We have been going to Pepitos for 30+ years and it has really gone down the toilet. \r
Pepitos seems to really take their customers and the business that they get for granted.\r
There is an attitude of general disdain toward the customers.

Nice waitress said she worked there 9 years so I asked her recommendation and she said she gets the chili relleno for herself it is so good. Since I love that dish and she confirmed they make them at the restaurant instead of buying them

The food here is DISGUSTING! In a town with lots of Latin food options I am not sure why anyone would eat here. I am been to Pepitos many times and the only time it was good was when I only ate chips and salsa. Last time I was there my Chile Relleno was freezer burnt. The cheese was so old and hard it tasted like a 4 day old mozzarella stick. Nasty. The drinks are weak and watery. And everything is very overpriced. You can go to an authentic place on Lake Street and pay 7.95 for delicious, fresh fajitas. At Pepitos they are upwards of $15! For subpar old ingredients!

My husband and I visited the Minneapolis restaurant this past Monday. It took 50 minutes for our order to get to our table. When it did finally come (we both ordered Ultimate Burritos w/grilled steak), my order was wrong - no beef, only black beans. The waitress was willing to take it back to the kitchen to get it fixed, but we had just finshed waiting 50 minutes to get it in the first place! I told her no, I would just eat it as is but expected to get credited for the price of the entree since it was wrong. She said she would talk to the Manager. She came back and said, that he would only comp our bill 1/2 the price of the entree since I had agreed to eat it! The burritos we did get, were terrible - no sauteed veggies as the menu said. The "grilled steak" looked like 3 day old roast beef leftovers. I told the waitress to tell her Manager, we were very disappointed and that we would not be back. We finished our meal, do you think we saw anything of the Manager? Any good Manager would have come to our table, spoken with us and compted us for at least the entree (how much does it cost them to make it? - $2.00-$3.00). We ended up paying a $65.00 bill (drinks because we had to wait so long) - they made a ton of money off us, but the Manager "Kenny" (as we saw printed on our bill) couldn't even come out to talk to us. No fault of our waitress Samantha. She did a good job, and was just doing damage control that should have been the responsiblity of her Manager. We will never be back, will tell others not to come, and recommend that you not go either.

I ate at Pepitos last night and it was the single most outrageous dining experience of my life. I ordered a vegetarian dish, since I haven't eaten meat in over twelve years. When I bit into it, it was filled with ground beef instead of grilled vegetables! I spit it out and informed the waitress. She didn't so much as apologize for the mistake, instead blaming it on the kitchen staff. After about 10 minutes, I received a vegetarian dish. I ate it -- it was subpar but at least it didn't use to have a face. When the bill came out, I was shocked to see that I hadn't even been given a discount for the mistake. I asked the waitress about it, and she again blamed it on the kitchen staff and told me that the situation was completely rectified by the fact that I did, eventually, receive a vegetarian dish. I asked to speak to a manager. He came out in jeans and a smirk. Again, no apology for the mistake, no acknowledgment of the fact that someone's error caused me to consume a product that I haven't touched in over a decade. He was actually combative, saying things like, "So you want us to pay for your food even though you ate it?" He finally said, "Fine, whatever" and walked away. There are too many great restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul to waste your time and money at a place that treats you to terrible customer service and outright disrespect coupled with food that is mediocre at best. Never again, Pepitos!

Pros: Bar area is always energetic

Cons: Everything else

.

The food is average at best but definitely overpriced. The Margaritas come out of a spicket (unless you order top shelf tequila) and are also overpriced . We used to overlook those things because it was close to home and there were a few bartenders and waitstaff that were really nice and cared about us and their other customers, but we noticed that as soon as those employees seemed to be getting to know folks and other regulars; they were there less and less until they were no longer there at all. What's up with that?( It"s a proven fact that it's those employees who know their customers that keeps the business coming back)
The management is poor and can be downright rude at times. They give you the impression that if you don't like the way they are doing things, don't go there, which is exactly what we are going to do after being regulars there for the past 3 years.
I can say that I am happy that they bought and reopened the Parkway Theatre. They have good movies, shows and events there, and real butter on their popcorn. Other than that, I wouldn't recommend Peptios to anyone and would go as far to say find another Mexican Restaurant to go to. There are plenty more out there with better, more authentic food, prices and management .

