Benihana is an amazing experience! My husband and I go for our birthdays and anniversary every year. We love the food they have to offer - there truly is something for everyone. It is very enjoyable to watch the chef make the food right in front of you. The shrimp sauce is out of this world!!! Best place in town.

A quick glance of the responses on here give you a good idea of what to expect. If all goes well, the food is good and I highly recommend you poor "the yummy sauce" on everything. If it doesn't go well, you can expect something like this: You will be told you will be seated in 15 minutes. You will be seated about an hour and 15 minutes later. You will be told that the "special" of the day is filet mignon, shrimp, and chicken. You will tell them you would like the "special". Little known to you, there happens to be the acual menu item called "the special" which contains lobster and steak. They will put lobster and steak on your plate. When you clarify with the cook that you ordered something differently than lobster and steak, he will call over the person who took your order. That person will argue that he never called the "special" he offered "the special" in spite of the fact that everyone else at the table heard him. When you state that regardless of the cause of the miscommunication (which was his!) you wanted something else and don't care for lobster, he will go ask the manager and come back and tell you that it cannot be changed. You will not eat the food. You will drop the argument as to not make a scene among strangers and post a review online as I have here. The food is good, but you will receive better service at Burger King. At least while you are there, you can "have it your way".

Pros: Yummy Sauce / Original Experience / You will be stuffed

Cons: Terrible Service / Unrealiable reservations and wait times

.

Overated and average. They couldn't wait to clean our table and get us out the door. They might want to check their competition to see how un-commercial others are.

Pros: Quickly seated

Cons: Felt we were rushed to finish our food so they could turn over the table

My husband and I live close to Benihana in Golden Valley and we dine there about once a month (in fact, we were there last night). I agree with a couple of the other comments about lackluster customer service, as they don't have the most accommodating staff. That said, I think people need to go here expecting to have all members of your party ready to be seated at the same time; it makes sense to me, if you show up with 5 people and are waiting on 1 more, don't expect the other couple at your table to sit there and wait for your 6th to show before they can order...welcome to communal eating, folks. Benihana is usually a hectic place, so I guess I understand why they are a little rough around the edges when it comes to seating people. My husband and I go as a twosome often and NEVER have a problem getting in, even when it's busy. We've also gone dozens times with large groups, which, on occasion, is a little more complicated. Overall, I've found that if you're extra nice to the staff and expect that things can move a little slow here, you won't get all bent out of shape. My opinion is that the food and the chefs are totally worth any drama you get from the hosts or servers. And here's a hint, act like you're interested in the show. Clap for them when they do a trick! Give them a little something to let them know you're engaged and they'll pay you back in spades. The food is consistently very good, and believe me when I say we've had just about everything on the menu. Here's another hint: be assertive with the chef. Let them know how you like your filet cooked or if you want extra shrimp sauce. They'll take care of you! Feel free to joke around with them and you'll have a lot more fun. My favorites include the fried rice, shrimp, scallops, filet, lobster, the onion/zucchini side dish, tuna steak, and of course, the SHRIMP SAUCE. My final hint: pour the shrimp sauce on your fried rice...you won't be sorry=)

Cons: May have to wait for a table, have to be patient with host staff

We were here in a group of 10 on a Monday night. First, we could not get reservations until 7 pm, so we thought they would be busy. There was hardly anyone there when we went in. Inspite of this we were not allowed to seat ourselves until the entire party arrived. Our drinks (specaility sake drinks) were extremely watery. The chef was indeed good but not spectacular. I have been to two other Hibachi style places in NY and the chef there was more creative than this one. Most importantly, the chef kept cooking items for people one by one, which is not how it was done in NY,as the chef made at least 4 -5 things at the same time. Due to this, some of us had to stare at the ones who were eating with an empty stomach. I had ordered seafood diablo (udon noodles - extremely tasty) and received my food when everyone else at the table had finished theirs, which meant, I had then to rush to finish off whatever I could and pack the rest as they were closing. The portions were small for the price charged.
Most importantly, the waitress gave us poor service. She had an irritated expression on her face and no smile. She only told one side of the table that ordering fried rice would be extra bucks, such that only 2 people heard. The rest of the table had no idea about this and she kept asking everyone at that side whether we wanted fried rice but never once said it would be extra money. I had asked that the seafood diablo be made without calamari and instead substitute shrimp. Instead of substituting, I got charged for extra shrimp, which was later adjusted with a very irritated demeanor by the server. However, I have to say that the manager came up to us after hearing all the problems that were occurring and offered us a coupon for 4 complimentary fried rice sides with our meal in the next one month, if we chose to go there again, which we certainly will not.

