The service was terrible!! The over priced food was just okay. The final straw was when they turned the lights out before we even left. We had to ask them to turn them on so that we could make sure we had all of our things. There is much

With all of the choices available in the Twin Cities, I can't imagine why anyone would go to La Grolla. The food is not offensive, but nothing imaginative or particularly good. I imagine it is a lot like Olive Garden. And if that were

We ate there Saturday and ordered the Alfredo with creamy lobster sauce and tiger prawns - I felt spoiled. The sauce wasn't overpowering with richness - it was just right. The tulip for the dessert - fresh fruit with a sweet cream sauce

Went here for lunch on a lazy afternoon and was pleasantly surprised by the friendly staff, amazing ambiance, and affordable food. They even had some amazing music playing that I got the name of the artist from the server and have really enjoyed! Highly recommended.

I just found La Grolla through a friend. I was amazing. I will be going back as much as possible.

We did not have a reservation and it was a very busy night. Sarah the Manager was awesome and found is a spot at the bar while we waited for a table. While waiting the kitche sent out some sample apps, they were great. Once seated our food was great and our server Will was spectacular. Can't wait to go back for my birthday celebration.

I went to La Grolla last weekend for dinner, and was absolutely blown away. From the minute that we arrived to the second we left, we were treated like royalty. I encourage any and all people to check out this gem of Cathedral Hill...

We had reservations at 8:00p on a Saturday night, prime time in the restaurant world. We arrived just after 8:00, but were still greeted with a smile, and the courteous hostess seated us promptly. The aromas that flowed from the kitchen were extremely inviting, followed by hip music gently flowing in tandem.

Our waiter, Will aka MC Hammer was extremely knowledgeable of the wine list, menu, preparation of the food and overall information. The food was prepared with extreme dedication and presented with indelible detail and heavenly grace. We started with a fantastic duo of grilled asparagus and firm polenta, accented with a very delicate Gorgonzola cream sauce. The halibut was absolutely incredible, sitting atop a melange of crushed tomatoes, kalamata olives and capers, paired with perfectly roasted vegetables and scalloped potatoes. The ribeye was one of the tenderest steaks that I have ever tasted, seemingly marbled by the hand of God. Desert was phenomenal, and the coffee was outstanding!

From the moment we arrived to the second that we left, we were consistently wowed by the service, food, price, and everything that makes this the best restaurant in the Twin Cities!

Cons: Not a one!

From the minute we set foot in this establishment our experience with this woman was heinous. Other prospective patrons waiting for their tables also found her to be a conversation piece of ignorance. Her rude, loud, distaste for customer service was absolutely astounding. La Grolla is such a great addition to St.Paul that there is no need to have such an unpleasant person representing such a fantastic establishment. If La Grolla doesn't care about how it treats it's customers ,we just won't be back!

On the other hand the food was wonderful and the service great as always.

The service was great - in fact it reminded me of Fogo De Chao because it was so fast and frequent. But what is service without food? Started with the delicious mozzarella crab cakes. Moved on to the perfectly seared halibut. Ended with chocolate cake (ok so the cake wasn't anything special but it's chocolate cake so what do you need?)

I'm convinced there's something about Cathedral Hill that makes you _want_ to like the restaurants there... but that said, La Grolla deserves to be liked - and frequented - by anyone with a taste for Italian.

We went for a lunch date and had great service but inedible food. The stone crab cakes lacked any texture or flavor of crab. The sauce was bland. How can you ruin bruschetta? That too had no flavor. After $40, we left hungry in search of another meal.

We made 7:30 pm reservations for 2 and it was a busy night right after Christmas. When we checked in, there were several groups waiting to be seated and the host told us it was just going to be a few minutes for a table. After 25 minutes and watching everyone who was on the list be seated before our reservations, we went back up to remind the hosts that we had reservations and that we had been waiting for a half hour. They looked at us blankly, and then rudely told us that a table was ready now...this was a table that my husband noticed had been empty for at least 15 minutes so he asked why we had to wait so long for it. Again, blank stares. After no apology, and some of the worst customer service we had seen in a long time, we decided not to eat at the restaurant. We are certain that the woman we checked in with did not even remember we had made a reservation, and couldn't have told us what the last name was on our party...we had quite positively been forgotten. We can understand if a restaurant gets busy, that you may have to wait a bit for your reservation, but to have the host staff completely disregard that we waited 30 minutes for our reservation, without coming over to apologize or assure us that our table would be ready soon, that's just plain terrible service. And to top it off that both of the hosts working behind the desk were rude to us, when we REMINDED them of our presence, well that's ridiculous. We can't really understand what the point of reservations at this restaurant would be, if the walk-ins on the list get seated before reservations do. We have eaten at La Grolla a number of times and have had both good food and an attentive wait staff. We are very disappointed that we had this experience and not sure if we will return to use the gift card we have.

