Also to be noted is the fact that their online menu is inaccurate. Most of the items are $3-4 more than they are listed for. The menu has about half as many options as are listed as

My review is based on a walk-in visit on a Saturday night. I feel it's necessary to post after reading the bad reviews here.

My boyfriend and I rarely make reservations, which often finds us in a bind, especially on a Saturday night in downtown Minneapolis. We set off towards Nicollet Mall to find a place to eat before our play at The Orpheum. Zelo is on the corner and looks interesting, so we walk in. We check with the hostess and they are all booked for the night, BUT... the lounge (bar) is seat yourself. So we find a couple chairs looking out on to the street.

Our server comes over (I wish I could remember her name now), and is as sweet as can be. She asks if we want drinks and suggests their new margarita (which uses grapefruit juice, St. Germain, and pure agave nectar), I opt to try it as I love me a good Marg. This drink was so amazing and refreshing... I had to have two!
After looking over the menu a bit and asking our server what she would suggest, we opt to try out a few small plates and try many things. The food was absolutely delicious!!! The Ahi Tuna on Sesame Crisps ware amazing; flavorful and full of texture with the seared tuna, avocado, and the crunch of the crisps, MMmm!

Again, the food was delicious and our service was above par; attentive, helpful, friendly. We inquired about the St. Germain used in the margarita and she told us about it and even offered a little sample of it. I'd say going above and beyond is a sign of good service.

I love this place and I can't wait to go back!!

Wonderful gourmet food in a beautiful setting. I like this spot for a date with my husband or girls night out. You can dress up a bit and not feel out of place. The service is average as far as speed. There is valet parking available.

Zelos is a great place to go for drinks after work. It definitely attracts a very happening crowd. They also have a great menu and have never been disappointed with my meal. The prices are competitive and their service is always excellent.

I had an absolutely aweful server, and this is coming from someone who used to be a server. I am very understanding of mistakes and forgetfulness, but this server was rude, neglectful (even though she only had 1 other table!), and actually made me and my guest feel like just getting up and leaving. We ended up leaving cash and bolting in silence. Leaving her a VERY SMALL TIP.

Pros: multiple exits in main dining room

Cons: SUPER BAD SERVICE

.

The hostess had attitude.

The server was drunk, and rude.

The food was small on portion.

We started with an appetizer, and the salad was rotten--I mean black and slimy leaves drenched in dressing.

We got a hold of the manager, who apologized, and offered to replace the salad.

We refused.

If they treat their greens so badly on a Friday night why eat there.

We left and ate at the Dakota instead where fresh food is de rigeur on a weekend night.

It is the second time we have tried to eat there and had such rudeness foisted upon us.

That and a drunk waiter.

Gross!

I had a reservation for a small group and really wanted a special place. The ambience was good. Too noisy until some of the people left. The food was good, but the waiter was incredibly aloof. Someone else used the word "snooty"in another review, so I wonder is this is the same person. If you want a place to converse, son't go during peak times. Make sure youask for the non-snooty waiter!

Went to Zelo for our anniversary, every moment was perfect...got sat in a beautiful booth (without having to ask) Wait staff (Jeff) was attentive and friendly. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is in search of a delightful evening.
p.s. order the pesto sea bass, it is amazing!

Even with a reservation, we waited 15 minutes to be seated. The food was average, but you're definitely paying for the atmosphere. Service is very good. It's a very nice-looking place, especially the bar area. On weekends, the bar is so busy it's very hard to get through to the restrooms. I'd go back, but only if I had plenty of time to wait.

Visited Zelo for an 8:30 reservation on a Sat night. The host staff was quite nice and the bar seemed active. We were promptly seated but that is where my compliments end.

Our waiter was extraordinarly slow and had to be prompted to bring our wine, to bring a second menu, to bring the check, he was the antithesis of proactive. He was a bit of snob as well. If you insist on going, do NOT order the beef carpacio, there was so much sea salt on it that I left feeling brined. The bacon and blue cheese salad was nearly soggy and the lasagna was unimpressive. The hanger steak was passable. This is shame because the restaurant has a cool atmoshpere.

I dine at Zelo frequently and am never disappointed. The service is among the best in the twin cities and the food is fantastic. The Ahi Tuna Springrolls are amazing and the fresh seafood is so very good. During my most recent visit I asked my server for wine recommendations and she was very knowledgeable about what paired well with my food. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who has a real appreciation for good food and wine.

