I've grown up in the area and the Boondocks, formerly the Homestead Restaurant, has always been the go-to place for any area functions and partying and gathering. In a big sense, the establishment has kept it's heritage as the community center (the building is the converted Forbes Public School and has been in the area since the 1900s). Everyone, patrons and employees alike, are very nice and welcoming and the food is always a pleasure. Of course, the establishment serves beer and alcohol as well (this IS the Iron Range, after all) and there is a decent selection of tap beer as well as bottles including Grain Belt Premium Beer on tap and in bottle form. I have to plug it, its my favorite and its Minnesotan beer. Can't go wrong.

The "hidden" nature of the establishment gives it a jewel-in-the-rough quality and its always worth a stop if your traveling through the area. The big seller of the place is the Mama Mia pizza: seven pounds of meat, vegetable and cheese glory. I've yet to see anyone finish off an entire Mama Mia by themselves. My personal favorite on the menu is the Beef Philly (I add mushrooms and swiss cheese but it also comes in chicken form). If there is anything I would recommend trying out while your there, it would be the wings in hot sauce (three different spicy levels), garlic or BBQ form.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that the establishment is very close to the St. Louis River, a major highway for snowmobilers. Just exit the river at the Forbes access and head north.

Enjoy!

Just when you think you've seen every bar, or when you think you've had the best pizza from somewhere else, here comes Boondocks. We were actually sent here by friends, saying we HAD to try the pizza. We've only had their Four Piggy, which is ham, pepperoni, sausage and bacon. The crust is thin but if you're a meat lover, this is the one for you. There's always a thick layer of cheese and the sauce is great. They're friendly and quick. It's worth the trip out there!
