Hello, I have been to a large number of aquarium / fish shops within the metro and beyond. Recently I went to A World of Fish with a friend who has been in the aquarium hobby for more than 15 years. He told me that it is one of the best aquarium shops in MN.
Upon reading most of the negative posts regarding this store, I was shocked. I've never been to a store that had healthier looking fish, cleaner tanks, and healthier aquatic plants. A World of Fish, has quite a few varieties of fresh water invertebrates and fresh water tropical fish. In fact, I don't think I've seen all of those varieties of creatures in one spot besides the ZOO.
All of us who are in the hobby have viewed all kinds of fish and other aquarium creatures on the internet, and we wish we could find them locally. I've got news for you, you can find nearly everything you were looking for at A World of Fish. I saw a few fresh water tropical fish that i didn't know existed at this store.
As far as customer service they seemed to be very willing to help. I'm not saying that they run up to you when you enter the store, fan you and feed you grapes, but they will help you with fish plants inverts, and give you a wealth of knowledge if you ask. The employees are busy ( always helping, or performing a function) or they have been the last 4 times I've been there.
Overall, the complaints I've been hearing sound frivolous and picky. I loved going and the last time I went I brought my kids and they loved it.

We made the trek to World of Fish for years. Having gotten out of keeping up a tank for the last 6 years because of a move, we quit going. We remember it being a really well run, helpful, professional business. Now we are back into the tank again. Purchased a 350 Magnum system 9/15/11 , we have spent the last week shutting down ponds and getting this up and running for Koi. After reading the reviews on this site, I have resigned myself to the fact they will NOT be returning my call with questions on one bio filter not spinning. Not a big deal really. I can get the info from different sites. BUT, we WERE going to be making MORE purchases there until this nonsense of not answering the phone and not returning calls. The weekend we were there, employees were seen standing around not doing much of anything and talking about how intelligent people seem to be the ones into big tanks and fish..... truly....... Well that "intelligent" help is working to keep the business running like a well oiled machine. And from reading one recent post, either is the owner ! We will have fun checking out the other fish stores :)

At first I was extremely excited about the amount of fish in the shop. However after bringing home 4 blue rams, I was completely dissatified with our experience.
We have a 45 gallon tank with dwarf guoramis, 2 pearls, a school of fish and a clown loche, we also have 3 bottom feeders. All but one ram has died. as well as one of the pearls that we had for 4 months, no disease was in the tank. When I brought the 3 rams back, I was told they would not do anything for me on the pearl as it was not originally purchased from them (even though it died after we introduced their fish to our pristine tank). our other fish look a little less colorful, even after water change, I definately will not be returning and recommend a favorite in F. Lake much more.

The store has a good selection, the staff is knowlegable. However the service isn't as good as other aquarium stores in the area. It is hard to get someone to help. Where other stores they ask you immediately when you walk in.
We bought 4 clown loaches from them and they repeatedly kept dying. They tested our water for us and it was good. We kept bringing back the dead ones and out of 12 fish only 1 lived.
Later I bought 3 clown loaches from a chain store that starts with p and ends with an o. All 3 lived and have thrived for 6 months now.

I love this place. I sometimes go and spend an hour just wandering around and dreaming of possibilities. I went on a Saturday last time and it was surprising not busy. I had every single employee come up as ask if I needed help. Since I only planned on looking around I didn't mind going on a saturday but was still pleasantly surprised at the over flow of help. I went in with an algae problem and was offered pleco's and cory's. I explained what caused the algae what it looked like and that I have a cichlid tank and the female clerk quickly retracted her statement and explained that no algae eater would eat the "beard moss". She suggested I remove the rocks and scrub them and do a larger than normal water change and watch the tank closely.
Customer service came before a sale and I greatly appreciate it. I left without purchasing anything because there was no suitable fish for my need.

On my first trip to world of fish I had purchased a 39 gal tank second hand and wanted cichlids (the current tank I have running) I walked around with a clerk for probably 30 mins while he explained the difference between south american and african and the water ph requirements.

If in doubt, do some research online so you know what to ask for. A clerk isn't going to know if your house has soft or hard water, where in your house you're going to place the tank ect. Be an informed shopper and know the basic questions you want to ask and you'll get fantastic advice and great service.

