They were great! They got me in on the same day and fixed the problem quickly. No one like a car repair or wants to spend the money. I was hoping to find somewhere cheaper than the usual Volvo dealership I go to, and this is it! They didn't try to push more work/repairs onto me. They simply fixed the noise I brought it in for.

I brought my car to Autopia for the first time to get a second opinion on another garage's prognosis and cost. While Autopia agreed that, yes, my '97 Camry w/ 240 thousand miles needed a new engine, it wasn't ready to give in yet and technically nothing was broken. Instead of the $6,000 for a new engine quoted by the last garage, Autopia suggested I get a used engine installed for half the price - but not until this one gives out. As I can't afford a new or used engine, this advice has been the difference between me having a car to drive and not having one. The first garage had told me it wasn't safe to even drive my car the five blocks home.

I've had a bit of work done on my Camry at Autopia since then - major and minor. Some of the things I like about them are just personal taste, but sometimes the little things can say something big about the kind of business being run.
-Prices are competitive. Cars cost a lot of money to purchase and a lot to fix. Mechanics see everything that is wrong or needs fixing and that's what they'll recommend - all of it. Depends on whether you're a "wait 'til it's broken to fix it" person or a "it's going bad/leaking, replace it" person. Autopia has worked well with me in both states of mind so I give them a thumbs up on price because they haven't pressured me to fix it all unless it's ready to blow.
-The office is clean.
-They have given me rides back and forth to my home and once, work.
-Whoever calls with my estimate takes time to talk be through each problem and how severe (or not) each is. They will also show you what they're talking about and have explained to me how certain parts function so I understand what was going wrong.
-I always get a call back afterward - the next week or few days - to make sure everything is working properly and whether I have questions.
-My car's been washed and cleaned when I come to pick it up.
-Everyone's nice and interested in why I'm there.

I'm curious about the comments about up-selling - I've not experienced that yet with Autopia, but it seems normal to me that a for profit business would be working to make some profit.

Also, it shouldn't matter, as I think that everyone is equally responsible for protecting themselves, knowing their car and that men can be sheisted just as easily, but I am a single woman who doesn't know a lot about her car and I feel confident giving my business to Autopia. When I'm unsure I ask, if that doesn't do it, I get online and do some of my own research - and ask again.

I just have to tell you that this is where you want to go for just a check up or major work on your vehicle. These guys saved my life because I was going on vacation and didn't have the money to make all the repairs that were need to go on this trip. The allowed me to get the repairs done and do a two payments over a two week period. Where else would I have been able to do that? No where. These guys are the ONLY place I will ever take my to car again.

These guys are terrible first off. I bought my car from the owner, less than 2000 miles after buying it, the clutch starts slipping and only had 22,000 miles on it. They were nice enough to give me 50% off labor to have them repair it but that was still $600 just for labor. After getting the car back I start driving it home and my car starts to overheat and was making a grinding noise coming from the front end and I call the owner wondering what they did to my car. Turns out they didn't bleed the coolent after they were done which is routine and should've been taken care of. So I ended up fixing that myself.

Next trip there after dreading going back, some issues with my clutch pedal which they say wasn't related to their installation of course. I dropped my car off at 9am, didn't hear from them so I called at about 3pm since I was getting done with work and they still didn't know what was going on and said they would call me back. I decided to go there since I still didn't hear from them at 4:30. They leave me waiting in their waiting room until 5:30 before I heard anything from them. Which on their wall it says that they keep you informed as their 10 commandments or whatever, total BS.

I wouldn't wish their service apon my worst enemy, save yourself a headache and time and go somewhere else.

I have been an Autopia customer for over 15 years. Own three automobiles with two being British so I am in the shop a lot. Autopia is an excellent place to have your auto serviced with a knowledgeable and courteous staff. Autopia has always been able to find parts for my automobiles and completes required services quickly. I would recommend Autopia to anyone in need of auto service or repairs.

Honest! I just needed someone to help me remove my retired license plates on my 1998 Nissan and install the new plates. My regular repair shop, of 16 years, knowing I was out of work still wanted to charge me so much money for such a little job. The Autopia emblem was on the old plate so I thought I ask them. Kind, understanding, completely honest, they charged me a price I could afford and I promised to use them again for something that really did cost real money. I will. They were so professional. Honest!

I bought my Saturn SL-2 from the fellas at Autopia 6 years ago and it's been one of the best cars I've ever owned! I stay on top of the maintenance [bringing it to them of course] and consider myself [and my car] fortunate to be in such good care. Dave has always made himself available to answer questions for me if I call re: any problem, and his sense of humor is also [very much] appreciated! Autopia is definitely my kind of "car shop."