I love going here for special occasions. It is a quaint restaurant and the food is excellent. The staff and atmosphere are fabulous. I have never had a bad meal or experience here.

I've been to La Grolla several times. The food is ok but overpriced and the restaurant is extremely small and cramped. Three out of the five times I've been there I've had an AWFUL waiter and because of him I refuse to go back. The service is slow and my entire table received their meals and it was not until 10 minutes later that I received mine (the waiter didn't even bother saying anything about it the delay in serving my meal). After receiving it the meal it did not appear to be what was listed on the menu and I asked him about it, he became extremely angry and short with me and I told him it was fine just so he would leave the table as he was beginning to yell and other patrons were noticing (note that I was not arguing with him but just simply asking). Another poor experience with the same waiter occurred when I was getting together with a friend for dinner. I asked for no Parmesan cheese on my entree and when we received the bill he charged me an extra $1.50 for not having the Parm. He told me that was the only way to ring up the item (later I called the restaurant and asked about this...I spoke w/ the manager and she said that was incorrect and I shouldn't have been charged). If you do decide to go to La Grolla watch out for the shorter waiter with some dark hair and an accent (possibly Italian).

I've decided never to set foot in La Grolla ever again because of these awful experiences, overpriced food, and cramped dining area.

I have been to La Grolla 3 times, and each time I've had wonderful food and service. Each time I've been there, the waiters have been very knowledgeable and helpful. The Caprese salad is a must, as is the Capesante (the sea scallops were cooked absolutely perfect and the noodles weren't greasy). The gnocchi was the best I've ever had. If you go with a group, definitely eat family style so you can sample everyone's food!

Fare: I tried the breaded and stuffed green olives and they were amazing! They were very salty, so they went well with bread. I had the pasta with a meat sauce and I couldn't even finish half of it, as it was so hearty!

Price: Reasonable, some of the dishes make you pay more for meat.

Was my favorite restaurant! One afternoon I was in for lunch with a friend sipping some wine when all of a sudden a very disruntled owner started mentally and verbally abusing one of his employees out in the dining room. Not only was I concerned, I was appauled at the blatant conduct of this man. The vulgar language the owner displayed, along with the threat of losing his job clearly had the employee visibly shaken. Not only was I very disappointed in this experience; I will no longer support such an abusive, small man. I hope that other employees do not tolerate this kind of behavior! It's just not worth it.

Their food is absolutely amazing! Great atmospher! Service is awesome. My friend asked for a hot chocolate, which they don't have, but they figured out a way to melt some chocolate to make a drink for her. Server Ben was really cute too!

I am writing in response to the last posting by curlyhairedwarrior. Your response to the restaurant seems you are a person who has worked there and feel your leaving was unfair. I am not sure, but your extreme writing and attacks seem to prove that. I have worked in the restaurant industry for a long time and frequent La Grolla often, it is a favorite of ours and friends. I believe you need to let this go and grow up. I have never seen any of these things happen and know for certain the desserts are made there. You cannot buy those things at Cub. I have had wonderful experiences there and will continue to go back. I would urge everyone reading these to dismiss the acts of an unhappy, miserable person. La Grolla is great in all categories. Also, we had a groom's dinner there and Sarah the manager was awesome to work with. They valued us as customers.

Great food. Great ambience. The only reason not to go is if you are overly particular about your personal space. Otherwise you will love it. See also, Buona Sera.

As you walk through the threshold, garlic and bread aromas dance through the air making you feel that you've finally returned home, to Italy...even if you're not Italian. While the seating may be a little tight, the ambience is romantic and warm. The outdoor eating area makes you feel you've left MN.The pasta is served in generous portions, and I refuse to name a favorite, since I am a fan of anything with garlic, cheese and red or white sauce. I could honestly sit and eat the homemade bread dipped in oil and sip a nice glass of red wine, but that is only the beginning. Spinach salad is quite good, as is the polo champagne (chicken in a champagne based cream sauce). But, honestly, it's the romantic feeling that makes me return. Propose to someone special here.

