My bf and I went to Alma on a weeknight. We ordered a lovely bottle of wine and 3 course tasting. Server never came back to check on any of our food, not one course, until we were finished. I really didn't care for the chicken foie gras

My friend took me here for a special occasion...what a treat! The chefs prepared a wonderful 3 course meal. I remember having foie gras for the first time and loving it. Exquisite and upscale...be prepared for an amazing meal prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Gourmet desserts and contemporary atmosphere polish it off. Higher priced menu. Reservations recommended. See the website below:

Sublime union of cool and comfortable. Ordering from the tasting menu is a ratifying experience for even the most fickle patron. Likewise, is selecting from the impressive wine list. I savored each course, but the crowning glory was the 12 hour beef roast, graced with parsnips, balsamic onions and carrot butter; paired with a French Cab, it was simply divine. The service was excellent. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. I will return to Restaurant Alma again and again.

Wonderful, unusual food. Emphasis on presentation and taste. Small and cozy, but a little noisy. Not child-friendly.

My husband surprised me with a date nite at Alma. It was our first time there. Everything about it from the ambiance, service, and food was outstanding! We both did the 3 course tasting menu. I asked the server to have the chef/bar manager choose a wine pairing for each dish. They put together a lovely smaller portion wine flight that went with each dish beautifully. The lovely Cava sparkling wine upon arrival is classy and festive. Each dish was more interesting and amazing than the last and left us both eager to plan our next date night at Alma. My husband and I both thought the celery root souffle was out of this world. Can't say that I've had a lot of celery root in my day, but the flavors of this dish just reminded us of the comforts of home. We didn't have time for dessert, so they brought me out a glass of tawny port for dessert instead. How cool, is that? Our server was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable and made awesome recommendations. Thank you! Can't wait to go back!

This place is stupendous!

My Boyfriend and I recently went in for the tasting menu. Brian the sous chef recognized us and sent complimentary champagne.

In addition to the tasting menu, he sent out several other morsels gratis.

In all we paid 80.00 for two glasses of wine and 7 courses!

We love alma and if we could give it a 10 star rating we could.

They really know what they are doing there.

My friend and I were really looking to try someplace outside of downtown that we hadn't been to before that was upscale but not stuffy and Alma was just the right choice. The food was good. The service was thorough and it was just a great meal.

A girlfriend and went to dinner at Alma Recently and had just a great experience. the server had great timing and great suggestions, we each did the tasting menu and had her pick out each course. She did a great job, and the food was wonderful, and we had a beautiful bottle of wine and after you buy a bottle from them they waive the corking fee, which was cool. So we enjoyed another great wine from home. A great night all around!

This is by far and away my favourite restaurant to go to during visits to Minneapolis. Incredible diverse menu, fresh local ingredients, portions are perfect, wonderful service and staff. The warm and intimate atmosphere is particularly inviting during wintertime. I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an outstanding dining experience.

Service was uneven but the food made up for it - outstanding! We all tried the tasting menu and everything
was superb. There was a snafu w/ my entree (server forgot to place the order?) so the chef sent a salad
so I had something to eat while my companions had their entrees. After my wonderful entree arrived (Atlantic char), we were treated to a cheese course, gratis. Classy move. Highly recommend - some of the best food in Minneapolis!

My wife and I had the tasting tonight. Nothing wowed us at all. Everything seemd to be a touch on the bland side. They use interesting ingredients, but nothing seemed to be seasoned or flavorful. Our server was the worst part of it. She completely was ignoring us. It took 15 minutes for beverages and she was slow.... No suggestions from her either. She did the classic "are you ready to order" as our greeting.

I tried Alma last Saturaday evening. I was expecting great things but was left with a very bad taste. The waitress or server was perhaps overworked or did want to be at work. Her lack of a intial greeting down to the filling of the water glasses left much to be desired. We had four entrees with a salad. Salad and bread were fine. The entrees ranged from sea food to pork. We should have sent all four entrees back. It is not that they were cold or overdone. It was because the food was excessively salty. All four entrees tasted as if the salt shaker had been dropped on each of the plates. Perhaps this is just a style of preparation or perhaps the staff just made a mistake this night. We made mention of the situation to the waitress and she indicated it would be brought to the kitchen staff attention. On her return to our table she dropped off the check and did not sat a word to our party. I recommend not to visit. There are way too many restaurants that appreciate your business in the twin cities.

Second visit to this restaurant was disappointing. Spent close to $100 w/o dessert or drinks and had a very mediocre entree. At this price point I expect consistent quality.

Great place to relax and enjoy a conversation over a pretty looking meal. But I find the gourmet food too heavy. Even though it's homemade, I wish they offered more healthy versions on the menu for fussy food purists who care about what food does to their figure. I can't see returning.

