This place is amazing! They should call it chateua de marble! double french doors open and a grand master ballroom straight out of elegance. Beus and Belles unite!

I found the staff to be very helpful in our wedding planning. The chicken was prepared just the way it was planned, the band rocked, the comedian was a nice twist and the newly wedded bride was in utter bliss. I cant wait until the pictures develop!!

The University Club is very elegant, with marble columns and floors and a huge two-story ballroom. They host wedding receptions in both the lobby and the ballroom, and the food is top-notch. We attended a friend's wedding reception in the Grand Ballroom and it was gorgeous.

My sister got married here in August 2008. The following were the issues:

The food was TERRIBLE. The lettuce was so wilty it looked/tasted like it had been sitting in the sun for hours. Additionally they DRENCHED the soggy lettuce in the dressing. It was so bad most guests opted not to eat their salad at all. The night of the wedding they changed the kind of chicken that was prepared. The punch they said was enough for our 184 guests ran out after the first half hour. We were told that punch could be served in cups my mom had specially ordered for the couple; she put them on the punch table the morning of the wedding. To this day we have no clue what happened to them...they certainly did not get used! They ran out of liquor and the bartender said it was b/c no one ordered more after the club's previous event.

The University Club just contacted my sister and her husband about two weeks ago to say they owe almost $1,300 more, even though they have records stating the entire bill is paid (without any money taken off for all the screw ups). Infact, their statement shows that the Club was supposed to charge the final amount to be $800 and they charged $1,400 ($600 more than they were given permission for) and when it was addressed after my sister looked at her bank statement, they said that they found extra fees after they spoke with my sister on the phone for that final payment.

Please do NOT let anyone you know use this venue!

First, the positives: the University Club is a lovely building in a great location. And the food they served at our wedding was perfectly fine. But how does the place function with a broken chain of command and inadequate staff? In the 8 month period between choosing the place and the wedding day, the Club went through three event coordinators. Every time one disappeared, we had to start the planning all over again with her replacement. Each promised to be there to take charge on our Big Day, but come wedding day, no one showed up! That left us with 2 unsupervised wait staff to serve meals and drinks to some 120 people. Now, the ceremony was outside, and we were promised that the grounds would be ready. However, when we arrived that day, the lawn was not mowed and it was strewn with detritus. We managed to get the grounds crew going on doing the necessary work, but then a bizarre phone call came from someone who claimed to be the Club's owner: he said that a wedding cannot be held on the property, due to zoning! Really?!? Did it escape you that a succession of Club employees planned the event with us AND that you gladly took many thousands of our dollars in the months before the event? Happily, your sad little stunt failed, and the wedding went on without further incident. Come on, Club Owner(s): PLEASE learn how to run a business, and how to do right by your customers.

Pros: Beautiful Archatecter

This place had an absolutely fabulous view of downtown St. Paul. My family has been a part of this club for a few years and we have had nothing but great service. My sister had her wedding there a couple of years ago and it was fabulous! The club has much to offer from a great gym to a pool to a great dining room. It is really a nice setting to have dinner with family or friends.

We had our wedding there and it seemed like we were jsut a number. Our 'sales rep' was rude, uncaring, not willing to do any tiny thing outside the norm.

Like so many old places do, this one thrived for many years, then died for many more. Then it was fully restored and superbly staffed to become a great gathering place. The Downtown Clubhouse, with its Italian marble…
