I wanted a new look, and was hesitant to get a cut, because the last cut I had was soooooo horrible. I stumbled upon East 42nd Street Salon after googling curly hair salons in Minneapolis, and decided to book an appointment.
The stylist I had was Teresa. I explained that I wanted something different, but was a little nervous as the last cut I had was so bad. After a thorough consultation she calmed my nerves and proceeded to cut and color my hair. Teresa was quiet through the whole process, but I actually enjoyed not having a lot of chit chat. When I was done I loved my look!!!, and I pre booked my next appt which I have never done. I highly recommend Teresa she was informative, professional, and not a lot of chit chat.

I've been looking for a new curly hair stylist for awhile now for my naturally curly hair since Accolades salon kept screwing up my appointments, and I heard that East 42nd had a lot of stylists with curly hair experience. I booked an appointment with Teresa. I showed her pictures of the exact color i wanted the hi-lights & low-lights & a picture of the length of the cut & style of layers (right below the shoulders at the collar bone, which I even pointed to on my body). She wasn't rude or anything, just not personable/friendly or talkative, no chit chat or small talk...kind of felt uncomfortable, until her assistant (sorry, can't remember her name) came to help. They discussed the color, Teresa did the cut (silently), and then her assistant basically did 90% of the color, while Teresa disappeared. The assistant was plenty talkative & friendly. While I was sitting in the chair processing, Teresa had double booked her time with me, and asked me to move out of her chair so her next client could sit there to get a cut. Ummm....ok, kinda rude, but whatever. After the alarm went off that the processing time was up, the ASSISTANT checked my color, shampooed me, and explained the prodcuts. Only then did Teresa show back up to help with the blow dry & style. So, basically I spent over $250 to have 90% of my appointment with her assistant & for a bottle of shampoo & conditioner. To top it off, the hi-lights & low-lights were not at all the color I asked for (they were okay looking, not hideous, but not at all the color I showed her in the picture, which I unfortunately couldn't really see until it was daylight out the next day since it was dark in the salon at night) & the cut was about 2 inches shorter than I requested. It was just an okay cut...okay layers, but unfortunately it was cut blunt, straight across the back, which I specifically said I did NOT want a block cheese-wedge cut!!!! I've had better cuts at Sam's club, which is sad considering the level of expertise I was expecting. I liked the Diva products a lot, and the assistant was very nice, so I will try going back again, just to a different stylist. I definately did NOT get my moneys worth, wish I could get the tip back

I called the salon on Monday after a VERY unbecoming cut on Saturday. I have curly hair, but had been with the other stylist for about a year and the cuts were OK. Last Saturday, I showed her a photo of what I wanted and cringed as she took thinning shears to my hair. Well, I left that salon on Saturday looking like Bozo. After speaking with the really helpful receptionist, I scheduled a cut with Teresa. It is a difficult thing to take a really bad cut and make it so cute that within an hour of getting to work all of the referral cards I was given were gone!!! Everyone commented on my hair -- I feel younger and chicer than I have in years! Thank you Teresa! I have NEVER had this kind of positive response to a haircut before. I'll be back. And, I'll be bringing my Mom! Teresa listened to me -- told me things about my hair, walked e through the Curly Girl routine (which I thought I had down) and gave really helpful hints on how to keep it from frizzing. Didn't push products (I already use Deva Curl), but made two excellent recommendations. If you have curly hair -- this is the place for you!

Sam is the best stylist I have ever had! I completely trust her. My sister has extremely curly hair and Sam recommended the Salon before she even worked there. My sister had her hair done and I can honestly say it was the best money my sister EVER spent. She gets complements on her hair EVERYDAY! Not only did the staff give her a phenomenal haircut, but they also taught my sister how to care for her hair. It has really changed her life for the better.

I do not have the amazing curly hair that my sister does. But both my husband and I see Sam! She is amazing. She gives you the "best haircuts, EVER," according to my husband. And, he does have curly hair. But she also has a way of giving you advice that you can trust and implement! I am so happy I found her!

My stylist Cheri creates a great cut and color. For years I went to others never finding the right fit. With Cheri I have.I trust her vision in the style she creates for me and the color she invents. My hair looks great,is easy to care for and when family pulls out old pictures I know why I continue to thank Cheri for my look.Thank you.

Carolyn is absolutely the best stylist I have ever had and I would be lost without her! She has had advanced training at Deva in NYC, and it really shows! Carolyn knows how to listen and how to communicate; it is obvious she enjoys her clients.

