As longtime residents of Northfield we stop in several times a year to grab the occasional cookie when wandering around town. The quality of the products is consistently mediocre, and the owners are consistent in their rudeness. Their "Soup Nazi" reputation is legend...but on a positive note it is always fun to swap bakery stories with other locals. For great baked goods and respectful service the best bet is Cannon Falls or Faribault's bakeries. For the best bread, scones and caramel rolls in Northfield, the Brick Oven is a few blocks southwest of downtown. Even grocery store baked goods are a better bet unless you're looking to experience the "legendary" experience of getting barked at.

The only reason I am giving this a star is because the baked goods are well made. However, the rudeness I have experienced there is between dull and flat service to an argument when they were told they were rude. I left in tears. My mom and I were treated horrible. My child was scolded several times, when she was completely appropriate and safe, and overall it was the worst experience of my life at a place of business. They engaged in a full on argument, and raised their voices. They were not even respectful in any way. PLEASE consider spending your money elsewhere. I like to think I am a very respectful customer everywhere I go, and they not only shook me up, but made me SO UPSET.
On a side note, the place is dirty, you can't use a credit card, can't use their outlets for computer use, and the butter I asked for with my roll was given to me reluctantly, and then it turned out to be bad and inedible. Our fun family, after dance class outing, will be taken somewhere else, as well as any baked goods needs I may have in the future.
If the service was acceptable I could have overlooked their no cell phone rule(which is fine for me, but kind of unreasonable for this day in age), the unreasonably high prices, the number of negative signs posted unprofessionally around (how about spinning them in a positive way?) and TERRIBLY out of date decor and chalk it up to small town mentality and business survival. In my own selfish reaction, they should really discontinue their bakery if they hate it, and people as much as it seems. I would not be sad to see them go. I think I will try the bakery in Faribo. I have heard it is worth the drive from Northfield!

I have had negative experiences and rude service at Quality Bakery, but today, it "took the cake!"

When asked what I wanted, I responded to the female owner with my order. After giving me a disturbed look, she told me that she 'couldn't understand myr mumbling.' While I shared her frustration, I explained to her that I had Parkinson's Disease and clear speech (mumbling) is sometimes an issue for me. She snickered, made a joke, took my order again and after reminding her for the second time that I needed a receipt, I left and will never return. I'm not advising anyone to do the same, but if you have a disability, you may be taunted .

In a town that boasts two colleges, I'd expect the folks at Quality Bakery to appreciate the value of out of state parents as a potential source of business income for the bakery. My experience just now over the phone was quite the opposite. Not only was the woman abrupt and impatient with me, but she loudly slammed the phone down at the end of the call, effectively hanging up on my last comments. I do appreciate the challenges of running small town businesses, but those folks who choose that career path should also realize that better customer service ensures return customers. I for one, will not be returning to Quality Bakery. And lastly, it may seem quaint to not accept credit cards, but in this day of electronic payments, I just find it an inconvenient and (once again) insensitive to the interests of customers.

I read through these reviews and had to respond. Regarding no cell phones, it is about time a public area and small business requests no cell phones be used. Finally one place that you can go into and not hear numerous conversations on cell phones. I am on call and when mine rings I simply go outside to talk on the phone out of respect to the owners and their guests. If it is not business I silence it in respect of patrons and the owners. Regarding no outside food including coffee, they have every right since they are responsible for all food consumed in their bakery/coffee shop they should be requesting only their food or beverage. You cannot bring any outside food into a Caribou Coffee Shop or other restaurants what would make you think you can do it there? Regarding the credit cards, if anyone knew what those cost a business to process you would understand why some small businesses cannot accept them. I walked into another establishment that is family owned in Minneapolis and could not use a credit card. Everyone needs to make a profit especially in this economy, and credit card companies make it hard for business owners and consumers alike. For service and quality I have never experienced an issue with the Quality Bakery or it's owners and staff. I have been going their weekly for 3 years now and enjoy the baked goods, coffee and staff interaction. I however approach them with a smile and a good morning just as they have done with me. I have not seen them rude to anyone ahead of me or behind me and they have always been helpful. If you walk into any establishment and you yourself are not friendly you can expect to be treated that way as well. But again I have never seen Sue or Doug not being friendly to anyone and their employees have always been as well.

Give this Bakery a try, you will be pleasantly surprised on how wonderful the products are, and how great it feels to be in a small old town shop with the values that made America and small towns like Northfield what they are today.

