I have been a patron since over 20 years ago. I loved it then and even celebrated my law school graduation there. I haven't been recently after having a mediocre experience about a year ago. I knew it had changed hands but thought I should

3rd time there. I wanna like it. It's cute. Comfy. Romantic, even. Alas, the food is boring if not wrong. Two of our four dishes were SO SALTY that I feel dehydrated. My tongue is terry cloth. Why did I eat it? Why didn't I send it back? I

We had been to El Meson before, but not for a long time. We found the food as we remembered it--full of flavors and ingredients we don't find regularly, and prepared well. The prices seemed reasonable, and we enjoyed the house-made sangria on a warm evening.

The downside was the service. We would sit for a long time before being attended to--before our order, after appetizers, when we were ready to go. If they could upgrade their service, we would return more often.

My wife and I tried El Meson last night for the first time. We were both excited as it seemed like a unique menu. The food however was pretty run of the mill. We tried two tapas, the Serrano, and the Quesillo. Both dishes were bland and undersized for the price. For our entrees, my wife had a shrimp dish with a spicy pepper sauce and plantains, the sauce was extremely tasty. I had the "Spanish Pot Roast". The beef was fatty and stringy, and the sauce tasted like canned tomato sauce. For 75 bucks, I expected a lot more than what we got. I might go back some day, but for now El Meson makes the "not worth the price" list.

The menu was sufficiently interesting and the food was good enough to warrant a second visit. However, the service was not. The waiter seemed quite indifferent to our presence. As just some examples, we were not asked for drink or appetizer orders, he watched our food be plated by the chef and THEN went to take an order for another table, we were not acknowledged on our way out by anyone. And this was NOT a busy time: only 4-5 tables seated. We do appreciate good food but also expect the service to match when dining out. There was a clear mismatch at El Meson and given the many other choices in the neighborhood, we won't be back.

Great atmosphere, great tapas menu. They have great nightly specials - if you love something you might never see it again. We love the sangria, too!

Pros: jambalaya

Cons: they don't always serve the jambalaya

A delightful combination of traditional spanish entrees, like paella, with contemporary caribbean flavors. El meson also offers an impressive wine list to complement the exotic flavors. Start with the peras, they're the bomb.

El Meson is one of my favorite spots in town. The food is always great as well as the service, they are so personable. I love the tapa menu and there great wine list, with some really wonderful Spanish and South American wines and you can't beat the 1/2 price bottles Sun-Thurs. Try and go on a saturday night when they have the Flamenco music. You feel like you have stepped out of Minneapolis and into a cozy little restaurant in Spain!

I spent my New Year's Eve in the company of good friends at El Meson. I had a such a fantastic experience from the attentive service to the excellent food to the live flamenco music. They had a special holiday menu which featured an imaginative variety of entrees, salads and appetizers. The "Borrego" - lamb - caught my eye as it was marinated in cinnamon and paprika and served with roasted red pepper mashed potatoes and asparagus. Every bite was so savory and rich, it was disappointing when my plate was empty.
I have been to El Meson quite a few times over the past couple of years and have always been treated so well by the staff and have never been disappointed in anything.

I used to go to El Meson years ago and I thought the food was pretty good. But when it was bought by Erin Ungerman and Hector Ruiz it suddenly became my favorite restaurant in the Twin Cities. A average decor was transformed into a beautifully simple yet elegant atmosphere where you can lose yourself in the bold, vibrant colors. Of course the best thing is the food. I love the lunch buffet! There are the succulent pork ribs and the wonderful wings. The fresh rice pudding is always my favorite way of ending a delicious lunch. At dinner time I love the Arroz Con Camarones and the mouthwatering Arroz Con Mariscos. You will not regret your visit there, I promise. I'll be back again and again!

El Meson has an ambiance perfect for dining with a sweetheart or visiting with a group of good friends. The servers are pleasant and accomodating. The food is absolutely delicious--from the bread, to the tapas, to the entrees. The paella is absolutely wonderful and worth the wait. The scallops are fabulous; the rice dishes consistently delicious and flavorful. El Meson's lunch buffet is an incredible value with a fantastic variety of delicious entrees, fruits, salads and desserts (and delectable ribs!) It's obvious that great care is given in choosing wines. The superb sangria on a warm summer night coupled with a fresh and flavorful seafood entree is a divine South Minneapolis dining experience. The fabulous white chocolate bread pudding or above-average key lime pie may encourage you to follow dinner with a walk around Lake Harriet.

In my dining experience at El Meson, I encountered a unique yet brilliant marriage of cultural integrity and culinary delight. True to Spanish and Caribbean mores, warmth was not limited to the charming ambiance or the piping hot food, but was also genuinely personified as ?afectuoso? by the restaurant staff. I plan to return to El Meson again and would positively become a regular if I lived closer, but I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an experience with authentic and robust appeal to all five senses! (Not to mention appeal to the pocketbook: meals are very reasonably priced and you won't want to miss out on the half-price bottles of wine Sun-Thu!)