To Peter S who wrote the previous review -
They're mechanics not psychics... if your car was not diagnosed the first time around,
more than likely it wasn't an apparent issue.
I'm all about reading reviews before trying anything out but if it's
something where it wasn't seen before and now it's rearing it's ugly head -
you have to think "how much effort have you put into the maintenance of your car?"
You basically just scrutinized yourself by saying that they told you it's
impossible to predict when a component will fail...
Just cannot understand people sometimes.
Maybe you should take some time and learn the mechanical aspect of your car
to know how it works.. and then you have a fair stance...
There are still good people out there and before you run to tell all the bad,
maybe you should get all your facts.. Noone likes to be taken advantage of, but
reading your story, it doesn't seem like that at all...just sayin.

I know the difference between having experienced and unexperienced techs work on things and believe me,you pay a lot more when they dont know what they're doing. Autopia has two mechanics with more than twenty-five years of documented proffessional experience each, ask them and they,ll prove it. I know because I've been going there for over ten years,I know them personally and I have been very pleased with them. Good mechanics are far and few between so dont be so hard on them if they sometimes show their human side and make an occasional mistake. Doctors who make mistakes that cost lives get less flack.

I have been a autopia customer for last 12 years. I have purchase 4 cars from them over the 12 years. I still own all 4 cars and they are in great shape. Autopia is the only repair shop that has worked on my cars and they are in excellent shape. Out of all the cars, 1998 Toyota Camrey is my favorite. It just turn over 320K. I am very satisfied with the service work I have received from Autopia. These guys try very hard to keep a customer happy. whenever I bring my car for repairs, I always got a ride at times, I was offered loaner cars.I would recomend anyone to use these guys for repair work. Excellent customer care worth lot to me.

Was hoping to have brake work done. Paid about $50 to get an official estimate that was higher than what was discussed over the phone. Being irritated by this, I told them not to touch the car and got a free estimate and much lower price down the street. Lesson learned. I imagine they get a lot of business based on location alone.

I own a 2001 Audi A4. I have had many problems with it, and Audi parts are expensive. I recently purchased an extended warranty. It was a fortunate purchase because I was suddenly faced with almost $2000 of necessary repairs. David Singh, the Autopia manager diagnosed the problems and contacted the warranty administrator. The administrator's adjustor agreed that all of the repairs prescribed by David were necessary, but the administrator was unwilling to pay Autopia's hourly rate. In short, all of the necessary work was completed, and I was out of pocket only $45.00. Over the last three years that I have patronized Autopia, its staff have been competent, professional and courteous. In that time, it has saved me a lot of money as compared to other shops. As far as I am concerned, Autopia and its staff can't be beat. I will be a lifetime customer.

For the past three years, I have brought my 2002 Honda Civic Si to Autopia for repairs. I have dealt with David. I am a woman and know little about automotive matters. David has always taken the time to explain problems to me in language that I can understand. The hourly rate charged by Autopia is competitive with other quality shops. When diagnosis has been difficult and time consuming, I have not been charged for the time. I feel very comfortable with Autopia and will continue to bring my care there for service.

I initally went to Autopia for automotive service because I had moved in just a few blocks away from them. That was almost four years ago and I continue to go back.

As somebody who has spent the majority of my career working with mechanics and auto body professionals as my customer's I feel confident in saying I know how to identify whether or not a shop is ethical and truly professional. Autopia is both of these.

It is true that they may be a little bit more expensive, but this is almost entirely contained to their labor. I know what parts should cost VERY well and their mark-up on parts is almost nonexistent. Autopia regularly offers coupons for a labor discount through local publications and printed on grocery store receipts of local businesses, which nullifies a good deal of the higher labor cost one might experience at Autopia over another shop.

When it comes to service Autopia has proven themselves unparalleled. Their service managers have been ready and willing to work with me in the past to seek the most economical solution for repairs, saving me over $1,000.00 on a recent job where my choices were limited to a transmission replacement on my present, relatively young, vehicle and buying a new car. They have never been pushy about recommended repairs when I felt I couldn't afford them when identified, and the one occasion on which I have needed service under warranty for work performed by them the job was completed quickly and with no resistance to performing the job under warranty. On those occasions where they have been unable to complete work for me in the expected time frame they have readily offered me a loaner vehicle, free of charge, and on one occasion where a very complicated repair took much longer than anticipated they gave me a significant additional labor discount. They have been quick to respond to me and keep me up to date as diagnoses are made and repairs are completed as well. If you are seeking a new mechanic, find yourself a labor coupon and check out Autopia at 2311 Hennepin.