Funny enough, the time previous to my last visit I claimed I would never return. I was convinced to make a return by a friend and found myself repeating myself - NEVER AGAIN.

Let's see, I ordered a drink in the bar prior to dinner only to be told to wait. I did so for 15 minutes while the "bartender" clumsily tried to get drinks for dinner patrons. When I asked him when he might find time for me, he actually yelled at me in front of everyone. After explaining that he asked me to wait and that I had done so patiently, he lost his mind and essentially challenged me to "get out of his face." This is par for the course at Pepito's. The owners and staff believe they're above the most simple rules of running a restaurant and bar. Avoid like the plague.

First off, I would like to point out the FAKE reviews, funny how that works with CRUMMY places to eat. I suggest Reading the bad reviews before eating there. The "family" run business has horrible management, no wonder.... the family runs it or RUINS it. The food is over-priced, not authentic at all... The service is just as crummy. I would suggest eating at home and making a cheese taco... or chips and salsa, because thats what your paying $30 for at Pepitos. Not to mention waiting an hour and then speaking to incompetant managers. Not even worth one star.

I've been to Pepitos several times, always with friends or family who highly recommend it. I'm always leave more disappointed than the last time.

I can forgive a mexican restaurant for not being authentic. I can't forgive them for having bland food with no spice or flavor. I'm pretty sure the enchillada sauce has no chili's in it, the "hot salsa" is more mild than the medium old dutch we have at home. If there were good flavor to the food I could forgive the lack of spice, but in mexican food the chilies provide a lot of the flavor.

They have also begun to nickel and dime. Most of the entrees don't come with rice and beans, so you need to automatically add $2.50 to the price.

Until this last time I've always recieved good service, this time we asked the waitress to split the bill when we first arrived, she didn't. We had to wait about 5 minutes to flag her down and ask her to split it, and she argued with us, saying "it's a lot of work for me to do that, how about you just tell me how much you each want to pay". Since the 18% tip was included in the bill I guess she didn't want to do her job.

Please, don't go to this restaurant. When people realize that this place isn't any good the neighborhood will undoubtedly sustain a good restaurant in its place.

Pepitos has the worst service in town, the highest prices for a "Don Pablos" and the worst Management and "Family Business" around all of Minneapolis. White Castle is better than this dump!!!!

Every time I go here and meet friends for dinner I kick myself, I totally love the 48th and Chicago area, I just think that Pepitos stinks The food is super average, the drinks are expensive and just ick.... However the movie theater that the same guy owns next store is SUPER cool, great real popcorn, they have leather couches down front and they always play great offbeat flicks

They now make you pay for soda refills and salsa. Seriously, just raise your prices 25 cents. It feels like you are being nickled and dimed and the manager does not really take constructive criticism well, even from neighborhoodies like us. About a month later, we ordered take out. Specifically asked for hot and mild salsa. we picked it up, brought it home and No Salsa. Called back and they said that the hostess who took the order does not make mistakes, so we were free to drive back there, pay 50cents and purchase more salsa. No apology. Bad customer experience all around, dissappointing because we love the idea of local neighborhhod places.

Pepito's: average
Citysearch star rating: ZERO stars

If you look at the heading, Pepito's gets an "average" of four and a half stars. I was immediately suspicious after seeing ELEVEN one-star reviews out of a total of 54, so I did the math, which revealed that Pepito's rated a REAL average of less than 3.3 stars, about what it deserves. Why the huge discrepancy? Just realize if you're looking for authentic Tex-Mex, you're not going to find it here. And like other reviewers said, steer clear of the overpriced, watery margaritas.

It's been over a decade since I've been to Pepito's, so I was worried about some of the reviews I read here. We decided to give it a try and were glad we did! We weren't on a budget, but there was a good choice of prices on the menu. The two tacos could feed a small family for $7.50. The enchilada was so stuffed with chicken it was a meal in itself, but I had to also finish the relleno as it was EXCELLENT! My vegetarian daughter loved her choices.
The margaritas were marvelously mediocre and WAY overpriced.
We could have been more frugal with our menu choices and drinks but it was still only $23.00/plate with generous tip for server ( great service at 9pm sat.) and valet.( definite bonus on a sub-zero night!)

