizza' - it was as big as a small somewhere else and only $5.00! I have had better pizza other places, but my friends had pasta that was excellent! That's what I would get. I could not believe the large portions for small prices. Atmosphere isn't much, but the friendly service, great food, and cute cone at the end makes up for it. I'm going back, soon!

The moment we opened the door we knew we were in for a great meal. On this cold evening the smell of good food cooking wrapped around us like a warm Italian blanket. The "small" plate of pasta is piled high enough to serve 2-1/2 people. Sauce perfectly spiced & had that just right reddish orange tint of fresh 'maters. The meatballs & sausage were hand made rendering my eyes to roll back and the unconscious uhms to escape my mouth. Foot-stomping belly-warming food topped w/VERY genuine-friendly service at a fraction of the price you'd find in more upscale joints.

It doesn't look like much from the outside, and it's not it the best neighborhood, but it is well worth the effort. The food is filling and good, you can get a steak for under $7, and every meal is topped off with a mini cone of soft-serve ice cream. What could be better?
