NEVER GO HERE! I normally do not post reviews of places I have gone, but I felt it is needed in this case. To preface, I have been to the Wild Onion once before for drinks/appetizers and the food was ok and the drinks were overpriced.

The Wild Onion is the worst example of a "Birthday House" that I have ever seen.
They are clearly a racist business, and I never play the race card. EVERY SINGLE TIME I go there,
there is some kind of issue. It can range a "dress code" violation, to someone drinking their Birthday
drink too fast. They ALWAYS find a reason to create a problem with people of color.
I advise anyone with any kind of tint in their skin or slanted eyes to stay clear away from this place.
I have been going there for years, for the Birthday special and EVERY single time there has been racism displayed.
I've never had this issue at any other restaurant in Minnesota. This time our party of 7 got kicked out because
the Birthday boy drank his 2nd beer too fast. The manager stood and watched our table like we were going to steal
the place. He actually checked his watch when the Birthday boy finished his Beer. I was absolutely disgusted.
So Im spreading the word BAN THE WILD ONION FOR BLATANT RACISM!

I've never been to the Wild Onion before tonight. I went there right after my Tai Chi class (which ends at 9pm) tonight to join some friend to toast someone who passed away 4 years ago in a tragic plane accident. I get to the door and the door guy says there is a dress code and my dark gray sweats (dark) were not code. I explain why I am there and he asks me where I live and if I could go change. I said west of Minneapolis so no. He asks the manager (it's 9:20pm now) and the manager says no, don't let me in. So if I had been there at 8:50pm I could have gotten in but now that it's past 9 I can't join my friends to remember someone who has passed on? Wow. Never been there, never will go back. Great way to treat your customers.

I have been to the Wild Onion in the past for birthday??s celebrations that I have gone to. My Boyfriend and I where late to the birthday celebration last night and when we arrived we where advised that he could not enter because his shorts that where very form fitting where to baggy. I spoke with the female manager who stated that that is there policy. I asked where is it posted and I was directed to there 8 1/2 X 11 sign saying "dress code enforced" and nothing else. I asked what there entire list of requirements and they could not provider it. We waited across the street waiting for our group to finish eating and while waiting viewed white females and males entering with shorts/skorts longer that allowed and also viewed black couples where the males had the same citation and they where turned away in a 30 minute time period. In conclusion if you want a nice WHITE Dinner go there!

The Wild Onion is average, a little too average for its ideal location on Grand Avenue. While the happy hour is decent and the food is well priced, it seems more Applebee-esque than "Chicago neighborhood style." And while I've never experienced any major problems with the service, it's been lackluster at best.

In the future, I think my money's better spent up Dale at Sweeny's or, if I want a big step up, at the Muddy Pig. While some people may like the environment, it's definitely not for me.

I have been to the Onion many times and always had a good time. I thought it would be a nice place to celebrate my daughter's 21st birthday. I made a reservation, I called a head to make sure we could bring a cake and balloons, no problem. Let them know we would be a group of about 30 people. They asked if everyone was over 21, yes they would all be over 21. They should have asked if they were all 'white' because that seemed to be the real requirement. Of the 25 people that showed up there were 6 blacks in the group, those 6 were not allowed in. They were told the 'dress code' didn't allow - they were in jeans, tshirts and button downs, just like everyone else.

I will never go there again

The Wild Onion is a fun place to grab some food and beer. They usually have some type of entertainment on the weekends. The atmosphere is pretty nice and they are usually pretty fast to serve.

Went here for their birthday tuesday promotion they offer to have dinner and some drinks, the waitress was great really friendly and the food was very good. They had a live band playing during there extended happy hour which was fun and gave the place a energetic vibe. After our dinner we finshed up our drinks and as we headed out the door noticed quite a few 21-25 yr olds filtering in, luckily for us we were just leaving as it seemed to be getting quite lively as it gets later in the night. Overall it was a great experience and having never been to Chicago personally I think the Wild Onion captures what I would imagine as a bustling neighborhood bar and restaurant.

