DO NOT USE!
Bill has an adequate eye for initial design - operative word "initial"- he cannot comprehend that trees and plantings actually grow and his designs result in over-growth. I asked him for a low-maintenance yard/plan.... $65k later, I got a water-feature....and fir trees. WTF?! It's the highest maintenance thing I've ever had in my life! I finally threw in the towel and let nature fill it in with weeds and scum. Oh and by the way Bill, the theory that a thick layer of mulch doesn't need a weed-barrier is BS......and yes, a person DOES NEED EDGING to keep grass out of the mulch too. And a planting Zone 4 in MN is totally different than an Oregon Zone 4. I challenge you to find a fir tree in the metro area that volunteered itself and is doing fine. Don't use Bill Swanson's BG- you'll never get the guy to return a phone call and the part of the yard he wasn't hired to work on, he'll leave a mess.

I met Mr Swanson at the Mpls Home and Garden show. On April 7, 2009 he came to my house and we talked about a landscape design. I gave him a check for $500 to cover the cost of a design. At that time I told him cost containment was important and to use some of my existing plants. At this time he told me he would provide me with a preliminary design and would make changes to the design until we came up with a design that was acceptable to me. He came to my house on May 1st and presented a preliminary design in pencil, we went over the design. I had several concerns: (1) placement of the bench right next to the sidewalk on a very busy street; (2) the plan did not include many of my existing plants which means they would be discarded; (3) the inappropriate show of excess which did not fit in my neighborhood; (4) the exceedingly high cost. Total cost of the project as presented on May 1st was $7524.50. He did not give me a copy of the design but left me with a list of plants and other materials with installation cost separate. I did however give him a check for $1000 as a down payment, but over the weekend I reconsidered the project and called him on Monday May 4th and left a message saying I was not satisfied with the design and the cost and would like to keep the cost below $3000. We spoke after that and I explained my concerns and the need to change the plan to something I could accept. I did not hear from him after that so I initiated a call to him on May 12th asking about the requested design change. He told me he would have something to me by the weekend which would have been May 15th. I did not receive anything by that weekend or the following weekend (Memorial Weekend). I called him on Tuesday May 26th and told him I wanted my money returned because all I had received from him was a list of over priced plants and no hard copy of a design. I had in the meantime, priced some of the plants he proposed at a retail nursery, and thus learned that his stated prices, excluding installation, were excessively high.On Thursday May 28th I received in the mail a check for $1000 and a hard copy of the preliminary design I had rejected. I returned the rejected design on June 1st and asked that he provide me with an acceptable design or refund my $500. He did fulfilled his part of the agreement. I did not get a response so I contacted the Minnesota Attorney Generals office, They sent him a letter, he did not respond. I contacted the Better Business Bureau, to date he has not responded to the BBB. Beware of this business. $500 is a lot of money to pay someone and not get anything in return.

Bill is very creative when it comes to designing unique landscapes. However, he is not very creative when it comes to correcting problems. One or two dead plants - sure, he'll replace them. A waterfall that completely fails within one year - you'll never hear from him again!

we had Bill Swanson come out and do a design for our home for our front and back yard. We are so pleased with his natural ability and unique design!!. We can now enjoy living in our backyard during the out- door months, entertaining with privacy with the trees, unique plants, flowers galore! our patio and walkways to our out door rooms, water feature. why didn't we do this years ago?. Bill can come up with a design we never would of thought of. The front yard also, brings out the beauty of our home that we never could of done.We Love it!!

We are very disappointed the Botanical Gardens brickwork. We spent over $60,000 on brickwork and the bricks have been cracking and the bricks are falling off on the edges of 2 landings. Bill Swanson who designed the plan came out to see the problem and never followed through with repair or help us remedy the problem. That was 3 years ago and we never heard from him since that visit. We sent a certified letter, e-mail and 3 phone calls and no answers. He is a very nice man and very creative but does not stand by his brick work. His sales pitch to us was that investing in the brickwork will be a permanent structure with little maintenence. He used clay bricks which we have since learned CRACK and are NOT permanent. BEWARE!!! Do not use him because if something goes wrong with the work he willabandon you!!

Tis the season to enjoy the beauty of summer and the wonder that minnesota outdoors have to offer. We recently visited the gardens and had a wonderful day. It was so peaceful to just walk around and view the gardens. They have a lovely picnic area and what a better way to spend a sunday afternoon than a picninc in the garden. The cost for visiting is merely a donation and well worth it to assist in keeping up these beautiful gardens.
