Everything here is pretty good, but not great. Good food, good drinks, and a decent staff. It can get crowded later at night, but that can be a good thing depending on what you're looking for

I have been here twice, and both times, was not happy. The bartenders were not very friendly, and the food, wasn't that great. It took a long time to come out and I just wasn't please at all.

After making reservations for 10:00 pm for a party of 15 on a Wednesday night, they decided to close the restaurant at 11:00 pm. As the website said they closed at 2:00 am, we asked why they were closing so early, they stated because of the crowd. Since we were pretty much the only group in there, they felt it necessary to close down. I wouldn't have had a problem with this, however they should have at LEAST let us know on the phone, before I had made the reservations for 10:00.

Some of the group came in at 9:30 (before the reserved time of 10:00), instead of waiting at the table they had reserved for us they decided just to go to the bar and order drinks. They would not let them order anything at the bar if they were there for reservations. The group explained they were half an hour early, they continuously said that they had to sit down at their reserved table and just wait for the waitress. We did this multiple times just to get a quick drink, only to be turned away.

The staff didn't know much about the menu at all. I had seen on their website that it was $3 margaritas on Wednesday, when I had asked about that they stated there was no such thing written like that on their website. Of course when I looked at the website the next day, it didn't exist and I know it was on there before.

Unfortunately their guacamole was VERY good, but I will not be returning to support this restaurant. Based on how we were treated and how they clearly did not want our service, there is no way a restaurant like this will be able to stay in business for much longer.

Went here to sit outside and have a drink. They close down the outside seating after about 10. I asked why, they said crowd control. Humm, I wonder why all the other outdoor patios are open, is the staff here really that stupid that they cannot control outdoor seating? They serve $1 Dos X's on a Friday night, too bad you have to drink it inside on a perfect summer night.

I decided to take my girlfriend to Bar Abilene because they are famous for two of her favorite things, guacamole and margaritas. She always makes guac at home so I trust her opinion, and she said the guac was the best restuarant guac she has had but it could have done without the roasted garlic. Personally, I loved it. We got there around 11 on Friday night, paid $9 for parking across the street. It wasn't too crowded at all when we got there, but of course that would change after midnight. We took our seats at a booth that was both out of the way and in the mix - if that makes sense. Service was prompt and everything was delivered to us very quickly. Decor was chic and inviting, but I was surprised to see the TVs both displaying a Fox Sports Net fishing show, it was so out of place it was comical.

Almost everything (including the Margaritas), was priced between $7.95 and $12.95. The tequila list was extensive, with one shot flights ranging from $6 to $8. Most of the margaritas came in regular glasses with cubed ice, which was a little surprising. I tried the Tejas and the Dirty Rita, and they were both sub-par. The Dirty Rita was supposed to have a "splash" of olive juice, but it tasted like it was 1/4 olive juice, 3/4 margarita mix. My girlfriend had the Margarjito (sp?) and the Green Iguana, both were better than the two I tried, but none of them were anything to brag about. After we finished the $9.95 guac we ordered some real food. I tried the bbq shrimp tacos. Unfortunately, they were probably the worst tacos I ever had. I love mexican food and I'm usually not very picky, but I only managed to finish 2 bites of one. For $9.95 for only two small tacos and a little beans and rice, I was a bit dissapointed. My girlfriend had the tortilla soup, which again was underwhelming.

Luckily, a few things were half off because of happy hour, so we didn't spend as much as I thought we were going to. All in all we had four margaritas, two entrees, and an order of guac for $50, about $25 less than it otherwise would have been.

If you like tequila and you like guac, this is a cool place. It also seemed to be a pretty good place for singles, although the crowd started to get a little "fratboy-ish" as it got later into the evening. If I ever go back, I won't be eating anything but the guac and I'll probably skip the margaritas and sample more of the extensive tequila selection.

Some nights the bar has 1/2 off wine & appetizers. The taquitos aren't the best but the other appetizers are really good. The staff is super friendly & the atmosphere is really nice. They play a good mix of music also! I would definitely recommend this restaurant/bar!