My husband and I live in Los Angeles. We are visiting Minneapolis for business. I have warm, wonderful feelings regarding the Twin Cities as my mom is originally from here. We were excited to try Zelo as the concierge at our hotel highly recommended it. We had reservations and walked in the door. We were not greeted at all by the hostesses. We stood there for a while while the lead hostess was busy chatting with two men on their way out the door. We finally said to another woman standing there that we were here for dinner and had reservations. She said something to the effect of "You'll have to wait." We were struck with the fact that were were not even acknowledged and by the overall rudeness. My husband and I ended up dining at McCormick and Schmicks across the street. We were warmly greeted and immediately shown to a fine booth. The food was delicious and every one in the restaurant was "Minnesota nice." My recommendation is to avoid Zelo and go to McCormick and Schmicks right across the street.

My wife and I have eaten here twice. On both occasions we were extremely dissatisfied with the service. The food and ambience was splendid. However, our servers were dreadful; among many things they were slow and rude. We have dined at numerous upscale restaurants and have always had excellent service. Zelo definitely missed the mark.

My fiance & I stopped in on Saturday afternoon for an early dinner. Since we were shopping earlier and dressed casually, we decided to sit in the bar area. We ordered calamari for appetizers, rissoto w/wild mushrooms and a sicilian sausage pizza. The risotto was abosolutely the best I'd ever had and cooked to perfection. (Most places I've visited for risotto can never cook it right, its either still hard or too mushy) The portions were also a good size. The only thing that could have been better was having another waiter in the bar area. It was just the bartender and 1 waiter so he was running around from table to table and seemed kind of flustered. All in all, the food was delicious and restaraunt decor was interesting. Definately will be back for more!

Very rarely do I give a wow when it comes to dining here in the cities. I can say that there was really nothing missing. The service was spot on, and the food was great. I have to recommend the ahi tuna appetizer, and the halibut, although my husband had the fettuccini with asparagus and that was great too. From start to finish, Zelo really impressed us!

The atmosphere at Zelo is just fantastic. Walking in past the bar and into the spacious main dining room, I was thoroughly impressed by the beautiful lighting and paintings. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the seared diver scallops, miso-marinated Alaskan halibut with soba noodles, and the molten chocolate cake with Tahitian vanilla gelato. The service was warm and pleasant. It was truly enjoyable!!!

Overall, Zelo's is a great experience. Lovely food with great wines and a serious drinker's bar. Their cesar salad needs to be greatly improved. The romaine was fine, the dressing was all right, but the parmesan was not fresh and the croutons were minimal. The veal scallopine and the squash, on the other hand were amazingly delicious. Coffee and gelato are always classically tasteful.

My husband and I stopped in for lunch and did not have a reservation. "We can find a table for you in the lounge," and barely find did they. The table was tiny and uncomfortable with so much noise, conversation was nearly impossible. Food - we had salads and soup - barely average. Wood fired chicken? Maybe yesterday and reheated for today's salad. Overall, we both left wishing we had chosen somewhere else.

I just moved to New York City, and haven't found anything here that compares to Zelo in Minneapolis. Everything I have there is absolutely wonderful: the bread, Ensalata Zelo, the pizzas, the pastas, and the amazing cheeseburger. I highly recommend this restaurant for a nice lunch or romantic dinner. There is something for everyone and nothing disappoints.

What a great night!!!! We stoppped by Zelo after a show and did not have reservations. The hostess showed us into the bar area and we had a great meal including Ahi spring rolls, a wild mushroom flatbread, perfectly cooked wild Salmon and a Huckleberry Cheesecake which is the best dessert we've tasted in a long time. The service was friendly, knowlegable and attentive. The whole experience was truly enjoyable and we'll be back soon.

Here's what I noticed: The carpets needed to be cleaned and the wood in the whole place polished. The place was dingy. We were seated at Table 16. The mood-lighting lamp at 16 was broken and had never been replaced. Our waiter was far too busy with everyone else, and seemed rather stressed. The Ahi Tuna Salad was rather good and the strip steak was good as well. Both not a good enough reason to go back. My recommendation if you're all dressed up: skip it and go elsewhere.

Made reservations in advance for a special event. Got the worst seat in the house by the kitchen and hostess refused to give us another. Noise level was intolerable, we had to yell at each other to be heard. The bread was doughy and undercooked. My pasta was poorly spiced. My husband steak and the salad was good. The waiter was rarely to be seen other than to give us our check. VERY disappointing experience. I wrote a letter to the manager and did not hear a word back.