I am highly dissappointed in the service provided by the seating host. After initially being told that I would have to wait 30-45 minutes for my table, I waited for over 1 hour; and watched the host seat larger parties promptly. I asked the host twice on how much longer my wife and I would have to wait. On both occassions, I was told I will be the next party he would be calling for a table. When he kept seating bigger parties before us, my pregnant wife and I finally left the restaurant without eating there.

I am sharing my experience with you as I feel I would be doing a service to the local public. Benihana has definetly hired people who are in-competent and outright lie. They need to put up a banner in front of their restaurant stating that on Fridays they will not seat parties of less than four. It would definetly save a lot of frustration and time of couples who are out to enjoy a meal at their restaurant.

If I could, I would give them a 1/2 star rating. Too bad its not possible on this site.

Pros: Can't comment on the food, ambience, value, or sushi as we never got a chance to eat there

Cons: Terrible service. Seating host will lie to you about when a table will be ready.

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday - It was very fun and comical. If you're deciding whether Ichiban or Benihana's I'd go with Ichiban for more of a romantic scene and for upscale dining. But Benihana's is more for kids, the chef's like to make the show more comical. = ) I had the SUPERIOR dinner - it's VERY WORTH the $38.00 Boyfriend had LOBSTer, and they only served a little bit - minus the lobster tail $36. You're better off ordering a dish like filet mignon & lobster.

If you are going with a child, think twice. I thought It would be entertaining for my two year old. They do not count a highchair as a person, so instead of the normal packed table, it was VERY uncomfortable. I felt like I was practically sitting on the guys lap next to me. My friend was sitting in the isle and we were balancing dishes. When I asked to be seated at a table for 3 I was told NO. Why isn't a 2 year old considered a person? The highchair took up as much if not more room than a chair. Our bill was over $100 for the 3 of us. Not huge, but I have gotten MUCH MUCH better service paying $8 for a meal. This was $30 for just the meal and I was uncomfortable the entire time. Not to mention it felt like it was 100 degrees.

I want to warn everyone about the horrible, terrible service that we recently had at this restaurant. I have dined at other Beni's across the country and this was the worst. We waited almost 15 minutes from the time that we were seated at our grill, until we were even noticed by ANYONE on the wait staff. Then all they did was go get someone else who didnt want to wait on us. She was rude and made us feel like we were an inconvenience to her evening. We all ordered right away and it took about another 10-15 minutes to get our bar drinks. We asked for waters for the table as well, and those took about 30 minutes and three servers to finally get. When our chef arrived, things went from bad to worse. He was not engaging at all and had very little to add to our table. A display kitchen in any other restaurant offers just as much to watch. We ordered several different entrees; I ordered the filet mignon. I asked for it extra rare, and by the time that he remembered (we had to remind him) it was medium to medium well. There was no offer, and no server to ask for a second drink, mine was empty most of the dinner, as were most of my friend's. Dessert was a half hearted attempt to tell us not to order any. Not a single manager in site to complain to. And not a single "How was dinner this evening?" from any staff member. Just a simple, "Drive safe" from the host.

I can not believe that this sort of standard can tolerated in any restaurant. I hope, for the sake of the employees that they might have that are dedicated things get better, because we will NEVER go back for dinner there. There are too many other options in this city for Japanese to be throwing my money away on horrible cooking, worse service and completely apathetic management.

Pros: the bathroom was kinda clean.

Cons: Just about everything else.