Pros: Quality of service and work. Great support of warranty.

Cons: Cost (though still a good value given the quality)

.

We always new Autopoia was overpriced, we chose never use them even though they are a few blocks away.
This last Friday the car needed one of head lights fixed and, because Autopia is so conveniently located (for such a small job), we chose to take it there. Friday morning the car goes in - Friday afternoon Autopia calls to let us know that the car needs more work and that our total was $300. Friday late afternoon the car gets "fixed" - Autopia calls us to pick it up - We show up and the car stalls as their pulling it out of the garage. Some how we know that, even though the car was working when we brought it to Autopia, we were going to have to pay more for them to fix it. So now we have to leave the car over the weekend and we get a lame explanation. We pick it up Monday morning - it runs fine, but this (Wednesday) morning the service engine light BLINKS! We take the car back to Autopia so they can fix our car that they broke. Know Autopia wants $500 more to "fix" it. They still have the car, we are picking it up tomorrow morning and taking it to our regular mechanic.
We will be writing a letter to the Better Business Bureau and telling as many people as we can about this.
We are not the first and I'm sure we will not be the last people cheated by Autopia.

My wife and I recently bought a used car from Autopia. Our experience was wonderful. We didn't want to take out a big loan on a car, however, the car we really wanted was at Autopia. So Dave and Tim worked with us to hold the car for several months while we paid them installments, until meeting their asking price. It was the most hassle free car buying experience we could have asked for. After buying the car Tim personally came to my office to put the plates on, and completed all the paper work at my convenience. Tim was very easy to trust and always available to work with us, even on Sunday evenings while watching Football. We will definitely consider Autopia again, and recommend their business when buying a used car. Thanks for everything guys.

I brought my 12 yr old Subaru into Autopia last month after neglecting it's upkeep for the last 4 yrs. It had been a heavily used work car for about 8 yrs prior to that.

I'd had some trouble with my latest clutch that Autopia had put in for me in '08, but I put it down to my hardly driving any more.

So I called Dave S and made an appointment for a tune-up.

Once they got my car in they found out the clutch really did have a problem and they replaced it at no charge. They also had the foresight to send my flywheel in to a machine shop to fix some damage the bad clutch had done.

When I got my car back, I couldn't believe it. The WHOLE car is like new again! I really thought my little GT might be on it's last legs. But they managed to turn my poor old dog back into a pup again!

Now I really enjoy driving my car again. And they did it all for a song! For the money I paid, I never expected to get a completely rejuvenated car back. I couldn't be happier.

My 19 year old daughter has brought her car to Autopia twice. I was relieved because they took the time to explain everything to her AND they called me before they did anything because they knew Mom was paying for the repairs! They did a great job and I appreciate their respect.

I brought my car in for a oil change for the 21.95 special. They told me that my water pump was leaking onto my timing belt, among many more things with a estimate of almost $2000. They told me that it was so severe that I shouldn't even drive it to work (5 miles away), and that I needed to fix it immediately. My car is under warranty at VW, so I brought it there. They told me nothing was wrong with it.
So, I got paranoid that either a: autopia was trying to rip me off or b: vw didn't want to cover any damage cause my car was under warranty.
So, I brought it to a mechanic with a good reputation and he told me nothing was wrong with it! That 21. 95 oil change cost me $200 because I had to bring it into two other places to have them look at my 'severe car problems'.

The thing is, they talked to me very nicely, and explained 'what was wrong with my car' to me. They got voted #1 by Women's Press which makes me sad. Yes, they talk to women nicely, but they LIE!

I would never take my car back here. Took it in for a couple simple issues...took multiple days and still wasn't fixed after a large bill! Also told me I had more items that needed fixing so they could get more mone out of me. I do not recommend this place to anyone!

I dropped my car off for a problem with the battery connection, and I picked it up with many other problems fixed too! Of course they called and verified with me first before making any repairs.
They dealt with my warranty company so that I didn't have to, and they got almost all of the repairs covered. For one particular repair that I really needed, but didn't think I could afford, they came up with a generous solution: giving me a discount according to an old coupon for that repair.
Then when I picked up my car, they had cleaned it inside and out! I will definitely go back there and recommend them to everyone I know.

We had a fuel pressure regulator replaced.

The customer service was great, but they charged us 350 dollars.
We called around and all other shops were charging max of 250.

We felt really ripped off, and called to complain. Surprisingly, they were extremely helpful and immediately offered to cover the difference. They were very eager to help. While the prices may be a bit higher than other shops, you know you have qualified and skilled mechanics working on your vehicle. In addition you recieve quality parts with warranty.

