Ratings_icons Great service - good food

anonymous l. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,743

We have been to many of the Axel's Bonfires throughout the Twin Cities and the service at Woodbury has consistently been better than the rest. The food is good and the prices are fair - perhaps a bit high for the value. Desserts are fabulous - try the carrot cake

Ratings_icons Fun eating experience

The decor in Bonfire is the first thing that catches you as you walk into the place. It has a fun atmosphere, yet very cozy with the fireplaces. The food is very good, but even more fun is the happy hour. They offer free appetizers in a buffet during happy hour. They also offer banquet rooms if you need to plan a special occasion such as a going away party.

PROS: Good food, great deals
CONS:

Ratings_icons Good food

Terri C. | insider Insider | Rank: 30,200

The food is always good when we go here. It can be difficult to get in on holiday's namely Mother's Day, so get reservations early. The decor is nice, the ambiance of the place is exceptional. It does get busy, so plan ahead. The beer can chicken is good, as is the Drunk & Dirty Sirloin. They are also great with children.

PROS: Good food, exceptional ambiance. Good with kids
CONS: can get busy, as the bar is located close by the door.

Ratings_icons MISSING VEGETABLES

lindainmn

We haven't been to this restaurant in a very long while. It's so out of the way and hidden that one forgets it there. However, after a long absence and being bored from all the other restaurants in Woodbury, we remember Bonfire since we were close by it. Everything seem fine, read the menu and decided on our choices. On their Entrees it says it comes with vegetables and choice of potato. As the waitress brought out our food, my plate had 2 slices of BBQ beef brisket and my choice of potato which was a baked potato, two small containers one having bbq sauce and the other one had fixings for the potato. There were NO vegetables served with my meal. I guess they consider the sauces as vegetable. What a Rip-Off!! We are NOT returning.

Cons: MISSING FOOD --cheated out of money

Ratings_icons Great ambiance and service.... so-so food

california_dreamin

The flirtini is worth the trip by itself. The service is good, and the recipes are good enough that even the talentless hacks in the kitchen can't screw it up too badly. That said... be prepared for any piece of beef or tuna you order to be overdone. Shrimp, on the other hand, will be all but raw -- you'll probably want to take that home with you for further cooking. I'm convinced that they hire the cooks direct from McDonalds. Which is amazing, because they charge as though an actual chef was preparing the food. That said... the recipes and seasonings are good enough that even the no-talent hacks in the kitchen can't screw it up too badly. So, with decent food, good ambiance, and that killer flirtini... we end up going pretty often. I just have to resist the urge to go to the kitchen and show the short-order cooks how to properly prepare a meal. (And, no, I'm not a professional. I just actually like food and enjoy preparing it.) In short... fire all the cooking staff, hire someone with some culinary training, and you'll have a top-notch restaurant on your hands.

Pros: flirtini, good recipes

Cons: really really bad cooks, overcooked meat, undercooked shellfish

Ratings_icons THE PLACE for pretentious people and overpriced fair

cinglestar

Maybe its just that I only seem to return to Axel's on 1/2 price wine night, but I have not have experiences to rave about. Axel's is 50-50 on wait service - half stellar and half snobby slouches. The bartender is a total jerk...not quite sure what part of serving drinks her doesn't understand. The food looks interesting, but after tasting mussels, wings, beef appetizer and some "signature" soufle bread - I am not impressed in the least for the price of the fair. I would not return if it wasn't for the insistence of friends who live in the neighborhood. The success is only made possible my its location an convenience to its patrons. If you're not living in the Prestwick community, there are dozens of restaurant/bars with much better food, much better service and all at a much more reasonable price. This store certainly doesn't give the other Bonfire Grill's their due justice.

Pros: 1/2 priced wine selection isn't bad. Cougar night.

Cons: service and low value for food/price ratio

Ratings_icons Overpriced

ali2000

My husband and I ordered two drinks, an appetizer and two entrees. It was tasty (except for the drinks - a mojito and a margarita -they were gross!) And it was definetly not worth $75! We eat out every week and there is way better food out there for that price.

Ratings_icons BEST FOOD AND SERVICE!!

jamiec3320033

Bonfire is always consistent in serving great food and having awesome service. I wish every resturaunt treated their customers the way they do. No matter what location I go to, the food is always phenomenal. From the first time I went there, I was treated like I was the only one there even when it was really busy. At the end of my meal they took my food and boxed it up for me instead of bringing me a box!! Keep up the good work!

Pros: food, parking, service

Cons: absolutely nothing

Ratings_icons Will not return, Do not recommend

mngal1_99

We have eaten at Axels Bonfire now twice...lunch and supper, both times the noise level was way to high, it is open and very loud inside. The food at both meals was poor and spendy for what we got. We feel we did not get our money's worth, the atmosphere was not comfortable, you wanted to eat and get out. Service was slow.