We love this place. Even our four year old loves it! The food is so good here and the staff are very friendly. The show is usually pretty good too. The chefs levels are based on their hat color. I think red hats mean they are really good. But even the yellow hats (which migh be the lowest) were good too. The food is wonderful too. YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE SHRIMP SAUCE!!!! It's exclusive to the twin cities location and its fabulous!!! They have great steak and lobster tail too. They even have a kids menu but it atleast $10 for kids meals. Kinda pricey but they get enough food. Its too much food for any kid under four though. We used to order a side of rice and a side of shrimp instead of the kids meal but you could just share one entree too- unless your a really big eater. On your birthday they will sing to you and take a group picture for you and your friends, plus you get a little card with your name in Japanese and free ice cream (if it doesnt come with your meal). FYI: dont get the green tea ice cream unless you know you really like it. Its not that good- kind've bland. They have good sushi too, which you can order from the sushi bar or the regular dining section.Jut ask, becuase they usually don't offer. Also, be sure to make reservations for more than four people otherwise you'll be waiting for atleast 45 minutes to an hour. They are always busy and extremely popular, so keep that in mind. If dinner is too pricey go during lunch, its much cheaper- but you dont get quite as much food. It cost us a little under $100 for all three of us for dinner including tip. But I also got the lobster tail which is pricey, and we got a kids meal and drinks. So it doesnt have to be that much unless you splurge. We have been there several times and its always great!!!! Just go, you'll love it!

My daughter wanted to go to Benihana's to celebrate her 16th birthday and it was a very dismal and expensive experience! The waitress was a complete idiot, very dull and insulting. She went on in her opening greeting to not only discuss today's weather but then to blather on about the next days while we all stared vacantly at her wondering in vain if there was going to be any improvement in our experience. The chef came out and made several poor attempts at putting on a show while cooking and speaking to us in broken english...how do you want your "esteak"? ... we were wondering if we were going to get salsa with our "authentic" japanese dinner.
We secretly let the waitress know we wanted to surprise our daughter with singing and birthday desert..she came to the table and asked with her blah expression...what kind of ice cream do you want? No surprise..no celebration...UGH!!!! They served the desert and performed in a robotic monotone fashion a rendition of Happy Birthday in english and japanese...and then presented us with our $150 bill for food that was overcooked, tatsted mediocre and was boring. I don't recommend this experience to anyone!!!!!!!!!!

We went here with a group of 4 on a Thursday night. We had to wait an hour and a half for a table. If it wasn't for my friend really, really wanting to eat here, we would have left. The food was good, thank God we got one of the experienced chefs. The soup and salad are nothing to write home about - but I do love the ginger dressing they put on the salad. I ordered the Teriyaki steak and fried rice - the rice was a little bland and steak could have used more flavor, but it was tender and cooked right. The veggies were good, too, buty for the price I expect a little more - they seem to load you up with veggies and not enough meat. I would go back, but only after making reservations.

I went to Benihana for the first (and last) time on it's opening weekend in Maple Grove. I started the meal with a drink. After finding out the only non-sweet drink is some ginger cocktail, I was offered the next best thing, which had a ton of blue curacao in it. The drink was terrible. I turned to sake for the second drink. The menu is really basic, offering steak, shrimp, chicken, or lobster. While the food is prepared, we were served our soup and salad. The soup was broth with a few pieces of rehydrated onion, and the salad was iceburg lettuce with an awful attempt at a ginger vinaigrette. When the chef made our food, the shrimp appetizer was way overcooked (as paula deen would say - they tasted like little erasers). I ordered steak and shrimp for the main course - even though I ordered medium rare, the meat was well-done and again the shrimp were like erasers. There was no taste in any of the dishes.

I love the food at Benihana, thats the only reason why I've kept going back for years. However, the promptness and service needs work. I always make reservations here, each time I've visited w/my entire group present & on time, I still find myself having to wait 20+ minutes to be seated. Never once, had I complained about this matter to management. Anyone thats ever been here can clearly see they're EXTREMELY busy. It wasn't until I had my Birthday dinner 3 months ago which really got under my skin. My reservation was for 7pm, we were not seated until 8:45. We had asked the hostess several times how much longer we would be waiting & the response was 15... 20 minutes... when actually they knew it would be longer. if they had just apologized for the inconvenience & told us the truth that they overbooked the tables and that they weren't going to have another table open for 45 minutes to an hour, my group and I would have made other arrangements. Instead we took the hostess's word for it & waited the 15,20 minutes to hour and 45 minutes+ later until we're seated. Since then, I have not gone back. Its too complicating to get seated promptly. I don't understand the point in making a reservation when we still have to wait a ridiculous amount of time to be seated. I'm hoping that w/the Maple Grove location opening soon, the traffic will spread out evenly between the 2 locations so that when making reservations in the future, patrons will actually get seated promptly.

