I have been going to Fort Road for 24 years and I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. He has been there every step of the way with the many cats and several dogs that I have owned. He knows his stuff and doesn't have to do all the extra testing that other vets try to put you through. His rates are NOT higher than others---and I've lived in various parts of the Twin Cities and have done my research! His staff is professional and very quick to help. If you want a lot of cooing over your pet, go elsewhere....this office is about getting you in, getting your animal treated, and getting you on your way. They are sensitive to my pets' needs, their fears, their pains, and my anxieties....I travel 40 miles to get to Fort Road and although I have looked at other places that are closer to home, I always decide the trip is worth it and no one else knows the health of my kitties like Mark. One night my cat stopped breathing---I was forced to take the cat to an emergency hospital where he was put on a machine for the night. The next day I was told about all the meds he would need to learn to live with his asthma----the cost was staggering. I called Fort Road at 10 a.m. and Mark dropped everything to help me, get my cat looked at not only by him, but by a vet at the U of M....by 3:00 that afternoon the kitty was back home, feeling better, and managing his asthma requires very little care, and no medicine. If it wasn't for Mark Goodell, I would have had to put the cat down because I couldn't have afforded what the other vet was telling me I was going to have to do. I will never go to anyone else but Fort Road.

Several years ago my do had an obstruction (where she ate a few foreign objects) She didn't pass them right away but Mark assured me they would pass. Well they didn't, by the time he did surgery she was so weak she didn't survive the recovery. I blame myself for trusting him and not taking her to another Vet. I will never make that mistake again.

I've been taking my animals to see Dr. Gooddell for atleast 20 years. He's very nice and knows his stuff while his staff all knew my dogs named and cared about them too. My cat which was an outside cat lived to be 22 years old and my two dogs (chihuahuas) lived to be atleast 15 until they got sick with a heart condition that chihuahuas are known to get. I now have 2 new dogs and i still go to Dr. Gooddell and always will.

We had been going to fort road animal clinic for years. We brought every pet to this place. At first, everything was ok because it involved simple check-ups and shots. Then, our dog Nickie started to get sick, her paws were dry and cracking, and she had some dry spots near her nose and eyes. We brought her to the clinic, and they made it seem like it was our fault she was like this, because we didn't bathe her enough. They ended up giving us medicine, and told us to put some cream on her paws. After a few weeks of her not getting better, we took her to a different vet, but it was too late. The other vet had said the medicine they gave her was for a bladder infection, which she did not have. They did testing on her dry spots, but her immunsystem was shoot, and we had to put her down. If we would have went to this doctor in the first place, we probably would still have our dog to this day.

We have been taking our animals to Dr. Goodell for almost 3 years now on a friend's recommendation. What I like about him is that he is a bit more "country vet" than city vet. He always lets us know what our options are for treatment, including the most extreme (expensive) options, but he is pragmatic about quality of life issues and understands that not everyone will spend thousands to keep their elderly cat alive when they are suffering. He is careful, however, to make sure the correct decision is being made when confronting life/death issues. We have lost 2 pets in the last couple of years, and his counsel was honest and non-judgemental.

When we first started seeing him, our boxer had a tumor removed from her foot. At our last vet, she had a similar procedure done and it cost us $1500.00, so imagine my surprise when we received a bill for only $500.00 from Dr. G! He is a a wonderful vet at a great value.

I had been going to Fort Road Animal Clinic for about 2 months. I made numerous appointments. Mark was trying to get a handle on my dogs health on a ailment with his skin. He assumed it was an allergy. He treated it as that. After the first visit I had made about 3 appointments and my dog was not getting better. I spent about 550.00 on all those visits. On a day I could not get my dog into his office, I took my dog to a different Vet. That Vet diagnosed him with sarcoptic mange and treated him. The regiment took 2 weeks to get some progress. Not to mention only 49.00 dollars for the visit and then 80.00 for the prescription. For 129.00, my dog is now moving forward to recovery and I am releived I have a answer. Some maintenance needs to be done. My dog suffered for 2 months when he did not have to. Mark Goodell's office was expensive because he did not want to admit his limitation on knowledge of diseases. He maybe o.k for vacinations and a neutering but other ailments he is not very good. I can see what people mean he is expensive. It's not his standalone pricing. its the fact of numerous appointments because of misdiagnosis that gets expensive.