Friday night dinner went from bad to horrific. As we sat at the bar and waited 20 minutes for a glass of wine" we are out of wine glasses" 20 minutes into this wait I notice three glass shelves filled with Champagne Flutes and Hand blown wine-stems we are served a tepid white wine, and then we are escorted to our great seat which consisted of me watching stressed out servers run through a corridor to patio. After sitting at the table for another 15 minutes or so I ask who our server is, and some frazzled server comes and gives us the "I have five people at my table" so then we order the Carpaccio which was weak and lacking any soul which means lacking Parmesean or capers. So into my third bite I feel this foreign thing tangled upon my palette. I reach to my mouth and well it's a hair. So I attempt to do this well with some tact but apparently Tiny Tim does the prep because it was over 10 inches long. I summon the waiter and he SHUSSHES me to preserve the integrity of the dining atmosphere. I am so grossed out and then voila' a bottle goes crashing to the floor. This was just the worst 100.00 dinner in a long time. And the Maitre'd of the evening was so out of it that he seemed to be having an out of body experience. The place had no leadership and no one wanted to deal with me and my furball. It was an awful evening that I shall not repeat- Gross!

Visited La Grolla as everyone I know - LOVES IT! Well, the bar area is extremely tight as is the dining area. Some might find it charming, I did not. The reservations that were made, were not kept and the hostess actually didn't seem to care.

I wasn't impressed with the overall menu, so I chose a special. My special was extremely salty, the only thing hot was the pork - the veggies and potato were warmed up. I could not eat the meal. So, on to dessert - I'm pretty sure the Creme Brulee was made (including the sugar top) earlier in the day. It was not even warm.

I will give the server (not the impolite hostess) kudos. She was a good and informative server and did take my meal off....

I will not return.

All the food was excellent, especially the gnocchi. We had to wait a little while after arriving for our reservation, and the bar area wasn't big enough to accomodate the 4 of us, so we were in the door way. The serivce was great once we sat down and the selection of food is amazing for such a small palce.

My wife and I are major foodies, and have eaten almost everywhere 'high-end' in the Cities. La Grolla is top 3 (and I can't think of the other two). AMAZING specials (especially the meat; the lamb, the filet, hmmmm...), great pastas, the scallop appetizer! We've been several times now (as I want to make sure to vet it before writing a review). It is very dimly lit, nice for romance. People are right, the tables are close, but the space isn't big and it's always packed...so you have to be ok with that (it's never been a problem for us). Service is great, one night there was a hiccup and the waitress completely made up for it!

We're huge fans and are becoming regulars! Very charming (great date spot).

Have you ever looked at a cookbook from the 1980's? The grainy photographs, the bad interior design, the plates that look dated? That is EACTLY the impression I got from my first night at La Grolla. Even the bathrooms were like a time capsule, going back to that era. La Grolla is a very compact restaurant. The tables are packed so tightly that the waiter can barely access the table, and must do so from afar. I wasn't even able to see his face, since the only way he could address out table was from behind me. Not only that, but you'll be overwhelmed by conversation from all sides. I hope you don't get to sit next to a group of LOUD obnoxious women like i did. La Grolla's compactness and hard brick walls mean that all that noise really has nowhere to go. It's loud. La Grolla is also, in my opinion, very overpriced. Expensive entrees do not come with salad. My brother got the salmon risotto ($18). It was a smallish plate of rice with two stalks of asparagus and literally a few flakes of salmon. It was mediocre to say the least. I thought the portions were small for what we paid. Dinner for 4 and a $20 bottle of wine came to $140 (not incl. tip), and only one person had meat. We did get the $10 calamari, which promised to be tossed with deep-fried zucchini. When it arrived, on a tacky platter from the 1980's, there were three tiny pieces of zucchini. What angers me is that zucchini costs nothing, and still a restaurant like this chooses to serve me three TINY slivers of it. I am glad we didn't sit in the front area, as the tables seem to be very close and not very romantic. Our service was capable, but there's no room or time for any rapport to develop, and i think they know that. They just try to do what they can in the tight area they're given. the busboy was phenomenal, and the bread we had before the meal was very good. overall, we would never go back, opting for a roomier, less expensive place which is quieter and allows for better service.