Pros: Food

Cons: Service, Seating

This was my first time to the restaurant here in Minnesota and I was really disappointed. I have eaten at other Benihana's and have had no problems. We arrived early because we were with a large group of family members (16) for an important birthday dinner. Like a normal big group everyone hadn't arrived at the same time so we started in the bar area with a cocktail and light conversation. We were approached within a couple minutes to follow a waiter and take our seats, we asked if they could wait five minutes for others to arrive and they became very angry and frustrated with us saying that they had to seat us right away all for different reasons that didn't make much sense. It was a late Monday evening and there weren't very many people there but they treated us as if there were a line out the door. We had two tables because of how large our group was and they sat us clear across the restuarant from each other even with a reservation for all guests. Once we were seated the chef was great, very nice and entertaining. The food was delicious but I still can't believe how rude they were about handling a big group. We almost left to go somewhere else but many of the guests were much older and it was just too much. If you have a big group don't walk through the door until your whole group arrives.

If it's your birthday don't let them sing happy birthday! !!!!

We have been to Benihana's many times. Twice they lost our reservation and we had to wait almost an hour to be seated (isn't that why you make reservations!). The atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired. Heard them in , feed them and get them out. We have always felt rushed. The service is average at best and the wait staff is rarely around if you need something. The place needs to be cleaned top to bottom. The bathrooms are awful! On a bright note, the food has always been good. We don't go back anymore, it's to hetic and I don't appreciate being rushed out.

This is the kind of place that people who have no appreciation for good food (the kind who think fish fries and Old Country Buffet are God's gift to midwesterners) swoon over. We arrived on time for our reservation on a Saturday night, but had to wait in the extremely cramped entry way about 45 minutes to be seated. The guy announcing the names for those waiting had a difficult time pronouncing the names of those waiting, so we had to go up to the hostess station each time to see if it was us he called. As we were waiting so long, I had time to check out the ambiance (or complete lack thereof.) I wish I hadn't looked up at the ceiling which was completely covered in cobwebs, or at the airvents which were were blanketed in thick dust, or at the carpeting and woodwork which were dirty and grimey. When we were finally seated, our chef gave a very generic, lackluster performance that was void of any flames on the grill because, we were told, it's too much of a liability. The food was of the same quality you'd get at Panda Express in the mall food court and the alcoholic drinks were ridiculously expensive, especially considering that they tasted like kids' juice drinks. I suggest spending your time and money at some place that treats you as an individual, cares about customer experience, and isn't a mass feeding operation.

I went to Benihana a couple of weeks ago with a friend of mine from out of town. We were seated within the 15-minute wait, our waitress came right away with drink orders and soup, and soon after the show began. Our chef was great to watch and, while difficult to understand at times, joked with us at the table. The food was fantastic and my friend, who had never been to a Japanese steakhouse before, was amazed. I hadn't been there in a few years, so I was pleased that the food was as good as I had remembered. Don't forget to get a lot of the sauce for the rice when your chef offers it. It is to die for.

Horrible experience for my B-day!!!
I made reservation almost a week prior and my group had to wait for 30 minutes before getting to a table (we came right on time). It was my B-day, we were not comped in any way, and no one even apologized. 3 other people were let to a table, even though their reservation was after ours because they "knew" one of the guys working there. Horrible!
Go to another place, don't waste your time or money, there's a really nice place in Eden Praire with better food, better service, and better prices...it cost us over $150 for 3 people.
I went to Minneapolis restarant (the top), next to the beer place on Hennepin. They made us wait for 15 minutes, but they were very apologetic and gave us free appetizer.

AVOID this place at all means! My friends and I went there on Friday night and in my entire life have never been treated with SUCH disrespect until I went there for dinner. First they messed up on our reservation, asked us to leave our table when we were seated becuase everyone in our party hadn't shown up yet, and RUDELY ask us to leave the table when people were still eating. Now what kind of customer service is that???!!!??? The people who works there can't even speak fluent English, so what makes you think we can understand a single word they said. Will never go back to this DUMP!!!

