I don't know if the people that visited me sucked and were rude or what because my service was excellent! I just went to Lowertown as well and it's great! Their beer selection is just right, burgers are meaty, and the atmosphere is nice.\r

Horrible Crowd, Horrible Service. Save your time. They should close this place down, and turn it into a treatment center for people with beard lice. The beer list wasn't bad, but seriously, every bar has that beer list. I would much rather

I've lived in Uptown for about three years. Because of this I've come to expect a little attitude with my service, but my oh my this place takes the cake. Far and away the most rude and threatening staff of any restaurant I have been to

The Bulldog is good. Good happy hour- their french fries are really good. I would go back here for a casual happy hour.

I guess I??ll start with the good from my visit. Ample parking available, great selection of imported beers, and as my fiance happily pointed out?they sell cupcakes. The bartenders were pleasant and attentive, empty beers were filled quickly, and the selection is top notch. Wait staff was pleasant, even comped us a cupcake for no apparent reason.

Now I??ll start with the bad from my visit. I arrived with a party of four and was greeted by the host explaining a 20 minute wait was ahead. Fair enough as it was a busy Saturday night. After multiple drinks at the bar and a 70 minute wait, our party was seated. After viewing the limited seating in this location, it is clear that wait times can vary greatly. Once seated we all placed our drink orders at which point I asked the first time to get water. Drinks arrived, no water. We placed our food order and I again asked for water. I also asked for a side of sriracha mayo (love sriracha, eat it on almost everything) to go with the tots I ordered. Food arrived, still no water and no mayo for tots. I asked for both again and eventually got the mayo, but no water. I mentioned this to the friend sitting next to me so he asked for water and received one immediately. At this point the water was just comical. Three of us ordered burgers which according to the menu are made with Kobe beef ground daily. Perhaps my taste for Kobe was not primed for this burger, but it tasted as though someone packed the meat together to much or too long. The Ninja burger that I ordered lacked heat, seasoning, and flavor. I??ve had big macs that tasted much better than this burger. The tots were nothing short of the frozen variety available in your local supermarket, no seasoning (sriracha saved them). My fiance ordered nachos, and while the first layer was amazing, it was followed by entirely too many chips without toppings (a waste in my opinion) and small sides. It is also served on a layer of aluminum foil, of which I found a piece stuck to one of the chips I was about to eat. It is just a poor choice to serve food in such a manner, as I??m sure no one wants to deal with foil passing its way through the digestive track.

The overall experience was a bummer since walking into the place and viewing the menu I was hoping for a new regular spot. I will probably never stop by this location again unless it is to belly up to the bar. Nothing here that I would recommend to others although you experience may vary.

Pros: Imported beer

If you want to be treated rudely and threatened if you complain, then this place is definitely for you. In their tiny cramped bar area you can enjoy the rude treatment and dismissive condescension from their wait staff, and when they get your order wrong (don't worry--they will) and you ask them to fix it, it will be your fault entirely. Expect them to use profanity on complainers and to physically threaten and intimidate anyone who objects to their poor treatment.
In terms of value for money, you'd be better off eating out of a garbage can (likely healthier and cleaner too)--when your order does finally arrive, expect to feel ripped off. The portions will be small enough that you'll wonder what you're really paying for, the quality of the ingredients will be stale, and you'll just feel like a fool for going there in the first place.

Unfortunately, I ran into this horrible waitress they are all talking about below. Enough to make me never go back there. Obviously, a place that hires people like this doesn't deserve my business or yours.

This is just a good place to hangout. The bartenders are friendly and attentive. Their HH isn't bad either. Parking is a huge issue, especially in the winter. The bar is usually cramped. It's often hard to find a table. Because it's so busy, service can be poor. The good food, good drinks and great atmosphere make up for it.

I have always considered this Bar/Restaurant as one of my favorites. Comfortable and Low-key. Go in and relax and enjoy the comfort food. When people have a bad time I always wonder what happened. Everyone has their own opnion. Mine is that they have a wonderful beer selection, great Bar Food and fun, helpfull staff.
Oh Yeah - Looks like "Traveler69" has only been to 2 restaurants ever - did they get fired from a Bulldog or just have an Ex working there?
Go in and make your own opinion of this great place. See ya there.