I have been to the place twice. On both occasions, I have walked away with the distinct feeling I paid too mush for too little. I am not absolutely sure, but the liquor was left out of my Margaritas BOTH times. I drink approximately twice a year and I felt NOTHING after drinking two of the largest one. As for the food, it stinks. The salsa is runny tomato sauce with spices...no onion, peppers or tomatoes. The say they have large enchiladas and this is NOT true at all. They are not tiny, but I would not call them large. The first round of chips and salsa is free. If you want more, you pay and pay too much. The title says they are "Tex-Mex." I do not believe the understand the phrase or they would not call themselves this. Atmosphere is ok if you sit in the resturant area. The bar area stinks if you want to sit down and eat dinner. The ONLY thing good about this place is that someone will park your car for free.

Furthermore, the food here is NOT spicy. I have no idea where the person who wrote the review for this place has been or is from. But, THAT is NOT spicy food...especially if you are going to call yourself "Tex-Mex." The food was basically bland for Tex-Mex. Do not waster your time going here if you are seeking good Tex-Mex or Mexican food. They will not serve it to you.

I don't understand why this place is so popular because I'm not going back. I might as well start with the low point of the evening. We went to the bar after being told we'd have to wait 20 minutes for a table (it took over an hour), and paid $8.25 each for margaritas. What we got was a pint glass with crushed ice, no alcohol, and nothing resembling margarita flavor. It wasn't even the right color, just ice with some non-descript liquid in it.

While still waiting for a table, we wanted to order beers to experience some form of flavor. At one point there were five staff members talking at the bar, but nobody would acknowledge us to take our order. After we finally sat down, the only positive was that we had a respectable server. However, the food was bland, and didn't even come with side dishes. The salsa was the only thing that had anything resembling spices in it.

Anybody who thinks this is good Mexican food should just go back to enjoying their hot dish.

I've been coming to Pepito's off and on since they opened, decades ago, and have lived in the neighborhood since 1999. I loved Pepito's in the '80s, but by the early '00s they had slipped badly. Read some of the reviews below for a sample. Filthy floors and booths, poor food, slow service, etc. I am happy to say that in the past year or two there has been a marked improvement and pepito's is back on its game again. Not yet perfect but not coasting on their reputation anymore. Prices aren't bad, they're similar to other South Mpls Mexican restaurants. The service is markedly better. I had almost given up on Pepito's but now will happily return.

Two years ago, I moved to the block next to Chicago Ave. where Pepitos is located. All summer, I have watched cars zoom down the alley at not only an unsafe speed, like 20mph, but like 30mph. After a while, I recognized these young guys as the valet drivers of Pepitos. When I called to speak with the manager, I told him, and he said you should've called earlier if you've been seeing this happen all summer. When, I said that if they don't slow down, I will spread negative publicity. His response, was "Oh really, well, you do what you need to do." Then he hung up on me. Trust me, I was not disrespectful during our phone conversation, I am a young hard working born and raised Minnesotan proud of the Twin Cities, and go out of my way to support local businesses. I have neighbors that have gone over to Pepitos to let them know about the speeding valet drivers driving YOUR cars so this is not news to them. They do not care about members of their own community! Please let this business know that you won't tolerate disrespect toward hard working community members just trying to keep their children and dogs safe. Now I know why I never see any of my neighbors up there. If you are new to this restaurant, my opinion is that the food is greasy. When I moved here, I honestly was surprised at how busy it can be for 1. The food, 2. The service - I have tried time after time to give them chances, I mean, how convenient to walk my alley across the street to a restaurant, right? Each time, I walk away thinking the service is sub par at most. 3. Once while in the bar, I saw a m***se. Granted, this can happen at any restaurant. If you decide to go try this restaurant, I would ask that you pay attention to the level of service and consider what I've said about their repeated attitude toward people that really want to support local businesses. Please put yourself in our shoes, and think about how you would feel in a similar circumstance.