Laura was fantastic. She was extremely consultative and helpful with her suggestions. She explained the dry curly cut process as she went and the day-to-day techinique. I'm very low maintenance and rolled my eyes at the suggestion of all the scrunching and such. But I figured I'd give it a go. This is about the first time in my 41 years that I've been really excited about a cut. My hair now curls the way I've admired others' curls for years! I had no idea my hair could look like it does. The curls are smooth and defined. Even my ultra unobservant husband complimented me. And this is the next day, when I did it, not the stylist. (The scrunching, et al process Laura assured me wouldn't be that big of a deal really isn't that big of a deal. She kindly offered her time on the phone if I had questions, too.

Four times a year, I travel from Hartford, CT to this salon to see Teresa for a cut and color. She has made my traditionally knotty/frizzy hair look like it should - a headful of luscious curls. She gives her full attention to me when I'm there and my color looks great too! I'd reco her to anyone!

Carolyn at East 42nd Street Salon is the very best at working with curly hair. I saw her for a consult after a bad cut (curly girls get way too many of those), and she gave me a few tips to deal with my hair while the cut was growing out. The tips, just a couple, were great, and helped me like my hair and only want to wear it curly (instead of the fall-back, round-brush blow-out). Then, when my hair had grown a few inches, I went back for a trim, and I'm thrilled. My hair looks fabulous, I love it and I swear it seems like happy hair. Carolyn knows her stuff, and I think she has magic in her hands.

I've been seeing Gen A for facials and eyebrow waxing for over a year, since she was in cosmetology school. She's a recent addition to the salon. I followed her to East 42nd Street Salon, because she's the only one I'll have do my facials. The massage portion of her facial is amazing. And she really knows what products to use so she doesn't irritate my skin. I've never broken out after one of her facials, and that was a common problem with me before I started seeing her. I also have her do my eyebrow waxing. They always look nice when she's done, and she doesn't do them too thin.

Go see Summer!!! She is soooooo amazing...getting a brazilian is about as relaxing as going in for your annual exam, but I think I have found my gal. I felt very comfortable with her from the start, she was efficient and very thorough which is HUGE for me. There is nothing worse than getting a wax job and getting home to find hair left behind!!! So, if you are on the market for a wax gal, you found her.

I'm 53 and up to last year have had maybe 12 haircuts I didn't do myself. I gave up on going to salons after several disasters. My hair is very tight curls but fine. When it's wet I look like I'm balding. I recently got a job where I need to look professional. I despaired of ever having suitable hair but decided to try Carolyn at East 42nd Street. We talked about what I wanted and frankly, I didn't know. I asked her to do what she thought best. She did a dry cut and chose a shape I'd never considered before. Then she showed me how to work with it. I got more compliments on my hair in the next few months than I have in my life time. I can hold my own with the "power cuts" at work. I'm still learning how to handle it, but I love it. I don't live in Minneapolis and have to drive a ways to get a cut but it's well worth it. My sister and son (also curlies) go to Carolyn as well. We heartily recommend her!

I have curly hair. I tried East 42nd for the first time a while ago because they claim to be the place to go for curly hair. I thought the cut was OK and the service was fair (somewhat pretentious and I-know-better-than you) - and I felt extremely rushed. When I scheduled my appointment, I mentioned that my hair often took a long time to cut. They said not to worry (they're "professionals") etc. I went in, and things were fine until about halfway through the cut when the stylist realized just how much hair I have. (I'm sorry, I don't TRY to annoy you by having thick hair). Alas, I chalked it up to the fact that their designation as a "curly hair" salon was relatively new.

So, I went in a second and third time (hoping that maybe, with some more practice on curly hair - they'd be more comfortable and better able to give me a "good" cut. On each subsequent visit - the cut got worse and was accompanied by the most pretentious attitude I've ever experienced. I came home and cried after the last cut because (1) it was extremely uneven (to the extent that co-workers and friends noticed without me pointing it out - like, inches uneven) and (2) the stylist (Theresa) made me feel so uncomfortable. She seemed to know very little about curly hair.

She took no steps to make me feel comfortable or to listen to my concerns/questions. In fact, she simply looked angry No attempt at small talk. No assessment of my hair type or how much time I'm willing to spend on my hair. Nothing. I found myself saying I was sorry I had thick hair, and all she did was give me exasperated and exhausted sighs. Yep. Fun times.

The optimistic (perhaps masochistic) part of me wants to give it "one more try" (I haven't found another place that does dry cuts), but I'm pretty darn sure I'd be very disappointed. Maybe I should avoid letting folks with straight hair cut my curly hair.