I went to the wild onion with a group of friends for my birthday. Not only was the waitress extremely rude, she charged us incorrectly and refused to fix our bill. The Wild Onion management also has a rediculous rule that they will not split checks. At the end of the night our waitress dropped off our bill, which was wrong and torn into two peices, and told us we needed to figure out who owed what because she couldn't remember what each of us ordered. I'm a waitress and was infuriated by her poor service and unwillingness to help. You should feel like a guest when you enter a restaurant, not like a burdon.

I was very disappointed wasting my money on such poor service and food. My friend and I went to the Wild Onion to grab a bite to eat one evening and had a horrible experience! The hostess was very accomodating from the moment we walked in the door, actually better than the waitress! We had three different waitresses trying to wait on us but all who fell through. Our waitress got our drinks, put our order in and then disappeared! Even before our food came out, we saw her walk out the front door and never come back! Then this other girl by the name KATIE F. served us but came back to our table only once to give more water but the water was warm because it had no ice! We had to ask for ice. We only had one set of silverware so we had to go the wait station to get our own. Our bad experience did not stop there but you get the gist of it. Bottom line....don't waste your money on this place for anything.

The waitresses were very pushy and weren't friendly AT ALL. We were celebrating a birthday and whenever we would make a request, the waitress would do the exact opposite. I felt very embarrassed actually. The servers were not very accommodating. For being a "Birthday House" it wasn't very happy.

Please do not throw your hard-earned beer money down the drain at this St. Paul restaurant/nightspot. Its a place I have given MANY chances because of the convenient location. However, each time I have been sorely disappointed. The food is nothing special and the staff is dim. The men are often approaching creepy status and the music is taken directly from your wedding dj's playlist. With so many possibilities in the Twin Cities it would be in your best interest to go somewhere else.

me and all my friends have seen every thing, so we go out of the bar and we tried to talk with them and explain what happened but nobody wanna listen instead they closed the door! and they behave with us like creminals!
That was my favorite place to eat drink and have fun, and i live next door to it, but is that a good way to treat people? espicially when they are regular custemer's?

don't go here. the dj is an always will be a piece with his head stuck up his but. maybe that's why he can't hear the terrible music that's he's playing. embarrassing.

we went to this spot a couple of times and had a good time when the dj was decent. however, more often then not, the dj has been terrible. the place is great when the dj sticks to the tops songs, but too many times the dj has just ruined the night by playing irrelevant garbage. i have never seen a dj clear the dance floor so quickly or leave so many people confused by the garbage he plays. the worst part is that it is the same tool every night leaving everyone disappointed. i have seen more people put together better playlists on their ipod than the onion dj ever does. it is sad to say but his choice in music is embarrassing for the number of people that show up there on the weekends. it is sad to see so many people out on the dance floor look at each other and ask "what is the dj thinking?" if i want to hear "cotton eyed joe" then i will just hang out at my grandma's farm and wait for rooster to crow. what a worthless night. the dj could s my d and i still wouldn't be happy that's how bad he was. not only is he that bad but it these times of economic trouble you can't afford to play that worthless of music. they will lose money. i didn't think that a dj could ever drive a place broke, but the dj at the wild onion was broke. by far the worst music selection that you could think of and the worst part might be that he doesn't even know it. i hope he reads this so he can figure out how to quit being such a worthless tool.

Wild Onion located on Grand is a Chicago style neighborhood bar and grill. The pub fare is numerous on the menu but we settled on the walleye sliders. Tiny battered morsels of walleye on dinner rolls served with horseradish laced tarter sauce. Tasty, moderately priced, local bar crowd, slow but dependable servers.

We went to the Wild Onion on Saturday Night (09/20/08) and I am so curious how a somewhat of an upper scale bar/restaurant would have smelled so strongly of Sickness! The smell started right after walking past the person that took our cover and continued around the ENTIRE main bar and all the way back to the ATM machine. I gasped at the thought that there was actually an entire dining room full of people eating. I don't understand how any restaurant management would think this is acceptable. I think the only reason the place was as busy as it was is because they were running some kind of event night, the place was filled with deaf patrons. Nothing at all against the event, just the horrendous smell! Makes me wonder how often they clean as they should, with the strong smell throughout, that was NOT the effects of one person getting sick, but several without sanitizing. VERY DISGUSTING, very bad experience!

While everyone in the restaurant was staring at the television.... I got the fish sandwich and it tasted like they just put a dead with with some lettuce on a bun. Then my friend gave me some of her pasta and it was so sweet I could not swallow it.

