While visiting from Iowa, we found this great breakfast place, THE NEIGHBORHOOD CAFE in St Paul. Food was great. Service was good from a very diverse wait staff. The owner, Krissy, seems to be everywhere greeting customers as well as working the kitchen and overseeing that everything is done to make eating there a pleasure.Next time there, we will try the lunch or dinner. Fun place with good food.

One day I went into the cafe with some friends, we sat there for 20 min untill we were approched with the rude waitress. The next thing my order was not correct, so I politely asked that it be changed, this action made the young woman seemed aggitated and she gave me the food that was requested. I went back another day and placed an order to go, when I the oder my fish tasted like it had some kind of dirt on it( maybe it was dropped) I tossed it into the garbage and vowed never to eat there again.

Our hopes for a nice Sunday breakfast turned into a nightmare, one which we plan to never experience again! First of all, the waitress stood around chatting to a neighboring table, ignoring our arrival for quite some time. When she finally came our way, we told her that we wanted the Cajun breakfast, made with scrambled eggs, and a side of bacon. My daughter told her to have the bacon and hashbrowns made well-done or crispy. When it arrived, the bacon and hashbrowns were undercooked, and the hashbrowns were drowning in cheese sauce making them extra soggy. I ran to flag her down and have the bacon and hashbrowns cooked longer. She returned the bacon cooked correctly, but the eggs were now "overeasy" instead of scrambled! I had to get up and run back to the kitchen staff and ask them to fix the problem. Finally a waiter brought our order to me and stated, "Here's round three!" How rude and improper, especially since it was our waitress who failed to listen to us! If I owned this restaurant, they would be looking for new jobs!

You take the good you take the bad you take them both and then you have the neighborhood cafe. Nothing fancy Just some no nonsence eatery-ing.
The biscuits n gravy are pleasing if the biscuits aren't too soft. The Cajun is great and is the same recipe from the Dinkytowner when that place was cool. Everything is strait forward with little variation but thats why we go there. It's still way better than the Louisiana Cafe ( that place sucked). And you can bring your mom there.
Like hot sauce? Well they have a 4' X 2' cupbord of all sorts of thangs to pep up those eggs and hashbrowns.
I will continue to eat at this fine restaraunt until I am no longer in the neigborhood.

I have been to this local grill many times. Never had cold food.
Thursdays they have a great Turkey lunch special. Old fashioned kind, stick to your ribs. Great Tuna Melt, yummy.
The potatoes at this place are prepared from scratch ie hash browns and they are good. Have not been disappointed in 2 years.
Prehaps if you have a large party that is acting pretty much like a bunch of jerks, you might have problems
Other wise I give this local place a thumbs up.
Keep up the good work. PS they have a multicultural staff that certainly keeps things interesting.

Whatever's on the menu is served with cheerful friendly service - not professional servers. I expected to find great homemade desserts like Keys or Highland Cafe - but what they had at 2 in the afternoon was a choice of dreary muffins or Rice Krispie Bars!!!

This is a good location, and should be a great cafe - their breakfast items are good value, but they need to go beyond friendliness.

Before going into this local joint, I was expecting good food and even better service. What Minnesotan who loves local joints think otherwise? But, when I finally got my corned beef hash, after downing three cups of sketchy-looking coffee, I figured out what this place was all about. The potatoes were starchy and bland, the corned beef slices were big enough to make a sandwich with, and the eggs were hard and somewhat cold. Do not go here if you like good breakfast food. It was a waste of my 12 bucks.

It took about an hour and a half for us to get our food! Not only that, but nearly all of the food was cold (it tasted like it was sitting out the entire time) and one of the orders was completely forgotten. The waiter/waitress on staff were extremely disconnected and never asked if we needed refills on drinks the entire time. Everyone in the group was upset that there wasn't any mention made during the wait as to when the food would be ready (I would think that you should at least tell the paying customer 45 minutes in that the food is on its way). We were all pretty steamed at this point, but when the order was completely forgotten someone asked if they would have to pay for it and the waitress got extremely upset and started arguing profusely. Now I'm a pretty humble and very understanding type of guy (my wife would argue, too understanding) but even I got flustered by this. I strongly believe in supporting local businesses but when you feel like you're an inconvenience just by being there, well that does it for me. The staff was terrible and downright rude and I have no plans on returning. Sorry to rant but I just wanted some people to know of my experience.

Wife and I love to find nice breakfast spots and we always enjoy visiting here. Interesting selections for breakfast with varied sizes of entrees for all appetites. Service has always been prompt and cheerful. Nice seats by the windows are great for people watching and they can accomodate larger groups of about up to 10 or so. During the warmer months they do have a small patio which is a nice relaxing place too.

The traditional breakfast/lunch fare at great prices. The neat thing about this place is that it is open late - after bar close it can get busy b/c O'Gara's is next door. The club sandwich is my fave. With any of the sandwiches you get your choice of soup or a salad, for less than $9.

Cute patio, too.

PROS: low prices, great food, open late!