I have been going to Teresa's salon, the East 42nd Street Salon, since it actually was on East 42nd street. I have hard hair to cut. It is thick in back, very, very thin at the temples, and wavey, but just on one side. It is also thin and fly away. I had pretty much given up on getting a decent cut - I figured I just had bad hair. And then I went to Teresa. I looked great on my very first hair cut! It was unbelievable! I've had her do lots of different cuts since I've been going there, and have only been disapointed in one. It was a cut that I had picked out of a book that didn't look good with my jar line. She gave me a new cut for free, which I thought was really nice.

I just now got back from the salon, and I could not be happier with the way I look. I just told her I wanted it super short and cute, and I got a unique, great looking cut that goes perfectly with my face and my no-fuss lifestyle. If you have not been able to find anyone who could do something with your hair, then try Teresa. Honestly, I think she's magic or something.

The salon itself is a nice, big airy space. There is always parking in front, right on Nicollet, and now that the 50th street bridge is opened back up it is very easy to get to from the other side of the freeway.

Pros: great cut, location, nice space.

I have been a customer of Teresa's for over 10 years, but I can never remember the phone number so I come to this site to get the number. That is when I noticed the review that someone was unhappy with her cut. So I just wanted to say that I have always been happy with Teresa's cuts, and love her personality. Every time I get a great cut and she makes me laugh. I tell you it is a good combination laughter and a good cut. I also have had Amanda do my manicures, and I appreciate her soft touch. I have been to places where they are so rough, so rough that it is painful, so it is refreshing to get a manicure that is painless. I would recommend this salon, and definitely try the massage from Ned HE IS THE BOMB!!!!!

I had tried Ouidad (a curly hair salon in New York) and was not impressed. I have searched for stylist after stylist to cut my hair, and my journey ended at East 42nd Street Salon. I read ALL the review on citysearch and decided to give Teresa a try, and I'm telling you it is the BEST HAIRCUT I've ever had. Teresa really communicated with me and gave me some styling tips that were very helpful. She also told me that not one technique is for everyone. Ouidad has their following, and even though I did not like the cut they gave me, she said that there are people that just love them.
I'm really glad that I found East 42nd Street Salon and Teresa. I love the way she cut my hair and I would definitely go again. The staff is very friendly, and I had my brows and lash tinted by Natalie. She is also very awwwwwwwwsom.

I went to this salon based on the CitySearch positive reviews and the fact that they are promoting themselves as curly hair specialists. I am extremely disappointed in the level of service I received and the results of three haircuts from Teresa, the owner of the salon.

Like many people with naturally curly or wavy hair, it's been a challenge for me to find a stylist who not only loves my hair but also knows how to cut it and doesn't make comments about how difficult it is. My impression of this salon is that they have tried to find a niche in this area, have taken some specialized training but don't yet really have the experience or knowhow to cut curly and wavy hair beyond cookbook methods. I have this sense that the positive reviews on this web site are based on a certain level of relief that someone is paying attention to curly hair versus the actual quality of the haircuts.

Not once in the three cuts that I had with Teresa did she actually work with her initial cut and tweak it based on how my hair was reacting, curling or not curling in particular areas. The result is a cut that is bunching up in unflattering ways, in spite of my request for her to address those areas in subsequent cuts.

As a result, I will not be returning to this salon and don't recommend it for others with curly, thick or wavy hair who want a stylish cut beyond the basics.

Pros: Great hours including Sundays

Cons: Didn't listen to what I wanted (or didn't know how to do it), poor communication skills, uncomfortable waiting area

I'm here to talk about NATALIE and ... you guessed it... the hair 'down there'. I'm 45, divorced, and have had one LTR since my divorce. Then there was a 2 year hiatus, and then.... I met a hottie fireman. He was so 'well-groomed' (i.e. 'manscaped') that I started to feel self-concious about my unkempt downtown area. Being the otherwise hip and trendy girl that I like to think I am, I decided to GO FOR IT and join the bald pelvises (kind of like the flying elvises, but without hair). Logistics aside (how DO they do that?) I needed to get over my fear and face the fact that if I really wanted to do this, someone other than the fireman would be getting a really good look at my hoo hoo. So I went online and found the e 42nd street salon. To protect her privacy, I won't say who answered the phone, but she was an angel. She told me not to be scared and that Natalie would take good care of me. And when I asked her if SHE had tried it, she did not hesitate to share with me that she had and thought it was great. That 's what convinced me. Don't get me wrong. If you're REALLY shy you are not gonna be comfortable with your bare butt in the air, but if you can laugh at yourself (and maybe have a drink before you go) you will NOT be disappointed. It's only been 24 hours so I'm still not sure what to do with myself (besides stare), but WOW I don't know how Natalie did it. Well, yes I do. She took 90 MINUTES of painstaking care to get every last hair OUT of there. I was a MAJOR project. She even tried a few different landscaping ideas out before recommending that we take off the whole chalupa. Who else would take that much time and care?? I'm going back in 3 weeks . That's when the (bald) eagle will be landing. (fireman is from out of town). Too much information? Maybe. .. but you're still reading... right? So go get your great curly haircut from Nancy, but don't neglect the hair down there. Natalie is the best. Professional, meticulous, and yes, fun:)

