A friend and I went out for a quick bite to eat at Chiang Mai for lunch. Our server promptly came over to the table when we arrived and then failed to show his face the rest of the afternoon. We found ourselves saying "where did he go?"

We had high expectations for this restaurant based on the CS reviews, but we were sorely disappointed. We dined with another couple and started with 2 appetizers, the fire wings and happy shrimp. Both were average at best. For a thai place and with with the name "fire" you'd think they would have a kick but the sauce while tasty was bland. The shrimp were small and overbreaded but had decent flavor. For entrees we had the yellow curry chicken, pad thai and 2 stir fry dishes. We ordered 2 flame HOT and our friends ordered 3 flame SUPER HOT. The flavor of the curry and the pad thai was OK, but overall they were average dishes and the HOT was more like mild while the SUPER HOT finally had a bit of heat to it.
The staff was friendly, the atmosphere was nice and they had a good imported beer list but overall we were disappointed with the food.

Good Thai food. The wontons with jalepenos are very good. Good happy hour specials. Portions are generous. I usually take over half my plate home. Very nice that you can request no MSG.

My roommate and I frequently dine at Chiang Mai Thai. We have been SO impressed with the food!!

The staff is always willing to accomodate our tendency for spicier dishes and add or eliminate certain ingredients. We've always been greeted and served by friendly, knowledgable people, and have never had a less than satisfactory experience.

My roommate usually gets the green curry with either chicken or tofu and no peas. It's always delicious. I'm a fan of the penang curry with fried tofu and a variety of vegetables with brown rice. I always ask them to make it very hot and I have yet to be disappointed. YUM!

After reading excellent reviews for this Thai joint in Uptown, I decided to give it a try. Let's just say I experienced sticker shock when I realized that a bowl of soup costs $14!!! I don't really care that it was a generous serving, I simply don't believe soup should ever be above $7-8. The glass noodle salad I had with it completely lacked flavor. However, the wait staff was very nice.

A picky friend made a few extra requests before our food was delivered, and when we got it there was a huge spoonfuls of hot peppers in the middle of our food. The server asked if it was hot enough for us. This is one of those places where the staff messes with your food.

I hadn't been to Chiang's for a few years and remembered it as fancy and tasty- what happended? My order had tofu that I am sure was from the night before because it was rubbery rather than crispy then soft. The potatos were not cooked all the way through either, yuck. I will stya with TrueThai from now on since they are both about the same price.

I have been to Chiang Mai Thai 3 times now with 3 different groups of people and I have enjoyed every experience. The fresh spring rolls are great and the Tom Yum soup is extremely flavorful. Be carefule when they ask you how spicy you want your dish, I love spicy food and a 2 is about my limit. Enjoy!

sure the atmosphere is ok. the menu is limited and the food is mediocre; even bad. I just think khin do down the road has better food, chai's thai is VERY authentic and fabulous, Azia (on Eat Street) has a wide range menu! Just say no on this one.

The sweet green curry was excellent, the best I have ever tasted. I asked for it to be made one notch hotter than normal and they did that. It was perfect. My husband ordered the fiery seafood entree and he said it was dreadfully bad (tasteless sauce and just not good). I wondered as we were leaving why we didn't send his back. The calamari appetizer was not very good either, the batter fell off as you tried to eat it. Overall, I would recommend Chiang Mai Tai because the curry was so good. Also, they take reservations and on busy nights, this would seem like an excellent idea.

The perfect uptown place to go if you love to put up with with bad service. Bartender was drunk/high on a Sunday evening unable to comprehend simple orders. Also had a magnificent condescending attitude to everyone she served. I paid $20 for a beer to simply escape the disgusting customer service...waiting for change would be like asking God for a Cadillac. I had much nicer interaction, though much lower expectation, at the McDonald's I went to later.

I am a huge fan of Thai food, and this is hands down one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Minneapolis. I highly recommend the jalapeno cream cheese puffs, the chicken satay, the fresh spring rolls, and the curry dishes. I have never had something here that I didn't enjoy. Candlelit tables and a fun layout make this place feel cozy and relaxing. Great service, and reasonable prices. I highly recommend this place!

Pros: Great food, good service, good drink options.

Cons: Sometimes the spice levels vary depending on who's working, so I recommend going a bit lighter and then adding spice if you need to.

We were impressed with Chiang Mai Thai from the very moment we walked in. We asked the host if he knew if any of the menu items were gluten-free, and he handed us a special menu with gluten-free options. We were then lead around the beautifully decorred restaurant to our seat, all though we could have opted to eat outside as well. The waiter knew the menu, and was able to point me toward the vegan options on the menu. I can't stress how refreshing it is to deal with a waiter who knows the menu.

I settled on the yellow curry, and let me tell you that it was the best curry I have ever had. The flavors and textures were completely different from what I was expecting. The potatoes and yams were so soft that they just melted on your taste buds. The waiter recommended that I have the tofu steamed as opposed to deep fried, and he was right, it went well with the meal. I will be longing for the sweet and spicy sensation up until our next visit.