I've been a big fan of Bar Abilene in the past. Love their Margaritas, and other food items. However, Today I was quite disappointed. It's father's day. We decided that we would go there for brunch. The food was good, Glassware was dirty though. The wait staff was professional, quick and attentive. My disappointment came in when we got the bill. $15.95 per person for a normally $12.95 brunch. They had their normal sign up outside saying "$12.95 all you can eat brunch". So we took it. Only to get our bill and see they added three extra dollars per person. We did ask the wait person we had if they had different items for brunch today. They replied.. "I don't know" As far as I could tell, it was their normal brunch. So, We talked with the Mgr. he was not polite or professional at all. His reply to it "It's a holiday". Um, Yes.. it's father's day but no where have I read that it costs more on holidays. Plus, they had their normal $12.95 sign outside the door. Bait and switch tactic with no apology or care in the world. He would not answer any questions on if the food was different or anything. Just kept on saying it's a holiday. We told him he needs to remove his sign today because it's not correct. Every person in there was scammed as far as I'm concerned today. I didn't like the way he treated us, nor did I like his comments on "It's a holiday" and leaving it at that as if we should know although their sign says differently. I don't appreciate businesses taking advantage of people in this way.

Food is normally good, Stay away during holidays that fall on a sunday.

This is my favorite place to go out in the Twin Cities. The drinks, food, music, and crowd combine to create unforgettable nights time and time again. If you're looking for a margarita recommendation, try the Latin Lover. Make sure to order the guacamole (they make it tableside). Bar Abilene mixes a southwestern feel with an urban twist. The bar can get incredibly packed on Friday nights making a bit difficult to maneuver, especially if in a group. But, the bartenders are attentive, quick, and enjoy talking to their customers which usually guarantees that you will feel welcome and won't have to wait long for a drink. The guacamole and mashed potato tapas are also two things to try next time you are in.

I was excited to try the multitude of tacos.
I was bored.
While I ordered three different types, they all tasted the same.
They were fish, chicken and beef. None were too hot or too mild.
Not too exciting.

I did enjoy the magaritas and would recommend only them.

I spend a lot of time in the Uptown area and this place is definitely the best around. I have been there several times for both dinner and the night life and have had great experiences every time. The food is great, you must try the tableside guacamole. Also, they have great margaritas and I have had wonderful service each time. The night life is great too, I highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a fun time.

We haven't been to Bar Abilene in a couple of years and thought we would try it again. We were very disappointed. The chop salad we shared was soggy, the tuna dish was far too chewey and the black bean enchiladas were bland and overcooked. It tasted like much of the food was pre-made and then heated up. The beer was good and our server was quite nice. Unfortunately, we will not return.

My friend and I visited Bar Abilene on a Sunday evening. The restaurant was fairly empty, so I would have expected decent service. However, from the beginning our service was horrible. We waited at least five minutes before we were even greeted at our table. Our drinks often sat empty on our table, with no server even checking to see if we wanted more. We ordered their "famous" gaucamole made at your table and received chips but no gaucamole for 15 min. Our food took quite awhile considering how busy the restaurant was. I ordered the fajitas and the peppers and onions were still raw. With how long the food took you'd think it would at least be cooked completely. When we finished our food we waited at our table for a good 20 min. before we were able to ask for our check. I have been to Bar Abilene in the past and had a good experince but this experience will definately make me think twice before going back!

Usually if it's a good restaurant, it's probably not a great bar scene, and vice versa, but this place defies logic and is both a great restaurant and a great bar scene! The guacamole is absolutely to die for (well, almost) and although I dont remember the specific dishes we all had, I do remember that all of my friends loved the food and there were no complaints in the whole group. The place turns from a restaurant into a bar/lounge with dancing at night around 10 or so and is a great place to meet other (relatively) attractive singles! If you don't want to dance, there are plenty of tables around for you to sit and chill with your friends. The dance floor is kinda small but the music is usually pretty decent (if you like rap/hip-hop/pop/oldies but goodies kinda music, which I do).