Pros: Great Beer Selection, Food Offerings

Cons: Not too big

This place has the worst service from serving staff to management. They do not care about their customers. The wide variety of beer is great, food is unique and quite good and atmosphere works.

After reading the reviews I decided to bite the bullet and try the Bulldog in Uptown anyway. I've been to the other Bulldog in NE many times and heard that the Uptown location had a better menu, so my wife and I gave it a try based on our love of the Bulldog NE. Besides, we had a coupon.
The food was great, though the fries did seem "soggy" and were horribly over-seasoned (maybe they weren't blanched before they were fried?). I tried the cajun fries and my wife had the truffle fries. No major problems with the food.
The waitress, however, was god-awful! If you read any of the previous reviews about the blond-haired beatch working there, be warned...this creature has morphed from a bitchy blonde into a raging redhead. Actually, it wasn't that she was mean, just that she never (and I mean never) bothered to even look at us much less smile. She seemed to be perturbed that we wanted her to refill our waters and when she dropped the check said, "There you go." In fact, the only other words that she uttered were, "What do you want to drink?" and "Are you two ready?" Not once in her three sentences was she polite. My opinion is that she's sleeping with the owner, because there should be no other reason that this pseudo-server should have a job.
I asked why the truffle fries were $4.00 while the cajun fries were $1.75, my answer was, "Truffle fries are more expensive." Duh. I don't mind paying more for a specialty item, and the menu clearly states that there is an additional charge for fries, but why is the price of a side of truffle fries the same as a full order? (We received a side order, not a full order). A good server might want to mention that the side will be 50% of the cost of the meal.
Overall, I love the food. Again, I LOVE the Bulldog's food. It's too bad that I'll never eat at that location again. The waitress who brought our food, cleared our table AND said "have a good night" wasn't actually ours.
It's too bad. I would've tipped her.

Cons: Worst sever I've had in months!

My boyfriend and I used to go to the Bulldog on average 2-3 times a week. My favorite the veggie dog, his was the Fire Dog. I raved about this place to whomever would listen. It was my FAVORITE restaurant and bar. We would go for drinks, food or both.
My opinion has changed for a variety of reasons, mainly the poor service and change in menu items.
Now, I wouldn't complain about having to wait to sit down, or the amount of time it took to get my food, even when it bordered on ridiculous. I'm not the only patron in the place and not the only one expecting service.
We went one night and ordered our food. I had my favorite, my boyfriend went out on a limb with a new sandwich after discussing it with the server. It took some time for the food to come, but we had grown to expect that. Here was the problem: the food was terrible. My veggie dog, which at that time was more like a brat, was tough and dry. I couldn't even take a bite using my teeth! I had to use a knife and fork to cut through the food and then chew so much my jaw hurt that I quit eating well before i was even halfway through. While requesting our tab I mentioned this to the server. She told me she would tell the kitchen. We sat there, uncertain what to do when she didn't return with our tab. After a while the cook came to our table and aggressively stated that I obviously don't know what a veggie dog should taste like, because "that's what they're like". I informed him that my boyfriend and myself had been customers of the Bulldog for a number of years, and I had mentioned my disappointment with the quality of the food only because I knew the quality I should have been able to expect. The solution at that point was to comp us the veggie dog and grudgingly ask if that was enough. It took some time before I was willing to return. I was disappointed to find the menu a replica of the NE Bulldog...I have not returned since. I miss my favorite place.

Pros: Outdoor patio, extended beer list

Cons: Quality of service

The uptown location is just a boring bar. Overpriced hot dogs and just bland food with a crappy beer selection.

However, the NE location is AWESOME. Really good food and really good beer. Try the truffle burger with the truffle tots and don't forget to have a red velvet cupcake!

YUM!