I usually never write anything but today i need to do this. Me and my friends go to the wild onion all the time and my favorite server is Elise. She has never been rude to anyone and is always willing to help you even if your not her table. She always has a smile on her face and i see many of customers stop her just to say Hi. I was actually there also just a couple of weeks ago when i saw her start to run out of the restraunt and when she came back i asked if everything was ok. She was out of breath and said yes i just ran after that couple because the wife left her purse and they were leaving on vacation in the morning. wow now thats great service. I just want to say thank you Elise for being who you are!

not to be on the rude side but when you run up a huge tab in comparisson to the other patrons of this place and you tip big. you dont even get a thank you. the wait staff even tries to defend the other staff by saying you are wrong. they must have done it. I was there with several friends and they all agreed that it was quite rude. The wild onion had staff that accuses people of being something they are not. The barttenders before the night crew were much more courteous and friendly. Mr. Mike on a power trip needs to get schooled on how to be a manager.
basic google search came up with,
tcrestaurantguide and stpaulhappyhour both agreed with me.
Also check out the thrifty hipster for more info.
Summary....The wild onion needs help. and there staff is so arrogant that they cant see past themselves and what they are doing to the regular businees that they had. yeah...HAD!!!
Itheone no longer regular. I WAS TREATED badly!!!!!!!!

This place used to be more of a family restaurant, now it has turned into a so-so night club. The food wasn't and isn't great and the service has gone down hill.

This is a long review but please read so the same thing doesn't happen to you.
Unfortunately I am changing my review. This used to be my favorite place in St. Paul until a couple nights ago. To start off, March 6th is my birthday; we went to the wild onion on March 5th. I will link to there birthday specials page: wild-onion(dot)net/birthdays
On the Wednesday specials it says buy an entree get another free when you come in on the week of your birthday. When we asked our waitress, elise, I won't forget that name, she said that we were just confused and many other people think the same thing. So, we read over the birthday flyer meticulously to make sure but it was clear she was trying to commit fraud. We asked her again and she said "we're printing of new flyers" and that her manager already knew about it. After insisting multiple times to talk to a manager she tried to take our cash off of the table and said she'd get the manager. We quickly covered our cash (change) and waited for the manager. The manger came out and assured us that the waitress was just confused and that she though my birthday was next week, (I clearly stated it was TOMORROW) and gave us what they had advertised all a long as well as taking another $9 off our bill. Now, I must say the food was great as always but this will take a while for me to get over. If The Wild Onion, St. Paul, continues to employ a fraudulent wait staff I will be one extremely disappointed customer, as this was my favorite restaurant in the Twin Cities. Enter at your own risk and be sure the wait staff does not try and take advantage of you.

So my girlfriends and I used to always frequent the Wiid Onion in college- (2003-2005) but haven't been back until last night (Friday, March 3). We came in around ten pm, and the atmosphere already seemed fun. We sat at a table by the bar and had appetizers and drinks. The food, as I remembered, was great. And I don't just mean for bar food. I was also impressed by the service. All the waitresses and bartenders seemed to be in a good mood, even when it got pretty busy after midnight. I was also glad to see that none of them were dressed nearly as trashy as they used to, none of that mini skirt/high boot combo that we all used to make fun of. The DJ was also great and the dance floor was just as fun as I remembered. We all had a great time partying like we still were in college.

I went to The Wild Onion for the first time last night with a few friends. We had a heard a lot about the place and decided to check it out. I liked the place as soon as I walked in! It was pretty classy but not so much that you would need to dress up to go there. It was a little hard to find a seat and nobody really directed us to a certain table or anything so we kind of felt like dorks circling the restaurant a few times. After we found a table we were greeted right away by a server and got our drinks pretty quickly. She did a good job checking on us and replenishing our drinks quickly. We all kind of thought the server was kind of snobby, but not the worst I've ever had! I really enjoyed the music that the DJ was playing. The food was amazing!! And the drinks were nice and cold. I thought the prices were reasonable as well. All and all a good experience and I would definitely go again and plan to soon! I would recommend The Wild Onion to anyone, check it out!!

Pros: Great food, cold drinks, nice atmosphere, great music!

Cons: Service was just so-so and we waited quite a while to get our food.