Pros: Fairly Inexpensive

Cons: Rude Management, Waitstaff is not as good as the restaurant's current 4.5 rating

If you are new to this restaurant, my opinion is that the ambience of the neighborhood is unbeatable. If you decide to wait for a table, put your name in and walk around to the shops. Even grab a beer at the neighborhood pub. However, I think the people that wait outside for a table on weekends are crazy. Growing up this was a destination spot for me. They used to have a quaint patio, good service and I loved the food. Now I live in the neighborhood and I honestly am surprised at how busy it can be for 1. The food, 2. The service - I have tried time after time to give them another chance. Each time, I walk away thinking the service is sub par at most. Maybe it's because I've traveled as an adult and my taste is more discriminating, but the food just tastes greasy and fried. Oh and did I mention the stories I've heard and experienced myself about the chips and salsa? Sometimes you get chips and salsa, sometimes you're charged, sometimes you're charged for the second basket. It isn't the worst service I've ever had, but it is the most consistently poor service. Do not expect a dining experience. Yes, the food comes out reasonably fast, but that's just it, they're slinging food. You will not have proactive service or service with a smile. It often feels chaotic. Now, when I am in the mood for good Mexican food, I go out of my way to El Loro or Teresa's. Much better quality, value, and service.

I have eaten at MANY mexican restaurants and I feel that Pepito's is one of the best. The quality is good and is reasonably priced. Plus you get free chips and salsa with your meal. Awesome.

So I just read some of the reviews and I strongly disagree. I've been going here for years and I love the place! The chicken flautas are amazing and I love the chips and salsa, it's the only salsa in minneapolis without cilantro! Yes the prices have gone up but prices have gone up everywhere, no it's not authentic but hello, it's TEX-MEX!! People need to raise prices to stay in business and if you like a business you should support that. I love the food and the peach margaritas are yummy. I love it!!

The food was disgusting--my refried beans tasted like overly salty baked beans from a can. Watch out for the waitstaff--their helpful questions (would you like sour cream with that? would you like your burrito enchilada style) are just attempts to make the bill higher. They charge you extra for every little thing, definitely not what I call good service.

Pepito's has a few good things going for it - it's family owned, located in a neat part of Minneapolis and it has a fun atmosphere. I can't say many good things about the food - we've met there for several on several occasions with our group of friends and nobody has ever been particularly impressed by the food. However the chips and salsa were pretty good. Service has been unpredictable - sometimes they're helpful and funny - one server even advised me to stay away from the chicken mole which I planned to order (which I didn't!). Overall I think it's a fun place to go with a group and has a fun, busy atmosphere. However, if you're on a mission for good Mexican, Tex-Mex, Minnemex (or whatever you want to call it) - Pepito's is only about average.

Let me first state that my wife and I are fond of Pepitos and we live in the neighborhood. This afternoon we decided to stop in for a late lunch and sit outside being that it was a beautiful day. My wife ordered a Mexican BBQ Pizza... which we have many times in the past. She found it entirely too spicy and could not eat it. I tasted it as well and as I like hot spicy food, this was too much. We told the server about it and after disappearing for at least 10 minutes, she returns and stated that her manager would only authorize a $3 discount, a $10.85 item. Server then stated that there have been alot of complaints lately and they have changed the Pico de Gallo, but still couldn't do anything more about it. We simply told her that this has already dictated the future. We chose not to tip and told her that Pepitos has her $7.85 tip. We will give one of our favorite restaurants a break for at least 8 months to see if anything changes.

Simply put, you shouldn't serve bbq sauce on fajitas or offer pasta salad as a side to go with it. If you've ever been to a real, family style Mexican restaurant, you'll be shocked at how bad this place is. This restaurant would be out of business within a week in most other cities.

Overall I think this a great place to go out and have a good Tex-Mex meal.
The food is really quite good and they've large portions. I love the atmosphere with outside dining, cozy indoor seating, live music on some days and free valet parking. The service we've had has always been good.
The first set of chips and salsa is free, but yes you have to pay if you want extra portions.
The only drawback I noticed were the drinks are very pricey. Expensive, with one regualr size glass of Dos Equis costing more than I can purchase an entire 6 pack at the store.

