We have been looking for houses in the south metro area for some time now and have seen many builders. After touring 11 DR Horton homes and reading many negative reviews about them online I can confirm that they are pretty much junk. They are very good at making a BRAND NEW home look good, but believe me it's only what the untrained eye can see. I have seen new homes built by them, homes that were 10 years old, and homes that were still unfinished. Their framing is terrible, the foundations are only OK (the most important part of any home), the roofing and windows are almost guaranteed to start leaking after 10 years, and the overall attention to detail simply isn't there. I swear they don't use tape measures and when they use nail guns they must have their eyes closed, it's the only explanation seriously.

Please don't be lured in by their nice locations and low starting prices, after the upgrades you will be paying a lot more, that's how they really make their money.

If you are looking in the Apple Valley, Lakeville, Farmington area these are some good builders ...
Country Joe (my personal favorite for price and real quality)
Ryland
Lennar (everything is upgraded by default, so the starting price is more)
Rongitsch (more expensive)
Mittelstaedt

I really felt I needed to warn people out there, as I have been looking for a long time and have learned a lot in the process. And if you are buying a pre-owned home, be sure to ask who the builder is as most realtors don't factor that into the overall value of the home. Be educated about the biggest purchase of your life and don't let the stress get to you! :-)