Here's why you go to the Wild Onion: To get a few drinks and make fun of the girls with muffin-tops and their overly hair gelled boyfriends. It sounds mean, I know, But it's fun.

I went to the Wild Onion for the first time this week. I enjoyed my experience. I had the walleye rueben. It was delicious. The waitress was friendly and attentive. The drinks were okay, but not terrible. Overall, it was a pleasant experience.

A friend and I stopped in for dinner while shopping on Grand. The food was fine, nothing too special. The most disturbing part of the experience was the waitstaff. Not only were they dressed entirely too revealing, but they came across actually trashy and rude. I don't feel like mini-skirts and tall black socks are appropriate and neither is wearing your hair down as a server or applying lipstick in the dining room mirrors. The worst part of the experience was when we frequented the establishment that Friday evening with friends of ours. Standing at the bar after ordering a drink I was litterly smacked by a cocktail waitress, very purposefully. This very rude, oh so much better than me server, actually shoved me out of her way. I would rather have her yell at me to move than physically move my body. When I said something to my group of friends, she got up in my face and confronted me. As a former server and cocktail server, I could never even imagine confronting a customer, let alone one minding her own business. She then proceeded to harrass me the entire night, making snood comment as she walked by our table. We also saw her demanding a tip from another customer, also speaking to him rudely. This waitress should not have a job. The service and treatment paired with the trashy atmosphere will keep me from ever even approaching the door again. Save yourself from the horrendous experience that is "the wild onion".

Pros: okay for bar food, we liked the lettuce wraps best

Cons: bad service

I never write reviews on sites like this, but I liked this place so much -- and no I don't have any financial or personal connection to it - that I decided to weigh in. All of these people complaining about the service and food here are clueless. It's a very classy place with great food; I bet a lot of these people complaining are obnoxious people or drunks who didn't get treated like royalty, and can't figure out why. Check out the Wild Onion. You won't be sorry.

Pros: just about everything

Cons: none

We were there in the middle of the day and ordered lunch. I think there was maybe only three other tables that had people at them. Service was terrible, not only did she get our food wrong, she was so slow.... so slow..... It took her a good 10 minutes to even ask us what we wanted to drink. She dropped them off and didn't come back for a long while. Never asked us how our food was. It was average if even that. Then to get the bill we had to send a flair up in the air to get her attention (okay not really but almost). We gave her a penny for our thoughts. (That napkin hopefully will give her some tips on better service).

i am glad after reading a few other reviews that i am not the only one who has had bad service at this establishment. i dont understand how they can go about thinking they can push their guests around and be so rude to them. i was yelled at by one waitress to "MOVE!!!" while standing at the bar. have you ever heard of "excuse me"? and i told her she didnt need to yell at me-i didnt know i was in her way. i informed her that i was also a waitress and i would never yell at any of my customers. she didnt look me in the eye, and she mumbled an apology. wow. apology not accepted. the second time was the bartender who yelled at my friend. my friend was going to leave a tip but i told him NOT to. you tip for good service.

I like this place-here's why. You can come to this trendy, stylish place on a Tuesday night and run into people you haven't seen in a long time. It's a place to see and be seen, especially on Tuesday nights when not a lot is going on in other places. I love their drinks, food and ambiance. It's trendy like Grand Avenue in fabulous St. Paul tends to be, and the menu is diversified. I would take friends there for a night out and impress them with it's look and feel. Great for large groups on a birthday or special occasiona when you want to dance the night away!!
Highly recommened!!

Very unique menu! Many items I have never seen at other restaurants, like the Wrigley Field Pastrami, the Steak Diane, and the Reddened Chicken. Also, be sure to try their mashed potatoes- They have a featured flavor each day, and are excellent!

Late night is great too! Many college kids- a great place to meet people and dance the night away!

I stopped by on a week day for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was really cool (I'll have to come back some evening) and the service was excellent. I tried the ceasar chicken sandwich and loved it. Even my glass of iced tea was above par.

Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. Ordered the quesadilla that was outstanding. My strawberry salad was great too. Our server was kind and prompt. However, the patrons were odd. There were two obviously over intoxicated guys at the bar that were being served. One almost stumbled into me. I would recommend coming here, but I would say only for lunch.