Honestly, I really can't figure out why people love this place. It's always ALWAYS packed. The food is nowhere near authentic or even particularly good. It ridiculously expensive, and every time I go there, it gets MORE expensive. Instead of printing up new menus they just put little pieces of tape over the prices so they can continue to raise them occasionally with minimal effort on their part. They've even started charging for chips and salsa! What kind of a mexican restaurant charges you for chips and salsa? The only thing they have going for them is that they have the only full bar in the neighborhood. The prices at the bar are generally pretty ludicrous except during happy hour (3-6 on weekdays) when you can get a mediocre margarita for $3.75. Would somebody please tell me why this place is so popular?

I was at Pepito's last week and they have changed the chip/salsa policy. Your first basket is free and additional are $0.75. Not my favorite policy, but not that big a deal. The last reviewer stated there's a charge for valet - it's actually free but can be slow to retrieve your car depending on the night.

If you call when you're on your way to the restaurant they'll put your name on the list so it's a shorter wait once you arrive. Don't miss out trying different things on their menu - the Mexican Pizza and stuffed pepper are both awesome and things you wouldn't necessarily try.

I have been going to Pepitos for several years and have never had bad service or bad food. The restaurant is small and on the weekends there is usually a lengthy wait; the wait is well worth it though. The food is flavorful and generous in portions. The prices are very fair and competitive. This is a fun dining experience; I would recommend it highly.

As of March 06, you have to ask for chips with salsa and it cost 75¢ per basket. Paying for them is sorta lame. Otherwise, the food is good and comparable with other Mex restaurants such as La Cintia's on 61st Nicollet and Chevy's. The place is a little older feel to it and not always the cleanest, but that's part of the ambiance of it I guess. Service always been very good. Expect to pay about $10+ per person. Parking is lacking and may have to walk a block or two to car. They have "Valet" in the evening for a charge and clogs up Chicago Ave at times. Go about 5 blocks north and the area starts to go downhill and not so safe... The bar attached to the restaurant is dumpy though and needs some flair to make it worth staying...

Pepitos Mexican Resteraunt is a friendly no frills place to eat. It is inexpensive and the portions are huge which are two very good things. There is nothing showy about its dining room but you will be confortable. The food is solid if unspectacular but always tasty. If you are looking to satisfy a Mexican craving without hurting the pocketbook too much are having to dress up than check Pepitos out,

Out of all the mexican restaurants that I have been to in town, Pepito's is my favorite! I usually get the same thing; which I am blanking on right now. Salsas and sauces are great! Free tortilla chips could use some work. Maybe try some homemade ones! Oh yeah, just say no to the fast food verson of Pepito's.

My husband and I went our first date here, March 18th, 1990:). My husband grew up in the neighborhood and it has always been one of their favorite hangouts. We go back all the time. We love the atmosphere, the food (Love sunday brunch), people watching. We have 3 kids and they love going to eat here. I love the taste of their food and have always had wonderful staff waiting on us. It is crowed alot but worth the wait.

I have been going to Pepito's Sunday brunch for years. The food is wonderfully warm and gooey, spiced just right. I am not a big fan of mole sauce or weird sausage and the food here is just right. There is a large variety to satisfy most tastes and it is a good value. I have never had bad service, maybe a bit slow, but never rude or dismissive. If I have to have one complaint it would be their coffee, it is way too strong. The people watching is great too. Many families and older people come to brunch so it is a bit loud at times.

Tried to eat at Pepitos for the first time around 8:30 PM last night. Walked in the door and the cashier ignored us while chatting with others. Not a word, no be with you soon - finally seated over 5 minutes later by a waitress who put us in a super cramped table right by the kitchen even though there were plenty of open seating. Ignored for another 10 minutes before walking out - for good. We were excited to have such a highly rated mexican restuaurant in our new neighborhood, but with treatment like that.....

Pepito's is some of the worst mexican food I have had. Pepito's pales in comparison to fast food mexican establishments and chain restaurants. The salsa is a slight variation of a bottled hot sauce. The food is ridiculously overpriced. I even noticed American cheese in my burrito. Last time I checked, American cheese isn't a major ingredient in Mexican fare. Save your money and stay away from Pepito's.

the service, unless you are a regular, is incredibly horrible, unless they purposely understaff. Gum-smacking (so gross), overworked and they'll let you know it. Sabroso's in Shakopee is far superior, and well worth the drive.