I went in with a fuzzy head of curly hair and let Theresa go at it. This is, by far..the BEST haircut I have EVER had!! This new method of cutting curly hair is wonderful and Theresa knows just what to do for your hair..after looking at it and asking YOU what you would like.
It will be much easier for me to get there after the road construction is done, but the extra travel time is definitely worth it.
I also had my eyebrows waxed by Summer and they are wonderful. I never had a person spend that much time fixing my brows. I am going back soon to try a facial!
This is definitely a wonderful place for curly headed girls to go..but even if you don't have curly hair, I know you would get a wonderful result. Lets spread the word to get this place going and keep it for us 'special gals"...laughing.

I have been to this salon twice for haircuts and have left completely satisfied both times. Cheri has done a really great job with cutting and styling my somewhat difficult hair! She listens to how I want my hair styled and then surpasses my expectations. I appreciate her gentle touch, her kind personality and her willingness to take her time while styling my hair (instead of just rushing through). She also teaches me how to style my hair. at home She has also cut my teenage daughter's hair. My daughter absolutely adores her. In fact, my daughter is the one who recommended Cheri to me! Nice setting and a very reasonable price too!

i wrote a bad review for this salon a couple years ago, and just happened across its page again today and i have to say, these reviews are suspicious. every time there's a less perfect review, there are 2-4 reviews within days that knock the bad review off the top of the first page, and then there are months to a year between reviews. very strange... i haven't gone back since my terrible and overpriced experienced and i never will.

Sweet place with sweet people.
What I remember most is how fantastic Carolyn, not sure on spelling; is. What amazing talent cutting, styling my hair! She made my hair do things that I didn't even know it could. What talent. You should be on one of those hair genius TV shows, showing off your talent.
I am not an expert but she took the time and showed me how to do it my self at home too. Great gal, Carolyn!!!!

I visited the 42nd Street Salon after reading reviews from other users on this site. I had been straightening my hair for 35 years ( I'm 50 years old ) and had come to the end of my rope as far as trying to pretend I had staight hair. I was tired of running from door way to door way on humid days, never going to the Boundry Waters because there was no electricity for my hairdryer, getting a wedding invitation for August and exclaiming " August?! What about my hair?" The crowning moment in my revelation was when my husband and I went to Germany and I started my hairdryer on fire the first time I used it. My mouth was open in shock for approximately 15 minutes as I pondered two weeks without my partner in crime. Enough.......I've had it........I'm done.
So, my search began for acceptance of my curls. One year later I finally had memorized the Curly Girl book, but still couldn't find a way to deal with my hair. Enter Theresa at 42nd Street. I sat down in the chair, told her I had never been a good judge of what looked good on me as far as my hair went, and told her to do what she wanted. A total leap of faith for me---you have NO idea! She cut it dry and I saw her do things with my hair that no other hair stylist had ever done. And I have to tell you........I LOVE MY HAIR!!!!!!! I've never actually said that before...it felt funny coming out of my mouth. My family and friends have been complimenting me on my hair like crazy. It literally takes about three minutes to style and I'm out the door. I know it sounds crazy, but I think about how my hair has held me back all these years and now I'm all about traveling to Florida, doing the "pack light" trips without a seperate carry on for my hairdryer and round brushes, etc. Free at last! Free at last! I highly recommend Theresa at 42nd Street , and please go in with the attitude that today you're changing your life via your hair......something that I think we 'curly girls' understand!