I had to look up autopias phone number again, as lost it, and don't understand how they could have negative reviews. I have been a loyal customer of autopia in uptown for a couple of years now. I initially came in with one of their 21.95 oil change coupons, and had such a good experience that i have kept coming back. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable, my car always comes back fixed right and washed. I would definitely recommend this shop, especially to someone who like me doesn't know a lot about cars, they always take the time to explain what needs to be done in a way I can understand instead of telling me a lot of technical jargon that goes right over my head. i had used a couple of other shops in the area in the past, and either got a surprise bill when I came to pick up my car, or left without an understanding of what was done to my vehicle.this has never happened to me at autopia. Of all my car repair experiances, autopia has been the best!

Talk about persistence, these guys make it an art to up-sell. Most of their business must be from the additional sales they get. Nice showroom. The guys are very polite and understanding, but OMG!,do they hit you up for additional sales. I spoke with one of the people that work there and was told that even though they advertise certified technicians, none of them have a current certificate. Good work done there, but just be prepared to have a second line of credit to pay for the additional sales.

I found this comapny in the Better Business Bearu On-line site. I like to have a recouse if the business does not meet my expectations. I have a 2000 Ford Explorer. Now I am somewhat versed in engines, but i wasn't going to let them know that.

I called them and spoke with Mike. He told me they could tow it in, and get it look at as early as the next morning (understand this was 3 PM when i called). They picked it up that night. I got a call from Mike the next morning. He descibed the issue, and I played dumb. He actually took the time to describe it. Not to mention he offered to show me the problem! I authorized the repairs (yes a little spendy at $955.00 but not much more than other shops) and they got underway.

They got my car done by the next mid-day. Mike was great with follow-up and communcation. I was able to pay over the phone via credit card, and picked it up later in the evening. It ran great, the car was clean, and a detailed invoice was on my seat.

SUMMARY: You might pay a little more to have Autopia fix your car. However, if you have ever had auto repairs before you know you get what you pay for. Mike and his team really did well on my SUV.

I took my car (in fine working order) in for an oil change here, and lo and behold, they called me later that day to say they'd "found a few issues that should be attended to," including my brake pads, rotors, and CV boots. The total estimate for the work they advised was $1700 (that was WITH a 20% labor discount). I took the car to a different shop a few days later for a second opinion. The second shop told me I'd been given the "single woman estimate." My brake pads, rotors, and CV boots were all in fine condition. The second shop tweaked a few things for a total of $150. I'll take that over $1700 any day- and I'll never go back to Autopia.

I've taken my car to autopia a few times and each time I feel that it has been overpriced (labor esp.) and have heard the same from others (ex. almost $600 to replace alternator). Other than that though I've had quick service with good communication, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Let me start off by saying that I received good service on my car ( I got a new fuel filter, transmission flush, tires rotated, and my alignment fixed). Your car will most likely be in good shape after taking it to these guys, but you'll be much poorer for it.

I was shocked to see that they charged me $42 for transmission fluid, $52 for the transmission filter kit, and $35.32 for the new fuel filter. The service prices were also somewhat high, but I accept that they provide quality service, so I'll pay a little more. But overcharging on parts is completely inexcusable. After a little online research looking at what edmunds.com says a mechanic should charge for these parts I found out that a fuel filter should cost around $20 at most, a transmission filter kit between $35 and $40 and the transmission fluid about $10. Overall, I was overcharged by more than $60 on a $132 parts bill.

What really irks me though is that the 20% off labor coupon I used didn't apply to the alignment repair. Their reasoning was that it was a special package that was already discounted. The realignment was no special offer to begin with. Other places offer the same service for a fee not related to labor-hours. It's an industry standard. And when i disputed this, the person I spoke to use the tactic of suggesting that he could use a labor-hour system of pricing to charge me for the alignment which cost nearly $200. Only then could he give me the discount. Of course he expected me to accept their charges without a discount, and unfortunately that's what I did.

PROS: Perks like the complimentary carwash and vacuuming
CONS: They use this and other things to justify their absurdly high prices

Autopia upsells with such percistance and annoyance that I avoid that place ever since going there for the first time, though they may advertise good prices and mail out coupons. If you are salesperson resistant, know exactly what you need and are not easily annoyed, you might actually like that place location is very convenient, and so are service hours. Otherwise, just go elsewhere.

PROS: location
CONS: upselling goes overboard

When we needed the hydrolics on our shifter tightened, we called around a ton of places. Autopia in Uptown was very reasonably priced and could get the job done fast. They were very nice and helped us with our requests. I also see coupons for them sometimes in the mail. They even parked our car outside for us so we could pick it up after hours. Really great to work with.