Great beer selection, if you can't get a spot at the bar then leave. Worst waitress I have had in a long time. She showed up five minutes after we sat down and asks if we would be having something to eat. When we said no, just drinks, she threw menus down and showed up 5 minute later. Sonya, our lovely waitress, talked down to you when you mispronounced the name of the beer and even corrected me when I was drinking my beer wrong. Theses things I can overlook, however when it takes 15 minutes to notice you would like another drink and then another 15 minutes to actually get the drink, well I get upset. Avoid the blond.

my boyfriend and i frequent this restaurant during weeknights. they have great food, great beer, neighborhood atmosphere, and very decent prices for the city. there is that one b*tchy waitress, but try and avoid her....short, blonde, weasel-like features.

also, the music selection (when you can hear it over the small talk) is great...sometimes they play the current! (89.3 FM)

Some friends and I came here and ordered simple fare - burgers, onions rings and such. The french fries looked yummy and I guessed that they had cut up their own potatoes to make them, but they were soggy and devoid of taste. The onion rings looked wonderful but the onion inside was paper-thin and tasted as if it was reconstituted. I have not had a drier burger in my life - the meat was crumbling apart. Also, the meal had "negative consequences" later.

Also, a pet peeve which you may or may not agree with - I think appetizers should be served BEFORE your main food comes, not at the same time or after. Do I have to specifically ask for this? Why do places like the bulldog send out your appetizer along with the rest of your food?

I love this place! The cheese curds have spice inside the batter! It is the closest you can find to state fair quality. They always have a great selection of beer on tap and hard to find ones like Lindemans and tons of Belgium beers. Every burger they make they can make it vegetarian. They have awesome garlic and Cajun fries as well. The staff is friendly. It gets super busy Saturday nights, come early to get a seat.

HORRIBLE SERVICE. i've been to the bulldog in uptown numerous of times. the last time i was there, 3 days ago, the waitress we had was not friendly at all, which is not a surprise bc whenever we have her she is always a capital B. anyway, when we first got there we had a different server, we asked that server for four waters and a moment to look over the menu. 10 plus minutes passed and still no water or sign from the waiter, finally he comes back and says there is a shift change and tells us the "b" of the waitress will be our new server. that's great a shift change, you can't get four waters within 10 minutes? whatever. throughout our time there the "b" of the waitress is not attentive and rude. time comes to pay the tab, we put cash down on the table and leave. three or so minutes pass and we are talking outside at the corner of 26th and lyndale. the waitress comes out yelling at us in front of many people to come back inside to pay our bill. we tell her we did, we left the money on the table, she says it's not there so we go back inside with the stupid idiot. when we get to the table, sure as (blank), the money we left was still on the table. the nerve of that f-ing girl. next time you accuse people of skipping out on a bill you better be right. stupid idiot! i should have literally taken the money we left and counted it out in front of her and pocketed the tip that we left for her. she does not deserve a tip, she deserves to be fired. she is always rude. i like their food/menu, but unfortunately their poor customer service trumps that. SCREW the bulldog, there are other places in mpls that have great service and food.
my advice: go anywhere else ie) cc club, herkimer, psycho suzi's, independent, uptown bar, etc.

Great place for a burger or Chicago style hot dog. It has progressed from it's vegetarian Mudpie roots to more mainstream cuisine. You can still get some vegetarian items. There is outdoor seating in the summer.

This was a special weekend where my wife and I were just hanging out; no kids and trying to find some fun things to do. Believe me, we don't get to do this very often. When we want something to eat it's easy to default to the typical "corporate" franchise locations and we hate doing that but at least you know what you're getting. My wife actually found this on a "best of" list because their french fries were mentioned. And by the way, my wife goes to the State Fair (which I can't stand) just for the fresh cut fries. So we had to try Bulldog. All I can say is that our expectations were completely over exceeded. If you want the corporate food, don't go to Bulldog. If you want great tasting food and fantasic beer then you NEED to go to Bulldgog. Get over the lack of the franchise look and feel, and the servers aren't wearing their FLAIR, in fact they're probably tatted up a little. Our server Blake fit that description and he was awesome, and according to his words a "professional beer drinker" which made his beer recommendations that much more credible. They have over 30 beers on tap so you need the help of an expert. Suffice it to say, the beer was amazing and fresh. And speaking of wait staff, we went to Big Bowl corporate joint later that night and our server there couldn't carry Blake's note pad. As for the food, we both had burgers and they took a little while but when you're enjoying a fresh pint of anything with your loved one who's counting the clock, unless you're waiting for your little remote buzzer to flash at some other place! When they arrived and we got to taste, then I knew why they took a while. This was one of the best burgers we've had in a LONG time. They were fresh and obvioulsy made with great care. As for the fries? Well I might be able to avoid the fair because now I know where I can get the best french fries in town any time!

