I had one of the saddest, and one of the happiest days of my life in just a week's time. My beloved dog Dharma had to be put to sleep after a long battle with cancer. I had a house full of her things, and it hurt me so much to see it all and know that she would never come back.

A friend suggested I call an animal shelter and offer my supplies. The first one I called never answered my multiple calls and messages. I finally stopped in and they told me they don't take opened bags of food or used supplies!!!! I got discouraged and was talking to a friend, who said why not call the animal rescue in Solway? So I did a little searching on the internet and found WhipStaff Ranch and Rescue. I left a message, which was returned within an hour. They were so kind to me on the phone and I really felt that they cared about me and my dog passing away.

I set up a time to come out and deliver the supplies. They were very thankful and gracious, and I do recall the lady I talked to shedding tears with me too. I met many animals there, all of them were very loved and very well cared for. The place was very clean and was beautifully landscaped. I was really touched that a large portion of the lawn is actually a pet cemetery. That told me that these folks care about their lost friends just as much as I cared about my Dharma. I was amazed at the variety of pets there, from hamsters and ducks to horses and dogs. Every animal is overcoming an abuse or neglect at the hands of people. I saw a horse that arrived at the rescue who had been starved in the winter for 2 months. I commented on how thin she was, and they showed me photos of how this grand lady arrived- I was amazed at the difference! These people work so hard, and do so quietly, with no compensation, and no glory. They help animals because they love them, and no other reason.

While at the rescue I saw a little dog that just pulled at my heartstrings. He was a puppy mill survivor. I couldn't get him out of my mind, and I am glad to say that Benny is now sleeping at my feet and is the happiest dog in the world!! Not only did these people help all the animals that come to them, they saved my Benny from a horrible fate, and have helped me overcome the loss of my dear Dharma.

If you are looking to bring a new friend home, I wholeheartedly recommend these folks. They are wonderful.