For dinner, this place is great- its loud, energetic, and entertaining with fantastic food and drinks (50 kinds of margaritas and the best tequila selection in town). For the Friday Saturday late night crowd- no thank you. Let me explain: If you want a good meal and a fun time from open until 10 pm- then I would defiantly recommend it! But the late night bar crowd is less to be desired. Its a bunch of young kids who drink way too much- it gets old if youre not into the drink till you're sick seen. But I cant hold their late night draw against them- the dinner experience is too much fun! I love their guacamole- they make it right at the table for you! Thats cool!

We took the fam who was visiting from out of town for brunch. For $11 all-you-care-to-eat brunch, I'm not sure you can find a better value in the city. We got there early, and the food was really good. Fajitas (pork and tofu), waffles, eggs, fresh-made omlettes, sausage and biscuits, fruits, and plenty of sweets! The food was good-quality, all veggies and fruits were ripe, and nothing tasted 'out of the box'. Also, the $3 bloody mary was a good deal. We'll definately be back. Receipts had coupons for buy-one-get-one brunch buffets, so next time will be even better.
Kids eat free, but I'd get there beforer noon, or there may be a wait.

I went on a Saturday evening. Busy and noisy. Food is great. Calamari is a must try, along with the steak for dinner. Our waiter was a space cadet and was always out there somewhere, but not on earth. He missed fired our meals so our app came out at the same time as our dinner. I was willing to forgive, but when I told him at the beginning we needed separate checks and he could not get it right that was it. When youre paying the money their asking for the service has to be better. I will give it one another try.

I went here for dinner with a group of people. The margaritas were delicious; however most of the drinks were a bit over priced. The food and service were just average. The tableside guacamole tasted more like deviled eggs than guacamole, and the fajitas were not the worst or the best that I have ever had. The whole experience was just OK.

The tableside guacamole tasted more like deviled eggs than guacamole, and the fajitas were not the worst or the best that I have ever had. The whole experience was just OK.

.

The waitress was rude all night. She put down our tab without even asking us if we were ready for it. Then she screwed up the bill and charged someone elses bill to my credit card! The service is awful...

Drinks are pricey but very good for a few cocktails before heading elsewhere. I'd suggest a margarita or mojito or one of the specialty drinks. I was SHOCKED but BA sells jello shots. I don't know if this is a usual thing but it's fun and unique so I thought I'd write it. This is not a place I'd like to spend an entire night out at but it's worth a visit if you're in the new Greek System Central, aka Uptown. Downtown is the old NE (pretty ghetto but cool spots), Uptown is the new DT (Frat boys, people trying too hard to be cool, albeit, there are a few good spots left), and NE is the new uptown (cool, unique, all walks of life...)

Ive been here for dinner, happy hour, and brunch and have never been disappionted. You wouldn't think this place would have a good brunch but it is great. Price is good, they make whatever omletts you want, and they have a ton of other breakfast food, some with a tex-mex flavor to it like the sausage. Good tap beer selection. Dinner is crowded on Friday nights, so be prepared to wait. Did they get rid of the free chips and salsa though?

This is a great bar for all types of people, even kids, they eat for free all the time!!! The food and drinks are fantastic. One of the only bars that has dancing at night, Mon, Thurs, Fri, and Sat, I think. This is one of my favorite places to go. The food and service has improved over the past year. If you didn't like it the first time I suggest that you try it again.

Two words: tableside guac.
They bring all the stuff to the table and mash it all together. Greeny deliciousness.

The western motif is not my thing, but it does go with their other specialty - the dirty margarita.

PROS: great appetizers, decent drinks
CONS: cowhide

Best Sunday Breakfast Buffet in Twin Cities area, and for only $10.95 it is also the best deal in town. You will NOT be dissapointed.

Great for after movie chats and drinks. I love the BBQ chicken pizza- tasty combination of chicken and beans. We always get the tableside guac, delicious food with a show to boot. I enjoy the chicken fajitas, surely not the same as everyone else. More original and tasty sides and moist chicken. The deserts are great too, especially the Ancho Diablo Cake. The drinks are pricy, but worth it. I love the mojito and the sunburned seniorita.