The Bulldog desserves a better average than 7.8 , and that is mosly the point of this review. Yeah, I can see where both negative reviews are coming from, and as a ten year veteran in the biz I am probably biased. But still, just cause you had a lousy time doesn't give you the right to trash the place and potentially turn away first timers and out of towners.
No one who has gone there more than twice will disagree. Unless of course the bouncers had to throw you out for being a bafoon or the serves just knew you were an a+hole from the start. Come on, if you can't handle a little attitude in Uptown, then go back to the suburbs and wear your sweat shop Abercrombie and white caps someplace else. Just cause you're too afraid to go to the CC club doesn't mean your B.S. will fly here either.
On a nicer note there are plenty of nice peaceful folks who may on occasion wear the AF and do in fact enjoy sports who don't mind drinking with a majority of people who can sing along with most Green Day albums. The crowd is perhaps the most unpretentious (doesn't take much in ol Uptown, but still) and generally amiable in the hood. Sure it's a bit smoky and greasy but the staff is awesome and the food is good. The beer is probably the best in town, and the Juke Box kicks bass. The Bulldog provides an atmosphere for us locals that was missing in Minneapolis before Matt opened the place. It's always busy on Friday and Saturday, and the rest of the week is never boring. Come and see for yourself.

Pros: Almost everything, and no I don't have not and probably never will work there.

Cons: The Golden Tee machine maybe, but hey i can look the other way i guess

This is one of my favorite hangout spots in Minneapolis. They have a fabulous beer selection, and the bartenders are cool about letting you have a sample before you buy one. Good "bar & grill" food. Their wait staff is usually very good. It isn't a very big place, so it CAN get really crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, so at that point the service isn't as quick as it usually is. But on weeknights it's just a great low-key hangout spot. Free street parking is nice! Whether you like dark beer or PBR, this place will have beer you like!!

Pros: ambience, parking, beer selection, low-key atmosphere

Cons: can get crowded on weekends

This bar has the best beer selection of its size in the Twin Cities. If you like a good Belgian beer, you should give it a try. The menu is strictly burgers and hotdogs. The big minus is that the restaurant smelled terrible, like a flooded basement. We'd have gone out to the patio for some fresh air seating, but like most Minneapolis restaurants, the smokers had taken over. Service was merely okay, and it was too noisy. I'd have rated it below average, but the beer selection makes it worth checking out.

The bulldog is a great place to drink some local and craft brews, they always have good beer on tap and not just the usual bud, miller, coors crap, but some good beers from some small breweries, awesome!. The staff is usually on the ball, the bartenders usually pay a little too much attention to the wait staff, but the wait staff is young and very cute so I probably would too. The food is your usually burger/hot dog and fries fare, its okay, but defenitely go for the beer.

What's with all the attitude? Your a server at an upscale 3.2 joint at best! The bar is not that cool!! Stopped in to visit some friends before last call and the service was a joke!

Want good food, pleasant environment, good service? Go elsewhere. Visited The Bulldog with 7 co-workers on a dinner break. Very few other patrons- the staff wasnt busy. After ordering from their simple menu of burgers, dogs and fried bar food, we waited 30 minutes it to arrive. Music was blaring and televisions on in every corner. When queried after 20 minutes, our waitress said it was a really huge order and it would be out soon. When it did finally did appear, food was delivered two or three baskets at a time. The last item, a salad, arrived well after the last hot food item. The food was hot, which was all that can be said in favor of it. Grease is the word at the Bulldog. It may be an ok place to drop in for a beer at the bar, but I wont be back for a meal.

The Bulldog is a nice neighborhood bar with a decent beer selection. The outdoor patio area can be nice in summer -- although they could really turn off the televisions now and then. The decor is generally dark and inviting.

For fans of authentic Chicago-Style hot dogs, this is the place to come. The Bulldog offers Vienna Beef dogs in a wide range of options. The Chicago-style dog is served in classic style with mustard, relish, onions, a pckle spear (in the bun), tomato wedges and small hot peppers -- along with excellent kettle-fried potato chips. For $4.50, it's a lot cheaper than traveling to Chicago.