I like the variety of fish and occasional good deals if you join their club, but the customer service is extremely lacking. Generally, you never get greeted or even acknowledged while you are in this store, and I have stood around for 30 minutes waiting to give them a lot of money, and been ignored. They try not to make eye contact with you so you can't ask them for help when they are free.

Overall knowledge of fish is ok here, as an experienced keeper I don't need help but I've heard a lot generalities thrown around in this place, and they have Siamese Algae Eaters (siamesis) labeled as Flying fox, and they kind of laughed at me when I pointed that out to them.

They have my filter I bought online for $140 advertised for $300, so support them if you want to, but they're overpriced. I'd buy fish from them still, but probably not again after the lack of service they provide. As a businessman it just confounds me.

I have also brought fish home several times to find Ich on them, resulting in having to treat the whole tank.

I had heard that this is a great place to visit. However my experience with them was not what I was hoping it would be. I was looking into adding discus fish to my aquarium. When I asked about these beautiful fish they immediately stated that these were not for a general home aquarium. They stated that I needed to be serious about these because of the demanding commitment. They also added you do not place them with angels. I was almost convinced that I would not be able to own one of these proud beauties. I walked around a bit and noticed one of their aquariums happened to have wild angels and wild discus in the same tank. After seeing this I wondered why they would tell me that I could not place angels with discus and here they were doing that very thing. I questioned 2 other staff and got different responses, all three staff members had different answers, none of them with a reasonable explanation for why they told me one thing and were practicing another. That day I purchased a discus and a jewel cichlid from there, I knew nothing about this fish(jewel cichlid), just thought it was pretty. Light red almost pink with bule spots. I am aware of the aggressive nature of cichlids so I asked a lot of questions. The first staff member told me this was a calm and placid fish and good for community tank, one additional staff member agreed with that statement adding I would have nothing to worry about. I was relieved at that moment, finally the staff agreed on something, so I purchased him!!!! This, however, I learned the hard way, was a serious mistake. Second night of owning him while I slept he dined on his community tank mates. He made my angels fins become half of what they were and ate the legs of my bamboo shrimp and tormented my clown loaches, did not think there was a fish capable of that other than a piranha. Well my angels, loaches, and my shrimp made it through and the cichlid was donated to another fish shop. The discus they sold me developed a sickness and died 6 days after I purchaes him. Now I was really scared about discus but I really wanted these fish. Aftert reading about them on the internet I found much better and more reliable advice about this fish and it comes down to knowing your aquarium and common sense. I added 5 discus over 2 months. 6 months have passed and the angels and discus are doing very well together. I have a very healthy aquarium and my fish do very well. Everything that World of fish told me has been incorrect. I lost $80.00 in fish purchases due to their lack of knowledge or incorrect information they gave me. And anyone who does not know.....JEWEL CICHLIDS ARE VERY AGGRESSIVE AND LOVE ANGEL FISH FINS!!!! Knowledge that the world of fish staff should have know!!!!!!

Saturdays and Sundays are a zoo! Its a challenge finding someone to assist you during the weekends- and the store would do better with a bigger floor space and more people working. The staff is helpful when they're around- be agressive in tracking them down as there is so much activity on Sat's and Sun's. WOF is open till 9P during the week and there are not many customers there in the evening after work. FYI- Thursdays are double stamp day for those with a member card.\r\nIf you need particular fish (such as a specific species of african cichlid)- go during the week when you won't feel rushed.

Pros: Selection, quality and central location

Cons: Parking and lack of staff

The staff is knowledgeable and extremely helpful. They have almost anythign you could need. If they do not have it in stock they can order it. They even offer home service. If you need something custom if they can't build it thay can tell you who can do it for you. No matter what your aquatic intrest they have something for you. \n\nThe store is a little cramped. There is a lot of product in a tight space and the parking lot is small. If you have a large pickup or similar sized vehicle I recommend parking on the street. It is easy to get blocked with larger vehicles.

This is definetely the place to go if you are starting out in freshwater, or saltwater aquaria. Their staff is extremely knowledgable, and have a lot of experience to share with someone who is just starting out in this hobby. They have quite a large selection of supplies and if there is something that you cannot find, they will order it for you. Best of all, they offer Freshwater and Saltwater available by the gallon in case you do not have access to your own unit to fill your aquarium with. They also have a wide variety of special fish to chose from and are located in Richfield on 66th street. Warning, they are not much to look at from the outside, but definitely worth going to!
