I switched from a higher priced Vet to Dr Oaks a few years ago and have never regretted the decision. His care of my three rescue dogs is excellent and he also cared for all of my numerous foster dogs. \r

I have been gonig to this Vet for a number of years, and have had mostly decent experiences. There have been times where the service is good and have had no issues. Then there are the times where the service at the front desk is unfriendly

The vet at Diamond Lake has always taken very good care of my cat. I have been a customer for about 5 years now, ever since my friend referred me. They always give very good directions on how to care for your cat. I love this vet and even drive all the way from New Hope just to go there.

Pros: Affordable and High Quality Pet Care.

I have been going to DLAH since I moved into the neighborhood. Dr. Oakes has been treating my dog and two cats since and always given compassionate, understanding care. (every thing from yearly visits to a fight with a raccoon that gave one of my cats bad lacerations). I know others who drive across town to use DLAH and all have been very happy.

We have been going to Diamond Lake Animal Hospital for 11 years with our two Australian Shepherds. They actually LIKE going to the vets. One of my dogs is very nervous, and he is able to make her feel comfortable. I feel lucky to have Dr. Oakes right in the neighborhood.

Dr. Oakes moved into my neighborhood 20 years ago. I took my 3 cats in for fleas at the same time I set of a flea bomb in my house. The staff said to give him this new kind of flea drops on their skin, I asked if it was safe and nothing would make them sick. They said, "Oh No", it's safe. So they gave this stuff to all 3 cats. I walked home with the 3 cats in the kennel and sat outside my home with them while waiting for the flea bomb to be done when all of a sudden, all 3 cats began to cry, shake and foam at the mouth. This horrible smell was coming from them. I thought they were dying. I rushed them back to the vet, this time with my boyfriend who witnessed this event. He told Dr. Oakes what just happened, Dr. Oakes was so cold and said it was just coincidental that all 3 had foamed at the mouth and that this incident had nothing to do with the flea medicine. My boyfriend got angry at his really poor attitude and acted like he didn't care about our cats at all. The next thing I knew, Dr. Oakes was actually in my boyfriends face yelling at him and drawing his fists. I realized this Dr was crazy. I knew then why he had tortured my poor cat when he declawed him and only "Glued" his open paws shut and didn't even bandage him upon going home. Cat litter got into the "Glued" wound and he began bleeding all over the house. We had to take him to the Golden Valley hospital, they were shocked at the crappy way Dr Oakes did the surgery. They stitched his paw up, AND bandaged it for petes sake, anyone would do that, and then gave us antibiotics for him. All this because Dr. Oakes didn't want to take the time for my cat and declaw him properly. So, that is 2 events that happened to us. We give the sign of the cross when ever we pass his office which is daily. We cannot stand the man. He is a creepy fellow. I don't think he likes cats.

Cons: MY CATS ALMOST DIED

I love Diamond Lake Animal Hospital. It is a very comfortable atmosphere, and my dog Zoe loves it. I knew the moment we walked in for Zoe's first shots that this was going to be our vet. It is reasonably priced, and such friendly staff. It is the kind of place where they get to know you and your pet, and are excited to see you when you walk in the door. I always feel confident leaving my dog in their hands. If you love South Minneapolis, you will love this clinic. Dr. Oakes is very straight forward, and never takes up to much of your time. I would strongly recommend Diamond Lake Animal Hospital for any of your pets.

I am very pleased with Dr. Oakes and his staff.

We were tired of the high prices at VCA clinics, and tried Diamond Lake on the recommendation of a neighbor.

Dr. Oakes explains things well, and is very friendly.

I'm a great fan of Dr. Oakes and his staff.....similar to the other rave reviews, I've had them squeeze me in for a couple of emergencies. Dr. Oakes phoned me (to update my cat's status), kept costs reasonable, and explained everything with patience and compassion. He's a straight-shooter, and clearly loves animals. He's also terrific at talking about the simplest procedures without seeming in the least condescending. My cats are always at ease in his capable hands. His staff's pets roam the clinic, and are positive, knowledgeable, and compassionate.

My girlfriend brought her lab here after I suggested the dog had fleas. I combed her and found flea excrement so I was relatively certain this was the diagnosis. After the appt, I got a call from my girlfriend saying the dog does not have fleas but was told to give her benadryl for a skin allergy. The next day the dog is still itching, I comb her again and find 8 fleas!! No fleas my butt. At the very minimum, a veterinarian should be able to tell you when your dog has fleas. We called to complain and were basically told "Too bad, so sad. Your loss." Never again will I bring any animals here!!