Although I find it infurriating that even though I dine at Zelo weekly, it is difficult to get any special treatment when (as it often happens) drinking cocktails seques into an impromptu urge to obtain a dinner reservation But, I can't complain...the food, ambiance and location are too great to warrant a boycott. If you want to go somewhere downtown that is laid back with wonderful (and consistent) food...call ahead & go to Zelo. If you have been there a million times like me, try the fillet mignon if you haven't already- it is less butter-soaked than Mannys, but just as tasty! Short on cash...order a bowl of the Tomato Basil and ask for a bread basket (less than $8.)

I had been to Zelo a number of times for drinks. Always loved the service, professionalism of the bartenders, and the atmosphere. I finally had a chance to eat there last weekend and again during the week for lunch and was impressed again. The lunch menu is very simple and common, but i few uncommon dishes stand out. The pizza is very good, though the mozzarella could be fresher. Great char on the crust however. The ahi I had was good, not great and the gazpacho was top notch. Our server was fantastic and she was always there when we needed her. All and all a good experience however i could not escape the feeling i was in a REALLY good Olive Garden.

My friend I go here occasionally for lunch. The always ask us if we have a reservation, but we always forget to make one. We usually end up sitting in the bar and it isn't so bad. I enjoy it because it seems more casual. We had a server who was wonderful and explained the item on the menu very well.

I enjoy it because it seems more casual. We had a server who was wonderful and explained the item on the menu very well.

I went to Zelo last night for a special night out with my husband and friends, and we were all blown away by the wonderful experience. The environment is beautiful, the service was exceptional, the food was superb, and the dessert was to die for - Zelo's tiramasu is heavenly! Our entire visit to Zelo was one of the best dining experiences of my life. Bravo!

A wonderfully original dining experience was enjoyed by our party of four. We were seated promptly. The ambience is very unique, a romantic cross in nostalgic, yet neo way. The food was very good, the diver scallops apps melted in your mouth. Service was helpful & prompt without being intrusive. All this on a busy Friday night. Great people watching in the bar area, both inside & out. We left impressed, satisfied and will recommend to others. The menu is Italian flaired, with ample to choose from.

Zelo was an amazing restuarant! The service there was phenomenal. I went to Zelo for dinner before my high school prom. Some of the items on the menu were a little exotic, but our waiter was patient, kind, and honest in explaining the menu choices to us and recommending things that he thought would be good. He wasn't condescending at all, which I really appreciated. An excellent restuarant for anyone who enjoys a good dinner, great service, and a classy atmosphere.

Where can a couple romantically snuggle side-by-side in a leather booth to feast on delicious Italian food? Why Zelo! Get your little black dress on and prepare for some outstanding food, ambience and service. I had an excellent Cosmopolitan with the Prawntons- wonton wrapped shrimp to start. For the entree, my fiance had the liguini nero generously brimming with seafood while I had a taste of heaven, cappellini (little hat pasta) filled with cheeses and butternut squash. This is one of the best restaurants we have been to- buon provecho!

A very nice restaurant one of the places in the cities where you can make an evening as expensive as you want but don't have to break the bank if that doesn't suit you. The menu has an array of pasta's, pizza's, steak's and other entreas. The only complaint would be that the appetizers are overpriced by a few dollars. Other than there were no other problems. Curteous wait staff and very classy but relaxed atmosphere. A good romantic place to dine.

I was so impressed with my whole experience! I took my boyfriend out for his birthday and we had incredible food, and the service was fabulous. We didn't feel rushed or bugged by our server. I highly recommend going there if you want a romantic night out!

I think you are paying for the frills. To feel like you are in a cool hot spot, when you are really crammed into a small space to sit, have to talk real loud over the noisy people and the food is not so extraordinary it just looks that way. Prices reflect the area you are eating in.

The restaurant is elegant and definitely a good date place. The food was very good, but the portions are small and the price was high, so I don't think it's a very good "value", especially if you're hungry! They also need to expand their entree options. They have good martinis - try the key lime. The service was slow - but that was due to the former 80's rockstar sitting next to us who later came over to chat and brought us drinks. The wait staff (and customers!!) were very friendly. The guys next to us gave us some of their dessert! All in all, one of the best times I've had so far in Minneapolis.

This is a great place to go to start a night off in Mpls right. We frequent the bar, where chocolate martini's are made deliciously, and the margarita pizza is mouth watering. The male bartenders seem to bend over backwards for their female customers...they know how to work it!!