PROS: Nice atmosphere and service
CONS: High priced

My boyfriend and I were given a gift certificate to try Alma! What a treat! This was THE BEST meal we have had! We had a Valentine's celebration at Alma and it was perfect! The mood is perfect. The wait starff is attentive, but not in your face. The bruschetta was some of the best I've had. Just can't say enough about the taste, quality, portion size and wine list! Thanks "Alma" for a great night and can't wait to dine with you again! J&J

The food and service are fabulous. We had 5 for dinner on a Saturday night, and most had the 3 course tasting menu, which is a good value (basically middle course for free). There was nary a spec of food left on anyone's plate after any of the courses (one of the main dishes-fish-I would have called just average but not objectionable). Be sure to save room for dessert as they are heavenly (molten chocolate cake!). The portion sizes are designed for several courses without making you ill--everyone was content but not stuffed to the gills after the meal. The service was great--we probably had 12 different people touch our table over the course of the evening, taking plates and refilling water glasses.

I have been going to Alma since it first opened and I have NEVER had a bad experience there. I have only received gracious service, never attitude. The food is heavenly, with lots of local seasonal organic love thrown in. TOP CHEFS IN TOWN!

The menu is quite workable. Its great that the menu always has something for everyone and changes constantly. Plus, you dont have to spend a lot of $ to eat well here.

Im now an Alma regular, but even when I had only been there a few times they were always incredible with service.

Ive been given free appetizers, wines, and deserts to try (guinea pig for the future menus!) on numerous occasions. They know I love them & they love me back. It is rare to find a place like this, like a home away from home.

Alas-I wont give up my parking secret though.

Alma has done nothing but gotten better since they opened. Food has always been outstanding, but the service has improved considerably since their much-decried "snooty service" days. Always a great experience. (Parking could use a little help, though.)

Great atmosphere, nice menu and pleasant staff.
Apps were nice, although the oysters were a bit expensive...the chicken liver pate was tops.
Entree's were very nice, good portion sizes, artfully presented and nice complementary flavors on the palate. Desserts were solid.

Had dinner on a Friday night, early. Server was very good - knowledgeable, attentive, but unobtrusive. Had halibut with aromatic vegetables and was cooked well. Partner had roast chicken with butternut squash - yum. Appetizers were butternut squash soup - a little thin, but well flavored and partner's shrimp appetizer was very good. Dessert was a cheese plate with an excellent triple creme brie and chocolate terrine - a bit chalky but good quality chocolate. Wine was a Vacqueyras which went well with food, though a bit acidic on its own. All in all, a great meal. I'd go again. Freshness, service, atmosphere all a plus. Felt very welcomed and relaxed.

The bartender and server were a bit 'on another planet' Also, I was highly highly disappointed in the value of my meal. The Japanese fish entree ran $22-24 and when ordered I received two pieces of fish nary the size of golf balls. Very disappointing as the presentation was nothing special. My husband got the prime rib and that was a very generous portion with lots and lots of flavor...I'd recommend this.
Another disappointment was that the cranberry, pear, apple crumble dessert, was more full of prunes (or were they figs?) than the title fruits! I was a bit shocked...I was hoping to have a dessert bursting with cranberrys, pears and apples. I didn't order a starter salad, although I saw many brought out and they looked good. I'm happy to pay the price for a great meal, however, unfortunately for the price/value, I don't think I'd go back.

Where in the Twin Cities would you least expect to find a culinary treasure like Restaurant Alma? One of my guesses would have been University Ave SE on the west side of 35W!! To be honest, Alma's street parking and the lack of a full bar are their only negatives. The atmosphere is "neighborhoody" and comfortable. The food is outstanding - the duck breast and confit possibly the best I've tasted. I rank Alma right alongside Vincent, although the above-mentioned detractions result in a slightly lower overall score.

The food was very very good. Starters were both very aesthetically pleasing and tasty. The dessert wasn't that great. I would like the restaurant a lot more if our waiter was a little better trained in time and timing management.

He first forgot our order (for just 2 people). It wasn't even a busy night. Later I had to call him over at least 5 minutes after he had dropped off the dessert menu. All the while he had only one other table to service.

The portions were relatively small for the prices. But did I say the food was really really good ? ;-)

I recently visited Restaurant Alma for the first time. We were seated immediately, and our server (Nat) was remarkably patient and knowledgeable about the restaurant, the kitchen, the wine list and what would suit our tastes. The escarole salad with balsamic and white truffle viniagrette was a terrific starter. The seared sashimi tuna was expertly done, and the lemon pudding cake was truly a perfect blend of tart, sweet, smooth and moist. This restaurant is a must for anyone tired of franchises. We cancelled reservations next weekend at D'Amico (our favorite standby) because we thought we'd have more fun here, and because the desserts cannot be beat.

We love Restaurant Alma. My only concern was that they were out of 3 of the daily specials on our last visit. I would understand if it was really late on a week night, but it was 8PM on a Saturday. we managed, but 2 of the specials were fish entrees and some our companions do not eat chicken or beef. Other than that, it is a great place and I hope they keep it up, Just get more fish.