I have been going to El Meson for over three years. With half-priced bottles of wine (mostly Spanish wines) and $5 off carafes of sangria on Sunday-Thursday, the price points can't be beat. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to offer any advice if needed. Not that advice is needed, all the food is delicious. The flavors are bold and unique, unlike any other restaurants that I have been to. The cozy booths are perfect for an intimate dinner or lively conversation. If you let them know that you will be celebrating a special occasion, they are more than happy to do their best to accommodate you. I highly recommend this place to anyone that wants something out of the norm.

I have been to El Meson numerous times in the past few years and have always had very positive experiences. My family enjoyed it so much that my husband and I have invited different groups of friends to join us for dinner there. It is refreshing to have unique menu selections and wines that you can't find at other restaurants. We especially enjoy the selection of tapas and my favorite main course is definitely the scallops. They have always been prepared to perfection and come with very tasty julienne vegetables along with a pineapple salsa garnish. Incredibly good!!!! They also have a great wine selection -- with many reasonably priced. We've always had excellent service at the restaurant and it has a very warm atmosphere. One of our favorite places to go!

Our family has been going to El Meson for a few years now and it has always been considered one of our "go-to" restaurants. The 4 of us can get exactly what we want...my husband and kids can get their spicy food, while I can keep mine milder. It is a great compromise.

My kids are 11 and 9 and super picky eaters....they love, love, love the Arroz Con Pollo. It is amazing to watch them inhale their dinners, when every other night we struggle with them. We have even ordered extra to take home.

All of us have found "favorites" on the menu and for my husband and me, the overall ambiance makes each visit there feel like a date (even with the kids along!).

It's a gem of a restaurant, enjoy!

The new decor lightens everything up. The food is still as wonderful. Our favorites include the scallops and the paella. Love the tapas menu for a lighter option, especially the queso frito. Delicious brulee. Fantastic wine list. One of our neighborhood favorites.

El Meson is a great place to drop in for a healthy, creative, generous lunch buffet, or you can order from the regular menu. I love to go there when I'm running late for a lunch, and the buffet is still available until 2 PM at least. I see the faces of people who return regularly, and love the service as well as the food. We've had wonderful evenings outside in warm weather, enjoying their creative, fresh Latin American dishes and good wines. Check it out!!

Great, friendly service. The staff is very helpful with menu suggestions. Arroz con poyo (chicken) is my favorite. I like spicier food and they were able to adjust it to my spice level. Awesome food, great wine selection, and nice change of pace from the typical dinner fare out there.

Fare:I am a huge fan of red wine and think that a great way to serve it is as Sangria- a chilled red with tons of delicious crunchy fruit. The flavors of the wine and the flavors of the fruit play off each other nicely.

Price: This place is not cheap, but completely worth it for the great food.

My girlfriend and I had driven by this place many times but never went in. Originally we thought it was a high end Mexican restaurant from just driving by it. We realized it wasn't when we saw the pitchers of sangria and plates of paella.
The food was good but it wasn't out of this world. I had the petite filet and my girlfriend had the special, which were scallops. The scallops were great but the sweet potatoes with my steak just didn't go. Next time I am going to get the paella, it looked great! For desert we had the mango brulee, it was really great and I normally don't like brulee.
What set this place apart was the great authentic service and ambience. It felt like a cave in Spain where you would see flamenco dancers perform. They also had live music that was very relaxing. Overall, very great experience and will be back soon.

I just returned from what may have been the worst food experience I have had in several years - El Meson - a Spanish restaurant located in South Minn. This evening a group of 8 of us ordered what should have been a signature dish - Valencia paella. What was served did not come close to what real paella is supposed to be. The food tasted as if the cook had poured the entire liquid from an olive jar into the rice. What was presented was an extremely sour and salty rice - seafood dish. Having come from a Spanish background, I have been served paella dishes many times. This by far was the worst Spanish paella ever.
To be fair our group did order several tapas which were average. Unfortunately the main course was so bad; I can not recommend this restaurant.

Our favorite trip ever was to Barcelona and the trip to this restaurant was a wonderful revival of good memories. The food was wonderful, service was excellent, wine was good, we had a great time - we were there on New Years Eve, but ate early and had reservations - it filled up soon after we arrived so it was a good idea to have reservations. The four of us all tried different entrees and desserts and drinks and it was all well liked!

I have traveled to Spain in the past, but since have become a vegetarian. This said, I arrived expecting to have a limited selection on the menu. It turns out they only offer one substantial vegetarian meal: the arroz con gandules. However, the meal, service, and atmosphere were all so fantastic that I would certainly return, in spite of the fact that 99% of the menu is off limits. Highly recommended.