I went to Bar Abilene last night with my husband and a couple friends for a birthday and was blown away. The service was exceptional and the food was superb. Luke did an exceptional job guiding us through the menu and intruduced us to the world of tequilla. We will be back!!!

Before a matinee movie at the Lagoon, we stopped by for Sunday brunch. We got our drinks and that's the last we saw of the waitress. We had to ask at the hostess stand for our check so we wouldn't miss the start of our movie. As we hurried next door to the theater we saw our waitress outside smoking. It's McDonalds next time we go to the 'Goon.

I had been to Bar Abilene before for happy hour and appetizers. I'd liked the tequilla flights, the excruciatingly overpriced guacamole and the tastey potato flautas. But this time we went for dinner and the place was having a weird identity crisis combined with below par food and sub service. This was on a Sunday evening and very slow. The walls were covered with western motif and sports crap. a longhorn with a basketball on it's head and a NCAA bracket poster? This was during march maddness, but come on. The flautas were good, when they came AFTER our entrees. The pork loin was overcooked and underspiced and Chipotle makes a 10x better burrito. Our server was unconcered with the fact she forgot our app and drinks. If the food tasted as good as the hickory scented air, i might consider coming back.

The drinks can't be beaten, the food is beautiful and creative and the service is great. Sure, it is trendy, loud and crowded, but that is why I go. Quieter times can be found at non-happy hour times and in the dining room (as opposed to the bar/lounge). The waitstaff is very friendly--they comped us an appetizer simply for being there for a few hours, and on a different occasion the chef, Tom Gladbach, comped us an entree for sending him a hello message after we had taken a cooking class with him.

I don't care what that docs office upstairs says. Those smoked tomatos are wonderful and that aroma pulls me in even more than the woodroasting smell from the restaurant down the street.
The Chicken nachos - simple and perfect.

And once I saw Paul Wellstone there having dinner with his wife and and some friends. Can't get a better review than that.

The food is great, service is pretty good, the drinks are well mixed... but it all comes at a price. It's very expensive. Maybe when i'm rich i'll be a regular, but i don't know if the prices are worth it for the average Joe.

Great waitstaff. If you're not into elbow-to-elbow crowds, avoid their 'hospitality nites' when the service industry drinks cheaply...Mondays, I believe. Great place to sit out on the patio in warmer weather. Atmosphere = spicey in the summer & cozy in the winter. GREAT BLOODYS!! Must try: guac dip, even if you think you hate avocados. This place is a great place to go for a laid-back atmosphere when you're tired of every other trendy joint in the area - still enough of a fun crowd to keep it entertaining.

I went here with my sisters for the first time the other night. The place was dead but somehow the service managed to be slow. We were also extremely dissapointed with the food. The fajitas were bland and the chips were way too salty. The margaritas were good but way overpriced. I will not be returning....

The margaritas are pretty good, the food is great from what I have ordered -- particularly the guacamole. Just such lousy service - can't believe some of the wait staff - just plain rude. Too bad.

A friend and I went to Bar Abilene after a movie and got a full dinner at around 12 am! that in itself is fabulous, but the fact that the food was actually decent at that hour was something rare and noteworthy. Our service was outstanding. The waitress was knowledgeable about the food and courteous and professional without being stuffy or pretentious. She even talked us in to sharing a "flight" of some very exotic tequilas. we washed that down with the best margaritas either of us have ever had. I would definately go there again.

I took a first date to this restaurant and I must admit, it fell a bit short of my expectations. The service was lousy - our waitress seemed snobby and very impatient with us. The atmosphere certainly was appealing to the eye, but it was so loud that it became difficult to have a good conversation. The food was good and the presentation of my meal was excellent - but we were both rather surprised when the waitress responded to our request for bread with "we don't do that here." From the reviews I had heard in the past, I wondered if this was the same restaurant.

If your looking for options and flavor, this is the place to go for an incredible variety of margaritas. Looking for something fruity? You name your fruit. Something a little rougher? Dirty margarita is a fine option blending the best of the worlds of martinis and margaritas. Ambience is decent for mpls. A place to go with friends and no expectations.