Pros: selby ave location

Cons: crowded, loud, overpriced

Last night we went to La Grolla for the first time to celebrate our 6th anniversary and our awful waiter absolutely spoiled it. After dinner, my husband got up to use the restroom and I was left sitting on the patio by myself. A few minutes later, a waiter (not ours) dropped off a desert at our table and I assumed my husband had it sent out to me as a surprise so I started eating it. Well, a minute or so after that, our waiter came out, saw me eating my desert, and said loud enough for everyone on the patio to hear and turn around, "Are you seriously eating that even though it's not yours!?" It turns out it was for the table right next to us and had been delivered to our table by accident. I was so embarrassed I could have cried, and then I was getting dirty looks from the people whose desert I had been eating and snickers from others on the patio. Our waiter never apologized, and I am so embarrassed I will never go back. Even before this happened, I found the food to be very underwhelming and overpriced. La Grolla is not worth it! Your money would be better spent at Kincaid's or Forpaugh's.

We arrived on time for our reservation. It was raining, so walk-ins and patio goers were given reserved tables. Not Cool!!
We were then offered a small high tbale in the bar. When I'm spending that kind of dough, I'm not going to eat in an entryway...
However..
The service was quick and attentive, once we were seeted at a teeny table not 12" from out neighbors. Private conversation was out of the question. Our server, sara, was congenial and very knowledgable. Ask for her, she'll take great care of you!
We started with grilled calamari steaks with a citrus sauce. It was accompanied by another dipping sauce that tasted like mayo with cajun seasoning. The calamari steaks were done so perfectly that they needed none of the oddly-paired dipping sauce. The oregano and lemon were plenty.
My wife ordered the salmon stuffed with stone crab and it was also perfect. I ordered the pappardelle with scallops and crab. It too was excellent, except the pappardelle looked suspiciously like fettucine. Too bad, I was looking forward to the homemade 1" flat noodles. Hey, a substitution's fine, JUST TELL ME!
We passed on a gorgeous dessert tray.
Even though the place was jammed, the food was hot, fresh and not rushed. Plenty of staff was on hand to make sure of that- probably because the pation was closed.
Overall it was an excellent meal.

I think the food here is so good! I am always pleased with my selection. Sometimes the service is a little slow when it is busy, but they gave us a free glass of wine when it took our server some time to return with the fresh pepper. But the place is great.

La Grolla has it all. Ambiance, creativity, knowledgeable staff, location, lobster cream sauce. The first time I dined here I knew I was hooked for life. They've never given me a reason to feel otherwise. Capesante is more than worth the price of admission. I don't know if you could call this comfort food, but everything I've tried sure feels that way to me. That's not saying the food is brainless though - quite the contrary.

I ate here several months ago and still can't get over how fantastic it really was. One of the highlights was that their special menu was a voluminous as their normal menu. Great Experience!

Went to La Grolla with a small group of 4 and truly enjoyed it. The food was excellent, if you like great Italian or fish, this is a place to try. The specials were wonderful, with a ton of options. Can get busy, so do make reservations.

Was the best food ever
We had Stone crab cake...uhm with spider sea scallops wrapped in pasta, fried and served with Lobsrer sauce.DELIZIOSO.
Then we had Risotto ai Funghi e Tartufo. Truffle mixed wild Mushrooms risotto.
The rice was al Dente like in Italy.
Then we had rackof lamb wit a Brunello 1997 and our meal was flying on clouds.
The Almond tulip with mixed berry and Mango cheese cake were the best end for a wonderfull evening in a cozy and fun place

The food and atmosphere here is great! I went with 3 others and loved every one of our dishes, definetly try the specials. They were all wonderful!!! However, I suggest that if you go to go at an "off peak" time, perhaps before 6 or after 8:30. We went around 5:30 and had excellent service for the first half hour but around 6 the place becaome very crowded and uncomfortable and the servers were Very busy. We didn't get much attention after 6pm from our server. But over all I recommend it, if you go when its not extremely busy!