Pros: location

Cons: decor, noise level, spendy

Ratings_icons Bonfire takes "smashing" literally

notfrommn

All was well going well until the very end, when I took a final mouthful of my "smashing potatoes" and I bit into a small stone. When our waitress came to give us our check, I showed her the stone and suggested she may want to point it out to the kitchen, so they can watch out for stones. She basically said that is interesting and took our plates to the kitchen. A few minutes later she returned to collect my payment, I then asked to see the manager. When he arrived, I mentioned the stone, suggesting he tell the chef. He said, a "stone" and looked at me rather oddly. At no point did he or the waitress offer any real apology. My conclusion based on their lack of reaction is that it is commonplace to find stone's in your food at Bonfires in Woodbury.

Ratings_icons Nice surprise

bullseye079

Just built a home and Savage, little did I know Axel's Bonfire was doing the same. Same great food and atmosphere just a little south of the river. I had a great chicken pasta dish and a good cup of chicken tortilla soup. One of Savage/Burnsville's better options for food. Had a long wait, but it has a larger waiting area so it wasn't too bad. Dueling Pianos after 10pm were fun. There was a TV everywhere I turned my head: Great for a sporting event, but according to my wife not so great for a date.

Pros: Food, Atmosphere

Ratings_icons That's A Mighty Hot Bonfire

lizamarienyc

I have eaten at this establishment on 3 occasions - lunch, dinner, and Happy Hour festivites. I have been pleased with their lunch choices, but a bit disasppointed in dinner and Happy Hour. The service has been excellent all visits.

Lunch has many wonderful choices. Dinner has many choices choices of heavy pasta and steaks. I had the Beer Can Chicken - it was good, but greasy. The Cheddar Hashbrowns were cold with too many onions.

They have some Happy Hour specials, but they are quite small and appetizers off the regular menu were not too tasty - the wings were cold and the spinach artichoke was tasteless.

Martini's were large and flavorful. I will return, but at lunch or for drinks only after work.

Pros: Drinks, Service, Ambiance

Cons: , Pricey dinners

Ratings_icons Burnt Pizza and Bad Service

rickjorgensen

I just had a pizza via carryout. It sat at the bar for 10 minutes before it was given to me. The service has been slow here in the past. It wouldn't have been so bad except for the fact that it was burned black. I for one do not care for pizza this way. At the prices they charge, it should be checked by the cook to be sure the quality is top notch. I have eaten there 6 or 7 times and they have yet to impress me or any of the customers I have taken there. Try frozen...it's better.

Cons: service, food, quality

Ratings_icons Bonfires gone soggy?

katsrap

I started going to Bonfires when it first opened and it was spendy but worth it! The bull bites were excellent, the coconut chicken salad to die for but lately the bites are over-spiced and the salad is soggy. The wait is longer but the service is friendly. It's always busy, so apparently not everyone has noticed the decrease in excellence. I miss the menu that showed care in every dish prepared.

Pros: warm atmosphere, gathering place

Cons: pricey, food poorly prepared, longer wait

Ratings_icons Gone downhill

woodburyguy

I have been going to Axel's Bonfire since it opened. The staff was always friendly and helpful, the food always on time and correct. Lately, not so much, the wait staff seems stressed and the food taking longer. The host staff seems confused and agitated. Too many kids running around to be a bar, too much bar around to be for kids. Management presence also seems to be lacking. I used to love this place, but within the last four months it just seems to get worse every time.

Pros: Decor, Prices, Food

Cons: Service, Food Time

Ratings_icons out-standing

The atmosphere was great T.V.'s everywhere so I didn't miss any of the hockey game. Great selection of appitizers. Huge bar with very reasonable drink prices. Definetley recomend if going there to sit at the bar, outside on the patio, or in the dinning area there's not a bad seat in the house. By the way be careful in the bathroom you don't want to mistake the sink for the urinal. (You'll understand when you see it!)

Pros: T.V., Bar, Staff

Ratings_icons Long wait

Landshut

I attended with a group of about 8 people on a Sunday night and we had to wait about an hour and a half. The food is good, king of spendy. The average sandwhich costs $9 so if you go, go for dinner and get an entree. Drinks are good.

Pros: Atmosphere, Drinks, Food

Cons: Expensive

Ratings_icons Great Atmosphere, Large Portions BUT....

vikespurple

We had the chips appetizer for $8 and it was out of the bag(chips) and out of a can(guacamole). I had fajitas $13 and you get alot but the meat is very grisly. For the $ the portions are big but the quality is POOR. Drink prices were more reasonable. Great flat screen TV's throught the bar.

This was a one time visit for us.

Pros: atmosphere, TV's, Decor

Cons: Food Quality, Prices higher

Ratings_icons EXCELLENT!

esclade

the food was excellent and the staff was helpful and very effecient. There were managers on the floor greeting tables to make sure everything was perfect, thats rare to find a manager not hiding the back room at a reasturant. definitley would recomend for a couple or a group of people wanting to go out and have a good time.
