We have been going to Dr. Gilgenbach for 10 years. The care he and his staff have given our dog and our cat (before she died) were top rate and compassionate. I have read the other reviews on this website and I can understand how it might be unusual to have to be quiet while the exam or treatment are being administered. I have seen the benefits of this "silent treatment" and I have never encountered a group of people who care more for animals. Doc has been nothing but professional and kind to my wife and to me. They have never performed an unnecessary procedure and always take the time to explain what they are doing and answer any and all questions we have had. I would not hesitate to recommend Doc to anyone I know and have done so already with nothing but good results and positive reports back from the people who have gone there. I can only assume that some people don't like to be questioned when it comes to their pets and in all honesty if you need a choke chain to control your dog then you already aren't doing something right no matter how much you believe you are like Cesar Millan. He never uses a choke collar. So stop crying and listen to what other people are saying and you might actually find a better way to take care of your pet.

I notice that the Dr. is for the animals and that is the way it should be. He will give sympathy to the animal before an idoit owner. I have to give him credit because my animals best interest are always first and that is an excellant vet. I have been going to Dr. G for 7 years and always have been treated professional and my animal has received excellant care.

Dr. Gilgenbach is honest, friendly and caring. He has been my vet for 15 years, with going on my 5th dog that he has been a doctor to. He always makes an appointment for me even in an emergency, at the last minute. He cares about me and my dogs. When I have been sick he has offered extra help. He has gone above and beyond just a vet. He has been a true friend and someone I trust with my animals. The staff he has working for him goes above and beyond as well. I would recommend him to anyone, at anytime, for any health concern they have with their animals.

We had just moved to Elk River and our dog was having some adjustment issues from the stress. I also was really stressed out because I do care about my dog and was looking for some help. I didn't get it here. Really I should have refused to pay because I left the place in tears but in my panic to leave the place I just paid.

They have a definite philosophy here regarding dogs and will not tolerate anything that deviates from it. One example I had never encountered before is that they required that the room be quiet while the exam was going on and that we not look at the dog as that would be stress inducing. I didn't have a problem with this part, but I think it illustrates that this isn't your normal vet.

The real problem started when I got a patronizing, insensitive lecture from the Dr. Gilgenbach about my failings as a dog owner because I don't use a gentle leader. He asked if I had used one before and did I know how to properly use one since I said I found it ineffective (let me say that my dog walks along beside me quite nicely and I don't need to use two hands to control him - think the Dog Whisperer and that's the way I lead him- not cruelly).

Literally, I was in tears at the fact I had brought my dog in looking for some help to why my dog was pooping in the house and instead I got no help and only a good stern reprimand from some mean spirited man incapable of human empathy. If this vet does not like what you say to him, he will stare you down trying for intimidation. It was the most uncomfortable feeling and I've never had that kind of customer service before. The kicker was when I left in tears and he looked at my dog with such sympathy, like he felt sorry the poor thing had to go home with me! Please spare yourself the humiliation of visiting this place.

Obviously this is a man that has compassion only for animals and not people. Upon seeing my dog wearing a choke collar he waited a minute or two before asking if I was aware of the gentle leader and I said that I was but that I didn't like them. He looked at me for a solid ten seconds, no blinking, and no smile, just pure disgust in his eyes. He said nothing until asking 20 or 30 seconds later if I just bought the gentle leader at a store. I said yes and then he said well, I didn't get correct instruction like from a vet. Okay. I get that he thought the gentle leader was the way to go and that a choke collar is considered abusive by some. But if he really wanted to change my practice wouldn't a better approach have been one of compassionate education rather than what I received. The disgusting look he gave me just made me feel that I had made a horrible mistake by coming. Here is a man that judged me as a bad dog owner and treated me with disdain and uncaring for the rest of the visit. I wish I would have left right then, instinct told me to, but I thought I should just stay since we were already there and they had taken the stool sample and I wanted help.

I went to the clinic on rather short notice after having moved to Elk River recently and not wanting to drive to the old clinic (big mistake). Our dog has been having some difficulties adjusting to the move and having mishaps in the house. Although I thought it was most likely stress I wanted to rule out a physical problem. This has been a stressful situation for the whole family so the appointment was made the same day - I had no time for a babysitter, that's how urgent I considered the situation. But I really wish I had saved myself the indignity of ever encountering this clinic or this man.

I have however learned a valuable lesson in that I will ask ahead of time the practices of the clinic as I think that might have influenced my decision. The philosophy of the clinic is to have the animal on the table facing a wall, not seeing who is doing the exam while everyone remains silent. I believe at the end his assistant gave my dog a prolonged hug but I can't be sure. It was all very compassionate toward my dog. However, there was none for me. I didn't feel I could question him after a while because of the first long, silent, "you're a disgusting dog owner" look he gave me and continued to give me. Eventually I just started crying not because he was and is a bastard but because it was a complete waste of my time, energy, $. Do not go! If you are doing anything at all that they disagree with they will not gently explain another way, but force feed their condemnation of you through the whole visit. Even when I broke down crying and said he had been horrible he had nothing of compassion or apology to say to me, but gave my dog a hug like he felt sorry the dog had to go home with me! It really was one of the most humiliating and degrading experiences of my life because I was looking for help. He owns the place so no one else could offer me compassion either. There are definitely people out there that loathe humans and he is one of them.

When we moved here, my dog needed a rabies shot, he had a check-up recently but was sick at the time so they didn't give him the rabies shot, $30. Well Amvet was willing to do just the shot (unlike some vets who insist that a whole check-up be done first), however they were they insensitive. It was obvious they were willing to do the shot because they were trying to drum up some net profits. Like the car salesman that charges you for things you don't need because he knows you're not likely to be a repeat customer based on the quality of his work. My dog had a couple of lumps under his skin, one of which I didn't know about. It was rather large, they talked about it as if it was the last donut on a plate & they were deciding who gets it. I pictured vultures diving for cash. They started telling me that he needed an operation, blah, blah, blah. I didn't hear most of it cause I was in shock as to their complete lack of bedside manner. They handed me a bunch of information on surgery, & told me to call them. I went to another vet, and he said it was just a fat deposit on an older dog...

PROS:
CONS: seem to be focused on the bottom line, rather than quality care