The price is a little more than other thai places (at $12 an entree), but the extra money is well worth it. This place is probably best reserved for special occasions anyway, although I'm sure I could invent some to get back there.

Loved it.

I was a bit leary after reading some of the reviews about the service, but noted that no one complains about the food, so we gave it a try. My wife and I went on a Saturday night at 7pm without a reservation, and we were seated by 720pm. We had the fired scallops for an appetizer and the panang curry and green cuur for our entree's. Everything was phenominal. IComing off a trip from India, I had been searching for good Thai curry, and they delviered. There is nothing more that I could have asked for. Additionally, the price was very reasonable ($50 for 1 app., 4 drinks, and 2 main courses). I can't wait to go back.

Visiting from New York, I was so excited to find a restaurant in which the Thai food was better than anywhere in my city of origin. In fact, I haven't had Thai this good in about ten years. Outstanding taste and fresh ingredients seems to be key at Chiang Mai. I feel so lucky to have stumbled into this place. You can bet I will come back next time I am in Minneapolis.
It is worth noting my waiter Steve was also very kind and helpful. At this restaurant, everyone was, in fact.

My wife and I went here on valentines day. I had called a little over a week early to make a reservation. When we got to the restaurant we were greeted and promptly taken to our seat. There were no long waits in between things. The food was excellent and we got more than we were expecting. I got enough for two meals and my wife had enough for three. What I really liked is they asked you how hot you would like your dishes and even offered to make it hotter after we got the meal if it was not hot enough!
Our waitress was very good. She refilled our drinks before they were gone. She was very cheerful and friendly. When it was time to bag the leftovers another guy came and asked if we wanted to take them. He took our plates and quickly put them in containers. What was nice was that because mine had more liquid, he put the container in a bag also in case it leaked, then put both in a brown bag.
Overall, one of my best dining experiences and extremely good food as well as customer service. Very impressed. Oh, the price was very good.

When you want Thai food in Minneapolis this is the place to go. I love their wide selection of menu options and they allow you to choose what meat or non-meat you want them to put in your dish. This is great for vegetarians. You can ask them to hold the MSG too. The ambiance here is very nice. My brother orders the green curry dish and I order the stir frys. They also have nice vegetarian spring rolls with peanut sauce. I've enjoyed everything that I've ordered!

We went here on a Friday night. We were seated pretty quickly, however that's when the promptness ended. It took long periods of time between waiting for our order to be taken, our appetizer to come, then our entrees, and finally another long wait after we were done eating for our bill. The food was ok, but not so spectacular that I would want to go back to withstand the type of service we had. I would actually avoid this place in the future due to being almost ignored.

Overall, ChiangMai Thai was a pretty good experience.

Service: We were seated immediately, and our hostess was very pleasant and helped us get our young family tucked into a comfortable table. Our waitress was also as accomodating as she could be given the menu limitations re: kiddos, but was really nice about letting our kids eat some cheerios, and the milk and bananas that my husband had to "forage" for at the nearby Calhoun Square Starbucks.

Food: We ordered fried tofu (average), Yum woon sen (above average), yellow curry with chicken (average - the taste of the curry was a little flat and needed more body) and some sticky rice (you can't really screw that up) with beef jerky (which i found to be too sweet and salty at the same time, but I suppose some people may like it that way). I do like the fact that you can order your food with an extensive spectrum of spiciness.

Atmosphere: The decor is amazing - it's sleek and cozy at the same time, definitely with nice ambience. It would be a great place to meet up with some buddies for a meal.

Overall, the atmosphere is really nice, and worth a return trip for the atmosphere alone.

My fiance and I went to the trendy, uptown Chiang Mai Thai and the food was wonderful, but the service was the worst we'd ever had.

The waiter was very snobby and it seemed like he couldn't even stand being in our presence, so much so that we did not receive timely refills. We were dressed nicely and not acting rude or out of line at the restaurant. He was very curt with us and I could see him talking with another waiter and laughing in our general direction. I was really hurt by this and don't understand how the management allows such poor treatment of customers.

NOT recommended unless something changes in terms of customer service.

I love the food at this restaurant, and it upsets me that I won't be going back. I've been several times and always leave upset with the wait staff and hosts. For my husband and I, part of going out to eat is the atmosphere - not just the food - and every time I've been, I've ended up just feeling put off with the way we've been treated. It's interesting too, because reading the reviews it seems as though other people have said the same thing - if I was the manager of a restaurant I would be reading these and attempting to correct the bad behavior of my staff.

One of the problems I have with Thai restaurants is that the "spicy" dishes are never really spicy. Or, if the dishes are spicy, they are so immersed in the peppers that you cannot taste anything else. I think that the dishes here have the perfect blend of peppers and distinct flavoring. That said, the level of spicyness changes everytime I go there (I guess it depends on the chef cooking that night). The Pad Thai is delicious and so are the buffalo wings.

I can't say I've every been outrageously impressed by the food here, but I LOVE the ambience. When you step into Chiang Mai Tai, you almost feel asthough you are in Thailand and that's quite a feat! The happy hour is great too. I've eaten dinner here a couple of times, but nowadays i generally just come for happy hour and drinks because I just like hanging out here so much!