I grew up in the twin cities and before I moved I LOVED going to Benihana's, the town/state I live in now dose not have anything that comes close to this. the Shrimp is fantastic and the shrimp sauce is to die for!! (putting it on the rice is very good) with a group is great and even with as a couple is fun too (if you don't mind sharring your table with others) a little pricy but going at lunch time is much easier on the budget!

I was there the other week for the first time, and wow! I had no idea what to order so I went with the steak and shrimp and it was wonderful! The shrimp sauce is to die for, and the steak sauce is excellent too! Be sure to ask for extra fried rice, you only get a small portion! Our chef was the best one there, he was diceing and fliping so fast and although not very talkative(which was fine) used humor and did tricks especially for the kids at our table. Very friendly staff and were seated quickly(be sure to also make a reservation this place is very, very busy). The bartender is nice also drinks are very expensive!! Overall i would come to this place everyday, it is that GOOD!!!!

Eating at Benihana is a very unique experience - I highly recommend it. You're seated around a large table and the chef prepares your meal in the center while you watch. The meal preparation is great entertainment. Considering that you are getting a meal plus entertainment, the price isn't too bad.

Benihanas offers great food that is cooked right in front of you. It is both entertaining and delicious. The price is very reasonable for all the food you get and for the entertainment. Load up on the shrimp sauce!

The food and showmanship are excellent here.
The fried rice is and always has been the best part of the meal, especially with the shrimp sauce.

Awesome atmosphere! Group dining is such a fun change of pace. The food is incredible, super fresh and the show that the chef performs is second to none. This restaurant is also kid friendly. What a wonderful way to open the young'ns up to food other than hamburgers and fries. Speaking as someone who does not have kids, I think this is great. An overall cool experience!

I LOVE their food!!!!I wish there was one on the east side of town. The kids love to watch them cook, oh what the heck, so do the grownups. Try the combo, it has shrimp, chicken, and steak. I love the freshness and the orangish, pinky sauce is to die for. Love it, love it, love it.

I've had sushi all over the country and all over Japan, and this is the best sushi you can get in the twin cities. Anyone who knows what they are talking about knows this is good. The other restaurants might look good, but only if you don't know anything! The food looks great and tastes great I'd recommend it to anyone.

Fresh sushi, the right temperature, great service and an extensive menu. Every time I go to Benihana I end up striking up a conversation with one of the chefs. They are friendly and glad to answer all of my questions about the sushi creating process.

I have been to Benihana twice and recomend it! More than a good dinner - and that sauce is awesome! - Benihana delivers on experience! The waitresses were very diligent about refills and kept the table cleared (there's not a lot of room with that big grill mid-table). This is a really fun place to bring friends from out of town. Everyone I know who has been there loved it. Definatly make reservations!!

Normally I would not put down straigt tens; but this place has been by far the best Sushi place I have eaten at in the Twin Cities. The Sushi here is on par with Seattle for freshness and taste. The presentation of the sushi was excellent.

What a show, an outstanding display of culinary excellence in a fun atmosphere. This is definelty a place to get a group of people to go together and just have a good time. I don't think it's for couple's looking for a romantic night out but other wise I highly recommend it. You won't go hungry that's for sure. The price isn't too bad given how much you get for your money. The only complaint I have is that you do feel a little rushed but other than that nothing but good times were had by my party.

This place was in the midst of a renovation project, so it's sure to be nicer, now. They still produced an interesting cooking show and good food at reasonable prices even during their construction phase. Good for a group. Good people watching.

This place used to be fantastic as the Samurai, it's been terrible ever since. The service is rude, sloppy and very slow. The food is ok, not as good as it used to be though. We decided to try it again after giving up on it shorty after they were bought out but nothing has changed.

We ate there for my sisters after wedding party (reception was next night) with kids and sdults ranging from age 2 to 86 and it was great for everyone. Even the 2 year old was entertained with the chef. It was my first time there and I will definitely go back. A little spendy but for everything you get; meal, appetizer and dessert it is worth it!!!!!!!!!