After reading the reviews I thought I would give the benefit of the doubt. 3 weeks ago I ran into paying 150.00 and honestly never was told what he was doing till done. Then walked out and paid right away, was surprised about the price, not to mention I really do not know what he did. My dog was still ill till I brought him else where. My dog was barking when there so the Vet did not really touch my dog. The reviews that are positive maybe true but so are the bads ones. I did end up paying him for no cure and had to shell out more money to a vet who actually knew what was wrong. I do want to mention the vet at fort road did not know what was wrong, but gave medicine anyways. Pretty much a let down for my dog and me.

I having been using them as my veterinary clinic for years. They are well priced, provide a clean clinic, and have the understanding and patience that other clinics have not shown me. The staff is kind and personable, they are willing to help in any way they are able. Most of all, my animals love them! We especially adore Gus the house kitty.

(RE: Comment below)
Also, sometimes people are quick to say things that are negative...for example, Angie the receptionist is new at Fort Road Clinic, maybe she was unsure of what you needed or wanted. I've dealt with her several times and she has always been compassionate of my animals needs. Just thought I would add that after reading the comment below. Dr. Goodell is a quality vet and he and his staff run an inviting clinic. Call and see what you think!

I've been using Fort Road Animal Clinic as my vet for years. I've always been satisfied with the cleanliness and presentation. In my experience they are well priced. The staff is personable and cares about my animals and their health. They know their clients by name, and patients as well! It is nice to walk into a place and feel welcomed by a simple greeting and without stating your name, they know who you are! Most importantly my animals love the staff and doctors, and vice versa. I highly recommend their services. Give them a call, they would love to meet you and your furry friends!

PS Angie the receptionist is new, give her a break Mr. Negativity

I ran across this profile 2 weeks ago and I just had the feeling that people are being mislead. Whether honest people believe Mark Goodell is good for thier pet or the office is writing the reviews I don't know. This was my experience with Fort Road Animal Clinic. I wished I had a computor at the time of my visit with Fort Road Animal Clinic or I would of wrote this earlier. I did bring my cat to Mark Goodell 2 years ago and I will not do it again. I do remember it was hard to get an appointment and when I did, Mark did not say alot of what was wrong and just gave a prescription. At that time when I attempted to make an appointment after a month or so and mentioned my cat was still sick, the staff on the phone seemed uninterested. I did end up going to another Vet and now that Vet retired. Since it is impossible to ignore bad experiences. I think it important to know the truth that Mark Goodell has some fallbacks.

I have been taking my pets to Dr. Goodell for over a decade. I used to live close to his office, but now drive over 45 minutes because I think he is worth every minute of the inconvenience. He truly cares about our pets. We have solved many problems over the phone and he has gone out of way to help us when we faced serious decisions about our pet's care.

That is what I think a good vet is for- anyone can give a shot, standard treatment but for me it is about who you can trust with a member of your family when facing a complex or serious health issue.

He has given us great advice on "special needs" dogs we have adopted. Some of the problems have been behaviour based, some based on need for surgery or treatment of a complicated problem- where it is difficult to even get to a diagnosis. He is no-nonsense and WILL NOT over-treat your animals, a problem I have found on the few occasions that I had to bring a pet into an emergency clinic or local vet due to some special circumstance.

I have always found him to give us all our options, have trusted his advice and wouldn't even consider taking my "furry kids" to anyone but Mark. He is a rare gem and a compassionate, caring human being. I am grateful that we have him.