I just have to say that I have had 2 experiences with this bakery. My daughter is a freshman at St Olaf College and we stopped in on move in day this September. The woman at the counter welcomed her and told her if she ever needed a "mom hug" to stop by. That made this mom feel much better about leaving her baby so far from home.
My second experience was today, I called to order a pumpkin pie for my daughter as she would not be home for Thanksgiving. Not only did they say they would provide one for her, deliver it to her at the dorm but they would also do so without having payment from me. I was asked to send a check to them whenever I could. I can not think of any bakery I would rather deal with.
Oh and did I mention that their baked goods are delicious too? I just wish they were closer to my home.

I have used this Bakery approximately six times in the past two years to deliver birthday cakes, goodies to my college student and it's been a wonderful experience each time! I love the fact that the phone staff are friendly, helpful, efficient, deliver the goods as requested, and trust me to send my check in the mail to cover the cost. How often does THAT still happen?

I personally enjoy the folks at the bakery. Yes, it took them a while to warm up....but once they did, they are now a joy to visit. And let's not forget the real reason, their pastries, cakes and donuts are amazing. And they also smile and say hello when I visit their store. Sometimes it's all in the way that you respond to people that makes the difference. And that works both ways!

As an out of state Carleton parent, I was thrilled to hear that the bakery would deliver to the college and accept out of state checks. The person that I spoke to on the phone was very nice and helpful. Their service was excellent. The cupcakes were, according to my son, great and I couldn't be happier. They were much cheaper than sending him something through FTD and we'll gladly do it again next year.

For the people that have experienced bad customer service at Quality Bakery I would like to put out a challenge for you to think about! Do you find bad customer service at other establishments? Something you may want to consider is that you will attract what you put out there. If you are "looking for poor service" you most certainly will find it. In defense of Quality Bakery I would add 2 comments. At any time I have been in there they are patient with me while I liesurly puruse the cabinets and make my selections. They offer advice on what to get refering to the taste of a product or the ingredients used. Secondly, I just got off the phone and she helped me select the appropriate size cake for an event, the flavor and recommended a frosting that was not on their list. I CALL THAT GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE! One final comment, I have owned a retail store in Northfield and it is a challenging enviroment to keep a store alive. The businesses are in constant harrasment of the chain stores and the division of the town folk supporting privately owned businesses yet demanding pricing and quantity that it is unattainable for a small business. I would like to suggest that unless you have owned a small business, have worried about it 24/7 and have worked 7 days a week to keep the business afloat I feel you should reconsider your criticism. The people that own a small business, myself included struggle to meet payrol, pay for inventory, rent and hopefully to take home a pay check. Not to mention the any debt that is incurred to improve a business is taken at the risk of an owners home. I say applaude them for owning a business and offering fabulous baked goods to the community.

I am a long time resident of Northfield. I knew of and patronized the quality bakery for many years. The customer service was wonderful , and it was a delight to go in and see Mr. Klinkhammer , who was always smiling and friendly.Unfortunately he is retired , and is offspring who has taken over the business does not share in his friendly customer service.I was made to go outside to my car on the street ,for a penny one time during a substantial purchase. The incident that kind of was the straw that broke the camels back , was one time when I was in there with my 7 year old daughter. We were in before school , just to get a donut and sit down and drink milk and coffee and eat a donut. Well you know how children can be about making a decision when there are so many.Evidently my 7 year old took too long to make her decision .Sue the owner said to my daughter , " come on lets go!" meaning hurry up. I couldn't believe it , we were the only people in the place.I said to Sue , what did you say? She didn't say anything , but I told her that was very rude to talk to a customer that way.She replied back , " its all a matter of perception".Well I would think customer perception would be very important in their business considering that today there are numerous places to buy donuts, and other places to buy baked goods. I have not patronized their business very much since then. Also I have talked to other people who have had similar experiences . In our family they have kind of become a joke , we call them the donut Nazis , and laugh about our experiences. It is great to have an old time bakery , too bad not the old time customer service.

I wanted to add to the comments, as a previous customer of the QB. Although I can appreciate and sympathize and believe customer's dissatisfaction with service, I think one reviewer had it right: this is a local bakery, a small town shop, with traditional, small town values. Take it or leave it. But you'll get the best from it if you expend the extra effort to be friendly and pleasant. True, the owners can be impatient, and when they discover that you've subscribed to the modern social code (fast-paced, cell phones, credit cards), they get defensive. But what's wrong with that?

If you're looking for friendly, small town interaction, and good treats, it's still a great Northfield business. And in this economy, I'd rather support a family business, stressed out and struggling, maybe, but still endeavoring to provide quality products and a nice place for the locals, especially seniors.

The guy that runs this place is a whack job, but the bread and pastries are very good.