Theresa was able to understand exactly what I had in mind for my little son's (curly, shaggy, preschool) hair style and gave him his best haircut yet. We're so happy to have found her - she's a real professional and very talented at what she does. I was so impressed that I went in a week later for a haircut of my own. She was very knowledgeable about how to make the most of my curls and I can honestly say that this is the best my hair has looked in 10 years. The staff was friendly and supportive and you could tell as other clients came and went for their appointments that they were loyal to the salon for good reasons. Great job! Very professional and stylish salon - I'm really looking forward to coming back for some of the skin treatments too. Bottom line - If you want your curly hair to look good, whether it's springy and tight or weak and wavy like mine was; Theresa is THE stylist to see. Thank you!!

I just went back to E 42nd Street Salon for a second hair cut. My hair is curly and it has been difficult to find a stylist who really knows how to cut my hair. The first time I went in, Carolyn cut my hair and showed me how to care for it. She cut it dry, which was a first for me. But I loved it. The second time I went in, Teresa cut my hair. She cut it wet and the style is just as good as my first cut. The Deva Concepts products really make a difference for me. I love my curls now and won't blow-dry them smooth again!

The salon is nice and my hair looks good, but the stylist (Carolyn) doesn't really listen to my requests. I've been to her a few times and it's as though she is going to do what she wants to do regardless of what I say because she knows better. I went in for a trim and when I commented on how short it was she said no it's not. If you don't have a haircut in mind when you go in and have an extra hour and 45 mins to spend she's a good stylist.

I have curly hair. Until I read the book CURLY GIRL, I tried to pretend I didn't. I've been using Massey's techniques as best I can for the past two years or so with decent results. What was missing was a stylist who understood them. Imagine my joy when I discovered that Carolyn, at East 42nd Street Salon, had been TRAINED in Massey's techniques. I called for an appointment immediately, and boy, am I happy I did. She not only gave me the best cut I've ever had (curly or "straight"), but she gave me "how tos" in a number of areas of curly hair care. On top of which, she is very warm and personable and very easy to talk to. Forget 5 stars, as far as stylists go, I'd give her a perfect 10.

It's been over a week and I am very happy with everything: hair cut, location, cost, and the atmosphere of the salon. I have never gotten so many compliments on my haircut as I have this time around. Even from complete strangers. Angie was a great stylist. She really listens and also gives feed back. Very honest which I appreciate. I'll be back in a few months. See you soon, Angie!

She really has an eye for color and shape. On the same day I got a haircut from Cheri. Cheri is the most

Cheri has been my stylist for over one year now. I allow her to come up with a design plan and color of her choice as she is the expert. She has not failed me yet. Recently I decided to use the salons other services and had Desiree give me a brow wax and tint. Then she took it a step further and I had her give me lash extensions. They look natural , feel great and I wish I had done this sooner. Desiree was great !

It was quite an experience for me. Imagine a woman at the age of 45 with long hair, which she had last cut short at the age of 27, that would be me! I was scared to death, literally shaking when I came to the salon to have my hair cut short because of the hair loss problems. But I was absolutely blessed to have it done by Teresa, a real professional! I saw her working on the other client and it totally made me trust her. I drew a picture of the style that I used to have, when I was younger and she made a tatal replica of the haircut I used to have, as if it had been done by my own stylist. Though at the end , when I was very happy with the result, she , like a real stylist, expressed her own oppinion too: what she would like to make it in a little bit different way next time, if I would let her do that. I am so glad I found her, as my hair style is not a very usual one and together with this it demands a very good quality hairdresser to cut it right.

I was so disappointed with my haircuts and was unable to find a good stylist no matter how much I paid. I was referred to Nancy by a very good friend and fell in love with her right away. It can take years to find a great stylist and when you do, you will follow them to the ends of the earth to get that perfect cut. She not only makes you look great, she is the most personable stylist I have ever had. Everyone at East 42nd Street Salon is friendly and helpul. And the shampoo sinks are to die for, so comfy you could take a nap!!!!

I want to second the last review about Nancy. She is truly an artist when it comes to hair, not only cutting it but coloring it as well. I have a certain way I like my hair, tousled, you might say, and Nancy helps me pull that off with precision, style, and age appropriate flair. (I am in my mid-fifties and I look styling!) She also cuts my son's hair and she relates to kids well. I highly recommend Nancy to take care of your hair needs. You will get the look you want or if you are searching for a new one she will help you figure it out.

Nancy at the East 42nd St Salon is incredible. She's an artist really! She's done my hair for more than a decade now. It's always flawless! She aims for perfection and achieves it. Always! You'll not find a more skilled professional in the Twin Cities. To say that I recommend her is an understatement. She's a professional's professional at the very top of her game. By the way, she knows a lot about wine too, and she's very smart on lots of topics.