After seated for our 5:30 reservation, my date & I ordered some Crab Cakes, and then ordered our main entrees along with a bottle of wine. After our meal we proceeded with some so-so pie along with coffee. Couldn't have a pre-dinner drink since they didn't have their liqour permit. No drink after dinner, so we ended up having some coffee with our pie. While relaxing having pie and drinking coffee we were asked to pay the bill, which I promptly did. After the bill was paid we were asked to be moved to the overcrowded bar to finish our pie and coffee! Yes, they had another reservation that was waiting for their table. The food was good, but noisy atmosphere along with terrible service makes it a non recommended place to eat especially for spending $$$ and asked to be moved from your table.

Large menu selection of pastas, chicken, veal, seafood, beef, lamb. Good dessert selections creme brulee, chocolate moose, chocolate souffle, tiramisu. The crab cake appetizer was unique and tasted excellent. We had two of the specials lobster sauce pasta with three of the largest prawns Ive ever seen ($22) and a superb rack of lamb. The lamb was simmered in a wonderful cabernet reduction sauce and topped with fresh rosemary very tender one of the best Ive ever had. A bit pricey at $36, but it was the largest rack Ive ever had as well 8 chops.
Nice selection of moderately priced ($25-$40) Italian wines. We ate dinner on the patio which was very pleasant and quieter than the main dining area. Service was good although we waited a bit for our wine to arrive and our appetizer had already been served. Overall, a great meal.

I was so excited to finally visit La Grolla. It was a beautiful restaurant, unfortunately our waitress was incompetent and rude. Our six top, ordered a bottle of Shiraz. She came back with a Cabernet. When we informed her of the mistake, she argued that this wine WAS the "petite syrah" we ordered, even though it stated Cabernet! She explained that she was "taught" that a Cabernet Sauvignon is the same thing as a Petite Syrah! WHATEVER, crazy lady, but we didn't order either! We asked for the Shiraz!
Which much ado she finally brought the right bottle. The polenta mushroom appetizer was mush with salty gravy and my dinner of veal stuffed pasta was an unappetizing plate of congealed butter. The waitress threw away my friend's food that she asked to be boxed up. Another downfall was that they were out of SIX dishes!

This restaurant is an absolute gem! Great wine, ambience and out of this world delicious specials! I recommend this place to anyone and everyone and will definitely be back. We decided to go at the spur of the moment on a Friday night and the host was gracious and kind and found a way to sneak us in.

This is the kind of restuarant I love. No too big, privately owned, good food at good prices. Love the atmosphere - very romantic. The Twin Cities needs more places like this. Service was shaky on the follow-up but all in all competent, and everyone was very friendly. Can't say enough good things about the food and the overall value. I thought the bathrooms were fine - contrary to another reviewer.

My friends and I were impressed with the style of this restaurant. We were thrilled with the outdoor seating area. However, our server did not visit us for at least 10 minutes, hardly paid attention to us after the initial visit (not that we needed someone to hover, but drink refills would have been nice), neglected to bring us an appetizer we had ordered and didn't even offer us anything to compensate that fact. I will go back, though, because I'd like to give the establishment another shot.

I went here on a Monday night with some friends for my birthday and I would definitely go back! The service was wonderful: very attentive without hovering. The crab cakes were excellent as was the bruschetta. The specials menu was almost as large as the regular menu, which worried us at first: how can a restaurant have so many options and still provide great quality food? We did not need to worry. Everything was great. The fresh fruit and mascarpone dessert was my favorite part of the meal. The atmosphere is very warm, although, it was a bit loud in the dining room. The bar seemed very cozy and would make a great date destination.

My husband and I were sorry to see Tulips leave this site, but our sadness was quickly whisked away after trying La Grolla on Friday night. We ate on the patio, which was fantastic, but walking through the interior of the restaurant made me feel as if I had been taken back to Florence. The ambiance was magnificent, but it pales in comparison to the food. My husband and I ordered the capasante appetizer with shrimp and our friends had the crab cakes. Both were divine! All four of us could not pass up the special lobster fettucine with jurassic shrimp (when they say jurassic, they aren't kidding) and we were not disappointed. The prices were incredibly reasonable and the food and service impeccable. We will be back again and again!

This is a promising addition to the Saint Paul scene. The service is exceptional, and I was shocked each time I was prepared for attitude, and I received warmth and graciousness. The food was very good and though I will not jump to conclusions after the small meals I have had there, I can say that the charm of the setting and the service will guarantee you a pleasant evening. If your night plans include alcohol, call ahead: their license is in process.