My boyfriend and I live a mere four blocks from El Meson and have been here four times. Twice, we were turned away and told they were closed, yet it was during their posted hours and patrons were still dining. When we were actually served, we liked the food and ambiance, so we disregarded this experience as atypical. We have also been to Cafe Ena (same owner) and always try to support local neighborhood restaurants. Tonight we tried El Meson again, and I?m afraid that our experience was horrible. There were two other couples waiting and we were told that it would be 35 minutes max and that it would likely be sooner than that. Pretty much entire restaurant turned over and we were still sitting there. I would guess 20-30 people came in after us and were sat before us. After seeing this, we asked the host what was going on. She told us to that everyone else had reservations. It seemed odd that they would be behind on this many reservations, but patiently waited a while longer. After another 15-20 minutes, we asked again and were told that we were next and that they were just cleaning our table. Instead, they sat two other couples that had arrived after us. At no point did anyone approach us to apologize or explain why we were again delayed. We are very patient and understand that sometimes things take longer than expected, but the staff more or less ignored us. We waited for well over and hour and finally left in disgust, not because it took too long but because the customer service was terrible. As we had dinner elsewhere we pondered the fact that the owner had time to chat with us for over ten minutes about his plans to open a new restaurant elsewhere, but didn?t seem at all interested in serving his current customers. Food and wait staff at El Meson and Cafe Ena are very good but the management/customer service leave much to be desired.

I started out with medium hopes, and it was a let down. I was not expecting a fancy night out, just a decent Thursday night dinner. The vegetarian dish I had was the same as my husband - they just tossed some chicken into his. This dish tasted like something I would not have even made in high school - rice with tomato paste mixed in and a few peas thrown on top. The serving was ridiculously large. I wanted to like this place because it seemed like a nice operation and the staff was friendly, but there was just nothing good going on here; the food was unenjoyable, the waitstaff seemed frazzled, and what I thought was a cheap price seemed like a lot for a bowl of rice.

I arrived at El Meson expecting to pay a bit more than my non-profit salary can afford for a quality, unique and flavorful dinner with a good friend. Our server was attentive (the restaurant was almost empty on a Monday evening at 7pm) and pleasant, but the food fell far short of my expectations. I ordered the cochinito - listed in the menu as "grilled pork loin served over grilled pineapple in a orange pineapple sauce, garnished with cucumber relish and served with oven-roasted potatoes." The highlight of the dish was the presentation, which was very artful. Unfortunately, the pork was extremely tough, dry and overcooked, the fruit garnish tasted like it was straight out of a can, and the potatoes had the taste and texture of frozen breakfast potatoes. I spent $26 including tip on a meal I could have prepared much better at home. I ate about 1/3 of the meal before I threw in the towel and had the server take it away. Fortunately, I did order a lovely glass of cabernet that helped ease my disappointment with the meal.

I could have purchased everything I ate this evening pre-made at Rainbow.

The appetizer of calamares was probably frozen; they were bland and mushy. The sauce was yellow and creamy, but Im not sure what it was supposed to taste like.

My bistec encebollado had been seasoned with a package of Pace taco seasoning (you know, the 79cent package of red/brown powder). It was very salty and chemical tasting. After I took the first bite I had this disgusted look on my face, and my companions asked what was wrong. I gave them each a piece, asked them what Rainbow item they thought it tasted like (Taco Seasoning, Adam). Nicely presented though.

Avoid this restaurant unless you love pre-packaged foods.

I could have purchased everything I ate this evening pre-made at Rainbow.

The appetizer of calamares was probably frozen; they were bland and mushy. The sauce was yellow and creamy, but Im not sure what it was supposed to taste like.

It is New Years Eve and stopped in on a whim and was seated immediatley. Our waitress who I kept calling Rita but I think it was actually Dena was awesome. The food was spectacular and I even got the recipe for the lobster bisque. YUMMY!!! It is a must go and we will be back.

Pros: AWESOME, DELICIOUS, FRIENDLY

Excellent restaurant with a nice atmosphere. Good Sangria an a nice pear wrapped in proscuito appetizer. The prok with risotto and blackberry glaze was excellent and so was the Puerto Rican rice with seafood. They have Tapas on the menu as well. A must try Latin bistro.

This is the first time we visit El Meson and it was a great evening. Mi wife and I ordered the Paella Valenciana and it was great! Also make sure you order a Sangria, it is delicious. Remember to make a reservation before you go and if you are planning on eating the Paella make sure you tell them when you make your reservation because it takes 45 min to cook. The live music was very romantic and our waitress was very helpful.
I will definitely comeback to EL Meson, however, next time I will make a reservation.

I have eaten at El Meson quite often and it has become my favorite restaurant. The food and service are always top notch. The newly redecorated interior adds a warm and romantic atmosphere and the expanded patio area is great on a nice summer evening. If you haven't been here in the past year, please return. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Very good food, and an excellent lunch buffet. Their dishes are exotic and creative, with rich sauces and unique combinations of ingredients. I have seen the paella and it looks wonderful-- I plan on trying it soon. They have recently updated the interior and have live music on the weekends. Definitely a nice change from chain restaurants.

I went to El Meson because I was looking for Cuban food, and CitySearch listed it as such. I came away pleased with the restaurant, but Cuban it ain't, nor does it even attempt to be or claim to be. Whoever reviewed it for CitySearch and listed it as Cuban probably thinks Castro is Puerto Rican.

A co-worker and I found this place by accident. We were very plesantly surprised! The lunch buffet was fantastic, both in flavor and variety. This is certainly more of a pan-latin joint than Cuban. Smoky pork ribs, black bean soup, rice-n-beans, and an absolutely smashing curry chiken dish! Their salsa was very good, too. You could easily make this a regular lunch destination.