He is just an odd duck. You ask him politely if you could have a cup of coffee and a danish, and he will just stand there staring at you until you say please.

DON'T EVEN think of using a cell phone here. Trust me. (and I have to agree with him)

They run this business, thier way, and have done so for years. I don't know how they get away with it, but they do.

I went in to have a cup of coffee, a couple of doughnuts and read my newspaper, which I've done many times before. There was one gentleman in line ahead of me. From out of nowhere about four kids came into the bakery and pushed their way to the front. When the gentleman in front of me left, I figured I was next...but no. The man at the counter chose to ignore me and wait on the kids instead. I just turned around and walked out. I won't be back.

After reading the unfavorable comments, I see the need for something positive. First, yes, the customer service could use a bit of polishing and finesse. However, I have been a customer many times there and have been reciprocated in pleasantness whether it's to order a birthday cake, purchase a treat for my kids or to buy bread or pasties. I just called to order donuts, on short notice, and the owner was extremely helpful and understanding of busy lives. She thanked me and was easy to work with even offering suggestions to help me make a good decision. I have to perhaps remind people that the service industry is not easy for those in that line of work- especially in today's busy climate of people constantly running around from place to place, making calls on their cell phones in the middle of transactions, making both the person on the phone wait as well as the added distraction for the service provider. I give applause to the man refusing to serve the cell phone user until she was off the phone. Those who work in the service industry serve others, but are not servants. Take a moment to be pleasant and excuse yourself from your cell phone for the 3 minutes it takes to place an order. Quality Bakery understands the need to preserve people's time- don't take theirs up by being rude and having another conversation. Let's get back to kinder ways and remember how great it is to have a LOCAL bakery that makes delicious treats for us to all savor. And cell phone person- admit it-- you could have very easily walked out if you didn't like how you were treated, but you didn't. You paid and I bet enjoyed every bit of that sweet treat! So let's give these bakers a break- know what you want, order it and give a thank you. Sometimes you have to be the first to offer a smile and a thank you. Make their day better by offering up kindness not an expectancy to be served.

Who do these people think they are???? went in there for a coffee, man took my order, prepared my drink, then informed me that he refused to "serve" me unless I hung up my cell phone. if that was an issue for him, why didnt he informed me of this before he took my order and made my drink, so i could have just walked out? unless in his opinion serving a customer consists only of taking their money. I did hang up and proceeded to give him my credit card, at which point he told me that they "dont take plastic" in a disgusted voice. that jerk caught me on a good day. I should have thrown that drink in his face. hope these jerks end up in bankruptcy court!

- Young woman at counter did not know if they were available to make cakes that weekend. Just said "I don't know," without offering to check.

- Asked man (an owner/manager?), who said they were available. When I asked him if they made specialty cakes, he said yes. But when I described what I wanted (a simple square cake decorated to look like a building), I was told it would be "too hard" and "too expensive." So I, someone who never bakes, managed to bake and decorate the cake myself, the way I wanted it. Guess this bakery simply didn't want my business!

As a commuter to Northfield I visited Quality Bakery & Coffee Shop to pick up a cup of coffee on a couple of occasions. Each time the service was bewildering. Even though I spoke and thanked them, there was no response, nor no eye contact. I felt that I was an annoyance. Needless to say, I have taken my business elsewhere. There are so many other wonderful places in Northfield to pick up a good cup of coffee where they appreciate your business--it's worth going across the street.

I am in Denver, but I have been to the bakery many times and know about their unfriendly service and didn't buy coffee there since it isn't very good. I called today wanting to know the owners names since I know they have changed since our restaurant used to buy from them. The woman that answered said she was the owner but was so snotty and didn't want to tell me her name. I think it is Sue, but I don't know. Does anyone? When I visit her I think I will confront her or maybe I won't waste my time. Someone could use lessons in customer service. jahne

My friends were visiting a few years ago. They decided to take a stroll in downtown Northfield. They happened by the Goodbye Blue Monday first, grabbed a cup of coffee and continued on their way. They came upon the bakery, decided to grab a pastry and have a seat. They were told they couldn't sit in the restaurant, as they had a Goodbye Blue Monday cup in hand, even though they had purchased pastries from the bakery. Until this incident I used to purchase birthday cakes and various other things from them - but had also had unfriendly service. Now I travel the 10 miles to Dusek's bakery in Faribault.

PROS:
CONS: Lacking friendly service

Quality bakery has the best selection of baked goods that I have seen around here. They always have fresh items, and the bread and buns are to die for!!! If you call ahead, they will make anything for you that you want, and it will be so