I have been taking my three cats and one dog to Dr. Oakes for three years now. I find him to be appropriately conservative regarding treatment and course of action, preferring the least invasive (and often most inexpensive) approach to solve whatever issue my pets have. I find his rates reasonable, his office staff professional and helpful, and his availability usually very good. I can usually get an appointment within a day or two of my call--sometimes the same day.

Dr. Oakes is also a "good citizen" of the Twin Cities pet community. He offers a free exam for animals adopted through a shelter, provided you call within two weeks (if I recall) of the adoption.

My animals have been patients of Dr. Oakes for years, and we have had nothing but positives to say. I, too, felt compelled to register on this site and add my review to counterbalance the two negative reviews below. Among other things, I appreciate Dr. Oakes' honesty--he doesn't pussyfoot around. I want information from my vet, not sentimentality. (I left a vet in the past because I couldn't take the cheesy 'performance art' from the vet himself, such as making me "say goodby" to my cat as she's being taken off for a surgical procedure. Is this what they're teaching in vet schools these days?) He provides options, and a realistic assessment of each option. My animals have received excellent care from him and from specialists to whom he has referred us. The entire staff is most respectful and professional. Congrats to all on a job well done!

My dog was bit by another dog and Dr. Oakes fit us into a tight schedule. He was very kind, and he only charged us $10 for the office visit. We are consistently satisfied with his care and his prices.

We have been taking our Westie to Dr Oakes for 2 years for the routine puppy stuff. Recently she became very ill. We called Dr. Oakes and he got her right in. Dr. Oakes and his staff ran many tests that all came back negative. We didnt think she would pull through, but Dr. Oakes didnt give up. After more testing Dr. Oakes diagnosed Addisons disease. He immediately started treatments. He kept her two nights to ensure the treatments were working. When we picked her up she was back to her normal energetic self. We couldnt believe it. Dr. Oakes explained the disease to us and let us know what we needed to do to control this disease. We are amazed by the amount of effort Dr. Oakes and his staff put into saving our Westie. His rates are very reasonable too. I highly recommend Dr. Oakes and his staff!

We have been taking our pets to Dr Oakes for about 20 years now, and there is no place else we would rather go. Dr Oakes and his staff are friendly and caring. If we have questions they are answered completely, and timely in a way that is easy to understand. Dr Oakes has let my 4 year old daughter participate in the exams on my cats by letting her listen to their heart with the stethoscope, check their teeth, and assist with vaccinations. If you have an emergencythey can usually juggle things around and get you in, if for some reason they can't they will help you find another vet that you can get in sooner. As for prices he is very reasonable, and will not recommend unnecessary medications or tests. Dr Oakes has a good rapport with his clients. The majority of which would not go anywhere else.

I felt compelled to register at this site and write a review after I happened upon some negative reviews of this clinic. Dr. Oakes has been caring for our two cats for 15 years. He does not try to sell uneccessary proceedures or drugs. He has opened up scheduling time so that our entire family could be present for putting our animals to down. He waived all fees once when I brought a cat in for a foot injury that "spontaniopusly healed" in the waiting room. He has always shared useful information about our pets' conditions with me and my kids when we bring an animal in.

Our family just got a dog from the humane society last night and I am looking forware to bringing her in to Dr. Oakes for a an exam to establish care. I recommend this clinic enthusiastically.

I brought my 3 cats in for their yearly shots. My appointment was for 12:30pm. Didn't get into the exam room until after 1:00 and then had to wait another 10 minutes for Dr. Oaks to arrive. When he asked me how I was doing I told not too well since he and his staff apparently don't feel my time is of much importance since I have had to wait 40 + minutes past my appointment time. He gave a cold response that things were running behind. I told him I should have been made aware of that when I checked in and had the option of rescheduling. He agreed but seemed unsincere. He did discount the appointment by $25 with out telling me he was going to. This is not what I was looking for and I don't like feeling as though I can be bought off.

Cons: unfriendly Dr.

I recently adopted a kitten from AHS. AHS told me that many kittens currently had Upper Respiratory Infection and that I should take him in if he became ill, which he did. I was able to diagnose the kitten, yet Dr. Oakes acted as though he had no idea what was wrong with it. He prescribed antibiotics and suggested that if the illness didn't clear up that I might consider returning the cat to AHS and adopting a new (presumably healthy) kitten! He justified this comment saying "it takes people a while to get attached anyway" This total disregard for the health and well-being of my pet is outrageous. I certainly did not adopt my pet only so that I can care for it when it is healthy. I will certainly be looking for a new vet and recommend that others considering taking their animals to DLVH do the same.