I just read the previous negative review on Fort Road Animal Clinic and would just like to say that I have never had that type of experience with Mark Goodell (and I've been taking my pets there for almost 10 years). Unlike other vets that I've seen over the years, Dr. Goodell has always been the most honest and straight-forward. I've had other vets suggest expensive tests for a skin rash my dog had and Dr. Goodell quickly determined it was just an allergy to her plastic food bowls - no prescription, no testing, problem solved. Another time, a different vet wanted to perform expensive xrays on my dog who had been limping and Dr. Goodell suggested that he may just be cramped up in his kennel and needed to stretch out more. Again, problem solved - no xrays. I have NUMEROUS stories like this. Dr. Goodell even gave me a free pair of quality nail clippers and showed me how to clip my dogs nails, so I wouldn't need to bring him in there and pay to have it done. Also, unlike mosts other vets, they don't charge an office visit fee for vaccinations. Dr. Goodell is GREAT and I highly recommend him.

There are many types of people and some may accept certain things. This morning Mark's office showed no professional interest in my dog after my first appointment 2 weeks ago. The problem was two weeks ago from today he gave my dog a shot, did not tell me what it was nor did he write down what it was on the chart, basically he wrote "shot" not at any time did he ask me if my dog was allergic to anything, he just gave him a shot without asking or telling me. He said in a quick short sentence. "That will take care of everything" I then ask him what was wrong with my dog, he said it was an allergy and left it at that. I tried to get him to elaborate but he basically detoured the conversation to the shot, pills and ear drops. So I left and did what The Dr said with the two other medicines he prescribed. I want to mention he looked at my dog very little, nor did he check his ears or do a skin tests. Today I called Dr Mark's office in the morning to possibly talk to the Mark or make an appoinment. When I mentioned my dog was not getting better the receptionist suggested to bring my dog somewhere else. I then called a Vet in another city. I then called Dr Goodell's office and had them fax my dogs info from his chart. At that time I found out that the Dr Goodell did not put what type shot he gave my dog. Dr Goodell is a questionable Vet and really does not follow through very well, not to mention care about his regiments he starts with a pet. The receptionist is very impersonal and knew I was unhappy and made no effort to accomodate me and my dog. Somehow i felt it was my problem. I looked to this office for a remedy or a hope for a remedy. That I did not get.

Pros: right off highway

Cons: expensive, minimal results for major sickness

.

Mark Goodell is more expensive than most. High volume of repeat visits after first intial. Very common to look quickly without touching animal and prescribe medicine. Angie the receptionist has no empathetic communication skill or urgent understanding of medical conditions or value on what Mark has been treating your pet for. Mark provides no prescriptions or after care via phone if needed, he prefers in house visits which is more expensive. The Fort Road Animal Clinic is not recommended for your pet if you want a primary vet, reasonable Vet prices, first time healing results and empathy from the staff.

Mark Goodell has the soul of an old time vet that genuinely cares about the well being of animals and the people that love them. Having recently had to let go of 2 animals and nurse a third back to good health, I could not have done so without the guideance, support and kind words from Mark and his staff. Mark goes the whole nine yards, treating the entire family and I was fortunate to have met him.
Thanks!

For well over 15 years now, Dr. Goddell and staff have been providing excellent care for all of our family pets. Even after moving more than 20 miles away, we still bring our family pets to the Fort Road Animal Clinic. They care and it shows!

We recently had to euthanize our dog, Ruby. It was an incredibly difficult thing to do and I cannot say it was a pleasant experience. I had taken my dog, Ruby, to Dr. Goddell for several years and had always found him to be a no-nonsense practical vet, willing to go the extra mile if the patient's owner wanted it, but certainly willing to look at other factors in treating animals as well, like cost and practicality. He was always quick to support whatever decision you made, so long as it was humane.

Dr. Goddell and his staff made an otherwise horrible experience more tolerable through their compassionate treatment of my husand and I on that day. We were assured over and over that we were doing the right thing and that Ruby would not suffer. This vet went out of his way to be kind to us, offered us lots of support and then sent us flowers after the fact. I must say that if I ever have other pets that require vet care, I will always go to Dr. Goddell. He's the best.