All around great restaurant. The food is excellent and the ambience is great. The service is not amazing but its not bad either. Their fried wontons are some of the best and all the entrees I have tried are excellent. Chiang Mai Thai is also a great value, if you skip the bottle of wine you can get appetizers and dessert and still stay under 35 dollars for two people. If you like Thai food this is the place to go.

The number one reason to go and vist Chang Mai Thai is their appetizers & drinks. While I think the meals served here are good, the appetizers are amazing. The appetizers are also inexpensive and will fill you up. When you pair those appetizers with a funky cocktail you end up with a combination that will be sure to keep you coming back for more.

The food was good, just like I had heard it was. However, I was dismayed with the service. I don't mind paying a lot for food (and their food is expensive, especially for what you get), but if I pay a lot, I expect at least decent service. Our waiter was rude and inattentive. After eating, we were fed up with the poor service and wanted to leave, so we asked for our check. It took him more than 10 minutes to bring it to us, and it wasn't even busy. The service alone makes me not want to come back.

Try it at your own risk.

Pros: good Thai food, fresh food

Cons: expensive, poor service

This restaurant serves excellent Thai food in a beautifully decorated space in Calhoun Square. Service is fast and friendly and the staff is knowledgeable. Prices are rather high, but the portions are good for the entrees and they have a nice selection of drinks. Parking can be difficult to find in this busy Uptown location unless you're wiling to pay to park in one of the ramps. Overall, a good experience.

I love CMT! The staff is friendly and urban, efficient and knowledgeable. Considering I know the menu by heart, I rarely seek recommendations but I think it is one of the best restaurants in town and I am an experienced diner who goes out to eat a lot. Bravo!

Pros: Food, Service, Hip factor

I remember checking this restraunt out when it first opened and after several years of living out of state and coming back, I'm so glad that it's still here. The food is good and the atmosphere is fun. It's great for a date or a group of friends. Reservations are definitely recommended though.

Had a birthday party there a few weeks ago. The service was horrible and the food was very bland. Not worth the money at all.

I've been a handful of times ... primarily at lunch. They should get points for consistency ... the service is always really slow and my food has always arrived cool (bordering on cold). With so many other great options in a 2 block radius, I'm amazed that they are still in business.

With so many other good restaurants around, including much better Thai places (esp. True Thai) I will never go back to Chiang Mai Thai. The service was awful, bordering on outright rude and the food was mediocore at best. The curry was mostly coconut milk with absolutely no other flavor or heat, even though it was rated "hot" (2 peppers). Our waiter left us waiting forever to order drinks and then mostly ignored us the rest of the night. Two good things about this place: pleasant ambience and lots of veggie options. It's too bad they don't do a lot more with them.

*UPDATE* I'm writing this nearly 2 years after I first reviewed Chiang. Since then, I have been here on at least 4 or 5 occasion and have had the chance to sample many dishes...all good! I especially love the muslim curry! And, contrary to many other reviewers opinions, we recieved excellent service. Drinks were pricey, but really good. I will continue to go back!

I've had Thai food in many cities and Chiang Mai Thai is about as good as they come. The Tom Yam and the Tom Kha are perennial favorites. My wife and I can never get enough of the Penang curry or the Massaman curry. After eating here there is usually no room for dessert. Neither Sawatdee nor the King and I come any close to Chiang Mai Thai in quality of food.

I love the atmosphere and service. the food is also wonderful, but it lacks consistancy in it's spice level. It's levels 0-5 are great, but what may be considered a 1 one day is a 3 the next. Overall the food is great and staff is wonderful!

Comparable to the Thai restaurants of Manhattan. Loved the Calamari. Chicken Basket appetizer was bland. The Green Curry with Scallops was excellent. So was Chicken Stir Fry in Ginger sauce. Service was decent for a busy Friday night.

I have eaten at many Thai restaurants in the Cities incl Sawatdee, Taste of Thailand and the King & I, but this place is definitely my favorite and my wife's, too! We just love the decor, the atmosphere, the food and the comfortbable booths. I also enjoy the beer selection which incl many of the brown ales and red lagers that I prefer. Service is iffy at times, but overall, ok. We don't come for the svc, we come for the food! I personally think their green curry is the best. I am usually uncomfortably full after my meal because I can't get enough!

thought it was pretty good. Portions are quite large for the price. Food is overall quite tasty. My wife especially liked the Tom Yam soup. I thought the curries were so-so, not too spicey. Thai is typically spicier, but I suppose it's slightly watered down for the Western palate. Still, quite enjoyable. Unfortunately the location makes for difficult parking. The restaurant also seems perpetually crowded, making it tough to catch the attention of a server. Also, very cramped.

This is the bst Thai restraunt I have been to yet. I have lived all over the midwest and have become quite a critic of Thai food. This is a place that would keep me coming back no matter how far it was!!!

Went the Chiang with 5 friends and had a great time, the food was excellent, the atmosphere was perfect. The dim lighting isolates your group and makes for a very private fell. The service wasn't great but the food was excellent. Overall I highly recomend this resteraunt.
